True Voice – Mohd Rafi

The following article was brought to my notice when Sharad posted it on MAS. The article has been trimmed down a bit keeping afloat Rafi details. However, anyone interested can go visit the source at http://tfmpage.com/forum/4980.6302.04.57.19.html

I am Swaminatha Iyer and I am 78 years old. I hail from Tiruchi and I am a part of music associations in Tiruchi, M’as as well as in West Bengal and Maharashtra.

I think it is wrong to condemn music or artists on either side of Vindhyas. Our Indian music is one of the few which has not been cleaned off by the western music though there has always been a influence. It speaks a lot of the richness of our music. Sometime back director of MTV had said that MTV westernized the music wherever it went but in India , MTV had to be Indianized for it to be accepted. A lot of this credit goes to the Indian film music.

I have been fortunate to have close personal association with Rafi, Sirkali, TMS, Dr. BMK, Kishore, SPB & KJY, PS, Mannadey and the one and only Lata Mangeshkar.

Comparisons are bound to come, but almost every artist or I have met considers Lata to be beyond comparison. Her talents are beyond anyone’s reach. Even Sirkazi used to talk of her singing like a die-hard fan as do countless others.

Now coming to the Rafi-SPB discussion. It might be difficult to convince an South Indian to believe Rafi is the better and at the same time Rafi crowd will never believe any other male singer comes anywhere nearer. There is one more mobile crowd, which is well conversant with Hindi and some south Indian language. Majority of them tilt to either Rafi or Kishore.

During one of my stays in M’as I had stayed with SPB. While talking of true voices he said, I don’t feel like half a singer when listening to Rafi. True voice is not a tech term but many in circle use it. Perfect example would be lata, but to understand consider our own PS who within her range is superb. People who do not have such true voices can never do justice to original. They generally underplay many parts of the song or fake it with bass/superficial singing. True voices make people like Sirkazi, Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, Lata… Inimitable. However since Sirkazi and Nusrat did not have the filmy voices their “real” following is limited to their local arena.

In addition to the true voice if the singer has a very good voice then in “most” cases he/she can better songs of others. It is this combination which makes Rafi stand out among the other male singers. There are many here who seem to have mistaken notions on a good bass and also on high pitch.

Bryan Adams does not require a monster bass in “Summer of 69” to sound real manly. It is the punch which gives that feel and that is decided only by the comfort level in most ranges (that is by what your throat can support). This you CAN never disguise with bass. Since people have talked about lack of manly voice viz. a viz. Rafi it was necessary to bring this point out. I have had the fortune of listening to most singers in studio and some times without a mike, practicing with MD’s.When Lata or Rafi do, the level is so high that people hesitate to even hum. It felt silly to sing in their presence (and it feels silly when someone says his voice isn’t manly).

In RD’s tribute when SPB sang “Aaja Aaja mein hoon” or “Chaand mera dil” it sounded only sweet and lacked punch if you compare with Rafi’s original.

Yesu once told me God has been partial to Rafi. He said “god gift term anavasyamaa romba common aa ippo use aardu”.. but idu Rafi kee thaan 100% porundu”. This person could sing “as intricately as a lady without sounding thin”, “cover any mood”, “versatility odey perfect example Rafi”. Yesu said most important is the comfort level over ranges which makes you feel God has been partial to Rafi. (But Of course in Rafi’s early career (1950’s) the voice was relatively feeble).

To people exposed to Rafi’s talent, these or any amount of praise can only seem less. I just wish he was alive and you people could get a live chance to hear him. Probably you can get hold of the DD album for the Geet Gaata Chal series where the first four episodes were dedicated to Rafi. Rafi is on camera singing “O Duniya Ke Rakwaaley” and many other songs. If you see and hear the last part you will realize why SPB said “impossible”. I think particularly those people who have talked about scales w.r.t Rafi should see this album. Its a known fact in industry that Rafi ruled high pitch and there is no male singer better in switching notes so easily. There are artists who can go beyond but then they sound strained or they don’t have pleasant voices when they venture into those territories.

Many singers of today are his compulsive followers. But they end up inheriting only part of his quality. Md. Aziz ended up with a sad voice. Mahendra Kapoor with a thick nasal voice. Anwar with a nasal voice. Sonu Nigam with a feminine voice. Rafi neither had a soft voice nor a heavy (bass) voice he had a good voice. Importantly did not strain at high notes, and voice if at all only became better at higher notes. If you see him singing it will remind you of Janaki. However diff the song is or the note is he will be smiling and singing. It is unthinkable that he cannot sing something.

