Totally Mast – Mast Baharon Ka Main Aashiq

© mohdrafi.com

The song ‘Mast Baharon Ka Main Ashiq‘ belongs to a very successful film titled Farz which was released in 1967. The plot is rather far fetched – it is about a secret agent who is assigned to investigate and report on the murder of another fellow spy and solve a very critical mystery involving some very dangerous criminals. Whilst on this superbly important mission, the spy finds time to fall in love with a very pretty girl. Luckily or unluckily for him, the girl’s father seems to be one of the criminals he is after.

Jeetendra, Aruna Irani, Babita in Farz

You might say the plot stinks, but in 1967, it did not. Though it was a slow starter, it sure did pick up after a couple of weeks. This is attributed to the really popular songs which featured in the film, one of them being Mast Baharon Ka main Ashiq. It’s amazing what one single song can do for a film and all those involved – not only did it help in the reversal of the film’s fate, it also catapulted the hero of the film, Jeetendra to instant fame. All thanks to Rafi Sahab! He has done the vocals and has played a major hand in creating the superstar named Jeetendra. This song has been done so well by him – it has made his voice immortal. Also, in this song he varies from his studiedly conventional songs to something really wild and the “cuckoo” really is something delightful.

This was the song that gave him his jumping jack image – which stands even today. In the song, you see a very energetic Jeetendra prancing about with a very svelte Aruna Irani. They get so carried away that at one point in the song he pulls her out from between his legs! In those days, this was a rather daring and sexy move. Whilst we are recounting how important this song was for Jeetendra, how can we forget mentioning that this is the song which first featured his famous white shoes?

The music for the song has been composed by Lakshmikant Pyarelal and they have not disappointed in the least. In fact, it is one of their most famous creations. It has a little bit of swing, jazz and Bollywood – a cocktail which seems to worked extraordinarily. A rather long song, you won’t know where the time flew because the music has been so beautifully and perfectly composed. And kudos to the pair for the wonderfully and strategically placed “cuckoo” in the song.

Laxmikant Pyarelal provided music to the movie Farz

To accompany the great music, lyrics were provided by Anand Bakshi. It is indeed needless to say how well the lyrics fit the character and song – a match made in Bollywood heaven. It just personifies the hero’s mood and is an excellent example of Anand Bakshi’s talent.

All in all, a song which achieved fame and success for all those who helped create it. Beautifully done and a soon to be collector’s special for its beauty.

  34. P. Haldar says:

I want to share an interesting anecdote that I heard from one of my friends. This was in the mid 60s and Rafi was scheduled to sing at a concert in Kolkata. Kolkata, as you might be aware, is full of fanatics of every kind and for whatever reason a “soda bottle” fight broke out before Rafi was about to come on stage. This form of fight is quite dangerous as carbonated bottles of soda water are hurled at people and the bottles break in mid-air. Anyway, just about when the fight had reached its crescendo, Rafi crooned “cuckoo” and the crowd became silent in a split second. And then began “Mast baharon ka mai ashiq…”

In another concert, which I actually attended, police had to resort to lathi charge because hundreds of fans wanted to touch Him at least once. And while Rafi was singing, fans started throwing coins, much to the consternation of the MC Amin Sayani, who kept saying, “Paisa mat phekiye, Rafi saab ka shir toot jayega.” Surprisingly enough, the man at the centre was totally oblivious of what was going on, delivering one song after another with equal ease.

To this list of Jeetendra and Rafi, we should also add CARAVAN with RD, ROOP TERA MASTANA with LP (remember ‘Bade Bewafa Hain Yeh Husnawale’), MAA AUR MAMTA with LP, DEEDAR-E-YAAR with LP, AASHA with LP, etc. Well, the list is endless.

  37. Prakash Shah says:

There are numerous number of songs rafi saahab sang for Jeetendra and we people only praise a hit films song of hit films but music director always try to give his best every time and same way singer like rafiji always served his best each times but some of them remain not so popular and i put them into rare category and Believe me that type of rare songs gives more pleasant experiance of thespian rafi . rafiji with jeetu are par excell in golden jubilee hit like farz and jigri dost ,himmat, humjoli, jeene ki raah, but combo even eually better in semi/silver jubilee likejawab with lp, in yaar mera with sj (remember ? ” Dar lage to gaana gaa”) and in waaris with rd – kabhi kabhi aisa bhi to hota hai zindagi men… etc.etc.

  40. Ajay P says:

This song has made Jeetendra a “STAR”..After this Jeetendra never looked back. Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s music was outstanding. LP not only consolidated their position but also went on to get the No 1 position in the film industry. “FARZ” was a Golden Jubilee Hit movie of 1967.

