True Voice – Mohd Rafi

The following article was brought to my notice when Sharad posted it on MAS. The article has been trimmed down a bit keeping afloat Rafi details. However, anyone interested can go visit the source at http://tfmpage.com/forum/4980.6302.04.57.19.html

I am Swaminatha Iyer and I am 78 years old. I hail from Tiruchi and I am a part of music associations in Tiruchi, M’as as well as in West Bengal and Maharashtra.

I think it is wrong to condemn music or artists on either side of Vindhyas. Our Indian music is one of the few which has not been cleaned off by the western music though there has always been a influence. It speaks a lot of the richness of our music. Sometime back director of MTV had said that MTV westernized the music wherever it went but in India , MTV had to be Indianized for it to be accepted. A lot of this credit goes to the Indian film music.

I have been fortunate to have close personal association with Rafi, Sirkali, TMS, Dr. BMK, Kishore, SPB & KJY, PS, Mannadey and the one and only Lata Mangeshkar.

Comparisons are bound to come, but almost every artist or I have met considers Lata to be beyond comparison. Her talents are beyond anyone’s reach. Even Sirkazi used to talk of her singing like a die-hard fan as do countless others.

Now coming to the Rafi-SPB discussion. It might be difficult to convince an South Indian to believe Rafi is the better and at the same time Rafi crowd will never believe any other male singer comes anywhere nearer. There is one more mobile crowd, which is well conversant with Hindi and some south Indian language. Majority of them tilt to either Rafi or Kishore.

During one of my stays in M’as I had stayed with SPB. While talking of true voices he said, I don’t feel like half a singer when listening to Rafi. True voice is not a tech term but many in circle use it. Perfect example would be lata, but to understand consider our own PS who within her range is superb. People who do not have such true voices can never do justice to original. They generally underplay many parts of the song or fake it with bass/superficial singing. True voices make people like Sirkazi, Nusrat Fateh Ali khan, Lata… Inimitable. However since Sirkazi and Nusrat did not have the filmy voices their “real” following is limited to their local arena.

In addition to the true voice if the singer has a very good voice then in “most” cases he/she can better songs of others. It is this combination which makes Rafi stand out among the other male singers. There are many here who seem to have mistaken notions on a good bass and also on high pitch.

Bryan Adams does not require a monster bass in “Summer of 69” to sound real manly. It is the punch which gives that feel and that is decided only by the comfort level in most ranges (that is by what your throat can support). This you CAN never disguise with bass. Since people have talked about lack of manly voice viz. a viz. Rafi it was necessary to bring this point out. I have had the fortune of listening to most singers in studio and some times without a mike, practicing with MD’s.When Lata or Rafi do, the level is so high that people hesitate to even hum. It felt silly to sing in their presence (and it feels silly when someone says his voice isn’t manly).

In RD’s tribute when SPB sang “Aaja Aaja mein hoon” or “Chaand mera dil” it sounded only sweet and lacked punch if you compare with Rafi’s original.

Yesu once told me God has been partial to Rafi. He said “god gift term anavasyamaa romba common aa ippo use aardu”.. but idu Rafi kee thaan 100% porundu”. This person could sing “as intricately as a lady without sounding thin”, “cover any mood”, “versatility odey perfect example Rafi”. Yesu said most important is the comfort level over ranges which makes you feel God has been partial to Rafi. (But Of course in Rafi’s early career (1950’s) the voice was relatively feeble).

To people exposed to Rafi’s talent, these or any amount of praise can only seem less. I just wish he was alive and you people could get a live chance to hear him. Probably you can get hold of the DD album for the Geet Gaata Chal series where the first four episodes were dedicated to Rafi. Rafi is on camera singing “O Duniya Ke Rakwaaley” and many other songs. If you see and hear the last part you will realize why SPB said “impossible”. I think particularly those people who have talked about scales w.r.t Rafi should see this album. Its a known fact in industry that Rafi ruled high pitch and there is no male singer better in switching notes so easily. There are artists who can go beyond but then they sound strained or they don’t have pleasant voices when they venture into those territories.

Many singers of today are his compulsive followers. But they end up inheriting only part of his quality. Md. Aziz ended up with a sad voice. Mahendra Kapoor with a thick nasal voice. Anwar with a nasal voice. Sonu Nigam with a feminine voice. Rafi neither had a soft voice nor a heavy (bass) voice he had a good voice. Importantly did not strain at high notes, and voice if at all only became better at higher notes. If you see him singing it will remind you of Janaki. However diff the song is or the note is he will be smiling and singing. It is unthinkable that he cannot sing something.

