Mohammed Rafi ko Bharat Ratn Kyon Nahin?

मोहम्मद रफ़ी, एक ऐसा नाम जिसके ज़िक्र के बिना हिंदी फिल्म जगत के इतिहास की दास्तान अधूरी रहेगी। रफ़ी साब ने पार्श्वगायन के क्षेत्र को उस मुकाम पे पहुँचाया कि आज, उनके निधन के 39 साल बाद भी, उनकी उपलब्धियों को एक हासिल न कर सकने वाला बेंचमार्क माना जाता है।
उनके गाये बहुत से गीत उन फिल्मों की कहानी को बयान करने का एक ज़रिया बने या यूं कहिये कि वो कहानी की आत्मा बन गए। फिल्म जगत के कई चमकते सितारों की सफलता का अधिकाँश श्रेय उनके द्वारा परदे पर गाये उन गीतों को जाता है जिन्हें रफ़ी साब ने अपनी मधुर आवाज़ से सुशोभित किया। दिलीप कुमार की ट्रेजेडी किंग की छवि हो या देव आनंद का रोमांटिक अंदाज़ या गुरुदत्त का दर्शन शास्त्रिक प्रतिरूप या जानी वाकर की हास्य शैली या धर्मेन्द्र का हीमैन इमेज; उस ज़माने के सभी छोटी के सितारों को रफ़ी साब ने अपनी जादुई आवाज़ के ज़रिये उनके फ़िल्मी व्यक्तित्व को एक विशिष्टता दी।
रफ़ी साब के गाये गीत किसी भी धर्म, जाति, संप्रदाय, भाषा या क्षेत्र की सीमाओं से परे इंसान की अंतर्मुखी भावनाओं की अभिव्यक्ति हैं। इन इंसानी भावनाओं को रफ़ी साब ने अपने गायन से इतना बाखूबी व्यक्त किया है कि वे सीधा दिल की गहराइयों में उतर कर आत्मा को छू लेते हैं। फिल्म संगीत की हर गीत-शैली में रफ़ी साब में कई लाजवाब, यादगार और अमर गीत दिए हैं।
एक अतिविशिष्ट गायक होने के अलावा रफ़ी साब इंसानियत और नेक दिली की एक उत्तम मिसाल थे। उनकी मानवता के कार्य, जिनमें से अधिकांश उनके निधन के बाद ही सामने आए, कुछ ऐसे हैं जो हमें बिल्कुल अविश्वसनीय लगते हैं। क्रूर व्यावसायीकरण और निर्मम तरीकों के लिए जानी जाने वाली फिल्म इंडस्ट्री का हिस्सा होने के बावजूद दूसरों की मदद करना, एक धन के अबाव से ग्रस्त प्रोडूसर के लिए मुफ्त में गाने या एक नए संगीत निर्देशक के लिए केवल एक टोकन राशि लेना, नियमित रूप से मौद्रिक सहायता के साथ गरीबों की मदद करना, रुपयों का एक बंडल बीमार संगीत निर्देशक मोहम्मद शफी (जो अपने अंतिम दिनों के दौरान अपनी बीमारी के इलाज का खर्च नहीं उठा सके) के पास छोड़ आना, एक गीत (ईश्वर अल्लाह तेरो नाम…..) की रिकॉर्डिंग से मिली पूरी राशि उस रिकॉर्डिंग वाले भवन के लिफ्टमैन को उसकी बेटी की शादी के खर्चे के लिए दे देना, मुंबई के एक अस्पताल को डायलिसिस मशीन दान में दे देना; उनके दिव्य कृत्यों के कुछ ऐसे अनगिनत उदाहरण हैं जो ईश्वर के सबसे करीबी व्यक्ति ही कर सकता है। रफी साहब की महानता के इस मानवीय पहलू पर अंतहीन कथाएँ लिखी जा सकती हैं।
सभी संगीत प्रेमी इस बात का दर्द महसूस करते हैं कि ऐसे महान गायक, ऐसी महान हस्ती जिन्होंने पूरे देश को अपनी आवाज़ के माध्यम से एकता में पिरोने का काम किया, भारत सरकार की तरफ से उनके योगदान के अनुसार मान्यता नहीं मिली। हालांकि सन 1965 में उन्हें पद्मश्री से नवाज़ा गया था, लेकिन यह उनके गायन क्षेत्र में अद्वितीय योगदान के लिया पर्याप्त नहीं है। उनके समकालीन संगीतज्ञों, गायक गायिकायों को ऊंचे सम्मान (जैसे पद्म विभूषण, भारत रत्न, दादा साहब फाल्के अवार्ड वगैरह) से सम्मानित किया जा चुका है। लेकिन गायिकी के इस अनमोल रत्न को सर्वोच्य सम्मान, भारत रत्न, जिसके वो पूर्ण हकदार हैं, नहीं दिया गया है. ऐसा प्रतीत होता है कि रफ़ी साब के पार्श्वगायन क्षेत्र में किये गए योगदान, जो किसी राष्ट्रीय धरोहर से कम नहीं है, का कभी उचित आंकलन ही नहीं किया गया है। देश की विभिन्न सरकारों द्वारा उनके बेमिसाल योगदान की अनदेखी की गयी है।
