Shammi Kapoor in Junglee

Shammi Kapoor in Junglee

That was his voice, ranging from here to there, just like the skies. Fifty years ago, when the actor came sliding down a snow-covered slope like an avalanche, he and his voice morphed into one. A junglee was born. And 31 years after the voice left him, he joins his “asman se aya farishta” voice. Thirty one:  3 and 1.  Shammi Kapoor was born in 1931. Rafi left us on July 31. Both of them left us on the 13th day of Ramadan.

31 is a prime number.

31 = 10 X 3 + 1. Ten hat-tricks plus one.

And when those hat-tricks are scored by that magical voice, they are called Rafi-tricks. As our dear friend, the late Sandeep Nadkarni, had once remarked, ” Rafi saab was the greatest magician.” I am going to list 10 such Rafi-tricks from the decade the junglee cult was born, a period in which Rafi was the monarch of all he surveyed. I will use the definition of hat-trick from football, where a player has to score three goals, but not necessarily in succession.

Here are the rules of the game:

1. A Rafi-trick must have three brilliant Rafi goals in the same film.
2. A Rafi-trick must have at least two solo goals; the third goal may be an assist.
3. A Rafi-trick must have had a lasting impact on Hindi film music.
4. A composer can score a maximum of one Rafi-trick. This it to prevent the likes of Shankar-Jaikishan, S.D.Burman, Naushad and O.P.Nayyar from dominating the scene.

In loving memory of Shammi Kapoor, I will include three Rafi-tricks; that is called a Shammi-trick, a special kind of triple hat-trick. The Shammi-trick has been scored by three trend-setters.

The Rafi-tricks I will list have been penned by the likes of Shakeel Badayuni, Sahir Ludhianvi, Kaifi Azmi, Shailendra, Neeraj, Hasrat Jaipuri, Majrooh Sultanpuri, S.H.Bihari and Anand Bakshi.

In addition to Rafi’s pancha ratna — Naushad, Shankar-Jaikishan, S. D. Burman, Madan Mohan and O. P. Nayyar — I will include three upstarts who came of age in that decade and challenged the status quo. I will also include scores from a supremely gifted composer, a second composer who has delivered numerous Rafi gems and finally a dark horse.

The +1 song will mark the beginning of the decade, the year of the moon. Two moons shone that year, one playing hide and seek behind the clouds and the other radiating from the face of a beautiful woman. It is the latter that I will select as the +1 song:

Chaudhvin ka chand ho ya aftab ho (1960) — Shakeel, Ravi

And here are the 10 Rafi-tricks:

1. Hum Dono (1961) — Sahir, Jaidev

Main zindagi ka saath nibhata chala gaya
Kabhi khud pe kabhi halat pe rona aya
Abhi na jao chhod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahi

2. Mere Mehboob (1963) — Shakeel, Naushad

Mere mehboob tujhe meri mohabbat ki kasam
Aye husn zara jaag tujhe ishq jagaye
Yaad mein teri jaag jaag ke hum

3. Haqeeqat (1964) — Kaifi Azmi, Madan Mohan

Main yeh soch kar uske dar se utha tha
Ab tumhare hawale watan sathiyon
Hoke majboor mujhe usne bulaya hoga

4. Kashmir ki Kali (1964) — S. H. Bihari, O. P. Nayyar

Yeh chand sa roshan chehra
Hai duniya usiki zamana usika
Deewana huwa badal sawan ki ghata chhayee

5. Cha Cha Cha (1964) — Neeraj, Iqbal Qureshi

Subah na aayee shaam na aayee
Woh hum na the woh tum na the
Ek chameli ke mandve tale

6. Dosti (1964) — Majrooh, Laxmikant Pyarelal

Chahunga main tujhe saanj savere
Janewalo zara mudke dekho mujhe
Rahi manwa dukh ki chinta

7. Guide (1965) — Shailendra, S. D. Burman

Tere mere sapne ab ek rang hai
Din dhal jaye hai raat na jaye
Kya se kya ho gaya bewafa tere pyar mein

