Mohd Rafi

Mohd Rafi

On July 31st hundreds of MOHD RAFI lovers and admirers will be arriving at Mumbai’s Juhu Mosque to pay homage to the volcano of talent and powerhouse of amazing versality IMMORTAL MOHD RAFI.

July 31 will never be the same for Mohd Rafi’s innumerable fans the world over. For on this day in 1980 Rafi Saab as he was fondly called, left for ever, succumbing to a massive heart attack at age 55.

Three days earlier, Rafi had recorded his last song for friend Dharmendra : “to kahin aas paas hai dost” from the movie Aas Paas.

That fateful day, as Rafi left the recording studio for his home one last time, he gently turned to Laxmikant-Pyarelal team and said : Mai chaloon? Few moments later Rafi repeated : “To main chalta hoon“. This surprised the composers as Rafi had never bade them farewell in this manner before.

The above words proved to be prophetic. Three days later, Rafi Saab breathed his last at 10.35 on July 31 at the Bombay hospital – leaving behind a golden legacy of immortal songs for every mood and occasion. Earlier on ONE occassion Rafi saab had confided to his GURU NAUSHAAD ALI SAAHEB, ” Mai bhara mehfil se uth jaaon-ga.” Prophetic words – once again.

Music lovers were so much shocked by the news that people thronged the streets from Mahim to Juhu to have a last glimpse of Rafi saab. It was raining heavily. Weeping men and women were showering flowers from the balconies of their homes on Rafi Saaheb all along the way in the biggest ever procession of mourners.

Mumbai has never seen such a farewell say Rafi lovers and police officers managing the crowds.

Naushaad Ali saab aptly said :”Tu hi tha pyar ka sagar, Nafrat ki is duniya mein. Ganimat thi teri awaz, Nafrat ki is duniya mein.

Mohd Rafi strode the film music scene as a colossus for two decades. Leaving behind a rich and varied legacy of songs, is what every music lover is grateful for. In these difficult times, these are songs to live and love by.

Says Uttara Kumar in the times of india crest edition article dated july 24:

There is one Rafi song for every occassion in our lives. And no one could sing of the joy and pain of love like he did. If there are 101 ways of saying ‘I love you” in a song Mohd Rafi knew them all.

On one occassion says composer Khayyam : Rafi recorded the song : ‘Jaane kya dhundti rehti hai yeh aankhen mujhme ‘ when he was running a temperature of 102 degrees.

Never, would Rafi cancel a recording as it would render losses to the producer said accordian king Enoch Daniels at Mr D.B. Mathur’s Rafi tribute musical show at delhi on July 24th. “Rafi would never say NO to anyone and would record songs with upcoming composers/producers for a token payment of Rupee one – all in a closed envelope.

Tributes to Mohd Rafi are never ending. An RJ from Delhi called up last week and said : Rafi saaheb ke gaane ke wajah se duniya ke bahut RADIO STATIONS chalte hai

I will add to say “even thirty years after death Rafi saab continue to look after innumerable singers and musicians, radio stations, music companies etc”.

The happiness that Mohd Rafi gave us through his songs can never be RETURNED. We can only thank and remember MOHD RAFI SAAHEB.

YUG AAYENGE, YUG JAAYENGE, RAFI SAAHEB KE GAANE YUN HI CHALTE RAHENGE.

MOHD RAFI LOVERS WILL MEET AT THE JUHU MOSQUE, SANTACRUZ ON JULY 31ST AND PAY HOMAGE TO THE SINGING GOD.

RAFI FOUNDATION WILL PUT FLOWERS ON THE “INTACT” RAFI GRAVEYARD ON BEHALF OF RAFI LOVERS WHO WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE IT.

PRAY THAT BLESSINGS AND HAPPINESS BE SHOWERED ON MOHD RAFI LOVERS – AT ALL TIMES.

    Binuji,

As usual, straight from the heart. Sometimes, I marvel at the dedication of people like you for Rafi Saab, but then the man himself was like that, he earned respect and affection in his own silent way and through his innumerable songs.

Among many Rafi nites on July 30 and 31st we had Rafi Nite in Calicut (some of the greatest Rafi fans live in this city) and a photo exhibit of Rafi Saab with rare collection from his friend Ahmed Sahib (used to live in Bombay). We had our personal Rafi nite with a singer called Fazal Shaikh from Mangalore brought in just for a few die hard Rafians at my nephews place. Our way of celebrating our legend of legend.

Just to let you know that Rafi Saabs fans are every corner of India including this small town called Calicut. Rafi Saab had two shows conducted here and I was fortunate to attend one as a child.

Another unrelated topic. Times Now has weekend show called Total Recall about Bollywood cinema. Which had focused on Rafi Saab in the beginning. Today it was Kishore Kumar. One author called Ganesh Anantharaman (he published book about hindi film music) mentioned that Lata Mangeshkar told him the best male singer she has come across is Kishore Kumar?!! Do anyone agree? I believe that knowing the character of Lata (person, not the singer)I believe that she must have expressed this as a person she was very self centric and nasty and had her way to reign in the top at any cost. My other Rafi fans feedback is welcome on this. Thank you. Sal

Binu ji and all Rafi lovers (Post 42)

Yes, the Pyare Lal Bhawan at Delhi on 31st July 2010 evening was absolutely jam packed. I was lucky to attend that program. The singers were great. Their devotion, preparedness for the program was wonderful. It was all Rafi and Rafi’s songs reverberating in the hall. Felt very very nice, nostalgic and emotional. Rafi saab is like a family member for all of us. Great work done by the organizers. Many congratulations.

