The Rafi-Kishore saga

The following article appeared in The Statesman,Calcutta, on Aug.7 th 2005. It will give more food for thought to the ongoing debate about the Rafi personality and magic - Mohan Flora .

Mohd. Rafi was the greatest playback singer, asserts Ranjan Das Gupta as he pays tribute on the melody kings 25th death anniversary. Rafi was a classically trained singer while Kishore was naturally endowed with excellent resonance. The latter was a versatile genius, singer, music director, actor, writer and director all rolled into one. Both were proficient singers but had separate individual styles.

In the 1950s Rafi literally ruled the roost. He was the most favoured singer for veteran composers like Naushad, S.D. Burman, Shanker Jaikishan, Madan Mohan while Kishore was preferred by S.D. Burman and Salil Choudhury who was playback mainly for Dev Anand and his own films. Rafi on the other hand could balance his melodious voice for diverse stars like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Guru Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Shammi Kapoor.

It is an astonishing fact that O.P. Nayar used Rafi to sing for Kishore Kumar the unforgettable tune Man Mora Bawra in Ragini in 1957. Shanker Jaikishan also had Rafi to sing Ajab Hai Dastan in Shararat in 1958. Says record museum owner Vinod Santhalia, It is simply amazing. Imagine Mohd. Rafi sang for Kishore Kumar in films Kishore himself acted.

Shanker Jaikishan commented, No doubt Kishore Kumar is a good singer. He sang beautifully for me in Rangoli. But Ajab Hai Dastan was simply not Kishores cup of tea. The mukhdas and antaras required a singer of Rafis range and classical background.

Although Kishore Kumar felt bad about this, he could only marvel at Rafis brilliant rendering of the two songs. Rafi characteristically remarked, No one else except Kishore could sing Dukhi Man Mera in Funtoosh so well.

Salil Choudhury was not favourably inclined towards Rafi at one point of time, but even he was compelled to use Rafi for the unforgettable Tootey Huey Khuabo Nay in Madhumati and Koi Soney Ke Dil Wala in Maya and confess that Rafi was indeed peerless.

It is generally known that Rafi and Kishore went through a bad patch in their relationship. Yet it is also true that both liked and respected each other. S.D. Burman openly admitted to Kishore that the three solos in Guide by Rafi could not be matched by any singer. On Dev Anands special request, he composed the Kishore-Lata super hit duet Gata Rahe Mera Dil for Guide. Similarly, Rafis numbers in Teen Deviyan and the haunting duet with Lata Mangeshkar in Jewel Thief were far superior to the Kishore numbers in these films.

In the late 60s when R.D. Burman composed the melody for Tum Bin Jaaun Kahan in Pyar Ka Mausam, he experimented the same solo with both Rafi and Kishore. True, Kishore sang this number by melodiously incorporating his inimitable yodelling. But in the romantic number, Rafi scored over Kishore in melody.

The 60s was also considered Rafis decade though Kishore matured considerably as a singer during this period. The Jungle Mein Mangal number Woh Din Ke Baat Sharan Karo had both Rafi and Kishore together but is somehow not remembered that well. But Shanker Jaikishans Hanste Gate Jahan Se Guzar in Andaz by Rafi quite eclipsed Kishores entire Zindagi Ek Safar in 1971.

Madan Mohan also used both Rafi and Kishore in the song Yu Na Sharma for Parwana in 1972. Kishore sang the happy rendition for hero Navin Nischal. But there was Rafi again to do full justice to the Are Hansnewale, the melancholic aspect of the same song for Amitabh Bachchan.

In the 1970s the Kishore Kumar wave took the Hindi film music by storm and was backed by R.D. Burman. Some critics felt R.D was partial to Kishore and avoided using Rafi. The Rafi Kishore duet Yaadon Ki Barat from the film with the same title in 1973 turned out to be a superhit. But it cannot be categorised either as an exclusive Rafi or a Kishore gem for both sang in perfect harmony.

Subsequently, R.D. Burman opted for Rafi again after four years as no other singer could have rendered so skillfully Chand Mera Dil and Kya Hua in Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin; that too in a film with many Kishore Kumar superhits like Mil Gaya and Aa Meri Jaan.

