Rafi’s songs for other music directors

This article is written by Mr. H.V.Guru Murthy

Mohd RafiRecently I was browsing through an Article written by Mr. Raju Bharatan in the Illustrated Weekly of India of August, 1993. Mr. Bharatan highlights the songs of Rafi for unknown small time Music Directors.
It is true Rafi has sung innumerable of songs for popular and successful Music Directors like Naushad, S.D.Burman, O.P.Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan, Lakshmikanth Pyarelal, Kalyandji Anandji, R.D.Burman, Chitraguptha, Madan Mohan, C.Ramachandra, Roshan, Ravi, Usha Khanna, Salil Chaudhury, Sonik Omi, Khayyam, etc. Of course, some of the above Music Directors became successful only due to Rafi.

But Rafi has also sung plenty of songs for unknown and small time MDs. These small time MDs though did not become that much popular, but were able to give some beautiful songs with the help of Rafi. In fact, Mr. Bharatan illustrates examples of the following songs in his article and also indicates how big-hearted Rafi made these MDs by giving all time hits and spotlights Rafi’s role in keeping the small time Composers professionally alive. It is on record that Rafiji sometimes sang for just Rs. One as token fee.

“Chanda Ka Dil Toot Gaya Roney Lage Hain Sitare” from KHOJ for MD Nissar Baazami for whom he charged just Rs. One for this song though the MD was ready for Rs. 50/-.

“Daulat Ke Jhoote Nashe Main Ho Choor” from OONCHI HAVELI for MD Pandit Shivaram for Rs. 50/-.

“Tera Kaam Hai Jalna Parwaane” from PAAPI for MD S.Mohinder incidentally starring Raj Kapoor.

“Hai Has Ki Har Ek Unke” from MIRZA GAALIB for MD Ghulam Mohammed starring Bharat Bhushan.

“Tum Poochate Ho Ishq Bala” and “Allah Jaane Maula Jaane” for NAQLI NAWAB for MD Babul starring Manoj Kumar.

“Yeh Bambai Shahar Ka Bada Naam Hai” from YEH BAMBAI HAI for MD Bipin Dutta.

“Pyaar Ki Raah Dikha Duniya Ko” from LAMBE HAATH for MD G.S.Kohli.

“Nigahen Na Phero Chal Jayenge Hum” from BLACK PRINCE for MD Dulal Sen.

Mohd Rafi (with fans?)
Mohd Rafi (with fans?)

“Paas Bhaito Tabiyat Behel Jayegi” from PUNARMILAN for MD C.Arjun.

“Main To Tere Hasin Khayalon Me Kho Gaya” from SANGRAM for MD Lala-Asad-Sattar.

“Phir Woh Bhooli Si Raat Aayi Hai” from BEGAANA for MD Sapan-Jagmohan.

“Muzhe Tumse Mohabbat Hai Magar Main Keh Nahi Sakta” from BACHPAN for MD Sardar Mallick.

“Subah Na Aayi Shaam Na Aayi” from CHA CHA CHA for MD Iqbal Quraishi.

“Dono Ne Kiya Tha Pyaar Magar” from MAHUA for Sonik Omi.

“Allah Hi Allah Kar Pyaar Bhai” from PAVITRA PAAPI for MD Prem Dhawan.

Well most of the above songs, which I am able to identify were real gems. I would also like to add to the above list songs like “Taqdeer Ka Phasana” and “Tumto Pyaar Ho Sajana” from SEHRA for MD Ramlal, “Agar Main Poochun Jawaab Doge” and another duet with Lata for SHIKARI for MD G.S.Kohli, “Dilne…….. Pyaar Kiya Hai Ik Bewafase” from SHARARAT for MD Ganesh, “Woh Hum Na Thi Woh Tum Na Thi” again from CHA CHA CHA for MD Iqbal Quraishi, “Kuhu Kuhu Bole Koyaliya” a classical duet with Lata for SUVARNA SUNDARI for Southern MD Adinarayanarao, “Kahin Aisa Na Ho Tum Ajanabi” from MILAP for MD Briz Bhushan, “Dil Ka Soona Saanj Tarana Dhoondega” filmed on Shatrughan Sinha, “Zindagi Me Aaya Toofan” and “Abhi Kamsin Ho Nadaan Ho” from AAYA TOOFAN starring Dara Singh, “Meri Hasraton Ke Duniya” a duet with Krishna Kalle and solo “Apne Naam Ke Kareeb” both from RAAT KE ANDHERE MAIN. For MD Jaidev, Rafi gave in HUM DONO two solos “Main Zindagi Ka Saath” and “Kabhi Khud Pe” apart from the hit Asha duet “Abhi Na Jao Chodakar” and in ALINGAN one solo “Is Tarah Jao Nahin” and a duet with Asha “Hamare Dilko Tumne Dil Bana Diya”. “Hum Laye Hain Toofan Se” from JAGRUTI had Kavi Pradeep as MD. Two beautiful songs were picturised on actor Mehamood for SHABANAM – “Yeh Teri Sazagi” and “Maine Rakha Hai Mohabbat”. Another hit but unknown song was “Haseena Wadiyon….. Phizaonse Kehdo Hawaonse Kehdo Mera Yaar Mera Pyaar Leke Aaya Hai”, I think it was from LAAL BANGLA having another Mukeh hit “Chanda Ko Kya Maloom Chahata Hai Use Koi Chakor”. “Banaye Ja Bigade Ja Bigade Ja Banaye Ja” was another hit unknown song, in the sense that not much is known about the film, MD, lyricist and actor. What about “Ae Jaane Bahara Ruh Ae Chaman Pehlu Me Mere Kab Aaogi”. “Apni Aankhon Me Basakar” from THOKAR starring Baldev Khosla was another gem of a song.

