  1. S k mishra says:

Rafi saheb discovered into himself throuh rythem n that is the sign of oneness of nature.

  2. Amar Bharadwaj says:

Rafi Sahab is to Playback Singing what Tendulkar is for Cricket.

He made the art of Playback Singing look so simple that mere mortals like us think how simple it is.

That’s the beauty of the great maestro.

I don’t think there can ever be another one like Rafi Sahab.

    God bless the Noble soul.

  3. Mohammed Arif says:

Mohammed rafi sahaab jaisa na koi tha or na hi aane wale samay m hoga

  4. Rafi sahab aapki awaz dil ko sakoon aur karaar bakshti hai.IRSHAD AHMAD SHAH says:

    Rafi is genious

  5. Santanu Bandyopadhyay says:

In the biography on Md Rafi, written by his dauhter-in-law, Yazmin Rafi, she gave a clear allusion that when Kishore kumarji was invited at Md Rafi’s London house in the mid 1970s ( when KK was commercially on top for 4-5 years, overtaking Md Rafi, for reasions which lurked out of singing quality), he ( Kishoreji) conceded and almost accepted that he considered Md Rafi to be a better singer than him. If anybody has doubt in this statement, can go back to the book I mentioned above. (2) Legend singer Mukeshji told his son Nitin Mukesh that if he really had to assiduously follow any singer for enriching his singing qualities, ‘ DONT FOLLOW ME FOLLOW GREAT MD RAFI SAHAB’. He called his son Nitin intimately, took him to the corner of the room where they were conversing about the development of Nitin’s singing quality, Mukesh made this gret advise to his own son. (3) Manna Dey mentioned umpteen no of times that ‘ Md Rafise bara koi ganewala, hisdusthanme aajtak janam nahin liya, this Mannada said in an interview to Sonu Nigam in SAREGAMA, He made the same comments to great Naushad sahab also. (4) Jesu Das, Talat Mahmood and Noorjahan said Md Rafi was far ahead of everybody, except of course the great Lata Mangeshkar (5) Sonu Nigam and mahendra kapoor think Md Rafi to be the god of moder singing (6) Suman kalyanpur thought Md Rafi’s divine voice was above all other male singers, only Asha Bhosle thought Kishore kumar to be better than the great Md Rafi, this might be perhaps she is the wife of RD Burman. All these are facts

  6. Santanu Bandyopadhyay says:

Lata Mageshkar said in Hindusthan Times, 2009, that Md Rafi was the top most singer amongst all of us, including, Asha, Mannada and Kishoreda, unka uper octave ka magic aur koi singer ka nahin tha. (2) I sang not only maximum nos of duet songs with him, but the pleasure I got while singing with him, was missing while singing with any other male singer. This she (Lataji) said 4 years before the controversy that errupted between her and Md Rafi’s song Saheed Rafi, about thet apology letter, but this is besides the point. The bare fact is to Lataji, Md Rafi was the top most playback singer of India. (3) If one listens to all great duet songs recorder by Md Rafi sahab and Ashaji, and if those are compared to all best duets sung together by Ashaji and Kishore kumar, the latter combination wuld always appear to be inferior if compared to Md Rafi and Asha duets, I am not mention here Md Rafi and Lata Mageshkar duets here atall, because they were ( most of them) absolutely divine.

  7. yasmin banu says:

    Dear friends,

This is my published ‘letters to the editor’ article in Khaleej Times

    Remembering a legend

(Yasmin Banu, Abu Dhabi) / 31 July 2013

It was during the holy month of Ramadan on 31st July 1980, one of the greatest voice that Indian film Industry produced breathed its last.

Today, after 33 years the voice is haunting us as we reminiscent Mohammed Rafi on his death anniversary. In a nation of billion plus people, music plays an integral part of our daily lives from the FMs to the multitude shops there is always music buzzing to our ears.

Not a day passes in our lives where Rafi voice is unheard amongst us. With the changing phases of music industry and discernment of the listeners yet the younger generation is spell bound by the voice of this great singer. He started his career in an era where composers and lyricists challenged each other’s work — whether it is composer Madan Mohan and lyricist Raja Mehdi Ali Khan or Shankar Jaikishan and Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailendra or Naushad and Shakeel Badayuni or SD Burman and Sahir Ludhianvi.

Rafi complimented their works through his unparalleled rendition befitting both the composers and lyricists. After listening to his works for years, it is obvious he competed himself as his voice modulation synchronised the legends of that time – whether it is Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar and Dev Anand.

Today, this singer is not remembered for his mellifluous voice but also as humble human being who contributed to the society through his charity and notable deeds. Rafi was affirmative when he sang ‘Tum Mujhe Bulha Na Paoge’ and millions of fans acknowledge it with humility.

The Original write up is as follows :

It was during the holy month of Ramadan on 31st July 1980, one of the greatest voice that Indian film Industry produced breathed its last

Today, after 33 years the voice is haunting us as we reminiscent Mohammed Rafi Sahab on his death anniversary. After listening to his works for years, it is obvious he competed himself as his voice modulation synchronized the legends of that time – whether it is Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar and Dev Anand. When we listen to the songs of Pyaasa, it is still astonishing how he was able to reflect the pathos of a disillusioned poet (Guru Dutt) in ‘Yeh Duniya agar Milbi Jaaye to Kiya Hain and oil massage street vendor (Johnny Lever) in ‘Sar Jo Tera chakaraiya with élan.

When the Indian government declared national holiday on his death it clearly reflected the love and respect he earned from his fans. Today, this singer is not remembered for his mellifluous voice but also as humble human being who contributed to the society through his charity and notable deeds.