There seems to be lot of talk about “Shankara Bharanamo” song. SPB has sung many a great numbers and things being said about this song in this forum are rather amusing, particularly b’cos 3 out of 4 people who can be called as singers will be able sing it and at least one out of 10 will sing it with the same effect. There are lot of other songs of SPB where this great singer has played with songs in total control. You will find most south Indian singers who have had a good exposure say that it is beneficial to learn Hindustani as it gives better breath control and improves expression.

Rafi was not only able to glide over a song, the important thing was that he could express each word/sound when singing. It is one thing to hold your breath, start and reach a crescendo (high note), as like in “Shankara”, “Anbey (Yennai kaan villaye)” it is different ballgame if you have to do it from low notes or suddenly switch notes. With practice the former can be done, latter requires a special gift. Rafi had a natural ability to do the latter. In “Tum joh mil gaye ho” there is such a transition in the “karwaan mil gaya” part. I have never seen anyone do justice to most of his songs in my life time. In “parda hai parda” quawaali the similar part is “kar doon to, Akbar mera naam”. In fact most of his songs will have these specialty as it was his natural ability to sing freely in a wide range at the same time giving that extra expression.

Whereas SPB takes us to heavens with “Idu oru pon maali”,”Ilaya nila” “bisiladarenu”(kannada), when he sings Rafi’s song it lacks the punch or expression, though it has the bass. But at least most agree that SPB does some justice to original, whereas most others murder the original.

One trivial point I would like to add is that singing in Hindi is harder. There are more “JHA”,”CHA”,”HA”,”THA”, “KHA”,”JA”,”FA”. These take away the breath faster. The more expressive you are the more air you are using up. Just singing from Nabhi will not help, your throat also needs to do a lot, for singing in Hindi, Bengali etc. SPB makes you fall in love with his south Indian songs but same cannot be said about his Hindi songs. If you just glide through words having these sounds, you will never be expressive. Doing this as well as reaching high notes is not easy. Rafi had this gift and that’s why it is difficult to imagine anyone else in his shoes. Song “Chalkaaye jaam” has so much expression that it is unthinkable how anyone can sing it. When Rafi switches to a high note with “Mitwaa” in the song “Chaahunga mein tughey” you cannot replicate it with bass. Most others will sound as if they are shouting in such cases. That man’s throat had the ability to freely sing at such levels.

Versatility is not just the ability to sing in various styles, more important is how good you are singing in those styles. You have lot of Ghazal singers today but when Rafi sings a Ghazal you will sit up and take notice. You don’t have to be part of the Ghazal listeners crowd. This is one important aspect. Whatever style you sing you should be able to pull the common man to listen and not just a particular crowd. Pick “parda hai parda” or any qawalli and it will stand tall among other qawalli’s.

Variety is amazing :

songs of Guru Dutt’s Khagaz key phool or songs like abhi naa jao chod key, Aaja teri yaad aayi, Aaj kal mein dhal gaya, Aaj kal terey merey pyaar, Aasmaan sey aaya farishta, Dil ney pyaar kiya hai, Deewana mujh saa nahi, Din dhal jaaye, Duniya paagal hai, Jaane walon jara, Dil joh na kaha saka, Dil key jharokon mein, Dil kaa bhavar, Chalkey teri aakkhon sey, Kar chaley hum fida, khilona jaan kar tum, Woh jab yaad aay, Woh hain jara khafa, Vaadian mera daaman, Pathar key sanam, Chaand mera dil, Main zindagi kaa saath, Mainey poocha chaand sey, sun sun jaalima, Koi jab raah na paay, hum to chaley pardes, badan pey sitaarey, laal chadi maidaan, Tum jo mil gaye, O meri shaahey, Sau baar janam lengey, Tum mujhey yoon bhula, Tumney mujhey dekha, Terey merey sapney, Tumny pukaara hum chaley aay

Name a situation/mood and Rafi’s song will be there on the top.

    Hi friends,

I am a big fan of Mohd. Rafi. He had a truly heavenly voice. What I would like to know is if anyone of you can get me two songs sung by Rafi. The songs are from the movie “Choti Si Mulaqat”, composed by Shankar Jaikishen. The Songs are:
    1. Tujhe dekha tujhe chaha tujhe pooja maine (duet with Suman Kalyanpur)
    2. Aye Chaand ki Zebayi (solo by Rafi)

The 2nd song is a very rare song and all the romance and feeling has been rendered by Rafi in his heavenly, sonorous and mellifluous voice. I am very fond of rare songs and if any of you diehard Rafians can get the above songs and provide a link on this forum from which the songs can be downloaded in a format like MP3 format, I will be highly obliged.

