Mohammed Rafi with legacy of composer Roshan

Krissh-3 released on 1st November, 2013 is declared blockbuster for record breaking collection of more than 100 crores in the Indian Box Office in 10 days which crossed now 300 crores worldwide. I was very fortunate to see the movie on demand from my kids on 3rd November, 2013 in a city multiplex. Till date it is the paramount Indian special effect, science fiction and superhero movie like Superman, Batman, and Spiderman of Hollywood. A 60 plus director Rakesh Roshan made a break-through with this film. The film will be definitely nominated for Filmfare Awards for categories like Best Film, Best Director, Best Music Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Villain.

In the Hindi Film Industry, very few families have able to carry on the legacy. For instance, Kapoor Family ( Pritvi Raj Kapoor – Raj Kapoor – Rishi Kapoor – Ranbir Kapoor ), Mukherjee Family ( Shashadhar Mukherjee –  Deb Mukherjee –  Ayan Mukherjee ),    Roshan Family   ( Roshan – Rakesh Roshan – Hritik Roshan ).

Mohammed Rafi is the only singer in the Hindi Film Industry who playback for three generations of Kapoors ( Pritvi Raj Kapoor – Raj Kapoor – Rishi Kapoor ). On 46th anniversary of Roshan Sahab and in the aeon of Krissh-3, I would like to converse an alliance of beloved Rafi Sahab with Roshan legacy.

Roshanlal Nagrath ( 14 July 1917 – 16 November 1967)

He was popularly known by his first name Roshan as a music director in Hindi Cinema for his soft romantic, emotional and heart touching music in 1950s and 1960s. He was born on 14th July, 1917 in Gujranwala, Punjab, presently in Pakistan who had attended music lessons at Bhatkhande College of Music in Lucknow at young age. In 1948, he came to Mumbai with a dream to become a composer in Hindi Cinema and worked as assistant to then composer Khawaja Khurshid Anwar in film SINGAAR (1949). He became an independent composer after meeting with producer-director Kidar Sharma with his film NEKI AUR BADI (1949) which was a flop. But he becomes known as a composer with Kidar Sharma’s BAAWRE NAIN (1950) staring Raj Kapoor and Geeta Bali in lead. The film was a musical hit having nine songs sung by Rajkumari, Shamshad Begum, Mukesh, Geeta Dutt, Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhosle. The lyrics of the songs penned by director Kidar Sharma himself and Rafi Sahab sung a duet, “Mohabbat Ke Maaron Ka Haal” with Asha Bhosle in the film. Though Rafi Sahab was associated with composer Roshan from his first hit, however, in 1950s Roshan Sahab mostly worked with male singers like Mukesh and Talat Mahmood.

Barsaat Ki Raat and Tajmahal

1960s was became golden age for composer Roshan and his association with Mohammed Rafi in films like BARSAAT KI RAAT (1960), AARTI (1962), TAJ MAHAL (1963), CHITRALEKHA (1964), BHEEGI RAAT (1965), BAHU BEGUM (1967), ANOKHEE RAAT (1968) created some classic and everlasting songs in Hindi Film Music. The prime Rafi solos from the above films like   “Zindagi Bhar Nahin Bhoolegi Woh Barsaat Ki Raat”, “Ab Kya Misaal Doon, Main Tuhmare Shabaab Ki”, “Jo Baat Tujh Mein Hai Teri Tasveer Mein Nahin”, “Maan Re Tu Kahe Na Dheer Dhare”, “Dil Jo Na Kah Saka, Wohi Raaz-e-Dil Kehene Ki Raat Ayee”, “Hum Intezzar Karenge Tera Qayamat Tak Khuda Kare Ke Qayamat Ho Aur Tu Aaye”, “Mile Na Phool Tu Kaanton Se Dosti Kar Lee” are still creating eternal magic. The musical magic of these songs not yet dried out after 50 years from its creation in the emotive lyrics by Sahir Ludhiyanvi, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Kaifi Aazmi. The music of Anokhee Raat was jointly composed by Roshan and Salil Chodhury.