8. Jab Jab Phool Khile (1965) – Anand Bakshi, Kalyanji Anandji

Pardesiyon se na ankhiyan milana
Yahan main ajnabi hoon
Ek tha gul aur ek thi bulbul

9. Teesri Manzil (1966) — Majrooh, R. D. Burman

Tum ne mujhe dekha hokar mehrban
Deewana mujh sa nahin is ambar ke neeche
Aaja aaja main hoon pyar tera

10. Brahmachari (1967) — Hasrat Jaipuri, Shankar-Jaikishan

Dil ke jharoken mein tujhko bitha kar
Main gaoon tum so jao
Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche

I have listed above 10 Rafi-tricks from the 1960s, plus a very special song that heralded his reign in that decade. Out of these 31 songs, at least 10 should easily find a place in the top 50 Hindi film songs of all time. And buried within these Rafi-tricks are several hat-tricks. Let me see how many of them Rafi bhakts can unearth. Such was his dominance in that decade that it would be quite easy to identify 10 additional Rafi-tricks. I leave that exercise for my fellow Rafians.

You are too kind. Both of you are two of the most knowledgeable individuals on hfm.

Your posts are a delight to read.

    haldar ji,

you were right. ali rashid has some real talent, which is apparent from his reply. unfortunately, i do not have this aptitude, yet i enjoy such information.

    bhagchandani ji,

many rafi-tricks remain. and ravi is not far behind, because he was alone and sj were two.

    Dear Ali Rashid,

I have a feeling that there’s one more famous musician who scored a hat-trick. I know for sure that he was involved in songs from two of the films on the list, but I can’t be 100% sure if he was involved in a third film.

Talash, released in 1969, was the first film to hit the Rs. 1 crore mark. I have a feeling that the musician I’m thinking of was also involved in this song from Talash:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QCQcNDfFmA

As Dada’s voice fades into the background, Rafi takes over. In the other duet, before Rafi is about to take over from Lata, the son chips in with “ke jaas re bhati gang gaiyaa”.

    Dear Ali Rashid,

That’s fantastic! I knew you’d have all the answers. Here are some more random thoughts:

    1. Dal Lake, Srinagar, scores a hat-trick.
    2. The three Anands are present.
    3. Father, son and holy ghost are present.
    5. Dada’s three assistants are present.

    Hans ji,

    Thanks for your compliments.

I think we have covered most of the Rafi-tricks. Shankar Jaikishan have been on top by some distance.

Somehow I am not able to solve Haldar ji’s riddle of post 25. I am still waiting for his reply.

    Dear Haldar-ji,

A few more personalities who scored hat-tricks on your list are:

Vijay (Goldie) Anand – he wrote the story for Hum Dono, acted in Haqeeqat, and directed both Guide and Teesri Manzil.

Pyarelal – He played the violin in “Main yeh soch kar” for Madan Mohan in Haqeeqat. Along with Laxmikant, they were official assistants to K-A in Jab Jab Phool Khile, and L-P composed Dosti.

R.D. Burman – played the mouth organ in the songs of Dosti, officially assisted SD in Guide, and composed Teesri Manzil.

Manohari Singh – his saxophone is part of the Rafi classics from Kashmir Ki Kali, Guide, Teesri Manzil, and Brahmachari.

    Hans ji,

Right from the age of 11, my passion has been hindi film music. Though my writing may sometimes indicate otherwise, I love all the characters involved in hfm; you can call me an hfm junkie. But there are many people who are much more knowledgeable than me; one such person is Ali Rashid. Ali can crack every riddle I post; he is that good. I’m still waiting for his response.

