Tum Bin Jaavun Kahan?

This article is from 23 year old, Vikram from Korba, Chattisgarh.

I’m big fan of Rafi sahab as well as mujhe aap Indian film music ka samalochak bhi kah sakte hain. gairjaroori baton ko naa dohraate huye main point par aana chaahunga jiske liye main yeh mail aapko bhej raha hoon…. Shayad aap gour farmaayenge.

1949 (Barsat-Shankar Jaikishan) se lekar 1969 tak rafi sahab Indian film industry ke #1 male playback singer rahe or uske baad ‘Kishor da’ ko yah position haasil hua…

jis song se kishor da or rafi sahab ki tulna ki gayi (jo meri nazar mein bemani hai because dono legend singer ek hi sikke ke do pahlu hain) usse aap sab bhi waaqif honge jo film ‘Pyar ka mausam’ mein shamil hai “ TUM BIN JAAON KAHAN” yah particular song film mein 3 baar hai ….. First time kishor da ka gaya hua ‘bharat bhusan’ ke liye; (Sad) 2nd time rafi sahab ka gaya hua ‘Shashi kapoor’ ke liye (Romantic) or 3rd time again rafi sahab for ‘Shashi kapoor (Sad) jiske bare mein bahut kam log jaante hain….

Download Tum Bin Jaavun Kahan (Sad) (3.07 MB)

Sad version film mein hai par gramophone record mein use shamil nahin kiya gaya hai or isiliye kishor da ka gaya hua sad version rafi sahab ke gaye romantic version se uncha lagta hai otherwise ‘tum bin jaaon kahan’ ka sad version (sung by rafi sahab) 1of best sad song hai Indian film industry ka jisko likha tha ‘Majrooh sahab ne:-

Meri nazar mein to sirf tum ho
Kuch or mujhko pate nahin hai
Tumhari mahfil se uth raha hoon
Magar kahin raasta nahin hai……..

Tum bin jaaon kahan…….!

Kabhi mere gam ki kahani dil se mat kahna
Kahin meri baat chale to sunke chup rahna
Mera kya hai kat jaayegi kahin ye jindagi….
Tumko chahke….tum bin……!

I don’t understand above golden song ko LP record mein kyon shaamil nahin kiya gaya ….Shaayad 1969 ke baad ka itihaas kuch doosra hota….. because is song ke baad kishor da ko #1 singer kaha gaya jo 1969 se pahle sirf dev sahab ke liye hi aawaj diya karte they who bhi Sachin da or Pancham da ke sangeet par.

Thanks to your valuable time… Vikram!

Mr. Anand you say u love KK songs. You you have made you preference clear in your fist line itself. So you have lost the right to judge the song. A judge has to be neutral.

  5. Anand says:

I love KK song. This is lot better than Md. Rafi at any time. Who says KK admitted his version is not better, is bullshit. You believe your ears and make judgement.

  8. Hussein Sheikh says:

Post 28: Rafi saheb’s version is far better than KKs. Otherwise, it would have gone to the hero of the film! KK cannot sing better than Rafi Saheb. This was said by KK himself.

  9. Anil says:

The kishore’s version is better. It is a song which bhartbhushan sings for his son and there is a shade of sadneess in it. THe yodelling clearly brings out the situation and the excact state of mind. rafi’s version is romantic sung nicely but could have been better with some singer like sonu nigam or mukesh. the other rafi version of this song is sad and a very slow number, normally such numbers are used only in film for a situation and not for humming. for example kishore’s last stanza for chalate chalate mere ye or rfai’s rendition of rote hue aate hai sub or kishore’s version of lata’a song in the movie ghar (does not appear on record).
Besides one has to admit that rafi was more adept at high pitch while kishore was excellent at low pitch and kishore had uncharacterstic depth and softness reflected in songs like ” yeh jeevan hai”, “zindagi ka safr”, “aanewala pal”, “kab tak andhere manko chalenge(Batobato me movie in 1980), jeevan se na har jeenewale etc. in this aspect he exceld over rafi while rafi being trained had more firat in his voice but even kishore demonstrated it when needed like the song jab bhi koi kangana bole payal khanak jaye or aankho me hume aapke ( incidentally lata has avoided the taan whcih is taken by kishore as variation)

