It is marvellous to have great websites on Legendry Mohd. Rafi. But I’m in search of websites which may provide live songs in concern. Please let me know how many number of songs credit to Mohammad Rafi Sahab in his 40 years singing career from 1940 to 1980 from the reference of all encyclopedias shows approx. 26000 number of songs credit to him. But some unreliable sources says only less than 5000 verified songs only what is the matter? Compiler of “Hindi Geet Kosh†Harmendar Singh was a Radio Listener and Record Collector Surjit Singh’s claims unreliable they cannot prove from discographical record of different labels sound recording companies.
This case is depend on:
1. What are the sources of collections?
2. What interest of selections?
3. What Discographies of Rafi shows from different labels?
There is a very big gap and confusion between 26000 and 5000 figures. If any reliable sources confirm and send me correct figure of Rafi Sahab Songs I will be very thankful to him.

I am an ardent fan of Rafi Sahab since my child hood. I had the deep desire to meet Rafi Sahab and to sit just beside him at least for a second. I used to go to Mumbai to my uncles house frequently but my shyness to express my desire before my uncle became my own obstacle for which I repent for my life time. The clarity, diction and above all the expression with the throw of the words by Rafi Sahab while renedering a song is unparallel. We can get singers who can sing like Rafi Sahab but can never make us forget Rafi sahab. That is our Rafi Sahab the great. I salute to that great soul who came to us in a mortal frame for a short time and dissapeared like a morning star leaving behind lingering melodies which keeps on vibrating for the time infinite.

I feel proud to be a Rafi Fan just like others. I think his quality of singing, voice and humanity he has, as listened from legendry music directors and others associated with him looks very difficult to see in next few decades. No other singer/contemperary sings is able to touch him. Whenever, we talk about music, sangeet, only one name comes first in my mind i.e. Mohd. Rafi. I don’t know what magic was in his voice/songs.
For the last few days/months, I’m looking for some websites where I can listen live songs, infact ‘LIve in Concert’ but not able to find. Please tell me the right path to locate such websites or send me in my mail some collections of Live in Concert, it might have with you in CDs. Will be waiting.

My entire family is a fan of Rafi Sahab (Gaayakon ki baadshah). Aise gayak kabhi nahin honge. The one and the only Rafi sahab. Even today I cry when I hear song O duniya ke rakh waale. I am a hardcore fan of Rafi sahab. My day never starts or ends without listening to atleast one of Rafi Sahab’s song. I worship him. He is my god. My music guru. He is everything to me.

I would like to say that Rafi Saab was an extra ordinary singer and God gifted.This type of singer take birth in century but even than he can not be compare to anyone.I personally love him a lot and I am sure that there would be no Indian who did not love him.It is my bad luck I could not see him face to face but when I listen his songs I feel him.When I listen his devotional song like”O duniya ke rakhwale”, trust me, I think he has made God to listen and God would have said”Who is this calling me?”.
I am proud of think that Rafi was from my own country.

About Rafi Sahab, I always sing rafi sahab and been singing for many years in private gathering in uae, I like all the songs but there is a song from film HUM DONO,(Khabi khudpe kabhi halat pe roa aya) when i sing with song I can do it but when I sing alone I get stuch at HUM TAO SAMJHEY THEY KE HUM BHOOL GAYE HAEN UNN KO (TWICE) and at this point I always say it was onlyRAFI SAHABwho sang this song and nobody ever can copy or sing in his way and the style, not only india but the whole world can never get asing like RAFI SAHAB at all.

Rafi Saab , well the legend and probably the best in the world and it will not be wrong if we call him ” TANSEN ” really he was who could forget the Baiju Bawra songs , NAUSHAAD saab once said that no one can take Rafi Saab’s place , I am proud to say that I have more than 500 songs in my collection and that too all SOLO songs of Rafi Saab .
As we all know that ” GOOD ” and ” EXCLUSIVE ” things have very little life as Rafi Saab was GOD’S Gift to us we had a very small but impressive feeling of him.
I pray to god to rest his soul in peace.
I do not listen to LATA , ASHA and KISHORE KUMAR is way out of my list because I don’t think they are singers.
Rafi Saab was one example who told us that singing can’t be a profession but it’s a journey of life which should be useful to others welfare and why not he has sung so many songs for those music directors without charging a penny , who can forget Madan Mohan Saab’s music composition he use to compose his songs with Rafi Saab only with his voice and also he had once said that I should not be paid for the music it’s Rafi Saab who does the magic.
I am not a FAN of Rafi Saab but a devotee because Rafi Saab was a true human being and that where he is an IDOL for me.