  9. Hans says:

    haldar ji,

i was lucky with the riddle you posted, because i did not know that dev was offered teesri manzil. i am a fan of your style of writing – talking in idioms and posing riddles. actually i share with you the taste of music. almost all of the songs you mention are my favourites. if i am asked to choose one song from kala bazaar, i would choose ‘apni to har aah’. ‘pipra ke patwa’ which you frequently mention is also my favourite.

coming to rafi-tricks, i have identified 34 for sj, 22 for ravi, 9 each for naushad & lp, 8 for madan mohan, 6 each for chitragupta and roshan, 5 for ka, 4 each for sdb and opn. and 3 or less for some others. i will be posting them gradually.

  10. Hans says:

    bhagchandani ji,

where are you. i was inspired by your wonderful rafi-tricks and now you have gone missing.

you talked about do dil rafi trick and haldarji had reservations about ‘kanton men phansa anchal’. i think that song is good enough to be included. but you can try another rafi solo from this film picturised on mehmood ‘raam raam japna paraya maal apna’ which is also a very entertaining song. rafi had also sung ‘raam naam japna paraya maal apna’ in suvarna sundari of ‘kuhu kuhu bole koyalia’ fame. rafi sang both quite differently. similarly he sang two quality songs by two great mds, starting with ‘aise to na dekho’ in the year 1965. one is quite obvious to all. the other one is from ‘bheegi raat’.

for ‘nayi umar ki nayi fasal’ also there is another rafi solo ‘isko bhi apnata chal’, though it is perfectly valid to take ‘aaj ki raat’ as two songs. i have also included the duet and solo with the same mukhda ‘dil ki tamanna thi’ in the rafi-trick for n.datta.

i have fulfilled your wish for rafi-tricks of khaiyyam, n.datta and sn tripathi, though i could not find for vasant desai. hope somebody else might do so.

    Dear Ali Rashid,

Really happy to see you on this forum. In my article, I wrote that “buried within these rafi-tricks are several hat-tricks.” I have already identified a couple: Shammi and Asha. Which are the others? Please take a look at my list and see if you can identify other personalities who scored a hat-trick. I know that with your extensive knowledge of hfm, you’ll be able to identify a few.

  14. Ali Rashid says:

    Dear Haldar-ji,

Excellent post on Rafi-tricks!. Rafi-saab ruled HFM like a King, which is the true fact that no one can deny.

There is no male singer who has had a greater impact on HFM than Rafi.

  15. Hans says:

    haldarji,

thanks for appreciating my list. who can forget ‘aasman se aaya’ or the film. i have not also forgotten ‘jab pyar kisise hota hai’. in fact bhagchandaniji had already mentioned that film in his post 16, where he mentioned 16 sj films with rafi-tricks. and when i started to jot down sj rafi-tricks this film was at s.no. 2. i had already prepared the lists of rafi hits for shammi and rajendra in some other contexts.

actually, it is your brilliant idea which has allowed us to look at rafi’s hit songs in a totally different way and i was surprised when i found more than 120 films of 60s where rafi has scored hat-tricks, most of which have 4,5 or 6 hit songs. these lists by us seasoned rafians would help the new fans in understanding the depth of impact rafi had on hfm.

as to your question, it was dev anand who missed scoring hat-trick. majrooh also had two, but perhaps you wanted to include as many lyricists as possible for variety’s sake.

    more later.

    Haldar ji (Post 25):

I could not solve your quiz/ query. Please tell us.

  17. P. Haldar says:

    Dear friends,

Mr. Waljah, Mr. Bhagchandani and Mr. Hans have identified several Rafi-tricks from the 1960s. As I had myself wrote, it would be quite easy to identify several other Rafi-tricks, such was his dominance in that decade. But I also wrote that “buried within these Rafi-tricks are several hat-tricks.” One hat-trick, as mentioned in the article, is scored by Shammi Kapoor. Another example is the one is scored by Asha. Which are the other ones? Why don’t we start with the following question:

Based on the 10 Rafi-tricks featured in the article, identify which personality missed scoring a hat-trick?

