Rafi’s day

By Mr. K.S.Ramachandran

I would like to call the 31st of July as “Mohd Rafi’s day” to commemorate the great work this singing legend has done for the musical film world!

Mohd Rafi richly deserves all praises from all corners of the world and by this note, I am requesting all Indians both in India and abroad, to please do something and organize some event to promote the greatness of Rafi Sahib both as a singer and also as a well spent life as a human being, on this memorable day.

27th Death Anniversary of legendary playback singer, Mohd Rafi

Mohd Rafi sang almost all varieties of songs throughout his life and his talent and quality of voice, literally in all aspects of his vocal chord, was put to test by all the music directors and it was just but natural for Rafi to have stood ably and successfully against those challenges, everytime. He not only stood by those challenging assignments but most often, to the surprise of the music directors, even surpassed them! That was Rafi and his dedication and passion to singing. No words can express the greatness of the best qualities that Rafi possessed as a playback singer.

The sudden and quick nose-diving from the highest octave to the lowest possible note in singing was his uniqueness, which hardly any singer could dare attempt! No one can dare say that he has not understood his rendition and diction. His delivery of words was faultless and sometimes one could even learn the right pronunciation of the great Urdu words!

Long live Mohd Rafi and his works which we all should preserve as a life time treasure that GOD has given us as a boon to our musical desires and dreams…

Mohd Rafi

GEMS of Rafi

We have many great songs of Rafi Sahib and it is naturally difficult to remember or compile a list. While we would have it already it various websites, I would like to pay my sincere Shradhanjali to this great legend, who has inspired the hearts of many music lovers across the world, by reliving some wonderful lilting numbers, which are literally, the “rare gems”. Mr Guru Murty you have penned your views very nicely . You are so simple in your views. I am sure its all the influence of our most beloved Rafi sahab upon you Murty garu. Real and true fans of Rafi sahab are always simple, sober. Its Rafi sahab’s family and lets make it big, bigger and the biggest as he taught us what melody is !!!

  2. H.V.GURU MURTHY says:

Well, we Rafi lovers grew up listening to his songs, discussed with freinds about his songs, saw movies with his songs, dreamt with his songs, in short enjoyed our life with his songs. If today, we are able to contribute to the web site with articles or commnets on articles written by others, it is purely as part of our happiness of sharing with fellow Rafi fans about his greatness both as a singer as well as human being. In our personal life, we hardly comke across people who are equally interested in our views, for example appreciation filmy music, Rafiji, etc. We have got an outlet now in the form of this website. What we are not able to share in our personal life, we are able to share with others here, i.e. discuss Rafi Sahab’s songs. In fact, we should welcome contribution of all people in this website, as it gives us an oppertunity to know more about our Rafi Sahab as well as to share our views with others, which perhaps we are not getting outside. My only request to all the contributors is that we should not use derogatory remarks against any Singers / MDs, etc. as well as against other Rafi Fans and try to appreciate others view points. When Rafi & KK were good friends, I fail to understand why their Fans should fight?.

There are many hyper people and many more with different character-
istics… One will meet different kinds of people everywhere..in an
organisation and rafi lovers forum its no different..
A true rafi lover is one who will put his head down and get along
and get ahead of others with his works for the rafi cause and not spent
their time criticising others or advising others; to put it very mildly.
Please do not waste ur precious time in unproductive ways..give some
    thing for the cause…

I hope my friends understand this and learn a few things from
    Mohd Rafi saabs life itself.

    Mr. Ramachandran,
Pl do not be hurt by Mr. Ramkrishna’s response. What actually he and many other probably meant that, a man of your knowledge of Rafi Sahab and in such an eminent position can give a great impetus by your active participation in Rafi Foundation activities, unlike we people who keep on running from pillar to post with nothing but passion in our heart. I fervently hope that you take this in the right spirit.
But, i fail to fathom about one thing when you wrote that you normally write only on 31st July. While the privilege of writing when and why is totally yours, i feel such knowledgeable people like you should write often and enlighten about music in general and Rafi Sahab in particular almost everyday.
I hope you will heed to our request.

  5. RAMAKRISHNA says:

Mr ramachandran got your response. I am not here to fight with any one. You please read the first line of my comments and thats it …………

  6. Narayanan says:

Ramakrishna Garu You are a very passionate pujari of Rafisaab like many others
but kindly be polite in ur post as Ramachandran sir has written the article in good faith and we all together should work as a team for the glory of treasures left by our greatest music maestro Rafi saab.
We all know that from Hyd lots of good news is going to come on the foundatn.
Ram sir do not get hurt as the passionate voice of a big fan has spoken in the right earnest and no individual criticism was meant.