There seems to be lot of talk about “Shankara Bharanamo” song. SPB has sung many a great numbers and things being said about this song in this forum are rather amusing, particularly b’cos 3 out of 4 people who can be called as singers will be able sing it and at least one out of 10 will sing it with the same effect. There are lot of other songs of SPB where this great singer has played with songs in total control. You will find most south Indian singers who have had a good exposure say that it is beneficial to learn Hindustani as it gives better breath control and improves expression.

Rafi was not only able to glide over a song, the important thing was that he could express each word/sound when singing. It is one thing to hold your breath, start and reach a crescendo (high note), as like in “Shankara”, “Anbey (Yennai kaan villaye)” it is different ballgame if you have to do it from low notes or suddenly switch notes. With practice the former can be done, latter requires a special gift. Rafi had a natural ability to do the latter. In “Tum joh mil gaye ho” there is such a transition in the “karwaan mil gaya” part. I have never seen anyone do justice to most of his songs in my life time. In “parda hai parda” quawaali the similar part is “kar doon to, Akbar mera naam”. In fact most of his songs will have these specialty as it was his natural ability to sing freely in a wide range at the same time giving that extra expression.

Whereas SPB takes us to heavens with “Idu oru pon maali”,”Ilaya nila” “bisiladarenu”(kannada), when he sings Rafi’s song it lacks the punch or expression, though it has the bass. But at least most agree that SPB does some justice to original, whereas most others murder the original.

One trivial point I would like to add is that singing in Hindi is harder. There are more “JHA”,”CHA”,”HA”,”THA”, “KHA”,”JA”,”FA”. These take away the breath faster. The more expressive you are the more air you are using up. Just singing from Nabhi will not help, your throat also needs to do a lot, for singing in Hindi, Bengali etc. SPB makes you fall in love with his south Indian songs but same cannot be said about his Hindi songs. If you just glide through words having these sounds, you will never be expressive. Doing this as well as reaching high notes is not easy. Rafi had this gift and that’s why it is difficult to imagine anyone else in his shoes. Song “Chalkaaye jaam” has so much expression that it is unthinkable how anyone can sing it. When Rafi switches to a high note with “Mitwaa” in the song “Chaahunga mein tughey” you cannot replicate it with bass. Most others will sound as if they are shouting in such cases. That man’s throat had the ability to freely sing at such levels.

Versatility is not just the ability to sing in various styles, more important is how good you are singing in those styles. You have lot of Ghazal singers today but when Rafi sings a Ghazal you will sit up and take notice. You don’t have to be part of the Ghazal listeners crowd. This is one important aspect. Whatever style you sing you should be able to pull the common man to listen and not just a particular crowd. Pick “parda hai parda” or any qawalli and it will stand tall among other qawalli’s.

Variety is amazing :

songs of Guru Dutt’s Khagaz key phool or songs like abhi naa jao chod key, Aaja teri yaad aayi, Aaj kal mein dhal gaya, Aaj kal terey merey pyaar, Aasmaan sey aaya farishta, Dil ney pyaar kiya hai, Deewana mujh saa nahi, Din dhal jaaye, Duniya paagal hai, Jaane walon jara, Dil joh na kaha saka, Dil key jharokon mein, Dil kaa bhavar, Chalkey teri aakkhon sey, Kar chaley hum fida, khilona jaan kar tum, Woh jab yaad aay, Woh hain jara khafa, Vaadian mera daaman, Pathar key sanam, Chaand mera dil, Main zindagi kaa saath, Mainey poocha chaand sey, sun sun jaalima, Koi jab raah na paay, hum to chaley pardes, badan pey sitaarey, laal chadi maidaan, Tum jo mil gaye, O meri shaahey, Sau baar janam lengey, Tum mujhey yoon bhula, Tumney mujhey dekha, Terey merey sapney, Tumny pukaara hum chaley aay

Name a situation/mood and Rafi’s song will be there on the top.