  18. P. Haldar says:

    Hans ji,

Great list! I was waiting for someone to remember the “asman se aya farishta”. And you did. Rafi didn’t score a mere hat-trick; he scored a double rafi-trick. It’s so easy to forget some of the rafi-tricks, given that he had so many in that decade. It is really an embarrassment of riches. And you yourself have forgotten a major one, scored on your favourite actor as he is about to enter the Darjelling mall (tum dil ho dilurba ho…).

    P. Haldar

  19. Hans says:

haldarji gave a set of 10 rafi-tricks one each by different mds. in the same way i am giving rafi-tricks of mds other than those given by him. i list below 11 mds and their rafi- tricks, in which none of the mds included by haldarji has been included. this shows the versatility, dominance and universal acceptability of rafi in the 60s.

naseeb men jiske jo likha tha
    raha gardishon men hardam
    bhari duniya men akhir dil

    11. lal quila (sn tripathi, zafar)

na kisi ki ankh ka noor hoon
    lagta nahin hai dil mera
    jaan hatheli par lekar

  20. Hans says:

haldarji and bhagchandaniji – both rafians who eat, drink and breathe rafi – have already listed and discussed the best of rafi-tricks. if still i am trying my lists is in itself evidence to the vast amount of rafi gems. haldarji had rightly said, when shammi “came sliding down a snow-covered slope like an avalanche, he and his voice morphed into one”. the post juglee 60s was the era of shammi who gave hit after hit and as rafi was always with him, a number of rafi-tricks were created. haldarji gave 3 and i am giving more which i know. there may be some left.

    1. boy friend – mujhe apna yaar; dhire chal dhire chal;kyonji mujhepehchana
    2. professor – ae gulbadan; khuli palak men; awaz deke humen.
    3. dil tera deewana – nazar bacha kar; masoom chehara; mujhe kitna pyar.
    4. raj kumar – is rang badalti; janewalo jara hoshiar; tumne pukara aur
    5. janwar – meri muhabbat jawan; lal chhadi maidan; dillo jigarlo jaanlo
    6. budtameej – haseen ho tum khuda; dil ko na mere; budtameej kaho ya
    7. lath sahab – sawere wali gadi; jane mera dil kise; dil le gayi le gayi
    8. an evening ip – aasman se aaya; akele akele kahan; deewane ka naam
    9. tumse achha kh – ganga meri maa; janam janam ka; kisko pyar karun
    10. prince – badan pe sitare; nazar men bijli, madhosh hawa matwali
    11. junglee – chahe koi mujhe; ehsan tera hoga; aiaiya karun main kya
    12. vallah kya baat hai – game hasti se bas; khanke to khanke; wo bijli hai
    13. pyar kiya to dk – zindagi kya hai; janebahar husn tera; jab tak hum hain
    14. china town – baar baar dekho; dekhoji ek bala; humse na puchho
    15. preet na jane reet – main bewafa nahin;teri zulfen pareshan;yun na dekho

of these first 11 are by sj, no 12 by roshan, no 13 and 14 by ravi and 15 by kalyanji-anandji. add to these 3 listed by haldarji and we have 18. can any actor-singer combo match this.

  21. Hans says:

    haldarji

sorry for responding so late to this excellent write-up, as i was busy. i would second what bhagchandaniji said in his post 5, about this imaginative criteria of yours. if a singer contributes 3 brilliant songs then he should be taken as dominating as well as providing a major contribution in the success of that film. i agree with your idea of giving solos precedence over duets, though by this films like taj mahal would not make the list where rafi has one solo.

though it is your personal choice, your not including ravi in panch-ratnas is baffling, because he produced more than 20 rafi-tricks in the 60s. sj (more than 30 rafi-tricks) and ravi produced rafi-tricks in round about 50% of the films in which they composed, even though sj had the handicap of rk films and ravi of br films where they were forced to not use rafi as the main singer. naushad composed in only 13 films but produced rafi-tricks in 9 of them. these 3 should have been compulsorily included. you have included sdb who produced just 4 (including ziddi) rafi-tricks out of 22 films in which he gave music.

this is only my opinion and i am not challenging or questioning your right to choose whoever you like.

i will be providing my lists in my following posts.