  10. SANJAY ARORA says:

the only version which people remember even as on date is the rafi saab`s version.
i still remember, mr .raju bharatan ,the journalist had written after some years from the release of this movie in filmfare ,about this song, the words used by him was that rafi saab was jaded off.
Now after so many years i can cocnlude that it was nothing but media management at that time and also after some more years mr.bhartan again rewrinting that nonsense, amounts to media management that one song of kk displces the badshah.
media and bgm were managed in such a way that kk crap from `caravan` hum to hai rahi dil was more popular than the rafi/lata duets from caravan.
now there isno bgm and the truth is as on date caravan is remembered for lrafi/lata duet `kitna pyaar wada`and two other duets by rafi saab from the same film.
this media mangement and fixing of bgm,mr binu nair knows better than me.mr binu nair please’!

    was mr.bhartan under a branch?

Rafi has sung the song for a suave, debonair, romantic Shashi Kapoor in the film and his style of singing suits the character like a glove. Click and see for yourself:

Kishore has sung for a rough, dishevelled and sad vagabondish Bharat Bhushan in the film and his style of singing suits the character like a glove.

    well said Pravin,
It is simply that few cannot digest the immense popularity of Rafi Sab with the amazing range, melody, versatlity, timbre, tone, pitch and the gems of over 26000 songs from 40s to 80s.
LONG LIVE THE BADSHAH AND THE FARISTA RAFI SAB.

    ABIR/DEEPTI/AZIZ

You guys are doing just what KK did, “SHOUT” and being loud doesn’t mean anything, especially form nobody’s, if you guys ever get the chance to read anything worthwhile, read the June edition of OutLook and check for your own selves, the KING rules, the who is who of music, film based or otherwise have time and again reaffirmed that Rafi was the greatest voice, like it or not KK was only third best, behind Mukesh, Music is all about melody, and KK had a real dearth of it, someone has quoted “Phoolon ke rang se”, sound more like a speech than a song…….

Ah! I wonder what would have become of KK had RD not played buddy, popularity is fickle, these days, one Mr Reshammiya is doing the rounds, so does he become great??

No TOM DICK AND KK, sings 26000+ songs, in one life time, wins a National Honour, and is an epitome of humility, that is the virtue of just one “Mohammed Rafi”.

Here is a fact about KK the so called “Great”, every morning on the day of a recording, KK’s secretary would bring a cup of tea to KK, which was a confirmation that the payment for the recording has been received, one day KK waited and waited for his sec to get him the customary cup of tea, upon waiting for an hour, he summoned his sec and quizzed him on why he was delayed, the sec promptly replied, “ Sir recording to app he ke picture ke gane ka hai”. Such was the “Great” man, money oriented, how many wife’s did he have 3..4.. sorry I lost count of it.

Comparing the singing talents of Rafi and KK, is like comparing smiling and crying, that to in a horse voice.

I tried hard but just couldn’t find a trace of versatility in KK’s songs, so monotonous, melody was the underlining feature of Rafis voice. His was the original golden voice. His will be the only one that outlasts time.

    LONG LIVE THE KING.

AND WHO WAS THE ONE WHO WAS TALING ABOUT CHILD AND FATHER ETC. “GROW UP”.

    Pravin

  19. aziz says:

kishoreda is the greatest singer to be ever born on earth…….it is a fact (courtesy: The Hindu…..) that even rafi cannot match his popularity

  20. deepti says:

kishore is God’s gift to india………he is the last word for verstatility…..rafi is also great but kishore was a genius….from the romantic solo, “phoolon ki range se” to the melancholic “jindegi ka safar” he firmly established his kingdom which was at the pinnacle untill his death

  21. abir says:

tum bin jaun kahan was definitely sung far far better by kishore kumarm, I am both rafi and kishore fan but still will say that kishore was just awesome in the song and if u went through the records u can urself see that kishore’s version went to the peak of popularity even though it was not picturised on the hero……and if u also take the pain of searching through history u will come to know that rafi literally fell in depression after his version was surpassed by that of kishore

  22. Tim says:

    Debjyoti,

Really? I thought that Rafi is like a brother for Kishore. Is Kishore so old that he treated Rafi like a child? I can’t find any other way…

  23. Debjyoti says:

KISHORE KUMAR IS THE GREATEST SINGER OF ALL TIMES.RAFI IS LIKE A CHILD TO THIS MAESTRO.