    Friends,

There have been questions raised on Rafi’s voice quality in the other forum. I’ve provided links for three songs, all from the mid 60s. In the first song from Dosti, Rafi uses his “true” voice because it was for an unknown actor. Rafi sang five songs in Dosti, each one in a league of its own. Dosti launched LP to the big league. Incidentally, RD played the mouth organ in the songs. The second song is from Jab Jab phool khile and here Rafi tailors his voice for Shashi Kapoor; another instance where the Rafi version was better and more popular than the Lata version. All the songs became major hits and Shashi got established as a popular hero. The third is from Teesri Manzil where Rafi pours his soul into the song and modulates his voice for Shammi Kapoor. All the songs from the film are major hits and Lord pancham joins the big league. Three songs, all by Rafi, for three different md’s, all aspiring to be the next sj. The first sung in Rafi’s voice, the second in Shashi’s voice and the third in Shammi’s voice. My personal favourite is the first one. The best voice, the best playback, the best singer!

legends bloody – then u will get it back too…
u are showing ur culture and smearing the name of Kishore Kumar
of khandwa .. .. poor soul that he has such illiterates as his fans….
i pity these jaundiced minds and ears who are only trouble makers
of our society….. truly u need a ravan in the society as said by

    My dear friend,

Somebody asked for Rafi n Kishoreduets. here is list of few songs where Kishore sang far better than Rafi

    1. Tere jaisa bhai sabko mile
    2. sa re ga ma pa ga re
    3. bane chahe dushman
    4. Jannu meri jaan (Rafi is like…sher ke samne chuha)
    5. Na jaane kaise hai, pal me badal jaate hai
    6. Ek mahal ma chhamchham karti rahi dui shahzadi (Again, rafi is no where in this song)

Boss u people only(even nobody knows) said Rafi sang 30K songs, and i personally believe 60s era was great time for music world. I give credit to all MDs who created such a great melodies. Boss, if any other singer had sung Rafi’s songs, it would have been hit or popular (May be not as musch as after rafi sang)..but Kishore ki to baat hi kuchh aur hai.

Aaj Kal Tamilian rat lagaye hue hai ki Rajnikant is better than Amitabh because movie is running housefully, Is it so? This site belongs to Rafi and 99% are rafians, it doesn’t mean he is the only great.

dear ganesg, Hussein, binu, prakash etc. etc…..
i always watch you people fighting with kk fans.
this is wrong according to our custom. please
    study “ramayan” and “Mahabharat”
Lord Ram is the hero in “Ramayan” and Lord
Krisnha is the hero in “Mahabharat”
there is no charm in “Ramayan” without “ravan”
and no charm in “Mahabharat” without “duryodhan”
In the same way rafi saab’s story is incomplete
without a “ravan” and you can guess well who is
the “ravan” in the whole episod.
so please don;t try to drive away this army of
    lanka…keep the fight on !!!
one day “RAM” will surely kill this “RAVAN” and
    his army…….

so let the war be continue……

    Rafi-ians dear:

did u know that in 1980 on May 28th rafi saab was dominating and
leading the charts by 62.5% over any singer in the country in the
popular weekly Binaca geet mala charts – the sure indication of
    popularity of a singer.
On may 28th , the year rafi saab died, out of a total of 16 toppers,
mohd rafi had 10 hits in them and Kishore kumar – just 2 songs…
Yet, these baccha fans will come and tell you that Kishore was on top.
friends, he may surely be on top but surely not on the music charts,
then in 1980.. He had already lost ground to rafi saab.

And look what Lata Mangeshkar said when the thespian passed away:
rafi saab filled the void left by K.L. Saighal, I sang with him for 33 years
and rafi saab was an exceptional singer by any standards…
Music lovers will never forget rafi saab…..this vishwa ka ratan..

Ref.to post 387:At last you mentioned rafiji,as per your last sentence shows that if you get chance to hear his old songs than you your self can be able to judge.
For me kishore kumar is also 2nd choice as he sang many songs for almost allthe stars from mithun to amitabh(between 1969 to 80) but i consider Mere jivan saathi, amar prem, zehrila insaan(o hansani),ckng,jd,zkdh, parichay, and kinara as his best and evergreen songs.
    excuseme !
where as Rafiji sang for many stars and non star and the list of his ever green songs in different mood is very big.
My sincere advice to you is that dont aries any story in favour of your liking to hurt any one instead give some good experiance you experianced after hearing your 2nd choice.

    dear ashu
    ok.i hope so about rushdi.
secondly, how many duets they sung togather?in some duets if kishore is dominating then can we say that he is much better singer than rafi?
i have no chance to listen their duets.can u send me?
rafi had excelled lata, asha, mannaday etc etc in duets are they all less singers than kishore? kishore has very nice full voice but he was very straigt singer. he cannot take murkis if u know music. secondly, can u borrow some people for kk and to support yourself?
just count articles on both sites and count comments ,who will win?
    check humaraforums and count entries?
or check sale value in music shops?
in paksitan, rafi is best seller among lata and mukesh along noor jehan.
    am i true dear?
    send me some duets.