  22. J.K. Bhagchandani says:

    Post 18 (contd)…

Correction: LP’s ‘Shagird’ can not be considered under ‘Rafi-tricks’ as the song ‘Bade miyan deewane…’ that I considered (as solo) is actually an all male duet (Rafi-Manna Dey). However SJ’s ‘Love in Tokyo’ can be included which has been missed all along.

  23. J.K. Bhagchandani says:

    Haldar ji (Post 17):

I had not forgotten Kala Bazar. I was under the impression that the movie was of 1959. Thanks for the correction. The song ‘Apni to har aah ek toofan hai…’ is my favourite too. I would include this song among top ten happy solos of all times.

Still some Rafi-tricks (of 60s decade) have been missed. They are SJ’s ‘Prince’ and ‘Tum se achha kaun hai’, LP’s ‘Shagird’ and ‘Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke’ and Iqbal Qureshi’s ‘Love In Shimla’.

I fully understood your coded language. Great analysis.

    -J.K. Bhagchandani

  24. M.I. Rahman says:

Very nice-unique way of writing a tribute Haldarji. Will list mine:

    1. Likhe Jo Khat – Kanyadan – Shankar Jaikishan,
    2. Jab Dil Se Dil Takarata Hain – Sanghursh – Naushad,
    3. Ponch Kar Ashq – Naya Rasta – N Dutta,
    4. Jahan Daal Daal Par – Sikandar-e- Azam -Hansraj Behl,
    5. Nazar Aati Nahin Manzil – Kanch Aur Heera – Ravindra Jain,
    6. Yahan Main Ajnabi Hoon – Jab Jab Phool Khilen – Kalyanji Anandji,
    7. Charag Dil Ka Jalao – Chirag – Madan Mohan,
    8. Aa Zara Mere Hamnashee – Poonam – Anu Mallik,
    9. Pathar Ke Sanam – Pathar Ke Sanam – Laxmi Pyare,
    10. Dono ne Kiya tha Pyar – Mahua – Sonik Omi,
    11. Kahi Ek Masoom Kali – Shankar Hussain – Khayyam,
    12. Haseen Wadiyon – Lal Bangla – Usha Khnanna,
    13. So Ja Sanam – Rocky Mera Naam – Sapan Jagmohan

  25. P. Haldar says:

    post 16:

    Bhagchandani ji,

Great list of Rafi-tricks! SJ really dominated the scene. By the way, you forgot to include a beautiful Rafi-trick by Dada: Kala Bazaar. “Khoya khoya chaand” dominates every other song in the film, and there’s the beautiful duet with Geeta Dutt. But my personal favourite has been “Apni to har aah ek toofan hai”:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuRQ-9zK75g

And just as “Black Market” marked the beginning of the 60s, “Gambler” heralded the 70s:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TlnAG_1Aw0

That magical Dada-Rafi touch! Incidentally, this song has been included in the background of an American film.

I’ll use coded language to counter some of the misdirected analysis going on this forum; I know you’ll understand.

“When the gambler started gambling with his two winners, his career came to an end — ruk ruk ruk…”

  26. J.K. Bhagchandani says:

    Haldar ji (Post 15):

First of all one clarifications w.r.t the Rafi- tricks that I listed in posts 5 and 8. It is not qualitative sequencing of the tricks. Your response to it has put that list in proper perspective (more or less), though I would differ on some, but that is besides the point.

