Rafi’s songs for other heroes and actors

Rafi Saab has sung for many heroes / comedians / character actors. But still there are certain heroes / actors with whom usually Rafiji’s songs are not associated though Rafi Saab has sung many beautiful songs for these actors. Whenever, one thinks of actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Rajendra Kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Shahshi Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Sanjay, Amitabh Bachachan, Rishi Kapoor, Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar, Guru Dutt, Joy Mukherjee, Biswajit, etc. we can recall various songs of Rafi’s on these heroes.
But there are certain heroes whose songs are usually remembered which are sung by other Singers. For example, whenever we think of Raj Kapoor, we remember mostly Mukeshji’s songs or some times Mannadey’s songs. But there are movies in which Rafiji has also sung for Raj Kapoor. Dastaan, Nazrana, even Mera Naam Joker had Rafi songs. My favourite song of Rafi for Raj Kapoor was “Tum Hi Tum Ho Mere Jeevan Me” a duet with Lata from ‘Ek Dil Sau Afsane’.
Of course, Rafiji has sung so many songs for Rajesh Khanna, whose main play back singer was Kishore Kumar. But can anyone forget songs like Itna To Yaad Hai Muzhe, Ye Jo Chilman Hai, Pasand Aa Gayi Hai from “Memboob Ki Mehandi” or Ye Reshami Zulfe and Chup Gaye Taare Nazare from “Do Raaste”, Zamane Ne Maare from “Baharon Ke Sapne”, Akele Hain Chale Aao from “Raaj”, Gulabhi Aankhe and Muzhase Bhala Yeh from “The Train”, Sajana Saath Nibhana from “Doli”, Yunhi Tum Muzhase Baat Karti Ho from “Sachcha Zhoota”, Koi Nazarana Lekar Aaya Hun Me from “Aan Milo Sajana”, etc.
Even for Manoj Kumar, whose main play back singers were Mukesh and Mahendra Kapoor, Rafi Saab has sung songs like Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna from Shahid, Resham Ki Dori and Saajan Saajan for Saajan, Hum Pyaar Tumhe Karte Hain – Title song, Jaane Chaman from Gumnaam, Maine Ae Jaane Wafa from Bedaag, Matawali Aankhon Wale from Chote Nawab, Dil Tadape Tadapaye from Poonam Ki Raat, Pathar Ke Sanam – Title song, etc.
Similarly Rafi Saab has sung some wonderful songs for Mehmood – Khayalo Me from Gumnaam, Badkamma from Shatranj, Zindagi Muzhko Dikhade Raasta and Ajhunna Aaye Balama from Saanj Aur Savera, Maine Rakha Hai Mohabbat and Taubashikan from Shabnam, for Jhonny Walker – Ae Dil Hai Mushqil from CID, Sar Jo Ters Chakraye from Pyaasa, Gareeb Janake, for Pran - Jeena To Hai Useeka from Adhikar, for Manmohan Krishna - Tu Hindu Banega from Dhool Ka Phool, etc. Listen to Rafiji’s songs for Navin Nischol – Sun Sun Sun and Chaal Me from Sawan Bhadon, Is Dharti and Title song from Ganga Tera Paani Amrit, Jis Dinse Maine from Parwana, etc. All the songs from Aabroo for Deepak Kumar like Aapse Pyaar Hua, Har Cehra Yehan Chaand, Yeh Zindagi Hai were hits. Deepak Kumar was lucky to have two other huge hits of Rafi picturised on him in Khoj – Maine Tuzhase Kiya Hai Pyaar and Halka Halka Sa Rang Gulabi Ka. Anil Dhawan had Rafi singing for him – Badi Doorase Aaye hain Pyaar Ka and Sabke Rahte Lagta Hai Jaise from Samjhauta.
Rafiji also sang some wonderful songs for not so popular heroes like Aayi Baharo Ki Shaam, Mere Pyaar Me Tuzhe Kya Mila, Paas Baito Tabiyat Behal Jayegi, Kahin Aisa Na Ho Tum Ajnabi from Milap, Apni Aankhon Me Basakar on Baldev Khosla, etc.
While listening to the above songs, we never felt odd or thought that the singer does not suit the actor. Well, that was Rafiji’s greatness.

