BBC Interview of Rafi Sahab in 1977

Here is an audio treat – the audio interview of the legend. This was in Brittania, during 1977 while Rafi Sahab was on world tour. My thanks to Shuklas@HF for providing us all this interview. The transcript of the interview is below. Just read through and listen to Rafi Sahab speak in his soft voice. How transparent he is in his thoughts.

Mohd Rafi, jo lagta hai abhi kal taq jo hamare darmiyan the, aur phir voh chale gaye. Abhi chand baras huve jo woh London aaye the; unse ghulmil kar baatein ho rahin thi. Yakeen nahin aata jitni oonche unki taane thi, use se bhi oonchi aasmaanon mein unhone basera kar liya hai, aur jitne neechi unki sur the, unhe us se bhi zyada neechi need aagayi hai. Mohd Rafi, marhoom. Yeh November sathathar (1977) ki baat hai, Mohd Rafi, Brittania ke kayi sheheron mein, bade bade mazhumon ke saamne gaa chuke the. Hamne unse puucha ke:

Interviewer: aapko apne saamne paakar, aur khud aapki zabaan mein, apne pasandida geet sunkar, logon ne kya mehsoos kiya?

Rafi: Bahut achha kiya ji, bahut achha kiya. Response achha mila. Public itni khush huyi bahut.

Interviewer: Achha Tho Yeh Baatayiye, ab aap is tamaam safar ke baad wapar bambai pahunchenge; wahan phir aage ke liye aapke kya mansoobe hain, kya plans hein?

Rafi: Kuch nahin, wahan jaake ham apna recording shuru kardenge ji. Sab log rasta dekh rahe hein udhar. Telephone aarahe hein, jaldi aayiye; jaldi aayiye.

Interviewer: Phir hamne Mohd Rafi se poocha ke hindustan ki filmon mein aapko gaate huve, chauthaayi sadise bhi zyada arsa ho chuka hai. Kabhi aapne hisaab lagaya hai ke, itne bahut se barason mein, aapne kul milakar kitne gaane gaaye hein?

Rafi: Aisa jahan tak mujeh yaad hai ki, mujeh isline mein painteez (35) saal hogaye, aur us arse ke andar maine pachheez hazaar (25000) gaane gaayen hein; pachheez – chabeez hazaar (25000-26000).

Interviewer: Achha pacheez-chabeez hazaar gaano mein, aisa nahin hota ke aap, kuch gaanon ke dhoone bhool gayen hon?

Rafi: Aisa tho kuch nahin, jo gaane hit horahe zyada inko, voh gaane yaad rehte hein. Kayi aise gaane bhi hein jo bhool bhi gaye hein.

Interviewer: Achha yeh batayiye ke, yeh jo microphone hein istarah jo aadmi peheli baar iske saamne aata hai tho, usko khauf aata hai. Microphone se kehete hein ke aadmi darta hai; aur, shuru mein kaafi arse taq usse khauf aata hai. Aur aap yeh samajhiye ke painteez saal microphone ke saamne guzare hein; yeh bataayi, ke jab aap, farz kijiye jab aap gaane khade huye the, yahan badla wafa ka bewafaayi ke siva kya hai, us waqt aap ko kaisa mehsoos ho raha tha?

Rafi: Aisa, zara si kuch jijhak aati, thodi si, phir baad mein tik ho jatha hai. Bajne se tho gaane, gaane ke baad phir se dhun aajaayegi.

Interviewer: Ab jab aap, mashallah itne arse se gaa rahein hein tho, ab aapko, microphone ke aage kaisa mehsoon hota hai?

Rafi: Bas, mehesoos kuch nahin hota ji. Ek dam free gaata hun mein bas.

O duniya ke rakhwale song plays.

Interviewer: Kahan hai yeh paakdaar awaaz aur kahan apni neeji zindagi mein, bhole bhale, seedhe saadhe, balke sach poochiye tho kuch, sehme sehme the Mohd Rafi. Yakeen nahin aata. Hamne unse Poocha ke recording studio mein tho aap aksar jaate hein. Lekin ab aap yahan Brittania mein, hazaaron mazhumon ke saamne gaa rahe hein. Kya us gaane mein, aur, is gaane mein kuch faraq hai?

Rafi: Ji haan. Bahut, ek dam change peheli dafa hota hai. Har public ki farmaish poori karni padti hai, aur jaise jaise log farmaish karte hein, waise hi gaana gaana padta hai. Usi Mood mein koyi Rock N Roll, Bhajan, Classical, ji waise gaana padta hai.

Interviewer: Mohd Rafi ki ek badi khoobi yeh thi ke voh thirakte huve geeton se lekar, tehre tehre classici raagon taq, sabi kuch, badi masharath se gaate the. Aise mehero mein unse poocha gaya ke, tarah tarah se filmon ke badalte huve manzaron ke muthabik, aap apne gaane ka andaaz, aur apni kaifiyath ko kaise badalte hein?