    Ganesh,

Yaar tu to kisi kaam ka nahi hai. Since my 2 bolgs were blocked by admin so i wrote don’t block mu blog. I never said don’t publish mu blog.

    Binu Uncle,
I have clearly wrote abt my identity and if you have still problem then its ur problem, not mine.

Let’s talk abt music. Somebody wants my emailid for sending Kishore & Rafi duets. I have all duets of Rafi n Kishore since film “WAARIS” released till their last song. If you have some more, u can send it to me. It would be appreciated.

Ganesh, abhi bhi..If u see Kishore ka interview, u can still see K L Saigal ka portrait which is still there. Tum rafians ka logic kitni tuchh hai.
I am surprise. One thing u people should remember.
Singers are alive because of Music Director.
There are few parameters which MD thinks before they call singers
    – Personal Choice
    – Best suit as per situation (Capability, Improvisation etc.)
For e.g. Udit had fought with Anu Malik. Though he is a good singer, hardly he is singing hindi songs. Is he started singing “Besura”. Nahi Dost..

If Haathi Mere Saathi is creatia for best singer then i will ask one question.
Why Manna Dey sang for Shammi Kapoor in “PAGLA KAHIN KA”. It is not because Manna could sung better than Rafi, but it is becuase it suits Manna. Aur ha Shankar-Jaikishhan me Shakar ka first choice Manna dey tha.
He always prefer Manna over rafi and Jaikishan prefer rafi.

    Mr. Akela,
    I am sorry if i hurt u.

Here is my reply for Dilip-Raj-Dev.
Guys, u people alwyas come with some nonsens things. I hope u guys have seen Rafi’s when his career was on TOP and when he was down (1969 – till he alive) . Talat was the first choice for Dilip, then Mukesh and after that Rafi come. Raj Kapoor was the only hero but always gone with Mukesh.

Mr Shah, For u Rafi is 24 carat and for me Kishore is 24 carat. I don’t debate that.

    Mr. Akmal,
I ask all rafians to pls. listen Rushdi and send ur comments on his voice resemblence. He is lower version of rafi. Anwar and Shabbir Kumar are 100 times better than him.

    Dear Mummun,
Like and dislike never depend on caste and religion. I am neither Muslim nor Bengali bur still i like Kishore and Rafi.

KK fans are having blind faith on KK. No one can be compared to Rafi Saheb.

  17. prakash shah says:

Dear kk fans,(i only inspired to write this after reading few baqwaas comment on rafiji)
TRUTH,SUN,and MOON can never be hide by any clouds for ever.
The same way the naked truth is that Naa Koi hoo hey na koi hoenga Rafiji jaisa OK!
And if you want to compare rafiji with any other singer,it is impossible,as he is unparerral.
And if your culture permitt you to make unnecessary writing abt.him which hurts real rafian than do it ,if you get joy out of it to do so then do it till your next coming generation it makes no difference to our Rafiji and to us b’coz you made us little hard skin follower till now..As a singer rafiji is our idol and we are surrender to his songas and his great versatility and his non-arrogance persnality and above all great human being like saint.I know that your logic is that to hammer 100 times on untruth to make it truth, but dont forget that we are your …..
Rafiji is like 24 carat for us.OK !!

I just found the link to an article that was published in the Telegraph after Rafi saab passed away. People on the other forum keep talking about Binaca Geet Mala hits; ask them to check the facts. The 80s would have belonged to him, but… Can we have the administrator post this as a regular article?

  24. P. Haldar says:

    Ref post 366:

I wish I had the Filmfare copy but I don’t. If anyone has contacts at Times of India, we might be able to obtain the article. It’s a collector’s delight. By the way, if you meet Usha Timothy, see if you can get leads to the following musicians who used to always travel with Rafi saab on world tours (I’m not sure if they are still alive):

Leslie Godinho, the famous drummer in SJ’s orchestra
Narinder Kaka, the famous sax and clarinet player
    Anabel Castro, the well-known guitarist

They might be able to give you some unique perspectives on Rafi saab. In addition to Usha Timothy, Krishna Mukherjee, Sushmita Basu, Hemlata, and Usha Khanna also used to travel with him. In the early sixties, guess who travelled with Rafi saab to England? Geeta Dutt. Rafi saab used to get invites from every country where there was an Indian presence. I just don’t understand how people can say other singers are more popular. Rafi mania started spreading to foreign shores almost 50 years ago, and there hasn’t been a lull since the storm first began.

