True Voice – Mohd Rafi

The following article was brought to my notice when Sharad posted it on MAS. The article has been trimmed down a bit keeping afloat Rafi details. However, anyone interested can go visit the source at http://tfmpage.com/forum/4980.6302.04.57.19.html

I am Swaminatha Iyer and I am 78 years old. I hail from Tiruchi and I am a part of music associations in Tiruchi, M’as as well as in West Bengal and Maharashtra.

I think it is wrong to condemn music or artists on either side of Vindhyas. Our Indian music is one of the few which has not been cleaned off by the western music though there has always been a influence. It speaks a lot of the richness of our music. Sometime back director of MTV had said that MTV westernized the music wherever it went but in India , MTV had to be Indianized for it to be accepted. A lot of this credit goes to the Indian film music.

I have been fortunate to have close personal association with Rafi, Sirkali, TMS, Dr. BMK, Kishore, SPB & KJY, PS, Mannadey and the one and only Lata Mangeshkar.

Comparisons are bound to come, but almost every artist or I have met considers Lata to be beyond comparison. Her talents are beyond anyone’s reach. Even Sirkazi used to talk of her singing like a die-hard fan as do countless others.

Now coming to the Rafi-SPB discussion. It might be difficult to convince an South Indian to believe Rafi is the better and at the same time Rafi crowd will never believe any other male singer comes anywhere nearer. There is one more mobile crowd, which is well conversant with Hindi and some south Indian language. Majority of them tilt to either Rafi or Kishore.

During one of my stays in M’as I had stayed with SPB. While talking of true voices he said, I don’t feel like half a singer when listening to Rafi. True voice is not a tech term but many in circle use it. Perfect example would be lata, but to understand consider our own PS who within her range is superb. People who do not have such true voices can never do justice to original. They generally underplay many parts of the song or fake it with bass/superficial singing. True voices make people like Sirkazi, Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, Lata… Inimitable. However since Sirkazi and Nusrat did not have the filmy voices their “real” following is limited to their local arena.

In addition to the true voice if the singer has a very good voice then in “most” cases he/she can better songs of others. It is this combination which makes Rafi stand out among the other male singers. There are many here who seem to have mistaken notions on a good bass and also on high pitch.

Bryan Adams does not require a monster bass in “Summer of 69” to sound real manly. It is the punch which gives that feel and that is decided only by the comfort level in most ranges (that is by what your throat can support). This you CAN never disguise with bass. Since people have talked about lack of manly voice viz. a viz. Rafi it was necessary to bring this point out. I have had the fortune of listening to most singers in studio and some times without a mike, practicing with MD’s.When Lata or Rafi do, the level is so high that people hesitate to even hum. It felt silly to sing in their presence (and it feels silly when someone says his voice isn’t manly).

In RD’s tribute when SPB sang “Aaja Aaja mein hoon” or “Chaand mera dil” it sounded only sweet and lacked punch if you compare with Rafi’s original.

Yesu once told me God has been partial to Rafi. He said “god gift term anavasyamaa romba common aa ippo use aardu”.. but idu Rafi kee thaan 100% porundu”. This person could sing “as intricately as a lady without sounding thin”, “cover any mood”, “versatility odey perfect example Rafi”. Yesu said most important is the comfort level over ranges which makes you feel God has been partial to Rafi. (But Of course in Rafi’s early career (1950’s) the voice was relatively feeble).

To people exposed to Rafi’s talent, these or any amount of praise can only seem less. I just wish he was alive and you people could get a live chance to hear him. Probably you can get hold of the DD album for the Geet Gaata Chal series where the first four episodes were dedicated to Rafi. Rafi is on camera singing “O Duniya Ke Rakwaaley” and many other songs. If you see and hear the last part you will realize why SPB said “impossible”. I think particularly those people who have talked about scales w.r.t Rafi should see this album. Its a known fact in industry that Rafi ruled high pitch and there is no male singer better in switching notes so easily. There are artists who can go beyond but then they sound strained or they don’t have pleasant voices when they venture into those territories.

Many singers of today are his compulsive followers. But they end up inheriting only part of his quality. Md. Aziz ended up with a sad voice. Mahendra Kapoor with a thick nasal voice. Anwar with a nasal voice. Sonu Nigam with a feminine voice. Rafi neither had a soft voice nor a heavy (bass) voice he had a good voice. Importantly did not strain at high notes, and voice if at all only became better at higher notes. If you see him singing it will remind you of Janaki. However diff the song is or the note is he will be smiling and singing. It is unthinkable that he cannot sing something.