Roshan Sahab won Filmfare Best Music Director Award for TAJ MAHAL. His last notable film as a composer was Asit Sen’s MAMTA (1966) staring Ashok Kumar, Suchitra Sen, Dharmendra which was a remake of National Award winning Bengali film UTTAR FALGUNI (1963). The music of the film became very popular with great lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri and songs were sung by Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd. Rafi and Asha Bhosle.  Rafi Sahab sung a duet with Asha Bhosle, “In Baharon Mein Akele Na Phiro, Raah Mein Kaalee Ghataa Rok Naa Le” in the film which was considered one of the best Raf-Asha romantic duet. It was also a popular initial Rafi gem for he-man Dharmendra also followed by a Tanga solo, “Kaajal Waale Nain Milaa Ke Kar Dala Bechain Kisi Matawali Ne, Are Re Re Loot Liyaa Jhaanjharwali Ne ” from DEVER (1966) from same composer-singer combination for the actor.

Chitralekha and Mamta

Roshan Sahab had known for giving break to new lyricists like Indeevar and Anand Bakshi who became later prominent lyricists of Hindi Film Music. He worked with actor Raj Kapoor in three films, BAAWRE NAIN (1950), ANHONEE (1952) and DIL HI TO HAI (1963). Though Roshan Sahab was not much fortunate to work with big banners and other big stars like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor. But will be always remembered for his creation of best romantic Rafi gems picturised on Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar, Dharmendra and Sanjeev Kumar. In addition to Melody in Hindi Film Music, he will also be remembered for his extraordinary creation of hit Qawwalis like, “Na Tu Karwaan Ki Talaash Hai”, “Nigahen Milane Ko Jee Chahta Hai”, “Parda Uthaye Salaam Ho Jaye” and “Na Khanjar Uthega Na Talwar Tumse, Yeh Baazoo Mere Aazmaye Hue Hain”

Devar and Anokhi Raat

Roshan Sahab had been suffering from heart trouble for several years and expired at the early age of 50 on 16th November, 1967. After his death his sons adopted his first name Roshan as a surname.

Rakesh Roshan Lal Nagrath (6th September 1949)

At the age of 16, he started his career as an assistant director to Producer-Director Harnam Singh Rawail in SUNGHURSH (1968) starring Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Sanjeev Kumar and Balraj Sahni. Then he assisted Producer-Director Mohan Kumar in ANJAANA (1969) and AAP AYE BAHAAR AYEE (1971), both starring Rajendra Kumar. There was a common between director Mohan Kumar & actor Rajendra Kumar, both born in SIALKOT who had done five films together and they facilitated Rakesh in his initial stage of career. In considering his honesty, Mohan Kumar recommended his name for relationship to his co-brother, thus Rakesh became son-in-law of Producer-Director J. Om Prakash. He also signed his first two films as an actor on reference from Rajendra Kumar. Though he signed first film MAN MANDIR, but debuted as an actor in GHAR GHAR KI KAHANI (1970) directed by T. Prakash Rao starring Balraj Sahani, Nirupa Roy and Om Prakash in lead role. His second film SEEMA (1971), a love triangle between Rakesh Roshan, Kabir Bedi and Simi Grewal which is best known for lilting music by Shanker-Jaikishan with a prominent Mohammed Rafi duet with Sharda “Jab Bhi Yeh Dil Udaas Hota Hai, Jaane Koun Aas Pass Hota Hai” penned by Gulzar.

EK KUNWARI EK KUNWARA

Rafi Sahab first sung for Rakesh Roshan a duet with Asha Bhosle, “Chal Diye Tum Kahan, Rukiye Meherban, Mere Yara Ho Dildara, Zamane Ke Baad Mile Ho” in EK KUNWARI  EK KUNWARA (1973). The song was well composed by Kalyanji Anandji in Arabian flavour which was too well picturised on Rakesh Roshan and Leena Chandavarkar. But it was Kishore Kumar’s peak era and his solo for Rakesh Roshon, “Agar Dil Hamara Sheeshe Ke Badle Patthar Ka Hota” became more popular. By the way, Kishore Kumar became more popular singer for Rakesh Roshan in later stage. Though the film was well directed by Prakash Mehra having a nice story and drama, but it did not able to ring bell at box office.