  7. KS Ramachandran says:

    Dear Mr. Ramakrishna,
I just happened to see your response and I am pained by your allegations.
May I please inform you that it is only with sincere attempts to bring back good memories and how deeply we all mourn the demise of the greatest legend, that the articles are published. Your comments are extremely derogatory and baseless. I am forced to reply to your response as otherwise I do not choose to write other than on the day of 31st July. I am sure all the fans of Rafi would agree with me that we do not write articles here merely with the expecation of praises and wah wah from others as you have proclaimed. I would appreciate if this is understood and taken in the right perspective.
    With best regards
    Ramachandran

  8. RAMAKRISHNA says:

Mr Ramachhandran why do you put the job on others to start and do some thing for Rafi sahab? Its not just enough to scrible about Rafi sahab and get a good number of comments. You your self should take some initiative and start doing some thing. Just dont expect that you will be writing some sacharine regarding Rafi sahab & get wah wah from the people around.
We know what rafi sahab is. Do some thing creative & positive in stead of giving some statistics….. For God’s sake stop these emotions. You know Rafi sahab was a very simple person. Had he been alive he would not have encouraged it. Its just being hypocrytic Mr ramachandran.

There was only one channel and that was DM DIGITAL 817 which paid a tribute to Rafi saab on Monday 30th July from 7.30pm till 2am in the morning and it was brilliand with fans of the legend singing his songs and talking about him, well done DM as no other channel paid tribute to Rafi saab, what a sad sad world this is.

Also well done to SUNRISE RADIO as they paid a tribute to the legend and they will be doing it tonight again.

    Rafi saab forever

    Thanks

For the last 27 years this divine voice has been with us saying, “tum mujhe yun, bhulaa naa paaoge…jab kabhi bhi sunoge geet mere, sang sang tum bhi gungunaaoge..”, very true that Rafi sahab sang about 40 years back. What Albert Einstein once said for Bapu, will actually hold good for Rafi sahab as well. It is our responsibility to keep Rafi alive in our lives and pass on the magic and blessing of this voice to our kids, the way our parents did.
And this particular song wherein a whole bunch of heavy weight talented personalities like Mohammad Rafi, Hasrat Jaipuri, Shankar Jaiskishan and Shammi Kapoor participated will keep chasing us for rest of our lives.
May God Bless Rafi Sahab and best wishes for his family who got the blessing of being a part of Rafi Sahab.

Thanks Mr KS Ramachandran for a good article on our dear Rafi Sahib. It is sad that the media both the print and electronic did not do justice on his death anniversary. But I saw that CNN-IBM showed a one minute clip of a few Rafi fans at his grave site and offering their respects. I was sad to note that not one film personality especially the many heroes who benifited from Rafi present. This only shows how ungrateful the film industry is to Rafi. But Rafi sahib lives in the hearts of milllions of his fans and whenever we hear his beautiful voice there is such a ‘sacuun’.May God rest his soul in eternal peace.

I am a humble rafi fan.My biggest regret is that not a single T.V channel highlighted rafisaab on his death anniverssary, not a single newpaper carried any article .

We often see articles of Kishore Kumar, overrated Asha bhosle and ofcourse regular tributes to R.D burman who was a plagarist in all respects.

Very sad indeed that the greatest playback singer of India is not remembered.

  32. A S MURTY says:

The article by itself is a tribute to one of the greatest legends of the modern era and perhaps THE GREATEST among Hindi Playback singers that ruled the musical kingdom from the 1940s to the 1980s with his inimitable and melodious voice. For us RAFIANS it is a gift that our mentor has bestowed on us to be able to recall his songs, his voice, his thoughts and even his lifestyle. Those of our brethren who are still not familiar with the mystical and magical prowess that MOHD RAFI had, they are the losers. I often come across people who have not had the experience of MOHD RAFI and they sometimes laugh at our DEEWANGI. But, I am also reminded of a famous SHER by an unknown SHAYAR – CHALO ACHHA HUA KAAM AA GAYI DEEWANGI APNI, VARNA HUM ZAMANE BHAR KO SAMJHANE KAHAN JAATE.

Let us pray our tributes on this 27th Anniversary of his departure from our midst by organising meetings and singing some of his best songs, though in our limited style and capacity.

  33. C K Vasudevan says:

A Singer who can croon for the comedian in one scene and lavish praise thru the Hero, on the heroine in another, enliven a duet with her in yet another scene, make us wipe a tear in a beggar’s voice and add to the crescendo of the emotions in a charater’s hitherto silent role— CAN ONLY BE THE GREATEST RAFI….Born Only Once – It is good that we had none like him because a Clone would have cast a bad shadow and false pride

    RAFI’S VERSATALITY

After reading the article on Rafi’s versatility, I started recollecting the various songs of Rafi in various moods. By no means, the list is exhaustive and even if I am asked to choose after some time, I may choose some more or some other songs. In fact, it is very difficult to choose Rafi’s songs “as the best song or the two best songs” as we cannot leave other songs. I have still attempted to choose some of Rafi’s gems in various moods, which highlights Rafi’s versatility, deliberately choosing only solos except for duets listed.