इस लेख द्वारा हमारी मौजूदा सरकार से अपील और प्रार्थना है कि रफ़ी साब के बेजोड़ गीतों, उनकी इंसानियत और नेक दिली और अटूट देश भक्ति के महान योगदान को उचित मान्यता देते हुए, भारत के इस रत्न को मरणोंपरांत ‘भारत रत्न’ से सम्मानित किया जाए।
रफ़ी साब को भारत रत्न देना न केवल उनके योगदान को सम्मानित करना होगा, बल्कि इसके साथ देश के करोड़ों संगीत प्रेमियों की भावनाओं का सम्मान करना भी होगा। इससे इस अवार्ड की सार्थकता को भी एक बल मिलेगा।

I have just read this with some slight difficulty (due to not being too fluent in the language) but it brought tears to my eyes when I learned of the numerous charitable acts of Rafi Sb. that came to light after his leaving the world.
So humble, so pious, so gentle, so unassuming, so generous and wonderful as a human – and so talented, so mesmerizing and totally unforgettable as a singer. But not acknowledged as such by the country he lived in and represented, where his voice is still heard in innumerable street corners across the country. The country for which he sang some of the most patriotic songs – and with so much sincerity and respect.
It is true that if ever there was one artist who did not care about awards and recognition, it was he. He sang for for pleasure, for love of the art. His face was always lit up by his angelic smile. I don’t know who can be called a Ratna if he cannot. His contribution is immeasurable. Without meaning any disrespect to Lata-ji at all, but if she was considered suitable for the award,Rafi Sahab should also have been awarded simultaneously. And yet, it has not happened even now.
But I have to agree with comments which say that perhaps the award has lost its meaning anyway. India does not seem to be that country anymore where “the mind is without fear and the head is held high”.
Despite that, I also have to admit that the article brought up those thoughts again and the frustration that goes with it. It is an unacceptable cruelty that a gem like Rafi Sahab has been so deliberately disrespected. Those particular people who are responsible for this will certainly not be remembered. Rafi Sahab’s name will never be forgotten. Neither will his voice.
Though I also prefer honouring him with this award, seeing the current political scenario, I too have lost interest as the award has lost its sheen. More than the award the fan following of the Farishta all over the world, gives me total satisfaction as none can match this Farishta.
Rafi is the God of playback singing. Bharat Ratna is not meant for giving to Gods. This is the reason that Supreme Souls such as Rama, Krishna, Buddha, Mahavir, Nanak and Gandhi, who were all Indians, are never considered for this award. The Gods are beyond the awards meant for mortals.
Rafi ji is a legend and he needs to be honoured posthumously with Bharat Ratna.