There seems to be lot of talk about “Shankara Bharanamo” song. SPB has sung many a great numbers and things being said about this song in this forum are rather amusing, particularly b’cos 3 out of 4 people who can be called as singers will be able sing it and at least one out of 10 will sing it with the same effect. There are lot of other songs of SPB where this great singer has played with songs in total control. You will find most south Indian singers who have had a good exposure say that it is beneficial to learn Hindustani as it gives better breath control and improves expression.

Rafi was not only able to glide over a song, the important thing was that he could express each word/sound when singing. It is one thing to hold your breath, start and reach a crescendo (high note), as like in “Shankara”, “Anbey (Yennai kaan villaye)” it is different ballgame if you have to do it from low notes or suddenly switch notes. With practice the former can be done, latter requires a special gift. Rafi had a natural ability to do the latter. In “Tum joh mil gaye ho” there is such a transition in the “karwaan mil gaya” part. I have never seen anyone do justice to most of his songs in my life time. In “parda hai parda” quawaali the similar part is “kar doon to, Akbar mera naam”. In fact most of his songs will have these specialty as it was his natural ability to sing freely in a wide range at the same time giving that extra expression.

Whereas SPB takes us to heavens with “Idu oru pon maali”,”Ilaya nila” “bisiladarenu”(kannada), when he sings Rafi’s song it lacks the punch or expression, though it has the bass. But at least most agree that SPB does some justice to original, whereas most others murder the original.

One trivial point I would like to add is that singing in Hindi is harder. There are more “JHA”,”CHA”,”HA”,”THA”, “KHA”,”JA”,”FA”. These take away the breath faster. The more expressive you are the more air you are using up. Just singing from Nabhi will not help, your throat also needs to do a lot, for singing in Hindi, Bengali etc. SPB makes you fall in love with his south Indian songs but same cannot be said about his Hindi songs. If you just glide through words having these sounds, you will never be expressive. Doing this as well as reaching high notes is not easy. Rafi had this gift and that’s why it is difficult to imagine anyone else in his shoes. Song “Chalkaaye jaam” has so much expression that it is unthinkable how anyone can sing it. When Rafi switches to a high note with “Mitwaa” in the song “Chaahunga mein tughey” you cannot replicate it with bass. Most others will sound as if they are shouting in such cases. That man’s throat had the ability to freely sing at such levels.

Versatility is not just the ability to sing in various styles, more important is how good you are singing in those styles. You have lot of Ghazal singers today but when Rafi sings a Ghazal you will sit up and take notice. You don’t have to be part of the Ghazal listeners crowd. This is one important aspect. Whatever style you sing you should be able to pull the common man to listen and not just a particular crowd. Pick “parda hai parda” or any qawalli and it will stand tall among other qawalli’s.

Variety is amazing :

songs of Guru Dutt’s Khagaz key phool or songs like abhi naa jao chod key, Aaja teri yaad aayi, Aaj kal mein dhal gaya, Aaj kal terey merey pyaar, Aasmaan sey aaya farishta, Dil ney pyaar kiya hai, Deewana mujh saa nahi, Din dhal jaaye, Duniya paagal hai, Jaane walon jara, Dil joh na kaha saka, Dil key jharokon mein, Dil kaa bhavar, Chalkey teri aakkhon sey, Kar chaley hum fida, khilona jaan kar tum, Woh jab yaad aay, Woh hain jara khafa, Vaadian mera daaman, Pathar key sanam, Chaand mera dil, Main zindagi kaa saath, Mainey poocha chaand sey, sun sun jaalima, Koi jab raah na paay, hum to chaley pardes, badan pey sitaarey, laal chadi maidaan, Tum jo mil gaye, O meri shaahey, Sau baar janam lengey, Tum mujhey yoon bhula, Tumney mujhey dekha, Terey merey sapney, Tumny pukaara hum chaley aay

Name a situation/mood and Rafi’s song will be there on the top.

    Kishorefanji,-Post-3288.