    Regards
    Jay Sagar

I am not glad to see people comparing Rafi Sahab with k.k.
They are so different in style and voice Quality.
This is a Moh. Rafi site, and please just talk about Rafi Sahab only.
Rafi Sahab’s voice is of a very high quality. Many people in India are just discriminating him. Especially in the music industry and the media now. There is a Anti-Rafi lobby in India these days. But…..One thing is clear…
Whatever they day…Moh.Rafi. is the only singer with such a great voice Quality…I also respect the other singers like Mukesh, Manna Dey, Talat Mahmood..Hemant Kumar..and so on…

    dear KK fans,
Shahrukh wants to make a film on Kishore Kumar!
    http://www.yoodleeyoo.com/trivia/shahrukh-wants-to-make-a-film-on-kishore-kumar.html
Do u know how many actress will be in the film?

  9. Nair says:

    Dear Harvinder!

With my extremely limited understanding of music, please let me make a modest attempt to look at one among the three beautiful songs mentioned by you.

Shirdi Waale Sai Baba: Although a qwwali, it is composed in a rather mild way (less tonal acrobatics); may be that it is in praise of a Deity (Sai Baba) who is not a traditional qwwali Deity and also that it is a filmi version. The song starts directly with the alap by Rafi Sahab; the instruments just make attendance (Cf. Hum Kissi Se Kam Nahin). The alap is also very brief, just to highlight the raga (Kalyan? Please help me). The main song goes systematically, however reaches the crescendo at “do din ki Duniya, duniya hai gulshan”. At “Tu bichdon ko milaaye” there is gentle improvisation. A recording room version will be under the strict guidance of MDs and there will, quite naturally, be less room for improvisation by the singer. However, the most beautiful part of the song is a soft “gamaka” (tonal shake) at Aaya hai “teeere» »” dar pe.

  10. Nair says:

    Dear Unknow!

Comparisons, obviously, were there with Mukesh, Manna Dey, and Talat Mehmood apart from Kishore Kumar. However, the comparison variables were different. The intensity of those comparisons was also less relative to Kishore Kumar. Probably, that Mukesh, Manna Dey, and Talat were specialists in melancholic, classical, and gazals respectively. Among the trio, popularity wise Mukesh had the highest value. So Mukesh was compared with Rafi on the basis of popularity and, of course, adeptness in melancholic numbers; Manna Dey on classical and Talat on Gazals.

When Kishore Kumar made the entry, he had more features to be compared with Rafi Sahab than the other singers. Firstly, popularity – at its highest; secondly, proficiency in singing jovial, comic, and melancholic numbers; and thirdly, a fine style that was never heard before. Quite naturally, the intensity of comparisons will have a higher graph.

The finest part of the story is that there was no male singer to come with a complete package (like Rafi) and get compared with Rafi Sahab.

    Dear mohd Rafi fans,
all hear in this site they are only Mohd rafi fans as i think there is no one is KK fans because I am as Mohd Rafi fan I visit KK site more than who said that they are kk fans and write more than them in KK site.
Please Mohd rafi fans don’t answer to people who compare the only one Mohd Rafi with any singer,Do u know why they don’t want compare Mohd rafi with Manny Dey or Mukesh?

  12. Harvinder says:

    Dear Nair bhai,
Thanks for sharing your in depth study in music. It makes sense to a person like me, whose understanding of music is limited to good melody, clearity, flow and oscillation of singer’s voice.

How do you rate Rafi saheb’s following songs on technicality :
    1) Meri Awaaz Suno pyar ka saaz suno – NAUNIHAL
    2) Jab Jab Bahaar aayee – TAQDEER
    3) Shirdi waale sai baaba aaya hai tere dar pe – AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY.
    and many more.

I find these songs rendered by Rafi Saheb amazing.

  13. Rafi_fan says:

A very nice parody on the “Rafifan versus KKfan” issue………don’t know if this has already been posted here before………found this on several other sites…………enjoy!!

KKFan : It is obvious that KK was the best singer !
    Better than your Rafi !!
RAFIFan : (perplexed) Obvious ? but how ?

KKFan : Of course. He kicks ass. And mightyly.
RAFIFan : (still perplexed) But how does that say
    anything about singing abilities ?

KKFan : I mean he pours emotions in his songs.
RAFIFan : (slightly interested) Can you elaborate
    please ?