    Dear Mr. ashu !
i do not mind your words as you do not know what
    i have achieved in life.
yes, i have not played with rafi saab or lataji or ashaji
or mannade saab…not only me in our country but thousands
and thousands musicians are there who never tried to go to
mumbai film industry…as because bollywood music is not
    the “end” music.
in our world we say ‘try to be a good human being and then
try to be a good musician’. very true.
perhaps you will be surprised to know that evergreen Dev
anand is my all time favourite. I have met. have photographs
    with him.
Dev saab only introduced kishor in his film “Ziddi”.
There was a time when there was a cold but healthy war among
    Dev-dilip-raj.
Dilip selected rafi saab…rajkapoor selected mukesh …and dev
    selected kishor kumar.
dilip saab borrowed rafi saab’s golden voice till rafi saab’s demise.
same did raaj saab till his demise….but soon my favourite dev
saab realised that he can not go very far with only kishor kumar’s
    voice.
he was compelled to borrow rafi saab’s golden voice leaving his
    own ‘introduced’ kishor.

    abhi na jao chhodke…
    mai zindadi ka saath…
    hum bekhudi me…
    achha ji mai hari…
    tasweer teri dilme…
    kya se kya ho gaya…
and a lot lot more hit songs that kishor would have never been able to
give his (filmy) godfather dev saab.
i am sorry to say that this was my favourite dev saab’s defeat.
only kishor was not sufficient to make him hit !
bravo legendary dilip and raaj who never looked at kishor !
bravo naushad saab, op nayyar, khayyam, roshan, madan mohan
who never depended on kishor…but always waited for rafi saab’s
    busy recording dates !
what i mean to say is an artist can ignore kishor’s voice throughout his
career, but can not ignore rafi saab’s voice. for example…dilip saab,
shammi kapoor, rajendra kumar, rajkumar and even raajkapoor.
Is this enough to open your closed eyes or you are pretending of being
    slept !

  26. Monty says:

Rubbish ashu, you say you are abig fan of Rafiji, and at the same time you critisize the legend, how come?

he was not rafi version.rafi version w as masood rana.rushdi was very similar to kishore.i can that u have not no sense of music.
i will be happy if u can compare kishore and rushdi.
rafi is much bigger than kishore due to his range ,expressions, and verstialty.u cannot ignore these facts.
    come on for rusdi kishore.

There used to be a portrait of Rafi Saheb in KKs bungalow ‘gauri kunj’, when KK was alive and this is a 100% fact, may be ashu won’t believe as he is after blind faith. I too love KKs some songs, but when it comes to favourite, it’s only one and one Rafi Saheb.

Boss, U forced me to write all these line. abhi tak to main sirf aur sirf Rafi aur kishore ke barey me baat kar raha tha. Par lagta hai tum logon ko kutte billi se jyada pyar hai.
    Aata me tumchi waat lawato.

    Mr. Akela,
Now i know what kind of human beong u r. U can’t judge people on his no. of marriages. Agar aisa hai to Nelson Mandela sabse bekar hota. Aur FYI we are talking abt kishore as a singer. If you have some free time then go to youtube and search for “KISHORE KUMAR Interview”. Usme aapko sab kuchh mil jaayega. Ek normal musician se Satyajit Ray tak ka interview.

    Dear Akmal,
Read my last few blog, i hav ementioned abt Rushdi. I am repeating myself for you “Rushdi is lower version of Rafi”. Singer Anwar is 100 times better than him. I wrote this line after hearing Rushdi in film name “SUHAAG” in Youtube.

    Dear Narayan sir,
I would like to correct you. I visited kishore kumar at his bungalow in 90 and i could only see K L Saigal portrait not Rafi and let me remind you one more thing, once Lata interviewed Kishore and ask her abt his favorite, he promptly replied K L Saigal then she asked who is next and he replied “AAMI”.
And one more thind, I know both legend respect each other very much which could be hardly seen nowadays. I respect both so i don’t have any problem. I have problem only when you guys start degrading kishore in favor of Rafi which is not at all correct.