hi to all Rafi Fans….
at least we all share one thing in common and that is an ear for a great voice that was Rafi Saab. There was noone like him when he was around and i doubt anyone will ever fill his great role. Just so versatile, deep and just a suberb down to earth human being.
will be well missed by us all….but we have his songs to celebrate his wonderful and enchanting career. Through his voice alone he can bring a tear to your eyes and within seconds the mood is one of mischief and it leaves you smiling. What more can i say? TRUE LEGENDS NEVER DIE!!!
Alas i was but a young child when Rafi Saab was performing live….if only i could turn back the clock so that i may have had the pleasure of experiencing the Magic that was Rafi.

i am thrilled and grateful to find this website where i can share my love and thoughts of rafi saab with others. a musician who was also an equally great human being. his art reflects the profound beauty of his soul. i can go on and on…and never say enough in his praise. i really, really miss his (physical) presence in this world…and am saddened that we have had to live without more of his fantastic songs. i would give him a few years of my own life, if it were possible. i find solace and immense joy in listening to his songs and always either start dancing to them, or get swept away by tears! one can feel all the emotions in his songs directly and become totally enthrolled in them.
like all of you i too feel a exxtrememly blessed to have lived in this world during the time of his life and music.
i would love to say few words to rafi saab’s grandson raashid. i have always wondered about and wanted to meet his family. my husband’s uncle lived in the same building in bombay as rafi saab. wish i had the great honor of being there at that time.

I like Surjit Singh’s confidence in claiming that there are only about 5000 documented songs sung by legendary Rafi Saheb as against rumours of 26,000 songs. The gap is too much to accept.
Since Surjit speaks with so much confidence, can he please state numbers of other prominent singers for us to compare.

Dear Mohd. Rafi fans,
Of course, I am one of the crores of people who are madly in love with Rafisaab’s golden voice. To put it simply, he was and is SIMPLY THE GREATEST!!
One thing that I want to share with you – Rafisaab also sang some sweet songs in Marathi. The interesting part is that Rafisaab’s accent in Marathi songs was impeccable – as if Marathi was his mother tongue!!
The music director of some Marathi songs of Rafisaab was Shrikant Thakare – brother of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thakare.
Rafisaab’s ‘gayaki’ was a rare combination of superb voice quality, breath-taking range & the sensitivity to mould his voice in the character singing his song.
One small example- ‘Madhumati’ has Rafisaab’s 2 songs – ‘Jungle main mor naacha’ [On Johnny Walker] & ‘Toote hien khwaboon ne’ [On Dilip Kumar].
Rafisaab’s generosity was legendary.
Lastly, Rafisaab has done great service to Hindustan by staying in Mumbai even after Partition – imagine our loss had he chosen to go over to Pakistan!
Still lastly, Rafisaab was more Hindu than those born as Hindus – his countless ‘Bhakti’ [devotional] songs show him as a truly pious person.
Lastly, we pray to Ishwar to send Rafisaab back to us in his next ‘avatar’, because we indeed miss him the most!!

Hi! am Picco and live in Calcutta.I m just 15 yrs old and i have many more yrs left to cross this life of mine.I think if i could use this above line of mine as “i have few more yrs left in my life” then i could have seen this LIVING LEGEND MOHAMMAD RAFI Sahab.Yes Yes he is still living,he is living in our hearts,living in our minds.
I get very upset of the reason that there are lack of Concerts,Shows and road names on him.I burst out in anger if anyone tells anything against Rafi Sahab.Specially the kishore kumar fans.I feel like killing them.I stopped listening to Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM coz they don’t feel like playing Rafi Sahab’s songs.On the 26th DEATH ANNIVERSIRY also they didn’theld any show on this great legend.

I was recently told that there was an article on the gravesite of Mohd. Rafi. The news stated that the gravesite was making way for a new building? This cannot be true! Are there plans to move his grave? Anyone know of this?

Even after his death Rafi Sahib can change my mood any time.. He is like God to me… His voice is God’s Voice for me. His voice touches me right in the heart… I am not only a fan or Mr. Rafi… I worship rafi… he had some Godly magic in his voice.. he certainly had some link with God… till the time this world remains… no one can even touch Rafi Sahib’s voice… Sometimes i feel that no one loves Mr. Rafi more than me.. but when I saw web sites like this i realise the greatness of Mr. Rafi… I wish i could ever meet or see Mr. Rafi in person.. but that’s not possible now… He is more than just a singer for me. I LOVE RAFI….!!! I don’t have words to prove how much i love rafi…!!! Dear Mr. Raashid,
You are very lucky person being grandson of a legend. I live in Ulhasnagar, and am the member of Rafi fan club which is organized by one Doctor Prabhu Ahuja. He is so fond of Rafi’s voice that one flat he has purchased where rehearsal takes place mainly of Rafi’s songs. Singers from nearby area have become the members of this club. The club organize programme twice in a year on Rafi saabs birthday and on his death anniversary. I feel it is impossible to sing like Rafi but if you understand him and his voice that is more than enough. Rafi ki tarah koi gaa nahin sakta magar unko aur unki awaaz ko samjhana hi bahut hai.