KKFan : Naturally. The way he laughs in between, his
famous yodeling, the way he could say “kukru kuku”
    etc.
RAFIFan : But what about singing. What you said above,
can be done in a better way by Johny Lever. What about
    SINGING ?

KKFan : (annoyed) Come now. Have you ever seen him
singing ? He really used to dance while recording his
    songs.
RAFIFan : But I prefer to HEAR somebody sing, rather
than SEE him singing. What about his singing abilities
    ?

KKFan : He was a genius. He could act, he could
dance, he could direct movies. He was ultimate. He had
    4 wives, you know !
RAFIFan : But my dear freind, let’s discuss SINGING
    please.

KKFan : You don’t understand anything about music.
Your Talat had a palindromic name.
    RAFIFan : (??) But I am a Rafi fan. I don’t care how
anybody spells a name. I would like to know why you
    think KK was better.

KKFan : Don’t dare you start a flame war ! Our
KKFanClub has a lot more members. You will be blasted
    off the net.
RAFIFan : (amused) But let’s just discuss. eg. How
good was KK while singing classical based songs ?

KKFan : Ah ! I knew you would come to this point. We
are well aware that KK didn’t have a formal training.
RAIFIFan : But is it Rafi’s fault ?

KKFan : (trying to think) No .. I mean .. Yes. No.
No. But he was good in every other aspect. And why
should everybody sing those Naushad songs ? KK was
more lively singer, he could put emotions into every
song. Remember that “kukru kuku” ?
RAFIFan : (exasperated) There is no hope. I give up.

KKFan : You see, you see. I knew I would win. You
Rafi fans have no point on which you can argue. Ha ha
    ha, KK the greatest !

  15. Nair says:

    Dear Harvinder!

You have a point. Yes, Rafi is the “comparison target” for virtually every singer – past and present. No need to open this concept more, for it is self-explanatory that Rafi is the ultimate standard of film music. Saigal, Manndey, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, even Lata Mangeshkar stood in the comparison debates with Rafi. Very seldom can one see Kishore Kumar compared with Mukesh, Mukesh with Mann Dey, Lata Mangeshkar with Kishore. Why? Simple; Rafi is the ultimate “comparison standard”. Otherwise none of the Kishore fans need to throw away their time in this site.

Now, let’s leave other singers apart and take Kishore Kumar. Kishore never entered the comparison list till 1970. This is for the reason that Kishore Kumar was not considered as a qualitatively (or in any other manner, lets call it “comparison variable”) equivalent candidate as other singers to have had a comparison with Rafi Sahab. This does not mean that all other singers were compared with Rafi on a qualitative basis, for e.g., Mukesh’s comparison variable was more “popularity” than “quality”. By 1970, Kishore Kumar rose to popularity and became eligible to be a comparate. In Kishore case, popularity as a comparison variable had a very high value than ever before in the case of any other singer. All the subsequent comparisons rested only on popularity variable, quality as a comparison variable never even came to light. Many a times Kishore Kumar stood high in the comparisons because of the popularity variable whereas the real quality factor stood on Rafi’s side. However, by 1977, Kishore Kumar began to lose the value of his popularity factor, which he regained to certain extent in the post-Rafi era.

My conclusion is that in terms of popularity Kishore Kumar is the best candidate ever to have a comparison with Rafi Sahab. On quality level, it can be only Lata Mangeshkar.

  16. Harvinder says:

This is for Messi’s, Ashwani’s and Unknowns,
I write this as a big fan of Rafi Saheb and equally great admirer of Kishore da’s versatilty and calibre.

This never ending comparison between the titans draws controversies also. Surprisingly some facts do surface from time to time, which appear so true but, not very convenient to accept.

Take for example, Ashwani citing 3 songs sung by Kishore and Rafi, but in diffrent modes. I can not help agreeing with Ashwani despite being a die hard Rafi fan. I will add another number by greatest MD Madan Mohan of Parwana “Toon na sharma, faila de”. This was a phase when Kishore da was at his very best and almost like a man possesed. He had just taken over # 1 slot amongst male singers (Like Dhoni outshining Sachin Tendulkar these days). Kishore da was oozing with confidence in this song and everything falling in place.

However, when we talk in broader perspective, one thing stands out in my mind. People compared Rafi with KL Saigal, Rafi with Manna Dey, Rafi with Mukesh, Rafi with Kishore Kumar between 1947 till date. With Kishore da only comparison is with Rafi saheb from 1970 till date. I am unable to figure this out. Could it be the longer innings or the range of songs that Rafi saheb sang ?

A request to both side fanatics : Please admire your favourite, but do not use silly language for the other great singers.