I would like to thank Mr. Zorawar who accommodated my request for the entry pass for me even though I requested him only on the last day (morning of July 31) as I was away from Delhi. I am obliged.

  8. Dear Rafi Fans,

Our Hubli is a moderate city with 10 lakh population. Here there are a couple of Rafi Lovers’ Clubs.

On 31.07.2010 we had assembled at J K Katkar’s Cultural Foundation here and had an opportunity to watch a unique C.D. (provided by yet another Rafi fan, an ex-officer of RBI) which contained details of Rafi’s childhood, his career in the beginning etc. + his songs from the days of Jugnu unto Aas Paas.

We meet there every Thursday evening. Most of the songs sung by us there are of Rafi ! Rafi has gifted ven us songs for all occasions you see !

    Enough at the moment.

    Regards to all Rafi fans.

CONGRATS RAFI LOVERS FOR PAYING ONE OF THE LARGEST HOMAGE TO OUR MOHD RAFI SAAHEB. 9400 homages around the world in the month of july for mohd rafi – is a big day for music lovers.

YESTERDAY WAS WATCHING DOORDARSHAN ONE, DD ONE and saw the rafi foundation delhi prograame of july 31st being telecasted.

i was told that the hall of 700 was packed an hour before the event commenced. numerous mohd rafi lovers saw the programme standing . this means that the delhi rafi foundation “must” plan a hall with 1200 capacity next time around.

the singing at the event by rafi singers – was class and quality personified. it could match any “classy musical programme” held . well done mr.zorawar, ashish kapoor, g.b.mathur and the entire team.

another delhi homage at kamani auditorium by mr.g.b.mathur – a die-hard mohd rafi fan need to be mentioined here. mr.mathurs team works for “this” event about ten months prior. the musical had about 50 artistes or more displaying their talents. it will need a full article to describe the musical schedule which included sophisticated choreography. the comparing and the musical support were simply “outstanding”.
the chief guest was mr rajan nanda, chairman escorts group who spoke about the great qualities of mohd rafi . his wife mrs ritu nanda in her polished speech – spoke for ten minutes on the songs of mohd rafi, how rafi saab had sung baharon phool barsaao during her wedding sangeet programme and more.

congrats . both the events were part of the diamonds among the 9400 homage programmes held in july 2010 – to remember mohd rafi saaheb.

when even ordinary words r rendered from the pure heart, the voice becomes eternal, its the immortal signature of our Rafi sahab that he makes every song with a forever touch of his. The way he used to add eternity to the truly meaningful lyrics is just a heavenly effect. Listening Rafi sahab feels as if every words r full of life.

Following this tradition of the master every rafi lover who writes here, their words becomes a part of us and what to say of Binu ji who is already so much dedicated towards the master, Binuji`s words r always extraordinary and perfect in shedding the impact over us.
however, Ur effort in this regard is also extremely inspiring sanjeevji. I read in news article ur phone number has Rafi sahab`s date of birth in it. Great!

What makes rafi saheb unique from other personality?
According to his son Shahid Rafi, when some body asked rafi saheb
“Rafi Saheb aap ne he gana bahout acha gaya,tu fauran ungli Asmaan Par utthi thi aur kehte ,ye sab ALLAH ka karam hai. According to him he fear Almighty GOD very much.thatswhy he never feel inferior or superiority complex.
Since all the things are given by GOD , we must always thanks Almighty.
That will boost our inner self confidence and Strong Confindence in GOD.
I Had seen Rafi Saheb In my dream continous 3 times ,walking with him in street, talking politely and encouraging me to join singing career.THis may sound you strange and odd , but it happens with me.Due to my personal reason i coudnt make up my mind.

When the legendry KL Saigal heard a 15 year old boy get up and sing in front of a large audience gathered there to hear Saigal Saab, an epic of unmeasurable proportions was getting its beginning. With no sound system or cutting edge equipment that we have today that could make anyone sound like a singer, the young boy with his most potent resource, his voice, left a tremendous impact on Saigal Sahab who said that the boy would achieve great things in art of singing. If Saigal Sahab was alive to see what that 15 year old boy achieved, he would have said that his estimate about the you was very modest as greatness was just the beginning of what he achieved, his achievements stand monumental at the upmost pinnacle of not only singing but of the entire fabric of the music world.

A man who gave the innumerable impressions of his great voice in each passing decade, impressions that have left a permanent mark in our hearts and minds a true gentleman who only had good to say about others including those who shamefully tried to sabotage his career and failed miserably.

  30. rafi saab was also a great devotional singer. most of his bhajans are still rendered today by temple devotees. one will never get tired listening to such bhajans as man tar phat hari darashan ko aaj, o duniya ke rakhwaale, insaf ka mandir, sukh ke sab saathi, jis ka saathi hai bhagawaan and many more.