In 1978 film INKAR, Rafi Sahab again became voice of Rakesh Roshan in a beautiful party song, “Dil Ki Kali Yun Hi Sada Khilti Rahen Hasti Rahen Bagiya Tuhmari Mehekti Rahen” composed by Rajesh Roshan. This song of legacy had two versions, Happy & Sad and both the versions were sung by Rafi Sahab. The film was directed by Raj N. Sippy starring Vinod Khanna, Vidya Sinha, Amjad Khan, Shreeram Lagoo in which Rakesh Roshan had a special appearance. In IKRAAR (1979), Bappi Lahari composed an energetic romantic song, “Saathi Re Gham Nahin Karna Jo Bhi Ho Aahe Nahin Bharna” sung by Mohd. Rafi and Savita Suman. It was picturised on Rakesh Roshan and Rameshwari in vital places of Mumbai.

AapKeDeewane

In 1979, Rakesh Roshan registered his own banner FILM KRAFT and became off the record producer with AAP KE DEEWANE though official producer was Vimal Kumar. The film was directed by Surendra Mohan starring Rakesh Roshan, Rishi Kappor, Tina Munim, Ranjeet, Ashok Kumar and Pran where Jeetendra had a guest appearance. It has done very good business in the box office due to unmarked and hunting music by Rajesh Roshan in the lyrics of Anand Bakshi. The film had six songs and Mohammed Rafi sung for three heroes in the film: Jeetendra, Rakesh Roshan and Rishi Kapoor.

SL No. Song Singers Actor for whom Mohammed Rafi sings
1 Hum To Aap Ke Deewane Hain Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar Jeetendra
2 Tera Jalwa Tauba Hai Tera Jalwa Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar Rakesh Roshan
3 Tumko Khush Dekh Kar Main Bahut Khush Huwa Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar Rakesh Roshan
4 Mere Dil Mein Jo Hota Hai Mohd. Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar Rakesh Roshan
5 Ram Kare Allah Kare Mohd. Rafi, Amit Kumar, Benny, Lata Mangeshkar Rishi Kapoor
6 Apni Khushiyan Tujhko De Doon Mohd. Rafi, Amit Kumar Rishi Kapoor

The title song of the film, “Hum To Aap Ke Deewane Hain, Bada Mastane Hain” sung by Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar together was became main attraction of the film. Audiences used to visit theatres for a second time to hear three singers together and to see performance of three actors together on the stage. In the song, Rafi Sahab sings for Jeetendra, Kishore Kumar sings for Rishi Kapoor and Amit Kumar sings for Rakesh Roshan. Rafi Sahab last sung for Rakesh Roshan in film UNEES BEES (1980) under composer Rajesh Roshan. The songs were two duets “Meet Mere Man Ke Mera Ye Wada Hai” with Sulakshana Pandit and “Narazgi Ye Aapki Mujhe Jine Nahi Degi” with Suman Kalyanpur picturised on Rakesh Roshan and Ranjeeta.

Rakesh Roshan acted in more than 80 films from GHAR GHAR KI KAHANI (1970) to BAHURANI (1989) and then fully concentrated in production and direction. He worked opposite all top actresses in 1970-80s, like Hema Malini (Paraya Dhan), Rakhee (Aankhon Aankhon Mein), Rekha (Aakraman, Khubsoorat), Reena Roy (Madhosh, Zakhmee ), Rat Agnihotri (Shubh Kaamna), Anita Raj (Zulm Ka Badla, Ek Aur Sikander), Jaya Parda (Kaamchor), Sridevi (Bhagwaan Dada). But his maximum films were heroine oriented or multi-starrers, so he did not get appropriate credence. He also shared screen spaces with all stars in 1970-80s like Dev Anand (Bullet), Vakil Babu (Raj Kapoor), Rajendra Kumar (Aahuti ), Sunil Dutt (Zakhmee ), Uttam Kumar (Anand Ashram), Sanjay Khan (Trimurti), Shashi Kapoor (Aahuti, Neeyat ), Sanjeev Kumar (Akraman, Deveta, Haathkadi), Dharmendra ( Teesri Aankh), Jeetendra (Dil Aur Deewar,
Khandaan, Priyatama), Rajesh Khanna (Chalta Purza, Dhanwan, Aakhir Kyon), Rishi Kapoor (Jhootha Kahin Ka, Aap Ke Deewane), Mithun Chakraborty (Unees Bess, Jaag Utta Insaan, Ek Aur Sikander), Rajnikant (Jeet Hamari, Mahaguru, Bhagwaan Dada).