O.P. Nayyar’s other films that would find the place in the list are Mere Sanam and Ek Musafir Ek Hasina. For Shankar Jaikishan it would be Professor, Janwar, Jab Pyar Kisi se hota hai, Asli Naqli, Suraj, Jhuk Gaya Aasman, Aman, Dil Ek Mandir, April Fool, Latt Saab, An Evening in Paris, Mere Huzoor, Aayee Milan ki bela, Beti Bete, Hamrahi and Raj Kumar. For Roshan apart from Bahu Begum, Bheegee Raat and Dooj Ka Chand, ‘Nai Umar ki Nai fasal’ can also be included if we consider two versions of song ‘Aaj ki raat badi shokh badi natkhat hai’ (solo and duet) as separate songs. For Naushad Koh-i-noor, Saaz aur Awaz, Aadmi, Palki and Ram Aur Shyam can be included. Madan Mohan’s Gazal and Aapki Parchhaiyan would feature. Let us not forget great Ravi, for him it would be Nai Roshni, Shahanai and Pyar Kiya to darna kya. For Kalyan ji Anand ji Aamne Saamne should also figure in the list.

I included ‘Maya’ because of the same reason that you pointed out. As far as ‘Do Dil’ is concerned, I find the song ‘kaanton mein phansa aanchal…’ reasonable (though not in same class as other two), may be a 50-50 case. I agree that for Laxmi Kant Pyarelal ‘Mere humdum Mere dost’ should rank higher that ‘Jeene Ki Raah’.

So overall so many Rafi-tricks. Add to it the tricks of fifties and the films with less than 3 songs that Rafi sang, one will get the idea of the extent of dominance of Rafi saab in those two decades.

  27. P Haldar says:

Dear Walijah saab and Bhagchandani saab,

Very good lists of hat-tricks! As Bhagchandani ji has pointed out, my focus was only on the 1960s, otherwise Pyaasa and Baiju Bawra would have definitely been featured. The other thing I’d like to point out that there are many films in which Rafi sang three or more songs, but to qualify as a Rafi-trick, it has to satisfy Rule no. 1. And Bhagchandani ji, as I am writing, “tera husn rahe mera ishq rahe”is playing in the background. What a song! And I love the duet “sara mora kajra” with Aarti Mukherji. It is the second song that does not quite do the trick. I realize that it’s very difficult to find Rafi-tricks like Hum Dono, Dosti and Guide, where it’s a problem to decide which song is better than the other. And there are personal likes and dislikes, which tend to be subjective.

For the 10 additional Rafi-tricks, I’d use the following scores by Rafi’s pancha ratna:

    Dil diya dard liya
    Aarzoo
    Tere ghar ke samne
    Sharabi
    Phir wohi dil laya hoon

I’d include Roshan’s Barsaat ki Raat, but I’d replace the 2nd or 3rd song listed by Bhagchandani ji with the No. 1 qawaali of Hindi films., “yeh ishq ishq”. And instead of LP’s “Jeene ki Raah”, I’d include their “Mere Humdum Mere Dost”; the three Rafi numbers in that film are out of this world.

Three more to go! OP has two more (including Ek Musafir Ek Hasina cited by Walijah saab), SJ has at least two more and Dada has one more, but we cannot violate Rule no. 4. So I’ll go along with Maya, although I know including “zindagi hai kya” may be stretching it a little, but what the hell! This is one of the rare instances where Rafi is the lead singer in a Salil-composed film.

I’d include Ravi’s “Aaj aur kal” or “Do Badan”.

For the 10th spot, I could live with Sonik Omi’s “Dil ne phir yaad kiya” or Pancham’s “Pyar ka mausam”.

    Regards,
    P. Haldar

Wonder what Raju Bharatan must be thinking. Poor guy; can’t imagine how Westerners keep tuning in to Rafi’s songs recorded 45 years ago!

The King of Rock ‘n Roll keeps rocking even now.

    Dear JKB saab,

I think there is only one song of Rafi Saab in Devdas [1955] –

    “Manzil ki chaah mein”
Sung by Mohammad Rafi and chorus
    Music by Sachin Dev Burman
    Lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi

    Dear Friends,

I am bit disappointed with the lukewarm response to this wonderful and ‘out of the box’ write-up by a great rafian Mr. P. Haldar. May be people are busy with Diwali preparations.

