YAAD NA JAYE, The Rafi Magic

This information is shared by Mr. Zorawar Chhugani of Rafi Foundation Memorial Society, New Delhi.

“Apne Naghmon Ke Sahare Zindagi Bichha Gaya,
Apni Taanon Se Jahan Walon Ke Dil Bharma Gaya,
Jab Tak Is Duniya Ki Mehfil Mein Tu Raha Ae Rafi,
Zindagi Ke Saaz Par Tu Kitne Geet Ga Gaya”

YAAD NA JAYE, The Rafi Magic Needless to say that Rafi Sahab has been one voice that has touched everybody with
a) Love (Janam Janam Ka Saath Hai Nibhane Ko)
b) Masti (O Dilber Janiye Tere Hain Hum Tere)
c) Nostalgia (Dil Ka Soona Saaz Tarana Dhoodenga)
d) Devotion (O Duniya Ke Rakhwale)
e) Appreciation (Yeh Reshmi Zulfen Yeh Sharbati Aankhen)

There can be innumerable adjectives added to the voice, singing and personality of the great legendary singer Mohd Rafi Sahab. Since the bhakts of Rafi Sahab are not able to find enough adjectives, they organize programmes in his memory all across the world to spread the khushboo of his versatile qualities.

Rafi Foundation Delhi chapter had organized a programme last year also to launch the biography on Rafi Sahab written by one of our members, Shri Vinod Viplav.

YAAD NA JAYE, The Rafi Magic In the same manner, Rafi Foundation Memorial Society (Delhi Chapter of Rafi Foundation) will be organizing the programme YAAD NA JAYE, The Rafi Magic on 30th July’08 at Rajendra Bhawan, DDU Marg, New Delhi on the occasion of 28th death anniversary of Rafi Sahab.

This year Mohd. Rafi Award for Excellence has been initiated by the society which will be awarded each year to a person who has been doing excellent work in spreading social awareness in any field like environment, health, music, art, etc.
Dr. K.K.Agarwal of Heart Care Foundation of India will be given the award for the year 2008.
Shri Anil Kumar Chaudhary, President, Delhi Pradesh Yuva Congress will the Chief Guest of the evening.

Also, each year our programme will carry a social message on all its invitation cards, banners, backdrop, etc. The message for the year 2008 is “Agar Bachani Hai Yuva Pidi, Toh Bandh Karo Yeh Cigarette Bidi”.

All Rafi Fans are invited at the venue to enjoy the programme and cheer up the society.

It’s a Dream Come True for me.

The biggest achievement of life is make other happy and become oxygen for Life which Rafi Sahab is real example but Govt. Of India is deaf and blind that such a great soul of India is kept deprived from “Bharat Ratna”. India will be honoured honouring Rafi Sahab with this award.

lovely write-up by zorawar chugani sahab. i was privy to their musical ‘rehearsal’ on the 28th july at new delhi and was amazed with the number of participants and the enthusiasm shown by all. a full fledged orchestra was ready to help in the rehearsals and a professional singer – mukesh khanna- too had rendered some of the best melodies of rafi sahab. when asked by one singer to ‘bless them’ before their song, mukesh khanna took the mike and said that it was only rafi sahab who could bless all and as long as those blessings of rafi sahab are on us, we need not look towards anyone else. i enjoyed the rehearsals session that went on for more than 4 hours. kudos to the delhi chapter of the rafi foundation and to each one of their very hard working activisits. i missed their actual programme on the 30th july, but i am sure that it would have been something worth remembering by all those who attended the same.

  9. jai rafi saheb………………..i always give tribute 2 rafi saheb on his death anniversary at my home itself wid my lots of pujaris of rafi saheb…

On the twenty eight anniversary of attaining eternity, I pay my respects to this noble and highly accomplished soul. Times will come and go, but…… another Rafi will not come. His famous song….. Dil Kaa Sunaa Saaz Tarana Dhodengga, Mujko Mera Baad Zamanna Dhodengga….. the search goes on endlessly for a replacement, but to no avail. How right Rafi Saab was while singing this number ? May his soul rest in peace in the heavens up there on the top in the galaxy.

dhani ram ji…. majority of the awards in the industry are purchased. see the farce called the ‘filmfare’ awards. and, read what majrooj sultanpuri said about the awards.
a film like mughul-e-azam was voted out for music awards and dil apna aur preet parayee – got the awards. i am sorry to say that some great composers purchased these awards from the back door and also made a syndicate to corner all the films – in pairs. this brought out the early end of madan mohan, jaidev, ghulam mohd, usha khanna and many others.

mohd rafi knew about his class and did not go after ratnas and awards during his lifetime as we all know. rafi is in the hearts and the minds of the people and that according to me is the biggest award – one can aspire to.

award in the name of rafi sahib is a great idea.

I wish that some rafi bhakt/s would launch an award in rafi sahib’s name as prestigious as dada saheb phalke award,an award that rafi sahib has been unjustifiably denied.it will be the most befitting tribute to the greatest singer.

    Film crew visits Rafi’s village
    Documentary on legendary singer soon
    Varinder Walia
    Tribune News Service

Kotla Sultan Singh (Amritsar), July 29
A team of Films Division, led by Kuldeep Sinha, chief producer, today visited the native village of legendary playback singer Mohammad Rafi to shoot a documentary film on him for the first time.

The film will be shown during the forthcoming 39th International Film Festival to be held in Goa from November 22 to December 2.

Talking to The Tribune, Sinha said he had conceived the idea of making a documentary film on Rafi in 1980 and it took about 28 years to implement it.