KhudGarz

In my opinion, as a solo hero Rakesh Roshan’s best social film was AANGAN KI KALI (1979) with director Harsh Koli based on adoption and comic romantic drama films were KHATTA MEETHA (1978) and HAMARI BAHU ALKA (1982) with director Basu Chaterjee where he was best paired opposite Bindia Goswami. Rakesh Roshan became Producer with KAAMCHOR (1982) and Director with KHUDGARZ (1987).

Rakesh Roshan also directed three films: Kala Bazar (1989), Khel (1992) and Karobar (2000) for other producers. All his films name started with K and music penned by his younger brother Rajesh Roshan. He has a obsession for “K” like his two mentors J. Om Prakash ( Aas Ka Panchi 1961 to Afsana Dilwalon Ka 2001 ) and Mohan Kumar ( Aap Ki Parchhaiyan 1964 to Amba 1990) had for “A”. As a filmmaker, he is very fortunate having a music director brother and actor son at home.

Rajesh Roshan Lal Nagrath (24th May 1955)

Rajesh Roshan started his career as a music director with KUNWARA BAAP (1974) directed by Mehmmod and got limelight with JULIE (1975) for which he won Filmfare Best Music Director Award followed by KAHO NA PYAAR HAIN (2000). He was also nominated for Filmfare Best Music Director Award for several times: SWAMI (1977), DES PARDES (1979), MR. NATWARLAL (1979), KAALA PATTHAR (1980), KHOON BHARI MAANG (1989), KARAN ARJUN (1995), PAPA KEHETE HAI (1996) and KOI MIL GAYA (2004).

Like his father Roshan, Rajesh Roshan is best known for composing soft, soulful and melodious songs for Hindi films in 1970s and 1980s. He had a successful association with Mohammed Rafi from KUNWARA BAAP (1974) to YAARANA (1981). He used voice of Rafi Sahab to playback for different actors like Dev Anand (Man Pasand), Bharat Bhushan (Unees Bees), Sunil Dutt (Yaadon Ki Zanjeer), Mehmood (Ginny Aur Johnny), Shashi Kapoor (Aahuti, Kaala Patthar, Neeyat, Swayamvar), Amitabh Bachchan (Mr. Natwarlal), Jeetendra ( Aap Ke Deewane, Jay Vijay ),  Rishi Kapoor  ( Duniya Meri Jeb Mein,  Aap Ke Deewane), Rakesh Roshan ( Inkar, Aap Ke Deewane, Unees Bees) and Mithun Chakraborty (Unees Bees).

Rajesh Roshan’s first song with Mohammed Rafi from KUNWARA BAAP, “Saj Rahi Gali Meri Maa” a duet with Mehmood became very popular among Hijras. Roshan made Rafi Sahab to sing for Amjad Khan in YAARANA (1981), where Amjad played his first positive role with Amitabh Bachchan. Rafi’s expressive solo, “Are Re Aisha Tarana Jhoom Ke Gaon, Sang Sang Duniya Jhoome” made Amjad’s positive character immortal. He composed Rafi’s last song for Mehmood, Bharat Bhushan, Dev Anand and Sunil Dutt. Rafi’s last song for Mehmood was a duet with Asha Bhosle, “Kahoon Kiya Tumse Apni Dastan” from GINNY AUR JOHNNY (1976) picturised on Mehmood and Helen. Rafi’s last song for Bharat Bhushan was a multi-singer bhajan, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram” by Mohd. Rafi, Anuradha Paurdwal, Nitin Mukesh in film UNEES BEES (1980) and the film started with this song. Rafi Sahab sung his last solo, “Pal Do Pal Ki” for Dev Anand in Basu Chaterjee’s MAN PASAND (1980). Rafi Sahab sung his last song for Sunil Dutt a duet with Asha Bhosle, “O Saperan Chal Chaliye Ni Sherowali Maa Ki Darsan Ko” in YAADON KI ZANJEER (1984).