Rafi: Aise voh, director ham logon ko batate hein, shuru mein batate hein, yeh gaana voh gaarahein sab, Kayi saal pehele picture aayi thi Neel Kamal, Usmein Ek Gaana tha, Babul Ki Duvayen lethi Jaa. Us mein se, meri ek ladki ki bhi shaadi thi, us ke doosre din mein yeh gaana record kiya. Tho wahan voh ladki gaati hai, tho meri aankhon mein aaraha tha aisa, ke jaise meri ladki abhi jaa rahi hai, doli mein, aisa aisa, tho lagta tha ke, gaane ekdam jazbaat se dil se nikal gaya.

Babul Ki Duvayen Lethi Ja song plays.

Interviewer: Aur Aakhir mein hamne Mohd Rafi se poccha, Ke Aap, painteez barson mein, pacheez se chhabeez hazar gaane gaaye hein, tho kya aap samjhthe hein mausiki ki duniya mein, apni zindagi ka, sab se achha nagma aap gaa chuke hein?

Rafi: Yeh tho dariya hai music ka. Yeh tho kabhi khatam hota nahin bas. Jitne bhi is mein, har tarah khushi ka sana hoti rehegi bas ismein.

Interviewer: Ek dafa Rafi Sahab koyi tees saal huve, maine Illahbaad ke ek tehele mein aapka Interview pada tha. Us mein unhone aap se poocha tha ke Rafi Sahab, aapko apna gaya huva kaunsa gaana sab se zyada pasand hai? Us waqt aapne kaha tha, Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki. Kya apne is bayaan par aap abhi Kayam hai?

Rafi: Ji haan, yeh gaana achha hai, bahut sweet lagta hai bas.

Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki song plays.

I’m actually stuck in a rut at this present moment of time, due to copyright infringement laws… where basically you need full authorisation for distribution of such known material, concerning video footage of the great one. The actual professional convertion centre’s have refused to transfer the original 2 hours and 20 mins of video live footage of the legend in concert, due to piracy strict laws.

Even though if footage of this concert was made available to fans, then what restriction laws do I have… to prevent them from supplying millions of copies of my footage throughout the world. How do I stop these so called greedy scroungers from transfering my rare video footage for their own personal gain, only way out is to ask all fans to sign a disclaimer from prohibiting or selling any material made from my disc for their own financial gain.

Well the good news is that I have recently bought myself a new panasonic dvd recorder for £479.99 over the weekend, and will now transfer the original video of the master onto dvd-r discs. You will also have chance of witnessing the great one on youtube and you will bear witness to my solid efforts, and see for yourselves of what kind of job I have provided. Although if it was done by a professional… then he would have had the privilage of boosting the sound and enhancing the picture quality of the footage.

Maine school mein padhtaa tha, to Rafi ji ganaa sunaa.
Lekin mein unke bare kuchh nahin janta thaa. O gana tha ‘Baharon phool barasao ‘.Unka ganaa jab bhi sunta tha mujhe bahat khusi miltaa tha.
Mein dost puchha singer naam kya hai. Woh unka naam batayaa.Usi din se Rafi saheb ke gaane suntaa aa rahahun.Mein unka badaa fan hun.

  8. RAMAKRISHNA says:

I have downloaded this simple but nice interview. I used to listen to it everyday before going to bed. I used to feel very happy. Subsequently I got a video CD of RAFI sahab’s interview. When I played it in stead of feeling happy I started weeping. Its all because of beholding RAFI sahab’s simple way of answering and feeling shy to answer and his down trodden face with submissive eyes. I cant imagine that a person of highest melody with utmost handsome looks can ever be like this. And this aspect brings tears in my eyes. Three days before i.e on 30th July evening I was in RAFI sahab’s house with my friends binu & Sirish. I was talking to Mr Parvez Rafi sahab’s son in law. I was touching RAFI sahab’s chair, table, telephone and his SHARP radio I was feling very heavy in my deep within. I was feeling I should have met RAFI sahab while he was in his mortal frame I would have prostrated straight before him till he him self would lift me up……….. I am quite unfortunate to that extent to have his personal touch.

MUHAMMAD RAFI – LIVE IN CONCERT [DVD]

PLEASE NOTE: THAT THE ORIGINAL FOOTAGE HAS BEEN PASSED ONTO A PROFESSIONAL DVD TRANSFER SERVICE FOR ALL LOYAL FANS OF THE MASTER

[RESPONSE GIVEN TO FAIZAL WHO SUGGESTED THE ABOVE SERVICE]
First of all thanks a million for getting back to me with your stupendous comments concerning the video footage of the Master, which I have followed and carried out by sending off the original vhs to a proper professional service centre. I’m hoping that they will give me a fast response relating to the quality of the contents on the cassette, as it’s already been through many battles over the last 25 years or so.

The only reason that I have taken these steps is that your comments hit me right on the nail like a hammer, after all since I am advertising the dvd for sale… so let’s go further by improving and enhancing the picture and sound quality. Could you imagine me offering it to anyone and then having to receive complaints over a botched up cowboy job, and after all it will save me from all those criticisms in the future.