  18. Sagar says:

    DEAR KK FANS,

Just in above blog someone said the following :

” nway, if u want to compare Rafi with Kishore then pls. listen following songs:

    1. Tum bin Jaaou kahan
    2. Rote hue aate hai sab (rafi sang sad song, Kishore sang happy)
    3. Zindagi Ek safar (same as above) ”

LETS NOW CHECK OUT ABT THESE SONGS :

1.) TUM BIN JAAON KAHAN :
This song come 3 times in the movie 1st sung by KK , 2nd sung by
RAFI SAHAB and 3rd time sung by Rafi Sahab again. The 3rd song is a
rare piece and most of KK fans may not have listened to it.
As we all are aware that RDB recorded the happy version with RAFI
SAHAB first and then gave the recording to KK to visualize abt the
notes of the song.3 RD VERSION of this song is a complete sad
version which is a bit fast and also out of KK ‘s reach, so RDB
preferred RAFI SAHAB again, just imagine a person like RDB who
always preferred KK why did he went to RAFI SAHAB ????
Simple that song needed emotions and perfect high notes with proper
surs involved, there are some words used in 3rd version which comes
in ANTARA and MUKHADAS which I dont think KK wud have justified
it properly so RDB just kept KK for YODELLING TUM BIN …Version.

2.) ROTE HUYE AATE HAIN SAB :
This song is no matter a classic piece which KK has sung it in a power
mode. But imagine if this same song would have been in
RAFI SAHAB’S voice the current song would have been something
great than what KK had sung. In other words if KK can sing this easy
song so well then what level this song would have been to if
RAFI SAHAB had rendered his voice.
Talking about the sad version , if you see the last shot in movie where
Amitabh Bachchu is dieing and VINOD KHANNA is in a sad mood, at
that this song is played,so naturally the song was for VINOD and not
for BACHCHU , and also kindly think that it was complete out of reach
of KK’s reach to bring in the sad emotions in this version, so again
KALYAN BHAI AND ANAND BHAI preferred the MASTER.

    3.) ZINDAGI EK SAFAR :

May I please ask all KK fans that on what classical mode is this song
based and what is such a new thing APART from YODELLING in this
song ???? Apart from power voice of KK nothing is there and
remaining part where he could not catch the high notes he has
    yodelled.
Again talking abt the SAD VERSION then again, when it comes to
soul stirring voice and music we have to take a U-TURN to the
    MAESTRO.
    *************************************************************

Again someone said that KK sung ANCHAL KE TUJHE LEKE CHALU which is a classical based song ???? Sir please come forward and tell me what RAAG is it based on and what is the difficult task in that song which other singers cant bring up ???????

Manna De was much better than KK because he never rendered his voice for any MEDIOCRE songs ? PADOSAN songs then let me remind you MANNA DE was initially upset when KK used some improper words in the song , MANNA said if this is the case let the DEBATE go on with KK and then we will check who is GHODA and who is GADHA …I give complete credit to RAJINDER KRISHAN,RDB AND SUNIL DUTT to patch up , and it is also impossible to hear that KK apologized MANNA DE after that song….???

    *************************************************************

    Dear KK fans,

Now I am mentioning some RAFI SAHAB’S songs I want you to bring songs of KK where his voice has taken up the song to a high level.

1.) Zindagi bhar nahi bhulegi yeh barsaat ki raat

    2.) Badi Der Bhayi Nandalala

3.) Chaoonga Mein tujhe saanjh sawere

4.) Ilahi tu sun le humari dua

5.) Keh do ki koi yaha pyaar na karein

If KK fans havent heard any of the above songs , then they do need to reply others who have any voice based emotional classical and true indian songs by KK get it

    Regards

    Sagar

    Messi,

I agree with you. There is no singer like Mohd Rafi and Kishore kumar is a good Artiste both in terms of acting which I like more and singing next to Mohd Rafi.. Whoever fights here claiming that he is good- he is bad. I finally draw my inference here. INDIA HAS PRODUCED 9 GEMS and the greatest combi of them are MOHD RAFI-MUKESH-KISHORE KUMAR-MANNADEY. OTHERS LATA-ASHA-MAHENDRA KAPPOR-TALAT-K L SEHGAL. We can hear these Golden Greats in different occassions and moods to ultimate satisfaction. Music is for enjoying and these greats do enter our souls. We should stop comparing and to respect this site we should talk about Rafi Sahab who stands on the Top among all the singers.

    dear Messi,
Please please please visit KK site because there are no one to write on KK there,
I don’t know about Bengali films but I think Manny Dey should be at top not KK,
dear Messi it is easy to do everthing but the problem is who do u do that,If we speak about one man show I think that is Raj Kappor not KK,
not We Mohd Rafi fans said that KK can’t sing classics that was kk fans who said that KK was not trained,Offourse KK was busy in 60’s because he was thinking what to do be a singer or actor or ?!!!