Firstly, there is no theory that says “tougher the song the better it is to listen to”. Further Ghantasala basically belonging to the group of pure classical singers has sung his most quoted songs in classical style(Andaaz) where as Rafi as a pure playback singer has sung his filmy songs in entirely filmy andaaz which, in terms of quality, popularity and appeal surpass Ghantasala’s songs miles ahead. Rafi’s unprecedented success fame and popularity are sufficient to stand as evidences to it.
Secondly, as regards Rafi-Lata issue if you listen to the Rafi-Lata duets, a person with a little musical ears will understand how rafi outweighs lata. Even when both of them have sung a particular song, it has been the rafi’s number that became the legend. There are so many examples. You can yourself find it out. Lata herself said in an interview with the Daily Hindu(It is available and you can find it out)”Rafi sahab could surpass any singer with his voice range whether it is me, Asha , mannada or any other singer”.
Thirdly, in one of your posts you wrote that kishore dethroned Rafi. This is simply an impossibility devoid of logic. A singer is finally judged on the basis of inter-alias, two basic factors.
First his versatility to sing all types of songs. Please see the list provided by the list provided by Bhagchandaniji’s post 3262 that reflects Rafi’s amazing versatility and then see how many songs Kishore has to his credit that match this list.
Secondly the period of dominance. Rafi virtually ruled Bollywood for long uninterrupted twenty years during the fifties and the sixties. Although Kishore had some prominence during the early seventies his era was frequently interrupted by rafi during different times. From 1974 Rafi’s “Tere galiyon mein’ and continuing through 1977 from “Kya hua tera wada” Rafi again staged a big come-back. The reason is Kishore’s songs, notwithstanding the westernized style that made him initially popular during the early seventies, lacked the long lasting effect and appeal that the legendary songs of rafi possessed.
Thirdly from the point of view of qualitative judgement Rafi’s songs, from any perspective of comparison far outweighs kishore’s songs. That is the overall verdict of all learned musical experts. Rafi’s undisputed No: 1 position as a playback singer is a historical truth as is evident from the recognition and fame that he has achieved. No singer dead or alive can dethrone Rafi.
Finally I would request you not to make statements that creates unnecessary arguments. Your repeated coming back in Rafi’s site indirectly proves the popularity of Mohammed rafi which is in acceleration every day that follows the other.
    Regards

Hum logon ne ghantasala ke songs ke bare me comment kiye, ki woh rafi songs se bhi tough hai, ghantasala fans ki nahin, zara dhire se socho. Rahi lata mangeshkar ki baat, woh bahut hi badi singer hai having beautiful voice no doubt about it and in hfm definitely on top & to say in some songs even ahead of rafi.

    Dear hansji,

thanks for “Sab shamil ho magar”.

The following is the immortal song of rafi sahab. “Illahi tu sunley hamari duan” from the film “Chhote Nawab”. I don’t think one can help shedding tears on hearing this song. No singer on earth dead or alive can sing such a sad song with such emotion.

Thank you very much Devika for the post. I am sorry that I am responding so late. Actually in between these disturbing elements in the attire of Kishore Kumar fans keep cropping up. Anyway coming to your post, it was very apt and a brilliant analysis of Rafi non-filmi gem ‘Sham ke Deepak jale’. The way Rafi has has delivered the word ‘shaam’ is simply out of this world. You are instantly immersed into the sweetness of the song. Every single word of the song so craftily sung that the entire song is like a divine journey.

I would request KK fans to identify one song of Kishore Kumar which can qualitatively be equated to this song of Rafi saab.

yeh asha aur lata ke statements par kabhi “nahi’ jaana.

just believe “your ears”. asha want to sell more of rdb’s cds for royalty and other purposes.

in one live show in mumbai, sudesh bhosle was asked to sing by asha, two rdb sung songs?? it was terrible to the ears and many left their seats .

what was the reaction of the audiences. they hooted the singer and refused to talk to the singer during the interval. the talented sudesh bhosle was standing aloof – in one corner.

no doubt, both are great singers . but, their statements are to be taken “with” a pinch of salt. i am telling this confidently as i have many of their utterances heard and reported by people from the trade.

the latest is that lata mangeshkar feels for sachin tendulkar as her son. before it was sunil gavaskar, kapil dev, dilip kumar, jaikishan, c ramchandra etc etc in many roles.

I will not stop singing lata ji had said. But how many of listeners would like to hear lata at age 83.

to remain in news people “will” say many things. dont bother about them much.