When Rafi sang Darde Dil for Laxmikant Pyarelal in Karz in1980 based on a single note, he proved melody was indeed God-gifted to him, remembers upcoming singer Sujan Bose. Kishores Ay Mere Umar Ke and Ek Hasina Thi could not touch that level. The same can be said for Rajesh Roshan’s Yarana where Rafi’s Aare Re Aisa Tarana completely surpassed Kishore’s Sara Zamana and Tere Jaisa.

Mohd. Rafi left for his heavenly abode on 31 July, 25 years ago. Remembers author Nabaran Bhattacharya, The photo of a silent, sad and grief-struck Kishore in the newspapers portrayed very well that no one except him understood what an irreparable loss had taken place in Indian film music.

As Kishore himself said when Jagjit Singh criticised the Rafi gharana, How dare these so-called ghazal singers criticise an icon that Manna Dey, Mukesh and I dare not criticise. Rafi was unique.

Dear Rashid Khan and other friends,

Regarding the live concerts of Rafi Sahab, the most popular version available is “Live Round the World Vols.1&2”. Now Music India Online has included both these in the Compilations category. A few other songs are available in Mr. Abu Parker’s web site. Earlier, Music India had Rafi’s live performance of the songs like “Laal Chadi” (in an amazingly different style), “Nain lad Jaive” and, so on. I am also very keen to know more about his live concerts. His stage version of “Mujhe Duniya Waalon” sounds very contextual [with all the embellishments] than the studio version.

A Desire to Meet Rafi Saab

Some time back I had written an article which is based on the what most fans would think and feel about Rafi’s voice. Unfornately it did not get published on the web, may be it is too personal and unrealistic. I am sharing it with you all.

This is an expression of feelings (Jazbaat) of a fan about an artist. There are many Rafi fans all over the world that may have the fortune to see him sing live or meet him personally. Perhaps there are many fans that never had the opportunity or the privilege to see him or listen to him sing live or meet in person. I am one of them, who had the desire to meet Rafi Saab for several years; knowing that Rafi Saab is no more with us.

It was the year 1983 that made me a fan of Rafi Saab. After the appreciation of his voice my desire to meet Rafi in person grew. The first thought that came to my mind was that I just missed Rafi Saab by 3 years. Possibly if I could have come to this world a few years earlier, I could have certainly met Rafi Saab. Whichever magazine I came across containing an article on Rafi, I would read it with out fail. Whichever song I heard him sing whether Classical, Sad, Happy, Romantic, Devotional, etc. it provided me a new dimension of his voice. Every Music composer has a very peculiar style of composition. Rafi’s voice could meet the challenge of any dimension for any Music Composer. In other words Rafi’s voice was a solution provider to any style of singing.

As my interest in Rafi’s voice grew a desire of having a poster of Rafi Saab in my room developed accordingly. In the mid eighties there were many posters available of famous Bollywood & Hollywood actors, but one can’t imagine a poster of Rafi Saab at that time. Almost after a year of search finally God gave me an opportunity. In 1985 I use travel from my place in Juhu to Santacruz by bus route 231 for my coaching classes in the evening. The bus use to pass through one the photo studios at S V Road, where I could get a short glimpse of Rafi Saab framed color photograph for a moment. I decided to go to the photo Studio and ask for a copy. Initially the studio proprietor refused, but later he agreed to give me one copy. I purchased a photo frame along with Rafi Saab photograph. Experiencing one such case the proprietor later removed Rafi Saabs photograph from display. Possibly he thought there could be many more like me to follow.

Two years later I went to Pune to pursue Engineering in the field of Industrial Electronics. I took Rafi Saab’s photograph along with most of his songs. Doing engineering was going through a lot of stress and mental pressure during exams. Many of my colleagues were addicted to smoking or drinking in order release stress and tension. In my case it was to listen to Rafi songs for some time. This helped me to reduce stress and recharged me to put me back to work. Fortunately it helped me to such an extend, that I did not develop any bad habit as such. In other words my attitude was always positive through out my tenure. His voice literally acted as a moral support to me during my Engineering.