  23. Messi says:

Please let me know how to write articles, I don’t see any link for that. Only reply link is
visible. I will try to collect things and post here. Kindly let me know.

There are many classic songs sung by Kishore. If somebody doesn’t accept this then he is a
hypocrite. No need to talk about the classics, just take this simple example. “Aa chalke tujhe
main le ke chalu”, this is so simple. Most of the singers can sing it. But it’s Kishore Kumar’s
lyrics, compostion, singing that make it an immortal one.

In early days, kishore didn’t get the first rated songs, because Rafi, Manna Dey and Mukesh
were at the peak of their career. But when he started getting the first rater songs, he made
them classics, he made them immortal. He became a great singer.
In 60s, he was a popular actor. He was such a busy actor that he faced time management
problem in singing and acting. At that, nobody knew Kishore as a singer. They knew more
as an actor. When he switched to singing, he showed his caliber.
No doubt, 60s is the time, when HFM got a new revolution. Rafi was one of them who
contributed a lot and then Kishore took his place and contributed with same dedication.
Very interesting is, people who praise Rafi & Kishore, who are big fans of Rafi & Kishore
seldom talk about the great MDs who actually created the music. Rafi or Kishore or
whoever are just parts of it.

Bengali is not my first language or mother tongue, but I have collected many songs.
Listen to them. There are many classic songs and some of them were composed by
Kishore Kumar. I was surprised to hear that those songs were composed by Kishore
Kumar himself. They are of equal genre that we talk about hindi golden numbers or
classics. I never listened to them before, because hindi is more popular so only
hindi songs of Rafi and Kishore are more popular.

Again, people seldom talk about Manna Dey. I think he was better than any other
singer in singing the classical ones. His genre was different. But Rafi took the top
position in singing the romantic ones. People seldom talk about Manna Dey.
They mentioned his name when they compare Kishore with Rafi, they never compared
Manna Dey with Rafi. Sach bahut karvaa hota hai

2 things are: There is no singer like Rafi and there is no artist like Kishore Kumar.
Whoever accepts one but not the other, is surely a hypocrite.

I don’t want compare Mohd Rafi with any one, that good of u that you said that Lata ji singed “Tum mujhe You bhoola na paaonge” not KK singed better than Mohd Rafi,Lata is great but when u compare her with Mohd rafi i don’t think so please ask P from LP or any one who know the music he or she will tell u,when Mohd Rafi and Lata ji they didn’t singed together the MD went to Mohd Rafi not to Lata ji,Why?????
Dear Aswani visit KK site and write some thing on KK there and try to compare Mohd Rafi with KK,This is Mohd Rafi site I don’t want compare Mohd Rafi to KK also KK was a good singer but no way to compare him with Mohd Rafo or Manny Dey or any othere male singer as a singer.

  26. kmurtyrafian says:

    Ashwani,

If you feel Kishore is great OK accepted. One cannot force you to accept the facts. But comparing him to Rafi in terms of popularity is not correct. You have given some classic songs as examples which are truely correct. But you see, whenever somebody raises some question, you have only countable songs of Kishore to say that he has sung these songs like classical (0) qawwali (1-2). Hear thesongs of Rafi Saab’s which are in total different tunes whereas Kishore Kumar can sing only two ways, Happy or crying.. For example Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana, You hear the happy song, because of the yoodelloo he won but you shud hear the sorrow song he has sung. My God one would get headache.. At the same time hear Rafi Saab singing for Shammi Kapoor vov what a great melancholy and melody.. It will touch heart. Take Bane chahe Dushman – Kishore has tried with difficulty to reach Rafi’s level and waves of singing..

I will affirmately confirm to you that QUALITY CD shops are selling Rafi songs in high numbers, Vividh Bharathi which largely reaches the India Geography and not limited to cities gives out more Rafi’s songs than Kishore or any other singer. For details, hear Radio daily…

Rafi Saab can sing any type of song and he has sung them too.

Kishore Kumar is a popular singer who has sung more songs in two types, happy (one can hear and enjoy) and sorrow.

Rafi Saab has sung Classical, fun, Comedy, Qawallis, Arabian type, Sorrow, Romantic, running numbers etc., etc., Name any type – His Highness has sung..