Rafi Sahab was affirmative when he sang ‘Tum Mujhe Bulha Na Paoge’ and millions of fans acknowledge it with humility.

  8. Sarwat Baig says:

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s and Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s favourite singer: Mohammad Rafi Sahib.

  9. Sarwat Baig says:

Shammi Sahiba, you are right age is not an excuse especially once you have entered adulthood. But they say that you become more set in your ways with age. Good progresses to best and bad progresses to worst.

  10. General Perwez Musharraf’s favourite singer:Mohammed Rafi Saheb.
His favourite song on his lips when thrown-out of office”chal udjare panchi ke ab ye desh hua begaana” from old film Bhabhi, music by the late Chritraguptaji.
    Pravin B Dave

  11. Santosh Sukhrani says:

For Vijay Bavdekar : Why do you have any doubts about Rafi Saab having sung 26,000 songs. When Mahendra Kapoor is supposed to have sung 25,000 songs and a relative newcomer like Udit Narayan lays claim to 20,000 songs, how can you put Rafi’s count at only 4,500. I personally have a list 5000+ songs by Rafi and these are only Hindi film songs. Add to that the film songs he sang for non-hindi films, non-filmi songs like bhajans, ghazals, qawalis in more than 18 languages. He also sang hundreds of Islamic devotional songs. And to end all arguments, I personally heard a live interview with Rafi Saab just a year or two before his death when a fan asked him about the number of songs he had sung. And in his own voice, I heard him say “aaj tak pachees-chhabees hazar to ho chuke hain”. Now can you ever imagine the pious Rafi Saab – who most people acknowledge as next to God – would not tell the truth?

  12. shammi says:

Lata knowing that Mohd Rafi Sahab was a great respected man with no bad habits obviously can’t find anything bad to say about Mohd Rafi sahab and that’s why she takes comfort instead of praising Kishore Kumar where ever possible.
It obviously make her and her sister feel better, anyway I don’t think her age can be used to excuse her behaviour. Any respect I had for her has long gone and I still don’t think it’s too late for her to make amends because she has created a lot of hostility for herself by conducting herself in the manner she has.

  13. Sarwat Baig says:

This is what Lata Sahiba had to say on of the shows paying tribute to Rafi Sahib (before her infamous “apology” statement), “Rafi Sahib had no bad habits such as paan, cigarette or alcohol. He was fond of eating”.
Abhijeet Sahib said that once he was walking up the stairs to the recording studio when he saw Rafi Sahib descending. To his surprise Rafi Sahib greeted him first. That’s when he realized that the “bhagwan” of music had greeted him. He was amazed at his humility.
When he would go out with his family he would have the ladies of his families travel in a separate car so that the paparazzi wouldn’t mistake them for female friends. That was our Rafi Sahib.

  14. Wah Sanjeev ji apne rafi saab ke kitne anzan pahluon se hum sab ko avgat kara diya. rafi saab the hi aiyse. rafi saab vastav me koi farista the kyonki ek acchhe insaan me bhi koi na koi kami hoti hai lekin rafi saab ek dam pak saaf the.
Suron ke to wo betaaz badshah the. Yet baat hindustan ke bade bade sartaj gaayak gaayikaon ne dil se maani hai. rafi saab aap hamesha hamare dilon par raj karenge. Tahe jahan tak hum aap ko nahi bhula payenge. We love you rafi saab.

  15. shammi says:

Thank you Sanjeevji for giving us Mohd Rafi fans a little more insight into the great man by sharing these rare facts. What a lovely and great human being he was apart from being the best singer the world is ever likely to see.

It’s a real shame that big famous personalities of today can’t conduct their lives with a bit more dignity and be good role models to their fans.

May his memory be kept alive for many more decades to come and I hope the 33rd anniversary of his death will be remembered in a big way so younger generations can appreciate how songs should really be sung instead of the rubbish we are continuously bombarded with today. Unfortunately with dirty politics playing a big part with what is shown on the television/satellite stations, radios and printed in newspapers and magazines I should imagine there isn’t much chance of that. However, I shall still hope and pray that common sense prevails.

  16. Binu Nair says:

At the 1990 tribute to Rafi Saaheb tribute in Royal Albert Hall , London – Lata lighted the inaugural lamp. And, Asha Bhosle – lighted the lamp at Birmingham show.

When Rafi Saahebs songs were being played Lata Mangeshkar was in full admiration looking up – and probably thanking the Gods.

    From Rafi Saahebs family members.

  25. Ranjith Abeysinghe says:

I presume that this site is viewed by so many people all over the world ( I am from Sri Lanka) who have no knowledge of the Hindi Language. For the benefit of Rafi Sahab’s fans (like me) I would like to respectfully request the writers to have English Translations wherever possible.

  26. Lt Col Javed Sayyed(Veteran) says:

A very heart touching article. I have heard Mahendar Kapoor Sahib speaking with gratitude on behalf of himself and his family while Abhijeet Sahib speaks with such reverence on T.V. on Mohd Rafi Sahib’s birthdays and death anniversaries. There must be hundreds of lucky people out there who must have something to share with about this wonder known as Mohd Rafi. Thank you, Sir, for taking the pains although I regret not being able to read the bits in Hindi. God bless you.

It was an emtional pleasure to read these rare stated facts about our beloved Rafi sahab. Amazing its coming to 33yrs after his passing and we are still coming to know about new facts about Rafi sahab as well as discovering unheard songs from him. To this day I still ask why did God have to take this blessed singing angel from us. Rafi sahab will remain the number one singer forever as a blessed singer and a great humble human being like him will never pass our present or the future ever again. I only wished I could have met him and seen him sing live.