  41. Raajkumar Akela says:

A great team-work of Anand Bakshi, Laxmikant-Pyarelal and no doubt above all Rafi Saab. “Mast Baharon Ka Mai Aashiq..” is as fresh as it was in 1967. If I am not wrong, it is Rafi Saab’s magical voice that keeps all his songs very fresh and lovable.

  42. A S MURTY says:

Great article and also subsequent comments, in particular those of Mr. Binu Nair and Mr. Gurumurthy. LP-Anand Bakshi-Mohd Rafi-Lata Mangeshkar was the biggest combination and they have given us hundreds of evergreen melodies. Simply unforgettable ones. Reg. the Rafi Academy and the Newsletters. Please enrol us for the newsletter and if required we shall contribute for its publication.

  43. mohamed parvez says:

i would like to mention another song from farz tum se o haseena kabi mohabat na mene karni thi also song from humjoli tik tik mera dil bole both are disco song both are very well suited rafi saabs voice with jeetendra both songs are superb songs both are popular even today

  44. Prakash Shah says:

Rafiji and jeetendra were highly popular combination for producers/Directors/distributors in late 60s . i agreed that after farz jeetubhai got fame name and stardom but one should not forget GUNAHOKADEVTA song Hum ko to bad naam kiya hai aur kise badnaam karogi By Rafiji (Solo) and picturised on jeetu and Rajshri (V.shantaram’s daughter) with whom jeetendraji made a pair in geet gaaya pathorene .
HUM KO TO BARBAAD KIYA HAI:-
This particular song by rafiji was the first time for debut star jeetu but if you get chance to listen any where you can blindly say that it would be picturised on jeetendra only-this type of quality only shows in Rafiji vocal .not only that but till last he specially mould his voice differently for Dilip kumar,Sunil dutt,Rajendra kumar,Shami kapur,Dharmendra,Jeetendra,Rishi kapur, Joy mukharji, visvajit,Navin nischal to Amitabh,Mehmood, and lastbut not least Johny walker.

  45. H.V.GURU MURTHY says:

Great news about the rafi foundation and the newsletter. Regarding the song from Farz, in the late sixties we had a great team of Director Ravi Nagaich, MD LP, Actor Jeetendra and of course, Singer Rafi. They gave apart from Farz, Jigri Dost and Himmat, which also had beautiful songs. Just recall from “Jigri Dost” – ‘Phool Hai Baharon Ka’, ‘Mere Desh Me’, ‘Raat Suhani Jaag Rahi Hai’ and the evergreen hit ‘Dil Me Kya Hai’ and from “Himmat” – ‘Dhas Gayi’, ‘Ae Shukar Ke Too Hai Ladka’ and ‘Maan Jayiye’. “Farz” apart from the two solos mentioned by Rafi fans in the above article also had a popular duet of Rafi with Suman – ‘Tumse O Hasina’, which had a wonderful western dance by Jeetendra something unique in those days.

  46. rajinbabu says:

till now iwas under the impression that this song belonged to late70s or early 80s.

  47. binus2000 says:

Laxmikant Pyarelal came out with something new each time they
    entered the recording studios. L & P both were m u s i c fanatics
from childhood and they have learnt music from their childhood. In
fact , there are no composers today who have the deepest knowledge
    in music except shri p y a r e l a l .
and today he has graduated in to bigger things. he is composing
a symphony for the british people.
T o make the story little short L & P works are great works of art
    – like that of mohd rafi saab – who was god gifted and initiated in
to the music field from early childhood.
Farz the film was a ” golden jubilee hit ” thanks to the music and
    rafi saabs v o c a l s .
In short, rafi saab was and is an institution by himself who has made
    the carreers of innumerable people.
this is the reason why many rafi fans gathered at rafi saabs
resting place in Juhu , Santacruz , on Sunday 13th May, and offered
floral tributes and officially launched the rafi foundation in a meeting
at the nearby garden – where a landmark and ancient aeroplane
stands now , which the common man can enter at a nominal fee
    of rupee o n e.
It is decided to bring out a newsletter every two months and the
first issue will be on July 31, 07.
    This will be a r a f i saab special.
The newsletter will publish articles on rafi saab, music and indian
    arts.
More details of the rafi foundation will be mentioned herein: but
please give the foundation – support by few words to my e.mail.

Nice and interesting article, this song from a film called FARZ in 1967 was such a big hit at its time, and Rafi Saheb sang it with full stamina, and the song was always at the top in Binaca Geetmala, which was presented by Ameen Sayani on every wednesday night at 8 pm. Even today this song is heard in many houses. Another birthday song from FARZ – “Baar bar din yeh aaye…,” is also enjoyable even this day and is played in every birthday function. Rafi saheb was just superb, no words to describe here.
