Rafi’s songs for other heroes and actors

This article is written by H.V.Guru Murthy.

Rafi Saab has sung for many heroes / comedians / character actors. But still there are certain heroes / actors with whom usually Rafiji’s songs are not associated though Rafi Saab has sung many beautiful songs for these actors. Whenever, one thinks of actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Shahshi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Sanjay, Amitabh Bachachan, Rishi Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar, Guru Dutt, Joy Mukherjee, Biswajit, etc. we can recall various songs of Rafi’s on these heroes.

But there are certain heroes whose songs are usually remembered which are sung by other Singers. For example, whenever we think of Raj Kapoor, we remember mostly Mukeshji’s songs or some times Mannadey’s songs. But there are movies in which Rafiji has also sung for Raj Kapoor. Dastaan, Nazrana, even Mera Naam Joker had Rafi songs. My favourite song of Rafi for Raj Kapoor was “Tum Hi Tum Ho Mere Jeevan Me” a duet with Lata from ‘Ek Dil Sau Afsane’.

Of course, Rafiji has sung so many songs for Rajesh Khanna, whose main play back singer was Kishore Kumar. But can anyone forget songs like Itna To Yaad Hai Muzhe, Ye Jo Chilman Hai, Pasand Aa Gayi Hai from “Memboob Ki Mehandi” or Ye Reshami Zulfe and Chup Gaye Taare Nazare from “Do Raaste”, Zamane Ne Maare from “Baharon Ke Sapne”, Akele Hain Chale Aao from “Raaj”, Gulabhi Aankhe and Muzhase Bhala Yeh from “The Train”, Sajana Saath Nibhana from “Doli”, Yunhi Tum Muzhase Baat Karti Ho from “Sachcha Zhoota”, Koi Nazarana Lekar Aaya Hun Me from “Aan Milo Sajana”, etc.

Even for Manoj Kumar, whose main play back singers were Mukesh and Mahendra Kapoor, Rafi Saab has sung songs like Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna from Shahid, Resham Ki Dori and Saajan Saajan for Saajan, Hum Pyaar Tumhe Karte Hain – Title song, Jaane Chaman from Gumnaam, Maine Ae Jaane Wafa from Bedaag, Matawali Aankhon Wale from Chote Nawab, Dil Tadape Tadapaye from Poonam Ki Raat, Pathar Ke Sanam – Title song, etc.

Similarly Rafi Saab has sung some wonderful songs for Mehmood – Khayalo Me from Gumnaam, Badkamma from Shatranj, Zindagi Muzhko Dikhade Raasta and Ajhunna Aaye Balama from Saanj Aur Savera, Maine Rakha Hai Mohabbat and Taubashikan from Shabnam, for Jhonny Walker – Ae Dil Hai Mushqil from CID, Sar Jo Ters Chakraye from Pyaasa, Gareeb Janake, for Pran - Jeena To Hai Useeka from Adhikar, for Manmohan Krishna - Tu Hindu Banega from Dhool Ka Phool, etc. Listen to Rafiji’s songs for Navin Nischol – Sun Sun Sun and Chaal Me from Sawan Bhadon, Is Dharti and Title song from Ganga Tera Paani Amrit, Jis Dinse Maine from Parwana, etc. All the songs from Aabroo for Deepak Kumar like Aapse Pyaar Hua, Har Cehra Yehan Chaand, Yeh Zindagi Hai were hits. Deepak Kumar was lucky to have two other huge hits of Rafi picturised on him in Khoj – Maine Tuzhase Kiya Hai Pyaar and Halka Halka Sa Rang Gulabi Ka. Anil Dhawan had Rafi singing for him – Badi Doorase Aaye hain Pyaar Ka and Sabke Rahte Lagta Hai Jaise from Samjhauta.

Rafiji also sang some wonderful songs for not so popular heroes like Aayi Baharo Ki Shaam, Mere Pyaar Me Tuzhe Kya Mila, Paas Baito Tabiyat Behal Jayegi, Kahin Aisa Na Ho Tum Ajnabi from Milap, Apni Aankhon Me Basakar on Baldev Khosla, etc.

While listening to the above songs, we never felt odd or thought that the singer does not suit the actor. Well, that was Rafiji’s greatness.

When Dosti won the filmfare award, there was no radio in
M.D. Laxmikants house. He used to hear his Dosti songs from
    his neighbourhood paan shop…..

    Dear fans
Mohd Rafi singed around 16 songs for Mr Bachchan I think all songs are great but when Mr Bachchan was at top all songs are super hit.
Look the greatness of Mohd Rafi that he liked the film in which he didn’t sing and like actor for who he didn’t sing much.if we speak about mr big B I think he never was famous for songs he was angry young man and he made kk songs hit and about Rajesh Khanna we know that all songs singed by Mohd Rafi are super hit.