  37. ashu says:

    Mr Rajkumar Akela,

I know now what kind of human being u r. People like u who never achieved anything in their life so they jealous others(Kishore) and like similar person (Rafi). But i must say “Rafi is equally famous”

Note: Sorry Akela, if i hurt u.

How u can judge people on his marriage? Please read his history and then talk.
There are lot of rumours abt him abt his behaviour, if u have time pls. go through KISHORE KUMAR Interview in YOUTUBE. You will face the truth.

Video contains interview with musician and they said how KK helped them.
Once in SA RE GA MA, one guitar payer came (I forgot his name) as judge. When he heard one contestant singing “MERE SONI MERI TAMMNA..JHOOT NAHI MERA PYAR”. DO you want he said, “KISHORE is matchless”. usne aur bhi kafi acchi battein kahi thi.

  38. ashu says:

    Mr. Akmal,

I know finally u people come to ur own taste. He is one of my fav., but i like KISHORE. I never thought abt hindu, muslim. Gulam ali is my another fav., i like him better than Jagjeet singh, what does it mean?

Akmal, don’t write nonsense. Rafi was Indian first and then Muslim.

  39. ashu says:

    Mr Narayan,

I don’t have any problem at all. I know Kishore and Rafi both were on good term, and it is very rare to see nowadays.

I have only problem when you guys start degrading kishore in favor of Rafi. And narayan sir, i must tell you one thing, i visited his house at Kishore Kumar Ganguly Marg (i m from Mumbai) and there was no Rafi’s portrait. But he had great respect for rafi, Lata and Asha.
Once Lata interviewed Kishore (few clips not all uploaded in YouTube) and asked her whom he like most, he promptly replied K L Saigal and then she asked whom next and again he repied promptly “AAMI”

Many time i said Rafi was Legend and his voice will be alive forever like KISHORE, MUKESH, LATA and ASHA. I don’t have any doubt.

  40. akmal jangvi says:

    ashu
can u give me u email adress?
one thing is clear that u have good stamena.
i think u are just extremist person.
i think u hate rafi because he was muslim.
listen to rushdi and then tell me.

  41. Raajkumar Akela says:

I am an old musician and still active in music field.
    I have played with a lot of Rafi-singers, Kishor-singers,
mukesh singers and a lot of more.
I very humbly welcome these anti-rafi people in my
e-mail id to confront me, but nobody is facing me.
I want to show them the ‘mirror’. a mirror never lies.
I want to explain them the difference between Md. Rafi
    and kishor kumar.
We musicians whenever talk about music and remember
Mohd rafi…automatically “rafi saab” words come out of
our mouth. Automatically “lataji” word comes out of our
mouth..may be this is because of a musician’s eternal
respect to these two great singers.
but when it is about kishor kumar, we simply say “kishor
kumar” and talk about him. saying truly an automatic
respect does not come out for kishor kumar.
If kishor kumar fans do not mind…i would like to say
that I can not respect an artist who changes wives like
    clothes.
Even if it is your own father who changes wife frequently
apart your mother…you will never respect him from your
    heart.
an artist should be an example of simplicity and great
    moral values…..
how can i respect a “play-boy” from my deep heart ?

  42. P. Haldar says:

Dear myk, thanks for your compliments. I’ve been following film music since I was a kid and, as a music lover, I’ve developed insights that I am happy to share with everyone. Not that my analyses are always correct, but I try to base them on as many facts as possible.

The Raju Bharatan article that you mention was actually a cover story in Filmfare. You mentioned 1975, but I thought it was 1974. Anyway, on the cover was Rafi’s face surrounded by all the stars he has sung for. The title of the article was “The Voice of Stars”. This article is a must-read for all Rafians. I found only one line in the piece a little jarring. He asks: Is there anything that could be better than a Lata solo? And then he answers the question himself: it’s a Rafi-Lata duet. The duet that he specifically mentioned was “Sun mere sajna” composed by Husanlal Bhagatram. I wish I had kept the Filmfare copy with me. If you have access to the article, please try to post it on this site. I haven’t been able to find that article in electronic format.