The actual concert footage is over 2 hours

It kicks off with ‘Bari Door Se Aaye Hain’ and ends with ‘Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Piyar Tera’

Muhammad Rafi is wearing a white suit on stage

I leave you now with peace and prosperity for the future!

  24. altaf hussain says:

MUHAMMAD RAFI – LIVE IN CONCERT

Muhammad Rafi was an outstanding singer and one of the most influential playback singers that our part of the world has ever produced, a voice which captured millions of heart’s and whose songs touched all generations.

This is the second time that I am going to comment about the master, who I had the privilege as a child to watch on stage at Bradford’s St George’s Hall, West Yorkshire [UK]. I actually grew up listening to his melodious voice as it soared all around me, whether I was watching a movie or listening to the radio set.

There came a time in my life when I was just ten years old, that I got the chance of watching Muhammad Rafi [The Legend] live on stage and in person performing live to a captivated audience. I had to be forced to go by one of my family friends who had bought 2 tickets for us both, so he literally had to twist my arm into going with him.

However whilst attending the gig I was totally baffled at what I had just experienced on stage, he was right ahead of me… yes Muhammad Rafi Sahab singing live. He kicked off the show with ‘Bari Door Se Aaye Hain’, followed by many of his recent hits and past famous songs such as ‘Hum Bekhudi Main Sanam’, ‘Parda Hai Parda’, ‘Hum To Chale Pardes’, ‘Kiya Hua Tera Vaada’, ‘Sar Par Topi Lal Rumal’, ‘O Duniya Ke Rakhwale’, ‘Punjabi track’, and some other hits.

It’s been a long time now and for a ten year old it’s very hard to remember, but I never ever forgot that memorable night as some of it’s contents were captured onto one of those old movie cameras. Which were later distributed onto vhs tapes in the 80’s and sold for ridiculous high prices to anyone interested in buying a copy.

My dear father bought himself a copy of that recording which I’ve watched innumerable times over the last 25 years or so, but my vhs tape is failing me now in 2007. So I am going to have it’s contents transferred onto dvd format, once I manage to grab myself a good machine… it’s been over 2 months now since my last post in December 2006, but would you believe it – I’m still looking for one.

Once it’s been transferred entirely all onto dvd quality format, I can then distribute it by offering it to any buyers who will be interested in buying themselves a rare recording of the legendary Muhammad Rafi live in concert. Before all that I would like to put some clips on you tube first, just to give you a small little taste of what’s to come in the near future.

You may email me whenever you have the time

ONLY A SENSELESS PERSON CAN COMPARE KISHORE WITH RAFI SAAB. WHAT ABOUT THE SOUTH INDIANS? WHY ALL PEOPLE SELECT RAFI TO COMPARE ANYONE? THATS BECAUSE RAFI IS THE ULTIMATE STANDARD. SOUTH INDIANS LOVE SP BALA AND MANY SAY THAT HE IS BETTER THAN RAFI AND MANY DONT EVEN CONSIDER KISHORE AS SINGER! BUT SP BALA SAID THAT HE WAS NOT EVEN HALF WAY CLOSE TO RAFI. ALL LOVE RAFI- THE TRUE SINGER- THE TRUE VOICE.

I ASK THE GUYS BEHIND THIS WEBSITE, ‘HOW CAN I SEND MY REPLY OR MESSEGES IN THE RAFI-KISHORE SAGA SECTION?’ I WANNA SEND MY COMMENTS. SO GIVE ME A CHANCE, PLZ.

  37. Yunus M Shariff says:

    Hello Everyone,

This interview is a rare gem. Having heard so many songs by this great luminary of Indian film music, I was eager to know how he would sound when he spoke. I must say, if I was in admiration of Rafi Sahab -the singer par excellence, I am simply in awe of Rafi Sahab the man -an epitome of modesty.

When I heard him speak for the first time in this interview, I was struck by the humbleness in his voice. A voice to die for, a voice that continues to enchant millions even today and to learn that this voice is filled with such simplicity, was a refreshing truth for me.

I am impressed by the sheer greatness of a man who sings like a star, but that star never let the razzle-dazzle of his professional career drown out the voice of the artist.

I have always heard Rafi Sahab sing with voice of a maestro and I today I have heard him speak with the voice of an angel.

I feel truly blessed! Thanks a millions people!

Kudos to everyone responsible in uploading this interview online.

    Ciao,
    Yunus.

Its a masterpiece, hats off to the people who made this interview available on the net. Rafi saab, undoubdetly has the divine voice and equally humble personality. I would like to tell you all that among those 25, 26 K songs, he has sung some regional songs also. He has sung some punjabi songs as he was from Punjab and some Marathi songs as well. He was such a versatile person. Its impossible to figure out his best song, they all are best of the best’s even now. Although HE is not with us anymore, but the treasure in term of songs / voice which he has left, will always be with us. I would like you all to make others know what RAFI SAAB was. His death annivarsary is on 31 July, you all know what to do.