    Kalyaniji,

Please go thru my statement again, which I reproduce, ‘”Also I do not think Amitabh did not like Rafi especially after he sang Rafiji’s hit numbers like………..”. I think I have made myself very clear that I do not repeat do not subscribe to the view that Amitabh did not like Rafi, especially after Rafi sang so many wonderful songs for Amitji. My conclusion was that Amitji should like and respect Rafi Saab, which view has been strengthened by your own observation about Amitji’s words on Rafiji in Sony Max program.

Also I do think most of the Rafians have high regard for other playback singers also like Mannadey, Mukesh, Talat, Hemant, KK, etc. which are amply borne by the comments in the web site. Our contention is that Rafiji was definitely much more versatile than other Singers, but other Singers had there own strengths and we definitely enjoyed the songs of these Singers also.

I agree to an extent with Kalyaniji only because of one more instance which i have read ,that when MD Khayyamji was composing songs for KABHI KABHI he wanted to record the songs in Mukeshjis voice which
was somewhat odd combo i.e. AMITABH BACHHAN - MUKESH.

However since Mr.Bachhan was a big star then, Khayyamji discussed this matter with Amitji before the recording, that he is planning to record the songs with Mukesh and whether he was aggraeble or had any reservations for it, but Amitji had full faith that the end result would be good and gave permission to do so.

It is needless to mention that the result was amazing. There were very few occassions when Mukeshji has sung for Amitji but the combo of

SAHIR LUDHIANVIJI - MUKESHJI - KHAYYAMJI - AMITJI along with YASHJI
    created magic.

I have read a lot of debates on this site about who is better ,Rafisahab
or Kishore Kumar but we tend to forget the other legends DARD KI AWAZ KE BETAJ BADSHAH- MUKESHJI.

I am a great fan of Rafishahab perhaps the most versatile singer of all times but we need to acknowledge the legacy others have left behind for music lovers like all of us.

    Regards

Gurumurthy sir u are right and irony u are wrong
Amitabh Bachan simply used to love our Rafi Sahab and If Rafi Sahab would have been alive for just 2 or 3 years after 1980 the Rafi Sahab Amitabh LP n Manmohan Desaijis combo would have continued like in Naseeb, Suhaag.
In a program tribute to Rafi Sahab on Sony Max with Ompuri, Amitabh Bachan recalls his dedication, professionalism and very childlike innocent nature of our Guruji Rafi sahab.
Kindly Irony do not mention any statement like Amitabh did not like Rafi Sahab by imagining somethings.

If I remember properly, ‘Subah Na Aayi’ of “Cha Cha Cha” had music by Iqbal Qureishi and not SJ.

Also I do not think Amitabh did not like Rafi especially after he sang Rafiji’s hit numbers like ‘John Jaani Janardhan’ from “Naseeb”, ‘Ek Fate Ki Baat Sunaun’ and ‘Koi Aur Duniya Me’ from “Pyaar Ki Kahani”, ‘Teri Bindiya Re’ from “Abhimaan”, ‘Patta Patta Boota Boota’ from “Ek Nazar”, ‘Are Hasnewalon’ from “Parwana”, ‘O Tumse Door Rahke’ a duet with Lata, ‘ Mile Jo’ a song with Kishore and Lata in “Kasme Waade’, etc. In fact, Amitabh has also sung with Rafiji in “Naseeb” - ‘Chal Chal Mere Bhai’.

The song “Wadiyan Mera Daman” was a Do-Pehlu song sung by both Rafi and Lata. The Rafi version was picturised on Sanjay Khan where as the Lata version was picturised on Nanda and Kashinath was just there in that scene.

RELATIVELY LESSER KNOWN ACTOR IN THE HINDI FILM INDUSTRY BUT HE WAS THE KING OF MARATHI STAGE THE GREATEST STAGE ACTOR PRODUCED BY MARATHI THEATRE EVER.

Another song which was picturised on lesser known artists

Chahunga main tujhe sanjh savere &
rahi manava dukh ki chinta kyon satati hain dook to apna sathi hai.

L-P won filmfare award for this song against the competition of Shankar Jaikishan and S.D.Burman. These songs are good example of the greatness of Rafi sahab as a playback singer and Laxmikant Pyarelal as a music director.

Not many people remember the actors who played the role of the blind and deaf man. In fact the actor who played the role of the blind man stayed at Labaug (Mumbai) where I currently reside .Although he could not take his carrer to greater heights but the composition of L-P and the playback singing of Rafisahab has made the songs of the film immortal.

That is the jadoo of L-P Rafi combo