    Haldar ji,

I just now re-read one of your old posts on this web site. It is comment no. 33 in the thread ‘Versatility, Thy Name is Mohammed Rafi’ (August 2009) where you have mentioned (and provided link for) certain song of Rafi saab from the movie Devdas. I will be obliged if you tell which song is it, as the clicking of link provided by you displays removal of the song from the site youtube. Thanks

  32. Ali says:

If i am not wrong RD Burman gave his best music ever was in filmTeesri Manzil(as I think)where there was M Rafi with Shammi ji and that was one of few films in bollywood when a singer voice(m Rafi) used for all film song, also RD best film in 1980’s was Shaan also that was because of M Rafi(as I think)also rd gave us great songs without using mohd rafi but when ever he used mohd rafi the songs was hit(as I think).
a football player can score 3 goals but that not mean that his team going to win or in a cricket match a player scored 200 runs also that not mean they going to win but when mohd rafi sang a song the song was hit..

  33. Adish says:

    Dear, Haldharji
Thanks for writing in a new way.

I would draw your kind attn that the lorie from “Brahmachari” i.e. “Main Gaoon Tum So Jao” is a composition of Shailendra and not Hasrat Jaipuri. Pls rectify the same

  34. J.K. Bhagchandani says:

    Contd. from Post 4:

First of all apologies for some typo errors.

I missed the point that Haldar ji had already included Chadvin Ka Chand song as a special song (in the very first place). Hence I would like to revise Sl. No. 12 of my post as under:

    Aaj Aur Kal: (Ravi)

Itni hasin itni jawan raat kya Karen…
Ye wadiyan ye fizayen bula rahi hain tumhen..
    Mujhe gale se lagaa lo….

One more addition (Sl . No. 15):

    Do Dil: (Hemant Kumar)

Tera husn rahe mera ishq rahe…
    Kaanton Mein Phansa Aanchal…
    Sara mora kajra churaya tumne…

    Walijah ji (Post 6)

Haldar ji and me were listing Rafi-tricks of decade 1960s. Your many such listing is from 1950s and 1970s. If we include all the decades then probably the list will swell like anything.

I could not come up with such listing for music directors Khayyam, Vasant Desai (though if we include 1950s, then probably Goonj Uthi Shahanai will find the place), N.Datta and S.N. Tripathi. Could someone make an effort for that?

  35. H.A.K. Walijah says:

Here is my list of Rafi-tricks which I instantly gathered from my memory:

    Deedaar – Shakeel, Naushad
Huye hum jin ke liye barbaad
    Naseeb dar pe tere aazmana
Meri kahani bhulne wale tera jahan

Laila Majnu – Sahir, Madan Mohan
    Barbadade mohabbat ki dua
    Yeh reshmi pazeb ke sadqe
    Tere dar pe aaya hoon

Mehbob ki Mehendi – Anand Bakshi , Laxmikant Pyarelal
    Apana hai tu begana nahin
    Yeh jo chilman hai
    Itna to yaad hai mujhe

    Pyasa – Sahir, S.D. Burman
    Sar jo t era chakraye
    Hum aap ki aankhon main
Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaye

Mere Huzoor – Shjankar jaikishan – Hasrat
    Falak pe jitney sitare
    Rukh se zara
    Jo gazar rahi mujh par

Dharma (1973) – Verma Malik, Sonik Omi
    Main Teri Gunaahgaar Hoon
Na Satra Se Upar Na Solha Se Kam
Raaz Ki Baat Keh Doon Toh

    Do Badan – Shakeel, Ravi
    Naseeb main jiske jo likha
    Raha Gardishon main har dam
    Bhari duniya main aakhir dil

Ek Musafir Ek Hasina – S.H. Bihari , O.P. Nayyar
    Main pyar ka rahi hoon
    Aap yun hi agar
    Hum ko tumhare ishq ne

R.D. Burman, Majrooh – Hum kisi se kam nahin
    Kya hua tera vaada
    Hum kisi se kam nain
    Chand mera dil

I think there are many more such rafi-tricks, I hope fellow rafians may go further in research and decorate this essay.