All accepted. Ghatasala is really great. I never denied.
But clarity, elasticity, sweetness of Lata and Rafi are not found anywhere in playback singing.
    Ghantasala has his own qualities.
I finish the topic by saying one line……. When Rafi sings clasical, it looks so simple and light, most difficult murkis and harkats have been taken by him effortlessly. In fact, he is a gharana in himself. When Ghantasala sings a light song, it becomes classical. Here is the trouble, though it is good to listen.
for example, when rafi complimented Ghatasala by saying that he is better, there were two reasons. Ist, Rafi did some error in first antara and wanted re-recoding but Lata refused. second, Rafi was a most humble person. As the antara forwards, one can feel the strength of Rafi and same sweetness comes back in 2nd 3rd and 4th paragraphs, which is never experienced with others.

In chal Ud ja re panchhi, Ghantasala should have complimented Rafi, but he did not. Humbleness differs.Undoubtly, Rafi version is far far superb. Ghatasala is very accurate but singing the song like a kirtan or bhajan. Rafi knew the mood of song and did 100% justice. In fact, the song was earlier sung by Talat mehmood, but a failure. You can search it on You tube.
If it is classical, I prefer mehdi hassan or bade Ghulam Ali/ Kumar Gandharva.
As far as Lata is concerned, it is most clear voice i ever heard.Bade Ghulam ali appreciated her. perhaps, no one comes close to her in females. Rafi and lata dominated each other in different songs. Lata has appreciated two singers- Mehdi Hassan and Rafi. You can see the comments on net. Manna De openly appreciated rafi and said clearly that inspite of his( manna De) better knowledge in classical, Rafi was always ahead in classical duets. That is the voice magic Rafi created. When he sang a song where hero is drunk, you feel it in the voice of Rafi. And similarly, many moods are reflected truly n his clear friction-less voice .

  11. Anurag Malhotra says:

Both are accurate, melodious, divine and possess extremely good raw material in the form of their voice. Doing comparison is not fair.
Range of Rafi was more wider which made Lata uncomfortable. The different style of rolling his voice is also a unique feature of rafi. Listen to the following songs :
    a. Rut hai milen ki saathi mere aa re
    b. Tasveer teri dil mein jis din se basai hai ( feel the elasticity in voice of Rafi , which
    Lata missed)
    c. Dhire-Dhire Chal Chand gagan mein
    d. Main chalee main chalee pichhe-2 Jahan, yeh na puchho kidher , yeh na puchhoh
    kahaan………. Rafi superseeded un-questionably.
Of course there are songs where Lata did better.
but overall, I give Rafi 9.8 out of ten ; and 9.65 to Lata.
If you want more proof then listen to Rafi’s solo songs, Islamic qualees, Non-film ghazals and Bhajans.
Because duets were made keeping in mind style of both singers.
Listen to rafi’s non-film song ” Maine socha tha agar maut se pehle pehle….” or the un-released song ” Bite dino ki yaad satati hai aaj bhi…”
and the film song ” saj rahi gali meri maa chunar gote mein….” No one else could have attempted such a singing.
No one could copy rafi 10%, as the basic raw material is missing.
Today’s singer who copy Rafi lack the raw material, the melody, the feel and the accuracy, and most important , a very strong classical base, which he used in playback singing. In a simple looking song, if you listen carefully, you find the murkys taken effortlessly which equals the grade of Mehdi Hassan ( and yet it sounds simple due to Rafi’s effortless but very difficult singing). Now, who-ever copied Rafi sounds like screaming at higher pitch, or they have feminine voice ( Sonu Nigam) and less accuracy. Divinity is out of question at all.
I listened Asha commenting recently that she sang a song better than Rafi.
She is a great singer, but does not fall in category of Lata and Rafi. Listen to a song ” “Roka kai baar mene dil ki umang ko…” ( Film: Mere Sanam)Listen Rafi singing the line ” O jane jaan…” in 3 various styles ( the last one superb”) which asha lacked. The ornaments made of Silver will never match Gold ornaments. That is the difference. Rafi and Lata have golden voice, but Rafi little more golden.

  12. Raam Krishna Bharti says:

    Shanker Jaikishan commented,
” No doubt Kishore Kumar is a good singer. He sang beautifully for me in Rangoli. But Ajab Hai Dastan was simply not Kishore’s cup of tea. The mukhdas and antaras required a singer of Rafis range and classical background”.

    you wrote
“rafi does not create much ice for a music lover”

rafi songs were not rendered for creating ice or steam or water for those lazy, bed-ridden idlers, who wait for the braying animal to come to their window after doing his dhobi-ghat duties and render his dhenchu raag with his uplifted tail. nobody, not even rafi could save these people afflicted with the virus of dhenchu raag. we rafi fans pray for these people to get the next birth soon with normal human ear-drums to appreciate the soothing rafi songs.

    amen.

    you also wrote
“since rafi has sung them, people are habituated to them and if the same songs would have been sung by other singers, people too would have been habituated to them.”

at least you agree that people are habitual to rafi songs. these people are the opposite of the dhenchu raag people and have normal human ear-drums and matching brains so they could not have liked anything else than those soothing rafi gems.

it was well for music lovers that the great mds of golden era identified and kept away from their music this dhenchu raag virus.

what happened to those who did not heed the warning of these mds is history. this dhenchu raag virus totally destroyed hfm.

