Rafi contemporaries honoured

The SAD-BJP organised a cultural memorial function at the native village of legendary playback singer Mohmmad Rafi, here today. Mr Navjot Singh Sidhu, BJP MP, who was present, among others, announced a grant of Rs 21 lakh for the development of the village and the Majitha constituency.

Without speaking much about the singer, Mr Sidhu, in his typical style, lashed out Congress leaders for neglecting the development of the Majha region.

The BJP MP, Mr Dara Singh, along with others, honoured some of the contemporaries of Mohmmad Rafi, including Bakshish Singh Samra, Kundan Singh Samra and Gurbax Singh Gill.

Earlier, the Mohmmad Rafi Memorial Society, led by actor Hardip Gill and his wife Anita Devgan, organised a day-long mela here on February 26.

hi pawanji,no wonder in hearing that the bjp mp had not mention a sinlgle word about rafi saab when he honoured rafis contemporaries.through out his singing career rafi saab had not got due or deserving honour from the autorities.which ever govt may in power they had not heed any attention in paying rafi saab deserving awards to him.what to say more even when the the news of his death spread ,indira gandhi at that times priminister had not send a not of condolence to his familily.isee ka naam duniya….

truely…. Rafi Saab ia a Legend with all the NAVRATNAS blessed by God.
by Navratnas , here i mean …… the human emotions of Passion / Love / Sacrifice / Non Egoistic / Generous / down to earth / versatile / Pious / SelfContented……… the above is in reference to the nature of Rafi Saab which i have come across in several articles written on this Genius…

i was only 7 when Rafi Saab left for his heavenly abode, but remember my family members being a vivid fan of this legendry singer. & i also grew up with the same feelings for Rafi Saab…….. indeed am blessed as well to be a part of the family of Rafi Saab ( i would say all fans of Rafi Saab are a part of his own family)

the conversation can go on & on ……… but there is one thing i want to say about Rafi saab is that he a legend / a miracle of God made only once. there are no replacements to the Original Legendry & versatile Singer ….there may be copy cats or imitators using his style of singing but as there is only one Sun whcih is a source of Light providing evolution in Earth , the same way there is ONLY ONE RAFI SAAB THAT GOD HAS MADE who is a boon to the Indian Film / Music Industry & to Humanity ………….. Originals Can never be REPLACED ………….

Rafi Saab has competitors even today afert 28 years of his death ……… wherein when some singers of his time are just pampered by media attention Rafi Saab does not need any media publicity talking about his achievements , the songs rendered by him are more than enough for even a common man to understand the importance of this great Singer whose value cant be guessed by media attention or monetary benefits

    My dear friends !
Today is 31st July…an inauspicious day for all the music lovers.
Today, in 1980, we lost our beloved singer Padmashree Mohammad
Rafi Sahab. He was not less than an angel.
Let us remember him on this day and pray for his divine soul !
May God bless his soul eternal peace in the heaven !!!

Mohammad Rafi: Who wouldn’t admire him?
My friend, a nice human being and also a committed Jan Sanghi, recently said in an argument that Muhammad Rafi was one man he idolised despite his own distaste towards Muslims in his teenage years.

‘I don’t think any other Muslim has been loved, admired and heard so much in this country’, he said and I couldn’t agree more.

When we talk about Muslims who were and are role models, we hardly remember Rafi these days. The most popular playback singer ever, Rafi’s melodious voice has enchanted, enamoured and lifted the moods of millions everday for the last five decades. From 1946 to 1980 Rafi Sahab reigned over the Bombay film industry. Across the vast landscape of this country, wherever you go you will surely hear Rafi’s voice from radios at the streetside shops and homes. It is generally believed that there can never be a second Rafi. A great singer and a great human being, Rafi Sahab helped innumerable needy persons. There used to be a queue outside his house and he handed over the envelopes containing Rs 100 or Rs 200 without asking anybody’s name. He was born in 1924 in Punjab and passed away in 1980.

When he passed away, Gulzar wrote:

    Kahta hai koi
    Dil gaya, Dilbar chala gaya
    Sahil hai pukarta
    Samandar chala gaya
Jo baat sach hai kahta nahin koi
Ki is dunia se mauseequi ka payambar chala gaya

Rafi was exemplary as a professional and human being. I think his voice is absolutely beautiful and sweeter than anything I’ve heard since after him. God rest his soul in peace.

The following is a news clip from Central Chronicle dated Aug. 1 st. 2005. Any follow ups?
Mumbai, July 31 Maharashtra government will recommend to the Centre to confer the country’s highest civilian award, the ‘Bharat Ratna’, to legendary singer Mohammed Rafi posthumously.

On July 29, a delegation of Sahitya Sangeet Kala Akadami met Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in this regard.

“The chief minister said he has instructed his office to strongly recommend the case of Rafi for the Bharat Ratna,” BJP MLA Babruvan Khandade told reporters on Saturday.

The Akadami members staged a two-day sit-in at Azad Maidan in Mumbai demanding that the Centre confer the ‘Bharat Ratna’ on Rafi, who died on this day in 1980.

  18. P.Narayanan says:

Very nice to note the article on my favourite Rafi Sahabs village near Amritsar. It is long time waiting for his huge fans as we are expecting either Punjab govt/Maharastra govt or the Central govt to install special Prize on Rafi Sahabs name to be given every year to the most deserving Singer/Musuc director/Lyricist/Director in the Bollywood. Only Madhya Pradesh govt is doing something sensible. Secondly the Central Govt should speed up and take decision on honouring Rafi Sahab with Bharat Ratna and Dada sahab Phalke award posthumously.
In Mumbai and in Amrisar Bust/Statue of Rafi Sahab should be installed soon and Rafi Sahabs house where he lived and the cemetry where he was laid to rest should be declared national heritage centre.
Can anyone tell me who were all honoured with Dada Saheb Phalke award ? I think you may get few surprises who dont deserve the award.

Yes indeed his songs are immortal, once you listen, fends himself in different world. He was a total package with stunningly absolute beautiful voice. Music directors and poets were lucky to have his immortal voice and same way Rafi Sahib was also very lucky to have top profesional music directors and top class poets(writers). And above all we are all lucky to have this super package in our life time. There will not be another RAFI SAHIB.

It was my great dream to meet rafi sahib and go to india, but he passed way. My Almighty God forgive his sins and place him in heavan. AMIN.

  22. KS Ramachandran says:

Mohd Rafi was a great singer and I am afraid there will not be anyone in the years to come to match his unique combination of voice, range expression and above all that voice timbre par excellence and a cut above the rest. I would like to go further to Lataji’s remark (that “eaise gayak baar baar janam nahi lete”) by saying that “eaise gayak kabhi janam nahi lenge”. I personally miss his voice even after 25 long years. I have grown with his voice and will remain a great dvotee and slave to rafi sahabs golden vocal chord!!