  37. J.K. Bhagchandani says:

    Haldar ji,

Absolutely brilliant and engrossing write-up. The very concept is innovative. You have stirred Rafi fans into making their own Rafi-tricks. Here is my list of additional such Rafi-tricks that I could think of:

    1. Tere Ghar ke saamne: (S.D. Burman)

    Dil ka bhanwar kare pukar…
    Tu kahan ye bataa..
    Dekho rootha na karo..

    2. Dil ne phir yaad kiya: (Sonik Omi)

    Kaliyon ne ghoonghat khole…
    Lo chehra surkh shabaab hua..
    Dil ne phir yaad kiya…

    3. Sharabi: (Madan Mohan)

    Kabhi na kabhi….
    Mujhe le chalo..
    Sawan ke mahine mein..

    4. Hasina Maan Jaayegi: (Kalyanji Anandji)

    O Dilbar Janiye..
    Chale the saath mil kar..
    Bekhudi mein sanam..

    5. Barsaat Ki Raat: (Roshan)

    Zindagi bhar nahin bhoolegi..
    Maine Shayad tumhen..
Mayoos to hoon wade se tere..

    6. Aarzoo: (Shankar Jaikishan)

    Ae nargis-e-mastana..
    Chhalke teri aankhon se..
    Ae phoolon ki rani..

    7. Phir wohi dil laya ho (O.P. Nayyar)

    Bandaa parwar….
    Lakhon hain nigah mein..
Aanchal mein saja le na kaliyan…

    8. Jeene Ki Raah: (Laxmi Kant Pyarelal)

    Aane se uske aaye bahaar..
    Ek Banjara gaye….
    Aa mere humjoli aa…

    9. Pyaar Ka Mausam: (R.D. Burman)

    Tum bin jaoon kahan..
    Che khush nazare…
    Ni Siltana re…

    10. Leader: (Naushad)

Hamin se mohabbat hamin se ladaai…
Apni azadi ko hum hargiz mita sakte nahin…
Tere husn ki kya taarif karoon..

    11. Vaasna: (Chitragupta)

    Aal is darja pila do…
    Itni nazuk na bano..
    Ye parbaton ke daayre..

    12. Chaudavin Ka Chand: (Ravi)

Chaudavin ka chand ho ya aaftab ho..
    Mili Khaak mein mohabbt..
    Mera yaar bana hai dulha…

    13. Aao Pyar Karen: (Usha Khanna)

Jahan tu hai wanan phir chandni ko kaun poochhega…
    Ye jhuki jhuki nigahen teri….
Tum akele to kabhi bag mein….

    14. Maya: (Salil Chawdhary)

    Koi son eke dil wala…
Zindagi hai kya sun meri jaan..
    Tasveer teri dil mein…

Haldar ji, I too have followed same rules (set by you): One composer can score a maximum of one Rafi-trick, otherwise my figure would have been much bigger with music directors like Naushad, S.D. Burman, O.P. Nayyar, Laxmi Kant Pyarelal, Madan Mohan, Shankar Jaikishan providing plenty of such movies with Rafi-tricks.

    Dear Haldar Saab,

Welcome back to rafi forum after a hiatus of many years in a writer position, if I am not wrong. The veteran rafi fans should come forward to bring out the unique titles and content which belongs to the Badshaah singer. I am very much impressed with the cult figure 31 which you very nicely elaborated. Apart from 31 you have given many tricks, hatricks and metric tons of songs of rafi sahab which is the sole energy for rafi fans to feed on to their musical ears. I shall come back again with hatrick songs of Rafi Sahab, I think we have many like that songs. As of now I congratulate you for writing one of the wonderful piece of writings on Shammi Sahab and Rafi Sahab which shows your undying love towards the legends.

Thanks a lot my friend, I remain a fan of Rafi Saab