I HAVE READ YOUR ARTICLE, AND THANKS FOR REMINDING US ONCE AGAIN THE GREATNESS OF RAFI. YES, RAFIJI SANG SO MANY SONGS FOR UNKNOWN ARTISTS AND MOST OF THE SONGS WERE HIT. OTHER SINGERS LIKE KISHORE ALSO SANG FOR UNKNOWN ONES, BUT THEY WERE NOT AS POPULAR AS RAFIJI’S WERE. I JUST REMEMBER A SONG PICTURISED ON JOHNNY WALKER SUNG BY RAFI WHICH IS AS USUAL A HIT ONE, “JAANE KAHA MERA JIGAAR GAYAA JEE…”.
ITS REALLY UNFORTUNATE THAT BIG STARS LIKE RAJESH KHANNA AND AMITABH BACHCHAN DIDN’T LIKE RAFI AS THEIR PLAYBACK SINGER. IF WE SEE RAFI’S SONGS FOR RAJESH, WE FIND THAT HIS HIT PERCENTAGE IS ALMOST EQUAL TO KISHORE’S. RAJESH KHANNA AFTER ALL LIPPED SOME OF RAFI SONGS, BUT AMITABH WAS A BLIND KISHORE FAN. I THINK HE DIDNT LIKE RAFIJI. WHAT DO TOU THINK MURTHY?

I have a good collection of old Hindi songs, especially of Mohammed Rafi which I frequently listen to. Some of the songs are so beautifully sung by Rafiji, I do not not know on whom these songs are picturised, I do not know the name of the movie, even I do not know the Music Directors, but I only know that these songs are some of Rafi’s gems and can be heard again and again.

when singer was Mohd Rafi it was not important if he is great actor or not because Mohd Rafi voice made that song hit but when the actor was a top actor mostly songs became hit,all songs singed by MOhd Rafi 4 Rajesh Khanna and mr Bachchan when there are superstar wa hit.
we should not forget that Dev Ananad was at the top when he used Mohd Rafi voice same to many more.
Asha ji using RD name as i great MD but where is SJ who made hit songs with all singers!!!!
Dear ATM SALIM as u said Sanjah Khan is well known actor u r right because of Mohd Rafi as I think and don’t forget his brother Faroz Khan for who Mohd Rafi singed some great songs when u listen to these songs you will never think that songs singed for Faroz Khan and also for some unknow actors…

the song he sang in andaaz fot raj kapoor was (hum to aapas mein bigad the hain khafa hote hain)he also sang (chale jana tum door bade shokh se huzoor, shama jali parwana aaya, hum tum yeh bahar,tera kaam hai jalna parwane, tu ladki main ladka and some more also) and my favorite is(sadqe heer tujh pe hum fakir sadqe from mera naam joker)

the actor for mastana B/w movie was Motilal I think which is same guy we saw singing (zindabad zindabaad aye mohabbat zindabaad), for mastana he sang(duniya ke sare ghamon se begana, main hoon mastana)and also more song for same movie.

I dont know when I started adoring Mohd Rafi ji’s golden voice . I have grown up listening to mom listening to his songs daily ..I dont knwo but as long as I can remember ..I think Rafi ji and lata ji blended their voices so well together that everytime she was put to sing with other singers I was like ” Kyu? ISKI AND RAFI JI KI KOI UNBAND HOGAYI HAI KYA?”!…
We Cant compare Rafi ji with other singers at all .. he was a singer born with a golden voice given to him by god .We admired him for what he delivered to his listeners .Its not how many awards he managed to retrieve during his time with the music industry but how much he had offered to the society …People REMEMBER HIM TO DATE ..HIS VOICE RINGS IN MANY EARS DAILY…NO other singers are remembered teh way Rafi ji is being remembered even after 26 years ..Now thats GREAT and THATS IS SOMETHING …..No One Can Replace Him .. thats all .. : )

Rafi Saab is the Master of the trade in playback singing . There are
scores of his songs on unknown artistes. The qawali from Adhikar
and Dharma need to be mentioned. Dharma was a bore movie
but the qawali towards the end from Rafi saab and Asha : Isharon
ko samajho to raaz ko raaz rehne do.. lip synched by Pran/Bindu
took the film to a silver jubilee run. Just one great song from
Rafi saab tilted the scales. What about songs for Saawan Bhaadon
for newcomer Navin Nischol which piloted the film to box office
success. Thank you Sonik Omi team.
More, Rafi saab used to teach new singers how to throw their voices
in to the mike. He encouraged new singers and was not worried of
the COMPETITION. True Master Again……..