  24. P.Narayanan says:

SMALL CORRECTION IT WAS IN THE EARLY 70S WHEN RAFI SAB APART FROM SINGING FOR L.P USHA KHANNA KHAYYAM SONIK OMI ETC WAS BUSY WITH HIS FAMOUS FOREIGN TOURS.
FROM 80S WE ARE SURE RAFI SAB MUST BE REGALING THE GODS WITH HIS MAGICAL VOICE.
    NARAYANAN

  25. P.Narayanan says:

    DEAR MUSIC LOVERS,
FIRST OF ALL WE SHOULD NOT COMPARE BETWEEN ARTISTES WHICH ONLY NOVICE LIKE VIKRAM CAN DO.
FOR ME AND MY NUMEROUS FRIENDS IT IS THE ROMANTIC VERSION OF RAFI SIMPLY AMAZING N THRILLING TO HEAR TUM BHIN JAVUN KAHAAN………..
ALSO WE DO NOT AGREE ABOUT KISHORE DOMINATION. INFACT RAFI DOMINATED FROM THE 1950 TO 1969 AND THEN SHARED HONOURS WITH HIS CO ARTISTE FROM 1976 TO 1980 TILL HE DEPARTED US.
SO IN TOTAL IT WAS ALMOST 30 YRS OF GOLDEN ERA WITH A BRIEF BREAK DURING THE 80S WHEN RAFI WAS REGALING HIS INNUMERABLE FANS ACROSS THE GLOBE.
WE ARE INDEBTED TO THE KING OF MELODY RAFISAB WHO HAS GIVEN US VARIETY OF SONGS BHAJANS,ROMANTIC,SAD,CHILDRENS,PHILOSOPHICAL,FOLK,PATRIOTIC COMEDY ETC WHICH ARE UNFORGETTABLE AND MAKE OUR HEART SING.

    Harvinder Says:
This is with reference to Mr. harvinder that KK’s version in PKM is better than Rafi’s. I outrightly deny this as if you hear rafi’s version clearly and KK’s too then it will be quite easy to conclude that Rafi’s one is better. I do agree that KK is also good singer but I can call him incident singer, since if you notice that before RD he is nowhere in the picture even mahendra kapoor manage to take the lead from him………Many people believe that Rafi was the second choice in early 70’s, or totally eclipsed but here i would like to prove that he was not vanished or eclipsed ……let me mention the great song of rafi in 70’s ……….Aaj mausam bada.. from Loafer – Dharmendra, churaliya hai………Yaadon ki baraat, o meri mehbooba from Dharam veer , Yunhi tum mujhse for Rajesh khanna for saccha jhuta for in haati mere saati . you can say vanished only when there was no song for singer like Kumar Sanu in today’s era.
I think KK might have been overtaken for some year but not forever like rafi taken from others.
In KK’s era post 80’s Shabbir Kumar & Mohd Aziz was the rage.KK was singing to only for few actors like Rajesh khanna, even Music Director / Film director prefered Rafis clone in KK’s peak time this clearly shows how much Rafis’s impact wast there.

  27. sma says:

What ever happened is now history.I had heared this version of tum bi jaoo kaha long ago and had a feeling that is expressed by the writer. But I don’t think that just bcs of one song Kishore become on top.He was also a great singer though not as good as Rafi saab.Even in Kishore dominated films Rafi had stolen the show with a single song(take Karz,Hath ke safai,Yadom ki barat etc). What ever Kishore had achieved was due to his hardwork, good luck and above all it was his destiny. As a Rafi fan we all know that Rafi saab was the best though for certain period of time(71-76) he was over shadowed by Kishore Kumar.