During my Engineering tenure I watched a Science fiction Hollywood film “Back to the Future – The Time Machine”. The movie is in 3 parts directed by Steven Spielberg. In this film a machine has been shown which can take an individual from the present to the past or present to the future, that’s why the name – The Time Machine. Though it is an imagination of the filmmaker, but considering my desire to meet Rafi Saab personally, the first thing that came to my mind was, I wished if such a machine existing in reality. Possibly I could have gone back into the golden era and met Rafi Saab and return back to the present age.

There is another experience, which I would like to share. This was in 1986; I was once having fever 101 ° F temperature and was feeling quiet restless & irritated. I decided listen to Rafi Saabs songs, thinking that it would at least divert my attention. After listening to songs “O Duniya Ke Rakhwale”, “Mann Tadpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj”, “Madhuban Mein Radhika”, “O Door Ke Musafir” & “Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki” my mind felt so relaxed that my temperature came down to 99 ° F. One could call it a false claim, but it is a reality. So one can understand the healing touch Rafi Saab’s voice can provide.

Looking from scientific point of view, music is used in practice to cure illness & disease. It is known as Music Therapy. A mode of treatment, which may not be very famous in India, but is very popular in the Western & Far East countries.

These were my experiences and thoughts as a teenager. Perhaps things have changed with time. Today I am in my mid thirties working in a Multi National firm in Mumbai. My teenage innocence has become a past glory and exists only in my memories, but still my appreciation for Rafi Saab is very much the same as before. Perhaps, I do not think any more of meeting Rafi Saab personally, but listening to his songs even today, there is just only one voice that comes out from my heart.

Tu Kahin Aas Paas Hai Dost

Dear Anmol,Narayan,Anon,Sagar,Nair,Unknown and others of the Rafi Parivar,
The best part about Rafisaab is that the more you delve into his records/songs the more you find out and there is even more still left. His repertoire/list of songs is like an ocean. The more you learn the lesser you know. Take for example the blockbuster Pakeezah(1971) music by Ghulam Mohammad. It had a super duper hit Rafi-Lata duet ,”Chalo Dildar Chalo Chand Ke Paar Chalo”. Do you know that there were two other good Rafi songs which remained unreleased due to paucity of “space”. TWO CLASSICS! One was a Rafi-Shamshad Begum chorus and the other was a super solo which went as follows:
Yeh Kis Ki Aankhon Ka Noor Ho Tum (Unreleased)
    Film Name: Pakeezah
    Year: 1971
    Singer(s) Mohd Rafi
    Lyricist:
    Musician(s): Ghulam Mohammed
    Lyrics
Yeh Kis Ki Aankhon Ka Noor Ho Tum?, (2)
Yeh Kis Ke Dil Ka Qaraar Ho Tum?, (2)
Yeh Kis Ki Aankhon Ka Noor Ho Tum..
Mujeh Yeh Maloom Horaha Hai, (2)
Ke Jaisa Mera Hi Pyaar Ho Tum (2),
Yeh Kis Ki Aankhon Ka Noor Ho Tum..

    Sambhalo Zulphon Ki Yeh Ghatayen,
    Kahin Musaphir Bhatak Na Jaayen,
    Sambhalo Zulphon Ki Yeh Ghatayen,
    Kahin Musaphir Bhatak Na Jaayen,
Behek Na Jaaye Kahin Zamana, (2)
Ke Ik Nashili Bahaar Ho Tum, (2)
Yeh Kis Ki Aankhon Ka Noor Ho Tum..

Kabhi Jhuki Tum Nigaah Ban Kar,
Kabhi Uthi Tum DIl Se Aah Ban Kar,
    Aaha Ban Kar..
Khatak Rahi Ho Kabhi Jigar Mein, (2)
Kabhi Kaleje Ke Paar Ho Tum, (2)
Yeh Kis Ki Aankhon Ka Noor Ho Tum..

Garaz Qayamat Se Kam Nahin Ho,
Koi Bhi Ho Tum, Bahut Haseen Ho,
    Bahut Haseen Ho,
    Tumhein Hamara Salaam Pahunche, (2)
Ke Husn Ka Shahkaar Ho Tum, (2)
Yeh Kis Ki Aankhon Ka Noor Ho Tum..
Mujeh Yeh Maloom Horaha Hai, (2)
Ke Jaisa Mera Hi Pyaar Ho Tum (2),
Yeh Kis Ki Aankhon Ka Noor Ho Tum..