I recently got some recordings of Rafi saab (Recordings from test records) which are really wonderful…..These songs were never released….The films are “Saat Samunder Paar”/”Mohar”/Sri Ram Bharat Milan”/”Duniya Hain Dilwalon Ki”/”Wohee Ladki”/”Tilasmi Khanjar”/”Sandesh”/”Aayegaa Aanewala” etc….

i am a great lover of rafi saab’s song since my childhood, i remember i had just joined engineering college in Bhopal that i got the news of rafis saab’s death, i was totally shaken,distressed,disappointed and shocked and could not eat for many days therafter but then I consoled myself and realised that, Allah loved him much much more than us and had re-called rafi saab, for he was bestowed with a divine voice,which comes once in a million years,a voice which moved and stills moves billions of souls.

I guess it is a low budget movie, but a real great one starring no one greater than Steve Buscemi and a young and undiscovered Scarlett Johanson. Its a movie for real music lovers. You must be incredibly proud of your grandpa. You have no clue how I feel about Rafi saab. He is the closest to God as far as I am concerned.
I have been searching for the song titled ‘Joode mein gajra mat baandho’ from the movie Dhoop-Chhaon. If you can direct me to a location where I could possibly download it from, that would be awesome.

At the outset, being the grandson of such a great soul is special(it is purv punya). Great people like your grandfather are born rarely. U are second generation from your grand father. When all of us feel proud to own such a noble and precious soul, u should all the more be rejoicing, as you belong to his genes.(lineage). To be frank enough we grew up listening to his melodies. Even to this day, if an old song is played either on FM channel or on any television channel, I love to watch or listen for a second time. Such was your grandfather’s aura. Still intact and without replacement. By the way, were u born when your grandfather was still alive or after. I have heard he was very soft spoken and shy person. If you can provide live videos recorded in those times (including that of musical concerts) and any interesting articles which we have missed out on the great soul till now, his likes/dislikes, his little hobbies, personal favourites, just about any thing…. do send to me…. Your grandfather is national treasure… I wish the Govt of India bestows Bharat Ratna to him at the earliest and I congratulate U for it in advance…

I have heard about the controversy between Rafi Saab and Lata ji over royalty issues. Even Salil chaudhary sided with Lata ji during the recording of the song “Tasveer teri dil mein…” when Lata ji got irritated with Rafi Saab over some singing technicalities. Despite all these the song was a great hit and Rafi Saab was as usual undoubtedly SUPERB. Can someone add some more about it.

It is Sad indeed that the Main stream Indian Channels continue to ignore the best there ever was Rafi Saab. They choose to do “K for Kishore” and the awards have SRK doing tribute to KK but never anything for Rafi saab.
It is so sad to see the very industry that Rafi Saab carried for so long on his wings turn it’s back on his memory.
But that admiration, love and memory they cannot take away from the millions of his fans round the world.

i think the ease with which rafi sang some of the most difficult songs were almost impossible for most of the singers. listen to almost all the duets he sang with any male/female singer and he proved that he was really superior in almost all of them. actually, he was the born singer. his voice was simply the gift of God to the true music lovers.

Does anyone know who the ‘guitarist’ was on the recording : ‘ Jaan Pehechaan Ho’?? And also the actor singing that song in the film :”GUMNAAM”. from what I understand the actor in the Ballroom nightclub was NOT Mohammed Rafi!?

mr. david pope, the guitarist for “jaan pehchan ho” was dilip naik, who was a regular in shankar-jaikishan’s orchestra. He later joined r. d. burman’s orchestra. On the drums was leslie godinho, who used to acccompany mohd rafi regularly on concert tours.
There is a visitor to this site who goes by the name of myk; he is a living encyclopedia on musicians of the hindi film industry. If he is around, he’d be able to give your more details about some of these star musicians.

“Jaan Pehchan Ho” is a popular hit song from Film:Gumnaaam(1965). The leading actors in the Film are Mr. Manoj Kumar, Ms. Nanda and Mr. Mehmood.
The song, “Jaan Pehchaan Ho”, was sung by the greatest Indian singer of all times, Mohammed Rafi. The composer of music for this song is Shankar Jaikishan.
In Indian Films, the actors lip the songs in the Film, but the voices belong to playback singers such as Mohammed Rafi.
In the case of this song, the song was actually encated/lipped in the Film by one Mr. Harman, a professional dancer.
Generally, the Guitarists for Shankar Jaikishan were:

i would like to know more about the difference of opinion mohd. rafi sahab had with lata mangeshkar regarding about the royalty amount/ money for their songs. mohd. rafi sahab turned down her proposal.
also i want to know about the period when rafi sahab had stopped singing.