  28. Nair says:

I agree with Anon. Kishore was the most popular singer only from 1971-76. He was never number 1 after that. Post-Rafi era was not Kishore’s kingdom; he was the only senior around, that’s all.

  29. anon says:

The article is nice, but I refute the claim that Kishore was the number 1 singer after 1969. Kishore was a rage and in vogue from 1971-1976.

  30. Anmol Singh says:

It is fact the Rafi was finalised to sing all the songs for Aradhana. As SD Burman fell ill RD Burman took full advantage of the situation and brought Kishore into reharsals. The following article speaks of how the Burmans ditched Rafi at the cost of Kishore.

    http://inhome.rediff.com/movies/2000/oct/31burman.htm

Though the above article accusses SD Burman along with RD Burman for sidelining Rafi, but looking at the era of 1971 -1975 SD Burman did try to do justise to Rafi Saab.

  31. unknow says:

    dear friends,
The film maker they made around three films on Bhagat singh(maybe more)but the best is when mohd Rafi singed Ae Watan,Ae Watan, humko teri kasam and Kar Chale hum Fide who else can sing these songs,Please see all films on Bhagat Singh(I hope the u know Bhagat singh).
Please listen to ” Jahan Dal Dal Pe chidiya”and there are many other songs on Bharat(India)If u listen these songs I think u will forget all singers jest u remmber only Mohd Rafi.I am not from bharat but when I listen this ” Jahan Dal Dal Pe chidiya” i feel that I am from bharat that is the magic of voice of Mohd Rafi

  32. suhail ahmed says:

Even though the third version of sad songs which was sung by Rafi Saheb didn’t surface in the movie, he was dominant in the romantic version which he had sung for Shashi Kapoor because Kishore sung sad version and it shooted very well in sad mood only. I agree that had the sad version of this song sung by Rafi Saheb would have been released it would have been the greatest hit. I also believe that it was favour of music director for kishore which help to exclude the said version of Rafi Saheb song from the movie. They wanted to see Kishore Kumar in superior position in comparision with Rafi Saheb hence Rafi Saheb sad version remains obscure and hidden.

  33. Administrator says:

For the listening pleasure of those who have not heard this lovely song, I’ve posted a download address in the article above.

  34. Harvinder says:

I write this as a Rafi fan.

My understanding is that song “Tum Bin Jaoon Kahan” was first sung by Rafi. RD Burman gave Rafi’s recorded cassette/spool to Kishore da to imporove on it for a week. RD may not have malice, but the fact is that KK had an unfair advantage. I do not know if there is a third version too with Rafi singing sad number, but clearly the two most heard versions have KK doing better than Rafi’s song.

We have to give credit to KK’s singing abilities that he grabbed this opportunity with both hands and displaced person of Rafi’s calibre in 70-71 with Aradhna’s “Mere Sapnon ki Rani” and “Pyar Deewana Hota hai” and “Yeh shaam mastaani” from Kati Patang.

I am told that around that time Rafi had travelled to Mecca for Haj and had been under religious spell and even took easy on singing. This also helped KK to cement his place. With Rajesh Khanna also bringing an era to hindi cinema, KK did very well to compliment Rajesh.

It is a pity that KK does not have bhajans, Patriotic songs or difficult songs sung in classical tunes. Here Rafi is miles ahead of KK. Biggest assets of Rafi were his melody, silk smooth voice, high pitch and unusual ability to come to normal singing in the same breath after very high pitch. Above all he was and still is the most respected personality in Hindi cinema for his good deeds and clean image.

My salutes to the greatest singer.

  35. Anmol Singh says:

In the song “Tum Bhi Jahun Kahan” the word CHAAHAKE resonates at a constant frequency which is sung by Rafi. This is a Rafi patent quality where he vibrates the words in many of his songs.

The same song sung by KK pronounses CHAAHAKE straight, indeed compensates with Yoodling between the Sthai and Antara.