RAFI SAAB IS GOLD and FOREVER.

I wish you to continue enjoying Kishore Kumar and leave this site.. If you have an argument.. LETS CONTINUE…AND THERE IS NO END..

  28. ashwani says:

    My dear Friend asifmajeedk

You are sounding cheap here. Rafi is far behind in case of popularity. For evidence, You can listen to FM and other music channel.

Pls. go to any music stores, You will find Kishore’s collection are more and selling more. Again no comparison with Rafi.

Boss, You can regard Rafi, appreciate Rafi but don’t disregard Kishore.

As you can’t recall Kishore’s classic songs. Let me remind you few which could not sing by any other singer with same pain and energy.

    1. Teri Duniya se hoke majboor chala
    2. Duniya o Duniy Tera jawaab nahi
    3. Jaane kya soch kar nahi gujara.
    4. Dukhi Man mere

I am sure you have not listen these songs as you are deaf to Kishore’s songs. Pls. listen it.
I am sure you will not write the same blog if you are real music lover.

One more: “Tum mujhe You bhoola na paaonge” Lata sang better than Rafi.

Note: Rafi-Kishore saga site is closed because of few Rafians SAAGAR, bk1 etc.

    Pls. don’t mind it.

  29. asifmajeedk says:

Does someone know why Rafi-Kishore saga site is closed?

That being said, I want to ask Ashwani (Are you also AVI) and other blind Kishore fans, do they really believe that KK can ever sings songs that Rafi sang so beautifilly such as Oh Duniya Ke, Ehasann tere, Aap Ke haseen rukh pa, Dil ke Jharoke mein, Mere Mehboob, Madhuban main radhika? Why in survey after would Rafi rate higher than KK. As far as stations playing KK songs, that is the personal preferance of the person playing the songs, and does not respresent the popular sentiment. I was at a record store. KK CDs were discounted and selling at really cheap prices while Rafi’s CDs were being soild at higher prices. Why?To me it seems there is still a greater demand for Rafi’ songs than KK. I still cannot recall one KK song that can be considered a classic. KK songs have no lasting power, while Rafi’ songs are always remain forever ingrained in one’s memory as so aptly said in the song ” Tum Mujhey youn Bhula Napao Gay”

Dear Unknow1, everyone is entitied to their likes and dislikes. Its virtually impossible to splat our likes on others or the other way round. Behtar hai jaise Rafi Sahab aur Kishore Da ek doosre ko adar dekar bhaichara nibhate the, we do the same. Sagar would resort to cheap words which I will not let on this site. If he wishes to do privately, I don’t have any problem. If Kishoredians use bad and foul language please let me know, if I’ve overlooked it somehow.

Listening to Bagon Mein Bahaar Hai..

I think the Sagar is the right man to answer these people like Roger and Ashwani, they said that not because of Mohd rafi 50’s and 60’s music was hit yes i can agree with him but why 70’s music not good as 50’s or 60’s because the like them the said that RD is the best who made music and KK is the best singer?then wy they didn’t gave us same as by Mohd Rafi with SJ or with Madan Mohan or any name do u like

It is really sad that you don’t give creadit to MDs and Lyricist who decorated 50’s anad 60’s with their great creative work. Rafi was just part of it.
Mukesh and other singers along with KISHORE also gave fantastic songs.

Answer to ur query on Javed Akhtar.
I don’t see any issue if people are asking money from him. Javed is another show-off guy who promise something and forget it. It is very important for him to know all this so that he will not do the same next time.

How many awards are there on Rafi’s name? Where is Munna Aziz and Kumar Sanu? Are they Alive?

  39. unknow1 says:

    dear ashwani ,
I don’t need u to leave because u don’t know the fact when u accept the true,After 26 years they want to give award to Mohd Rafi and also the KK fans are waiting for money from Javed A!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!All music fans they know that Mohd Rafi is best Singer but we Mohd Rafi fans(mostly)beleave that there is no other singer after and before Mohd Rafi, look what mohd Aziz said about Mohd Rafi and look what Kummar Sanu said about KK,Mohd Aziz said that he is nothing if u compare him to Mohd Rafi,I hope u know what said kummar Sanu,
Dear Ashwani,Do u know the best music was in 1960’s when the most songs singed by Mohd Rafi and music is finished in 1980 after Mohd Rafi died?it is true it not said by me or Mohd rafi fans,Do u know more than SPB,Lata,Manny dey,SJ,Madan Mohan,LP,Naushand.o p nayar and many more in music world?