I think the song “Zindabad Zindabad…” from “Moghal e Azam” was picturised on Kumar, the one who made Dharmendra-Mumtaz starrer “Loafer”.

I have not heard the old Andaaz film of Dilip kumar n Raj kapoor but old timers say that the songs on Raj Kapoor was sung by Rafi sir.
Also there was a song from the film Adhikar picturised on the comedian Bramhachari Rekha oh Rekha jas se tumhe dekha… was popular those days and many boys used to tease girls if their name was Rekha.

I also feel we have missed Dono ne kiya tha pyaar magar from Mahua which was a masterpiece. But no one remembers the hero or the heroine and only few can remeber the MD Sonik Omi who were Rafi Bakths.
This song became as popular as any song of Rafi sab with leading MDs

Rafi’s voice on unknown artists.
Songs of Dosti are picturized on an unknown actor. Similarly the song from Mughal-e-Azam, ‘Zindabad E Mohabat Zindabad’ is also picturized on an unknown actor.
What about ‘Diwane Hai Diwane Ko’ on song writer Gulshan Bawara, truely amazing with the harmonium rythmn. Another master piece from CID, ‘O Leke Pahla Pahla pyar’ again with the harmonium on an unknown artist.
The song ‘Adami Musafir Hai’ is superb on a small time actor Sudhir Dalvi. Songs of Parasmani on a C grade actor Mahipal are remembered till date. Full credit to the LP-Rafi combo.
The song from Natwarlal, ‘Kayamat Hai’ is picturized on Kader Khan. The Song ‘Are Re Asa Tarrana’ Rafi sings for Amjab Khan in Yaraana.
Rafi sings for another small time actor Tariq in ‘Hum Kisi Kam Nahi’.
For Ajit, Rafi sings in Miss Bombay, ‘Zindagi Har Gham Judai Ka’.
For Prem Nath, Rafi sings ‘Mohabat Zinda Rahti Hai’. For Prithviraj Kapoor and Prem Chopra Rafi sings, ‘Jahan Dal Dal Par Sone Ki Chidiya’ in the film Sikander-e-Azam.
For another unknown actor Rafi sings ‘Fir Tumhari Aad Ayi E Saman’ in Rustom Sohrab.
Rafi has sung many songs for commedian Asrani.
There are many unforgetable gems sung by Rafi Saab for many unknown artists.

Thanks Hussein Saab for reminding these songs on Kishore Kumar and Dheeraj. In fact, ‘Man Mora Bawra’ from “Ragini” is considered by Mr. Raju Bharatan as the best song of Rafi for O.P.Nayyar and I am sure many would agree with his contention though I do not agree because I am of the opinion that Rafiji never sang one best song fo any hero or MD but best songs for them. The “Raton ka Raja” numbers ‘Door Se Tera Deewana’, ‘Muhabbat Se’, ‘Aana To Sajani’ and ‘Mere Liye’ were all hit songs in those days though the film did not run much. Similarly, how many of us remeber the heroes or actors on whom songs like ‘Nazar Aati Nahin Manzil’, ‘Meri Hasraton Ki Duniya’, ‘Apne Naam Ke Kareeb’, ‘Mere Pyaar Me Tuzhe Kya Mila’, etc. were picturised but these songs are still fresh in our mind.

Very nice article, but please do not forget that Rafi Saheb also sang for Kishore Kumar in Shararat, Raagini, Daastan. Also for Dheeraj in Raaton ka Raaja, the list is endless. No one can be compared with Rafi Saheb.