As a composer, Rajesh Roshan worked with big stars like Dev Anand (Des Pardes, Man Pasand, Lootmaar), Rajesh Khanna (Janta Hawaldaar, Nishaan, Babu, Aakhir Kyon), Amitabh Bachchan (Mr. Natwarlal, Kaala Patthar, Do Aur Do Paanch, Yaarana, Khud-Daar, Insaniyat). He is the first composer who made Amitabh Bachchan sing for himself in Mr. Natwarlal in the song, “Mere Paas Aao, Mere Doston Ek Kisa Sunoo” and his break-through music in Yarana also made Amitabh a dancing star. He had given break to singer Udit Narayan in film UNEES BEES (1980) in the multi-singer song, “Mil Gaya Mil Gaya” by Mohd. Rafi, Udit Narayan, Usha Mangeshkar picturised on Mithun Chakraborty, Kedar Khan and Yogita Bali.

In early 1990s, his fellow composers like Laxmikant-Pyarelal, R.D. Burman and Bappi Lahri discoloured from the work and stopped composing music for Hindi Films. But Rajesh Roshan continued composing music for Hindi Films and made his high presents through films like Jurm (1990), Karan Arjun and Sabse Bada Khiladi (1995), Papa Kahte Hain (1996), Koyla (1997), Daag: The Fire (1999). His compositions in Kaho Na Pyar Hai got huge popularity and from then he stopped composing music for outside banners. His songs from Krrish-3, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram” by Neeraj Shridhar, Monali Thakur & Bob and “Dil Tu Hi Bataa” by Zubeen Garg & Alisha Chinay became very popular.

Hrithik Roshan Lal Nagrath (10th January 1974)

At the age 6-7, Hrithik Roshan made some small un-credited film appearances in AAP KE DEWANEE (1979), AASHA (1980) and AAS PAAS (1981) in songs sung by Mohammed Rafi. He was first seen in Aap Ke Dewanee riding a tricycle on seashore in the song “Ram Kare Allah Kare” sung by Mohd. Rafi, Amit Kumar, Benny & Lata Mangeshkar. There was a flashback in the song where two childhood friends playing in the seaside and Hrithik played younger version of character played by his father Rakesh Roshan. In Aasha, he was seen danced impulsively in the Mohammed Rafi song, “Jane Ham Sadak Ke Logon Se, Mahalonwale Kyun Jalte Hai” picturised on Jeetendra. Hrithik’s grandfather J.Om. Prakash later recalled the episode as, “The song was to shot on Jeetendra, Hrithik was on the sets, liked music very much and started dancing. I had asked my cameraperson and crew to be ready. I asked Hrithik if he liked the song, and he said, “Yes Deda, it is lovely music”. I replayed the music and he started dancing, and we shot it without his knowledge. When the music got over, the entire studio highly praised excitingly. After Jeetendra’s shot was over, he came to me and remarked, “For God’s sake don’t shoot a single more shot in this film with this boy, otherwise the audience will hoot my performance”. Aasha was a big musical hit with songs sung by Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar composed by Laxmikat-Pyarelal in the lyrics of Anand Bakshi. Again Hrithik was seen in his grandfather’s Aas Paas in the song, “Shehar Main Charchi Hai” by Rafi-Lata. In this film, he got his costume and close-up shot, as he passes a love letter from Dharmendra to Hema Malini during the song. The film begins with a dedication to late Mohammed Rafi, declaring that his last song, “Tu Kahin Aas Paas Hai Dost” recorded by Laxmikant-Pyarelal for this film.