RAFI saaheb LOVERS, many thanks for WRITING IN few appreciative words on the above article – there is but one sun, one moon and one mohd rafi.
doston, the fact remains that mohd rafi saab through his grand works in singing and examples of loving humanity – has given a small time rafi lover like me, so much material – to write about. thanks.

mohd rafi lovers, i hope will “not” complain about news coverage of saab’s 30th punyatithi this time.
few facts : Almost all the news channels, the print media and theatres across were airing mohd rafi songs and his life and times. radio stations from u.k. called us at the rafi foundation and wanted to know about the shrandajali being offered at the JUHU mosque grave yard of mohd rafi. from distant assam mohd rafi fans called up and reported that news coverage from mumbai had appeared in newspapers . they were “happy” that the mohd rafi grave has survived and is in fact intact. thankyou pti news bureau for reporting the news correctly.

Nine thousand homage musical shows for mohd rafi were held and this must be a record . it must straightaway head to the “guiness book of world records “not” the limca book of records”.

inspite of heavy rains in mumbai rafi lovers gathered in strength at the juhu mosque to pay respects to the golden voiced melodious mohd rafi.

mohd rafi lovers bought flowers from the dadar wholesale phool market in kilogrammes and placed on the holy six feet land – early morning itself. mohd rafi lovers from distant places had called “in” earlier and requested that flowers be kept on their behalf as their homage . this was done.

thank you mr.vijay nafde – mumbai and ahmed bhai – calicut (friends of mohd rafi) for making a special dvd and timely distribution to 30 mohd rafi clubs – to be shown on july 31st.
uttaraji thanks . for writing a full page life story on mohd rafi in the every saturday “crest” edition of times of india news paper on july 24th.
thanks sahara mumbai for airing a 30 minute special on mohd rafi with ustands taking part and sharing their moments with songs, harmonium and all.

thankyou headlines today for a special great story on the singing god. this time many regional tv centres and newspapers made special reports .

the emotions this time were so high that even record rains could “not” stop mohd rafi lovrs from coming over to the juhu mosque or to the homage shows all over.
a big thankyou to mohd rafi lovers. “yeh pyaar ka caravan – yun hi chalta rahega.”

Let them know that how much people miss melody even today as they only play few patterned song of so many singers that play monotonously every day.
When radio would play rafi song even more as their countles light and hit Rafi saab`s song, it would reach subconsciouss of everyone and would surly boost our compaign of Bharat ratna.

And I agree with your RJ friend who says that millions of radio stations around the world are running because of the shahenshah’s songs. I happen to be involved with a radio program too as an RJ and this morning, it was my fortune to be able to bring on air a program on Rafi Sahab. We have been doing this for the past couple of years. Playing beautiful songs of Rafi Sahab for the whole of the 0ne-hour program and talking about him. Today the theme was “Rafi sings for different heroes”. But is it a surprise that from the list of songs I had prepared, we had to leave out about 5 or 6? There just wasn’t enough time. There will never be enough time for Rafi Saab’s songs. We will never ever have enough.

I am so grateful for the fact that you mentioned about putting flowers on Rafi Saab’s grave for those fans who could not be there for yesterday’s homage ceremony. Thank you so very much for doing this. We could not be there, but our hearts and our prayers were.
    Nasreen

Thirty years ago today Mohammad Rafi Sahib completed his earthly mission. I take this opportunity to thank Allah Almighty for giving us the opportunity to spend our earthly time during the period when He had decried to bestow upon us an additional blessing in the form of Rafi Sahib. What amount of pleasure his voice has provided us! And he was the first one to point out that it was His blessing by pointing towards the heavens when showered with acclaims for his singing. It is hard to imagine the shape playback singing would have taken had the Indian film industry did not get Rafi Sahib to render those beautiful songs. Songs of love, melancholy, happiness, separation, union, etc. were beutifully written by the poets and composed by music directors to be enacted by actors with different personalities. Rafi Sahib delivered those songs with utmost sincerity matching the mood and the persona of the actor. But he never overlooked the fact that he was doing his job not only to satisfy the need of the film situation but also to provide pleasure to the Almighty’s creation in the form of his singing.
For all my life I have enjoyed his songs. I cannot give him anything in return. I can only pray to Allah that He rewards Rafi Sahib for the enormous service that he provided to the people of the subcontinent. May his soul rest in peace and on the Day of Judgment may he be rewarded a place in Jannah. Ameen!

Binuji, a great essay and a very great tribute to the son of the soil, the legendary Rafi Sahab. Words can never describe this super human phenomenon, yet reams after reams have been pouring from all directions on occasion of the 30th death anniversary. Several newspapers, including the one mentioned by you TOI and Uttara Kumari, have given extensive coverage to Rafi Sahab. The visual media was not far behind too, as even two regional Telugu channels RAJ TV and ETV2 have today telecast half hour tributes to Rafi Sahab. With the launch of the Mohammed Rafi Academy today, I am sure that the legacy of Rafi Sahab will be further carried forward. Thanks for a good write up.