Anybody knows how to get to the above two songs?Goldmine hai, yaar!

    Dear Anon/Nair/Narayanan/Sagar/Mohan

Thanks a lot for your prompt replies.

    Dear Rashid,

This is indeed a great work. I have a few queries.

    1. The following films in the list are actually Punjabi Films. Possibly can be categoried separately.

Films like Vilayati Babu (1981), Chann Pardesi (1980), Jatt Punjabi (1979), Jindri Yar Di (1978), Santo Banto (1976), Yamla Jatt (1976), Teri Meri Ik Jindri (1975), Bhagat Dhanna Jatt (1974), Dukh Bhanjan Tera Naam (1974), Nanak Naam Jahaz Hai (1969), Chaudhary Karnail Singh (1960), Do Lachhiyan (1960), Posti (1950), Gul Baloch (1944).

    2. Just wanted to know the songs sung by Rafi Saab in the following Hindi Films.

Sharmilee (1971), Mera Naam Joker (1970), Raat Aur Din (1967), Upkar (1967).

    mohanflora Says:

    Good attempt, Rashid bhai,
please keep it up. However, going thru the list, even though I am no expert, there are a lot (in fact, a vast number of films in Hindi) missing. I will add in a few when I have the time. While browsing thru some of the RD Burman films that are missing from the list:
    Dil ka Raja -1972
    Raksha-1981
    Takkar-1980
    Shiva ka Insaaf-1985
    Nikamma=1983
    Aan aur Shaan=1984
    Faisla-1988
    Gehra Zakhm-1981
    Biwi-O-Biwi-1981
    Bulandi-1980
    Phir Wohi Raat-1980
    Benaam-1974
Mind you, they are some of just RD Burman songs which are not on the list. As I write this, some more of Rafisaab’s RD list are coming up. More of that later..Lots of research yet to be done. But,as a Rafian, I would request you to please keep up the good work. Full support, always ! Rafisaab’s repertoire is VAST! Much much more than 533 films as listed above!

  18. 408
    mohanflora Says:

His mother-tongue being Punjabi, it was natural that Rafi was the first choice for any Punjabi film song. In fact , the first ever fim song ever recorded by Rafisaab was for a Punjabi film”Gul Baloch”. Initially, he had a very Punjabi accent and some of his early songs bear proof. It is said that Naushadji specially had pundits brought in from Banaras to “modify” his accent for the Baiju Bawra songs.During his long career in Hindi films Rafi saab sang many Hindi-Punjabi mixture songs, songs like “main jat yamla pagla diwana” but only two purely Punjabi songs in Hindi films come to my mind- one is “Ki main jhooth boliya” in Raj Kapoor’s Jagte Raho music Salil Chowdhury and the other is “Zara Ankhiyan La Laiye Zara Khushiyan Mana Laiye,”from the 1972 Vinod Khanna starrer Parchhaiyan music R D Burman(surprise!!!). Two Bengali MD’s giving Punjabi songs? Does any other song come to mind, Anmol,Narayana,Sagar,Nair and other friends?

    Dear Narayanan!

It’s the link to an inteview with Jithin Shyam appeared in the daily “The Hindu” dt 1st August 2002 (Metro Plus Kochi). The link works. Anyway, I am pasting an excerpt.

Rafi was always special for Keralites. It was no surprise then that a group of Malayali producers wanted him to sing a Malayalam song in their film `Thaliritta Kinakkal’. “I met Rafi Saab and asked him if he could oblige with a Malayalam film for which I was the music director. He very politely told me that singing in that language was never going to be easy unless he had a few weeks to learn it. He told me that he would not be able to impart the right emotion without really understanding the meaning of the lines. I told this to the producers of the film who then insisted that Rafi Saab sing at least a Hindi song for the film. That was how the song, `Shabab loke… ‘ was included in the film, the only song the great singer has rendered for Malayalam films,'’ said Jithin.