I am not wrong Mohd Rafi stop singing only for 8 months when be back from haj and went to Landon..
Lata Ji stop to sing with mohd Rafi because she loves money and that her right but Mohd rafi never care of money only how to sing a song and after recording the song he never ask for money.when Mohd Rafi was at the top(still on the top)Mohd Rafi sang for C Grade films that was his greatness and in late 1970’s he sang two songs under KK music for only 1 Rs……..
when LP was new Mohd Rafi sang for him for free same to Naushand for his last song for Nashand Ali he sang it for free

whenever I listen to rafi sahab I think out of wonder how come this voice is so much filled with unlimitedlove when he sings love songs,,,,how can a person overflowing with that kind of emotion everytime,,,,now I come a bit of this secret its because of the fact that there so many like reiaz who loves rafi sahab unconditionally,,,,,,,,,,,,,what about we mortals who only know worldly things,,,,if can have feel this way for Rafi sahab,,it appears for certain that duniya ke rakhwale has listened to rafi sahab`s call…,surely God also love him more than anyone of us as,,God has given so much divinity to his voice,,,

You are really lucky grand son of Late great singer M. Rafi. I feel my self unlucky that I could not see him , when he passed away I was just 12 years old and not much aware of film industry and playback singing etc. ,
Rafi sab was great and will stay great for ever, none can touch that hight.
I will be really happy to get any small info about him so please share with me his songs and memory you have.
In last May I was in Europe and wanted to visit London but somehow was not possible.
but in future,If possible surely see you in London.
Is there any possibility to visit and share Rafi memory in Mumbai ?

When I was in 8th Std I came to know the departure of Rafi sahab from this world.I even dont know who was this singer.One day my teacher called me and said to sing a song in class. I just came a sang a song from Yaadon ki barat.title song.I even dont know who sung this song.But after one year when I was just listening song from Khilona. Teri shaadi pe doon tujh ko tohfa main kya.It touched my heart and I ask my freind who is this singer he said me this is rafi.Main ne kaha yaa allah yeh awaz hai ya zaadu.From that time till now i became the murid of Rafi.Bollywood main sabi logon ki controversy hai lekin yeh allah ki inayat hai ki ek bhi controvery rafi sahab ki nahi hai.Aur Rafi sahab ka imaan allah par zabardust kayam tha.Paiso ki kabhi sahab ne parwa nahi ki .Jisne diya liya na diya manga bhi nahi.Mere khayal main rafi sahab dunya ka 8 waan ajooba hai.

What can i write about late legend Rafi sahab !!! He was the complete singer & good person .I was singing like Rafi sahab since colleage time .My friends & colleagues called me “Rafi” .Still today i am singing Rafi sahab songs .He has everything what music requires .He was my Music God !!
I could not meet him as i was very small at that time but my dream is to meet atleast his family members at mumbai if possible

i love love and loved always the great singer of the sub-continent his sung songs even after 50-60 years are as fresh as ever my elder brother MOHD ALY was a great fan of Mohd Rafi and i am too a small singer of home always sing and record and hear Mohd Rafi songs GOD BLESS HIM AND HIS SOUL we still love him. I cannot make any comment on rafisaab’s voice as i m too small for it. alredy all maestros in music world has made lot of comments about it and no doubt in my mind that there is no one like rafisaab. espesially apart from a singer he was a nice person which is a very rare thing in film industry. hats of to such wonderful personality.

In fact on Saturday 15.05.10 friends invited some people and knowing that we fans of your late granddad requested that we sing some of the golden oldies.
It really went down well. We commenced at around 8.00 pm on a cold winters night in south africa,and at well past midnight the people were still seated.

Mohammed Rai est une grande personnalité qui bien laissé ses emprintes sur la chanson indoux ..grace à lui on a aimé les films de GUIDE kabi kabi …la liste est longue ..malgré toutesles difficultés de comprehension des poèmes chantés en langue indoux nous aimons son chant qui orne la musique d’une voix douce et qui enchante les mots prononcés avec avec dévotion inouie

I have loved listening to rafi sahab’s songs since i was a child, i’m 59 now,and till today there has not been a singer who has rafi’s sweetness at even at pitch. I regret not having met my singing idol though i lived in Bandra during rafi’s peak.and my idol’s house was next door literally. i stayed at Bhabha Hospital as my dad was a doctor

what a singer he was…..just cant forget him ever…..till i live….now I am 50+
when i was in school in the 60s and 70s….i used to listen VividBharti from 9AM to 10AM….wait for his songs, then leave for my school….at 10….
have been listening his songs for the past 40+ yrs…..i have a collection of some 500+ of his best songs….
kaash….he could come back into our life…..re-born….