Only some songs rafi can be accepted as special and in many others it is not the case.

what a voice, what a rendition, what a pronounciation, what a depth in the voice, what the expressions, what the depth in voice, what the melody,

the melodious ‘humming’ at the start of the song takes ones breath away.

the variety of songs you link are just awesome, i can not restrain myself from praising you for the immense taste you have got for good music.

any one who is a true music lover acknowledges the greatness & incomparable status of rafi sahab.

please keep on pposting gems after gems as i at this tender age is still struggling hard to listen to all the gems of rafi sahab, songs posted by you, binu ji, Bhagchandaniji, musharafji, bhartiji, tirwediji, and others are surprisingly missed by my ears at times

    regards,

and those all as well who understand this language, or even for those who do not, just listen to this rafi sahab song.

i bet you all will not only like but love this immortal & sweetest voice, rafi sahab in this language has conveyed all the expressions beautifully.

a challenge to kishore kumar and ghantasala fans to present a song as soulful & melodious as this one. rafi sahab has the most beautiful voice any human can ever has.

rafi fans listen, enjoy & cherish this immortal voice,

Let me re-post the comment that remains ‘under moderation’ till now (since yesterday). If the earlier one also gets cleared… no problem, it will be a repetition. This is the post:

    bhattacharya babu (post 3228),

if your knowledge about music in general and rafi saab in particular is so hopelessly inadequate, then let me try to educate you and knock at your closed mind and tell you the genres in which he is special (though i know that telling it to a biased guy like you is like ‘bhains ke age been bajana’):

    (1) gazals.
    (2) geets.
    (3) bhajans.
    (4) classical based songs.
    (5) romantic songs.
    (6) sad (pathos-laden) songs
    (7) patriotic songs
    (8) qawalis
    (9) folk-based songs.
    (10) rock and roll
    (11) light/ fun songs.
    (12) non-filmi bhajans, geets and gazals
    etc. etc.

please listen to songs of rafi saab of all above genres (you will find in abundance in each genre) with an open mind free from the disease of ‘regional bigotry’ (that you are suffering from) and then comment, otherwise don’t exhibit the pathetic state of your mind that it is in.

    Moderator ji,

Of late, there has been a curious inconsistency in the matter of clearing the posts on this site. My comment posted yesterday at 7-30 PM remains ‘under moderation’ status till now. Comments posted later have appeared. Some comments get posted instantly, some go under moderation. Many Rafi fans have pointed out this fallacy that is happening.

It is high time the matter is looked into with concern. Is it merely a technical fault or something else… ? please let us know.

and with these two serious songs, there is one light song picturised on mehmood

  41. Musharraf says:

    Dear friends,

Just listen to this romantic song of the Greatest Rafi. songs of other singers will simply fade away.

These Dr. Chandrasekhar, bhushan, kishorefan, abhishek etc are just a bunch of jokers, it is their tendency to make jokes & laughters. they must seek a comedy site, as that site would be a proper place for them for jesting & clowning.
if they post some of their humor, here, we should just smile over their funniness (inka dil rukhne key liye) & keep on writing about rafi sahib. let them burn in their own jealousy as rafi is the giant in front of their dwarf singers.
they are mere scorpions aur “bichoo ka to kaam hi dung marna hey”. all their pathetic queries have been very well dealt with our renowned commentator’s such as hansji, binuji, mahadevikaji and other rafi fans.
just ignore them, their comments are not worth replying.

  43. Binu Nair says:

Hans, don’t be so awry. My posts carry the true essence from the point of music and are objective and hence have succeeded for so many years. Very few (in this site) belong to that class. Take it easy.

3228, bhattacharya babu ji, toh aakhir aap ne bhi do posts dal diye edhar, zara dhire se boliyega, taaki yeh jhoote rafi fans chillana shuru karenge, rafi high pitch songs ki tarah.