Mohd Rafi with Madan Mohan, Manna Dey, Talat and Bhupinder
Mohd Rafi with Madan Mohan, Manna Dey, Talat and Bhupinder

Well, the above songs are as good as any other hit song sung by Rafi for more illustrious MDs. It is once again proven that as Mr. Bharatan pointed out in his article, for Rafi Saab, ‘song came first and money came later’. Any music lover will immediately remember all these songs sung by Rafi Saab but will take time to remember or might have even forgotten the name of the movie or the actor or the MD or the lyricist.

    mr zorawar
the rafi-asha duet dhalti jaaye raat is from a film called razia sultan. the md was lachchiram

  21. H.V.GURU MURTHY says:

    Dear Korti Saab,

True, “Mana Mere Hasin Sanam” is a beautiful song, but you will appreciate that if we start counting Rafiji’s good songs, then we may have to go for pages together.

  22. Raju Korti says:

i fail to understand why we have forgotten greats like sn tripathi. and have composers like gs kohli and iqbal quereshi composed just one or two rafi solos? gs kohli infact, made a big mark with an out and out c-grade film like adventures of robinhood. and what a marvellous song rafi crooned in maana mere hansi sanam, tu rashk-e mahtaab hai. we talk of cha cha cha and remember only subah na aayee and woh ham na the woh tum na the. but does anybody know rafi sang a breath-taking semi-classical song ek lali ghar se chali? please make it a point to listen to rafi’s astounding brilliance in dipak jalavo jyoti jagavo from sangeet samrat tansen. i can go on endlessly, but rafi is a revelation with sn tripathi’s eminently hummable hindusthani classical music.

Thanks for a nice article with good information. I would like to add one more song to the list and that is “Dhalti Jaye Raat, Kehde Dil Ki Baat” with Asha Bhonsle. I would not know the film name but the music was composed by yet another not known music director, Lachhey Ram.

Thanks to Mr. Parvez also for that good hidden videos. In fact I started watching Youtube only when I was told that Rafi Sahab’s Live footage is available there.

    Long Live Rafi Sahab !

  31. RAMAKRISHNA says:

    gurumurty garu,

your nice article. its a very nice way you have put up this article. in fact all the songs you have mentioned are of exceptional nature.

on 30th july when i was just humming the song, ‘ mujhey tumsey mohabbat hai ‘ of ” bachpan ‘ Mr binu was with me. he asked me to sing the mukhda. when i sang he was so much moved & believe me he was humming it all the time while in local train, auto & also while walking. this is the power of rafi sahab’s hypnotic rendering & I bow to Sardar Mallik jee for the rare emotional composition.

and another painful number composed by LP during their struggling days. the song was written by the-then announcer of radio ceylon Mr Shiv kumar saroj. The song is, ‘ Khamosh zindagi ko, awaaz dey raheho, tootey huey haathon mein, kyoon saaz dey rahey ho ‘ from the film ‘ naag mandir ‘.

Rafi sahab did full justice to the music directors irrespective of their popularity or fame. He took his profession as worship without being partial to any music directors.

during one of his interviews he has told that, he listens to the music directors because they are also his ‘ ustaad ‘. I have read some where that when Usha khanna was hesitating to correct him Rafi sahab understood it & told her its her duty to instruct him as he is singing under her music direction. Its probably because of this great virtue that Rafi sahab never hesitated to sing under the direction of lesser known music directors.

and finally as we see each song is a super duper hit.