There’s another very good Filmfare issue that all Rafians would be interested in. It came out a week after Rafi passed away. The cover was split into two: the left with Uttam Kumar’s picture (captioned “The man with the golden smile”) and the right with Rafi’s picture (captioned “the man with the golden voice”). The article on Rafi is a must-read. If I remember correctly, the article mentioned that Basu-Manohari were at rafi villa in the morning rehearsing rafi for Bangla puja songs. In addition, begum rafi had also mentioned in an interview that rafi saab was not feeling well that day but he said he didn’t want to cancel the appointment with someone who was coming all the way from calcutta to record puja songs. That person couldn’t have been Basu or Manohari because both were bombay-based. Based on an interview that Shyamal Mitra (md for amanush and anand ashram) gave on calcutta tv, I think it was him. Shyamal had mentioned that he rehearsed Rafi for the songs, and later sang the songs himself because Rafi was no more. So my guess is that Rafi was doing two EP records, which meant eight Bangla songs. Basu-Manohari had recorded four bangla songs with Rafi in 1978. If any of you have contacts with Basu-da or Manohari-da, you can check the facts. I know that some of the rd fans have contact with Manohari-da; see if you can collect some information on what happened during that fateful morning.

I’ll send my contact info to Mr. Binu Nair soon and will ask him to share it with you and a couple of other people.

    Dear Rafians,
I liked the analysis by Haldar,Binu,MYK,Huseinbhai,Ganesh,Akmalbhai,Rajkumar sir and all devoted Music lovers n fans.
As for Ashu urf Ashwini urf debojit urf kkclan,
My suggestion mere bhai that if u can give ur address I shall send cd of non-filmi songs rendered by the only one and only Rafi sahab and u will enjoy the melody, sweetness to make u calm, composed and heavenly.
Are u aware that along with Saigal sab’s potrait Rafi sab’s potrait is adorned in Kishore da’s house in Juhu.
Do u know that Kishore da spent 4 hours in Rafi sahab’s house when the legend passed away and he was seen crying near the noble feet of Rafi sab.
Do u know that in Kolhapur when a fan carrying a transistor playing Rafi sabs song suddenly switched off while meeting Kishore da. Do u know what ur guru told ” Are bhai kyon transistor bandh kiya on karo aur Rafi sab ke madhur awaz ka lupth uthaynege”.
The song played was Sj’ s ” main kahin kavi na ban javun”.
When kishore da had the best relations with Rafi sab then what is ur problem Ashu…

    Hi P. Haldar,

Just managed to read your post right now or else I would have missed it. Very interesting views on SDB and what he would have done had he lived in Rafi’s comeback phase. They could have certainly made up for the few songs they had in the early seventies. Its alright though because the SD-Rafi combo is Golden, I believe his best male songs were with Rafi, even with a good number of songs to Kishore too.

I fully agree with your views about SD dumping singers and going with the trend. That ‘click’ phrase you used was indeed SD’s line, also present in the RB article I had quoted on the Kishore site.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful to people on the Kishore site, but the majority over there are virtually clueless about music and distort the facts in a big way. Over here, the posters are much more knowledgeable. Ofcourse there are some here who also distort facts too but I guess you will find that everywhere.

I would love to get in touch with you personally.

  49. ashu says:

    Dear Akmal,

I haven’t heard abt Rushdi before, but u prompted me to listen him. Just now i went to YouTube n heard his songs from “SUHAAG”.
Boss, He is another lower version of Rafi like ANWAR, SHABBIR, MUNNA AZIZ, Vipin and now SONU. If u ask me, i must say singer ANWAR is 100 times better than him.

  50. ashu says:

    Binu Uncle,

Khandwa koi gajar bheli thodi hai na, jo aise hi kharab ho jaayegi.
ANd Boss Ganesh, Who said filmfare is criteria for Best Singer. If i go with ur line then still Kishore is greatest as he won more awards than Rafi. Now u people will say there were no award during 60’s. I must tell u if there had been award then it would have been gone to MUKESH and TALAT.

So guys, agar aisa to waisa hota aur agar waisa hota to aisa hota..bolna bhool kar sachhai me jeeo.

Mr. Binu Uncle, Still i m saying i am bigger Rafi fan. I wish u could have seen me and my collections.

Mr Ganesh, Before writing nonsense, u should think twice. Listen “salaam kijiye” n “Ram kare allah kare” songs from Aandhi n Aapke deewane. Amit kumar sang this with Rafi.
Pls. listen this songs with all ur sur experience, enjoy ana dif u have guts then judge 🙂