He said his team had interviewed Rafi’s son Shahid and a number of actors, singers and music and film directors.

The team had already met Shammi Kapoor, Pyare Lal and Amin Sayani and would be shortly interviewing Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Dev Anand and other contemporaries of Rafi.

However, the team comprising filmmaker Bipin Choubal and cameraman Shanker Patnayak were shocked to see that a modern house had been constructed in place of Rafi’s old house.

A former sarpanch of the village, Gurbax Singh Gill (97), and Kundan Singh (84), who had studied with Rafi till the fourth standard, gave fresh information about his childhood days.

The yesteryear singer’s story reads like a fairy tale: Pheeko, a poor barber’s son, lived along with his five older brothers in this nondescript village, which was Muslim dominated before Partition.

His father Hajji Ali Mohammad was a respected member of the Muslim community. At the time of festivals and marriages, he would cook rice in seven colours. Haji shifted to Lahore in 1935-36 and his family followed him a few months later.

Gurbax said there was a fakir who went around the village every day begging alms in the name of Allah.

In his melodious voice, he chanted, “Khedan de din char ni maen….” Young Pheeko began to imitate him.

This was the beginning of the career of the great singer, who won the hearts of millions with his songs.

His father apprenticed him at his uncle’s hair-cutting salon in Lahore, which was a famous film centre in pre-Partition days.

It was Pheeko’s good luck that a famous music director visited the salon and heard him humming softly.

He found his voice a divine gift and asked him to visit his studio. And, the rest is history. Kotla Sultan Singh village is about 25 km from Amritsar and falls in Majitha police district.

There is nothing on this stretch to indicate that Mohammad Rafi belonged to the village. Only on the outskirts of the village there is a signboard saying “Mohammad Rafi Marg”.

Interestingly, Rafi had written his name on the trunk of a mango tree in the village when he was a child. Before leaving for Lahore in 1935-36 with his family, he told the villagers not to cut it because it would remind them of him.

The tree, however, doesn’t exist today. His close friend, Luddan (Kundan Singh Samra), who studied with him till Class IV, says the memories of their childhood are still fresh in his mind.

As I think if there be awad in the name of Mohd rafi the first award should go to Shammi Kapoor.there are many who said that Mohd rafi is the greatest but only Shami Kapoor is honest who almost said he is was because of Mohd rafi. peaople like Dilip Kummar in 1970’s left mohd rafi but shammi still today he remember Mohd Rafi…………

    Salaam to all Rafians

Are there any fans of Mohammed Rafi saab living in the UK? If there are, do you know if there will be any programmes dedicated to Mohammed Rafi saab on Thursday 31st July for his 28th death anniversary?

In 2007 on 31st July on DM Digital channel (Channel 802), they broadcasted a live program where many artists sang Mohammed Rafi saab songs. I am wondering if a similar program will be shown this time around.

Does anyone know if there will be any programmes on any other channels paying tribute to Mohammed Rafi saab? Please can anyone forward me any details.

    Thank you

Rafi saab you are remembered and at the same time missed in each of my days. You were are and will be the best voice in playback singing in India. The bass, height and the brodaness cannot be experienced in any other singer’s voice. The sweetness in uparelled.

    VOICE AS SWEET AS HONEY,
CARRESSING THE PAINS AND HEART OF MANY,
REACHING UNIMAGINABLE HEIGHTS IN MANY A HEARTS,
TOUCHING THE SOUL LIKE A DEVOTIONAL SONG,
    TRAVERSING ACROSS RELIGIONS LIKE BREEZE,
    MISSED EACH DAY SINCE 1980,
YOU BRING TEARS AS YOUR MEMORIES BECOME PAINFUL,
BUT AGAIN WIPED OFF BY YOUR MAGICAL VOICE & SMILE,
MAY YOU LIVE LONG AND BE REMEBERED BY ONE AND ALL,
BECAUSE MY RAFI SAAB IS LIKE A DIAMOND FOR EVER.

  21. Rajiv Varma says:

There may be so many heroes who were dedicated to use Rafi’ voice, but it was Vinod Mehra who prefered and used Rafi’s voice most of the time during his lean period in the seventies. I have never came across any tribute to Vinod Mehra for using Rafi’s voice, which suited him well. Even traditional Rafi heroes like Dharmendra and Jeetendra reduced their loyalty to Rafi and preferred KK for Sholay, Jugnu, Samadhi, Parichay, Khushboo, and so many other forgettable films.

What to say about Rafi saheb- my guru, philospher & guide. All my life since the age of 7-8 years I have grown up listening and singing his songs. Those very songs taught me everything in my life. When me & my family were fighting a ferocius sruggle for life in 1960’s, it’s Rafi saheb soothing voice, those wonderful lyrics & out of this world compositions that kept our hopes alive and supported my beliefs. The intensity was so profound that all his hit songs got embeded in my Brain-chip. I consider myself lucky enough to have watched probably his last stage performance in April’1980 in a remote place called Dalli-Rajhara mines of Bhilai steel plant. His effortless singing I shall remember forever. Now both my college going sons are doing me proud by singing his songs & winning accolades wherever they perform that’s my humble Tribute to this beloved son of INDIA whom my worship as GOD.

The Rafi Excellence Award is a great thought. I suggest that one award must be for excellence in Music for any form of music of any genre and the award could be named : Mohd Rafi Excellence Award.
The second award as mentioned by u for excellence in any other field is a right step to encompass a bigger segment and a bigger thought – both very noble – just as mohd rafi saaheb excelled in many departments of life .

    well done, keep it up…..