Hrithit’s made his only significant childhood performance on emergency at the age of 12 in film BHAGWAN DADA (1986) produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by J. Om Prakash. The boy originally cast to play the role of Govinda became seriously ill when shooting had to start and in last minute grandfather selected Hrithik. He played the role of adopted son of Rajnikant, who danced with Sridevi and fight with Danny Denzongpa. Then Hrithik completed his study and after assisting his father for six years from Khel (1992) to Koyla (1997), he made his film debut as a leading hero in KAHO NAA PYAAR HAI in 2000 for which he won Filmfare Awards for Best Actor and Best Male Debut. He played lead roles in Fiza & Mission Kashmir (2000) and supporting role in multi-starrer blockbuster Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Gham (2001). Then there were some of his overlooked performances from 2002 to 2003 and again he made break through performances in Koi Mil Gaya (2003) and in Krrish (2006). He received Filmfare Best Actor Award for Dhoom 2 and Jodhaa Akbar. He received critical applause for his work in Guzaarish (2010) and nonstop commercial success with Zindegi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Agneepath (2012) and Krrish 3 (2013) established him a leading fashionable actor of Indian Cinema.

Krrish Series

Mohammed Rafi songs and other pivotal songs with Roshans and its legacy are to be preserved in best way in audio or video format perpetually in association with Saregama or Shemaroo. In India, preservation of culture, music and inheritance is very pitiable. In my personal opinion, Rakesh Roshan, Rajesh Roshan and Hrithik Roshan should take some personal interest in this regard and they can set aside a very small portion of Krrish 3 earnings for this job as legacy welfare.

Any Roshan / Rafi list will be incomplete without ” nai umar kin nai fasal”
For me “carvan guzar gaaya” is one of Rafi’s epic rendition & will always remain so. “Aaj ki raat badi shokh’ from the same movie is an other memorable number.

“Tum ek baar mohabbat ka imtihan to lo” from Babar is one more unforgettable gem from this combination.

Great article, I have always found Roshanlals music to be different and unique to the extent where it’s different to the other music directors of his time. I simply love all the songs sung by the great Mohd Rafi in the films ‘Taaj Mahal’ ,’Bahu Begum’ and ‘Barsaat ki raat’. These songs are just as enjoyable today as they were decades ago and will remain classic and evergreen.

Fantastic idea, about creating the Rafi- Roshan collections and the requested contribution from the Roshan family.

Overall a very well researched and informative article, tremendous insight.

I am very much pleased to hear the songs of Rafi Saab
music given by Roshan Saab and Madan Mohan Saab.It
is because I feel so comfort to hear their songs sung by
    Rafi Saab.

In one of my earlier comments I have mentioned that it
will be a milestone in the history of Indian Cinema if a
Producer include the Rafi Saab’s song “Dil ki kalee yu
hi sadaa” for Ranbir Kapoor so as to enable him to be
the “FOURTH GENERATION” to get the play back of
Rafi Saab which will also be a World Record.

An excellent article. I read an article from a magazine regarding selection of top 20 Hindi songs of Bollywood. For this purpose a jury comprising number of well known personnel from film industry, journalist, famous writers etc. was formed. Out of 20 songs they selected, the top 1 song was ” Maan Re Tu Kahe Na Dheer Dhare” sung by Mohd. Rafi Sahab and composed by Roshanji. From this revelation, it was already then established that Rafi Sahab is the great and most favorite singer of our country and accordingly, we, the fans conferred him the honor BHARAT RATNA. Now we expect this honor from our Govt.

    best regards to all Rafians.

  15. Gopal Bhai says:

Excellent experience. Mohd Rafi & Roshan sahab conjured some really mellifluous gems. But sir you forgot to mention a movie which had some Outstanding songs for the best singer actor Duo-Mohd Rafi -Shammi kapoor. It was Vallah kya baat hai. Songs like khanke to khanke Kyo khanke, and ek to surat pyari aur upar se ye naaz were awesome romantic duets and gham e hasti se bas begaana hota khudaya kaash main deewana hota. Need I say anything more about this. Ah…….. Nostalgia.

  16. u.k.achan says:

I always wondered who gave music for “Kaajal waale” which is a racy superb Rafi Saab rendition.
Taaj Mahal songs have the real regal touch.
Zindagi Bhar nahi boolegi woh barsat ki raat is sensual as ever after so many decades with no parallel.
    Long live Rafi saab.