  42. Roger says:

    Happiness! Elusive, isn’t it?
    How often have you thought:
If only I had that car…
    then I would be satisfied!
If only I could find someone truely to love me…
    then I would be happy!
If only I wasn,t under so much financial stress…
    then I’d be content!
    If only…
    If only…

The news I have for you today is : All the “If only’s in the world – evn if they all came true- still could not guarantee your happiness!
As we all have discovered at one time or another, cars, houses, jewelry and other materiel gains don’t bring happiness for long. After the immediate rush of joy at recieving something we have longed for, we are hit with the unique problems that every gain brings.
I’ll never forget the young man who longed for a Ferreri. He dreamad about it. He imagined himself behind the wheel. He could smell the soft, supple leather. He could feel the power of the engine as it hugged the road.
Then it happened. He got the promotion he wantedand with the promotion came a good sized raise. At last he knew he could fulfill his fantasy.

Shining black, the Ferrari gleamed and glistened as he drove it away from the showroom floor. His drem had come true. He was ecstatic!
The car was magnificent to drive and the young man loved all the attention he received from the envious young men and lovely ladies. But the payments were steep. The entire raise and more was going into this car. The girls that the car attracted expected expensive gifts. And parking attendents expected fat tips.
Then it came time to have the Ferrari serviced. WOW! He had no idea thata mere lube job would cost so much. He managed to pay, although the high charges left him in the hole financially.

But it was worth it! He had AFerrari- His dream car!
The young man enjoyed washing and waxing the Ferrari, rubbing the wax and watching the sun glint off the mirrored body. But after a few months he began to notice little nicks in the paint and sctraches on the door.
He began to get tired of the attention and thedemands that the car and its new friends made on him. In fact, he wasbegining to wonder who the girls were going out with- HIM OR HIS CAR!
That car- Th young mans joy and pride, his source of happiness- as beggining to become a source of dissopointment and depression, as well as a burden. This let down was totally unexpected. He had thought he would be etenallpy hapy once he had that car. But ha wasn’t.
Future shock overtook- and shook him. Now he was haunted by the question: ” will I ever be happy? Will I ever be satisfied?”

  46. ashwani says:

    My dear friends,

I like Rafi very much but Kishore is near to my heart. It doesn’t mean i hate Rafi.

Rafi is/was great singer. Issue starts when Rafians start saying dirty words against Kishore. We never said anything wrong against Rafi, Yes we have rights to criticise Rafi’s work but not Rafi But Rafians doesn’t understand that.

    Dear Unknow1,
If you watch TV (all music channels like Zee Music (morning), V channel(morning)), they paly old songs in the morning betweenn 6 to 7am.
You can just find Kishore and only Kishore. Hardly you can hear Rafi. Even listen FM, if they play few old songs then Kishore would be there.

But it doesn’t question on Rafi’s proven records.
Again i must say, Both were/are great and uncomparable in their own style.

  47. unknow1 says:

i am as Mohd Rafi fans I don’t need to prove that Mohd Rafi is best singer because it is for me clear like Sun,Why u people like 2 compare Mohd Rafi with other singers?
really i don’t understant how some one can say that this singer is better than Mohd Rafi!!!!!!!
I am as Mohd Rafi fans I want know more about mohd Rafi not to compare him with others,I want to know that what people said about Mohd Rafi.

    Long Live Rafi Sahab

  48. Roger says:

Now who is this Messi person. Is it a new entry or an old wine in a new bottle. Atleast I guess Tim would want to change her title after all.
But whoever this Messi is , she/he has written the way I would like to. I completely agree with it( he/she).
And Ashwini, your statements are like hollow bloks. According you Kishore is greater than Lata! Come on Ashwini you are simply exposing your weakness of churning up some stronger points to defend Kishore. Ashwini, take it from me : THIS WILL NOT DO. YOU HAVE TO BE MORE PRECISE WITH YOUR IDEA DELIVERY. At present you seem to be simply beating round the bush.

  49. Roger says:

Rafi or Kishore; it is music which ultimately wins. I have said this a 100 times. Have you people got no other buisness other than prooving 2 dead man one above the other? I really wonder.

  50. admin says:

Sagar, this is an internet platform. Anyone can join and debate. If you cant follow a simplest of ethics, then get out from this website. Rightaway. If you don’t, that means its very clear that you are hear to fire more tussle between rafi and kishore fans in the name of your so called Rafi-fanizm. Do you think you will be welcome in Rafi’s home if you go there and belt stones at visitors, calling them low, filthy and showing your upbringing stature?

    Have some sense, some shame!
