Mohd Rafi and Sanjeev Kumar

Hari Bhai (Sanjeev Kumar) was my favourite actor. His association with our maestro Pheeko (Rafi Sahab) was great and unforgettable. Pheeko gave innumerable and mind blowing songs to this prominent Indian actor. Hari Bhai, ( Harihar Jariwala ), who was born in Surat, Gujrat on July 9, 1938 and died at a very tender age of 47, on November 6, 1985.

In the early part of 80’s, I remembered reading in “India Tribune” from Chicago, that Hari Bhai had coronary bypass surgery at Baylor’s Heart Institute, in Houston, Texas, USA.

Hari Bhai started his career in 1960 , in the film “Hum Hindustani”. His first film as a hero was “NISHAN” in 1965 . Pheeko sang a romantic and dazzling song for him.

Hai tabassum tera, dhoop khil gai raat me”, composed by Usha Khanna and beautifully penned by Javed Akhtar.

In 1966, another hit song for Hari Bhai, beautifully sung by Maestro from the movie “Husn Aur Ishq”, composed by Ganesh and written by Noor Devassi. “Jinki Tasveer Nigahon me Liye Phirta Hoon”.

In 1967, another hit number, “Khuli wadiyon ka safar hai, Haseen manzilon pe nazar hai”. What a song, beautifully composed by sapan Jagmohan and lyrics by well known poet Naqsh Laayalpuri. In the same year, another mind blowing song of Pheeko Sahab for Hari Bhai for the movie “ Naunihal”. Look at the romantic lyrics by Kaifi Azmi, music by Madan Mohan and spell bound voice of our maestro. ‘Tumhari zulf ke saaye me shaam karloonga”.

1968: O’ phirki wali tu kal phir aanaRaja Aur Runk – MD L.P. and lyrics by Anand Bakshi.

1969: Shair to nahi, lekin Shair ki nazar pai hai – A master piece by our maestro for the movie “ Insaaf Ka Mandir “, composed by sapan Jagmohan and penned by Naqsh Laayalpuri. In the same year two another melodious songs from the movie “Tere Milne Ke Baad “, again produced by the Combo of Sapan Jagmohan and Naqsh Laayalpuri. “ Soja sanam teri jawan palkon tale sapne sajadoon mai” The other song is “ Dil kabhi tum ne diya tha, yeh tumhe yaad rahe” These two songs could mesmerize any body. “IN NAGHMO ME PHEEKO KI GAYEKI APNE UROOJ PAR HAI”.

1970: Shaadi ke liye raza mand karli, main eek ladki pasand karli from the movie “Devi”, music by L.P. and lyrics by Anand Bakshi. Same year,Block Buster movie

Khilona” was released with two hit numbers of our Maestro for Hari Bhai, composed by L.P. and penned by Anand Bakhshi.

Khush rahe too sada, dua hai meri “ and “ Khilona jaankar tum to mera dil tod jaate ho”. Hari Bhai’s heroin in this movie was beautiful and chanchal “Mumtaz” and Hari Bhai’s role as a paagal was unforgettable in this movie. Again in the same year, another beautiful number of our Maestro from the movie “Night in Calcutta “.

Composed by Usha Khanna and penned by Asad Bhopali,

Main hazaron haseeno ka mahboob hoon”.

In the same year, another super hit song of our Maestro from the movie “ Dastak “, composed by Madan Mohan and written by our great poet Majrooh Sultanpuri. Pheeko’s gayeki in this Ghazal is beyond anybody’s imagination. “Superb”.

1971: “Ai jaane baharan rooh-e-chaman, another romantic number, beautifully composed by Bhooshan and lyrics by Naqsh Laayalpuri for the movie “ Purani Pehchan “.

1972 : “Meri biwi jahan se nirali hai “-  A fun song for Hari Bhai from the movie “ Subha-o-Shaam “, music by L.P. and lyrics by Anand Bakshi.

1973 : There were several songs from the following movies. All songs were very popular and hit numbers.

1) Soora Aur Chanda : “Gaoon me peepal”, “Tu mujhe thaam le “, “ Tere naam ka diwana

Composed by Laxmikant Pyaarelal and lyrics by Anand Bakshi.

3) Door Nahin Manzil : “ Ajeeb zindagi hai yeh, kabhi khusi kabhi hai gham “. Another hit song, composed by Shankar Jaikishan, penned by Anjaan.

2)      Naya Din Nai Raat – “ Mai wohi wohi baath, mere liye to har din naya din “ again composed by L.P. lyrics by Rajinder Krishna.

1976 – “ Is dil me rah chuke hain who armaanon ki tarah “- Another hit number of our Maestro for Hari Bhai in the movie “ Do Ladkiyan “, misic by L.P. and penned by Anand Bakshi.

1977 – “ Jode me gajra mat baandho mera geet mahak jayega “ – When you listen to this song, you feel as Hari Bhai is singing . Yeh Pheeko ka hi kamal hai. This song is from the movie “ Dhhop Chaoon “, composed by Shankar Jaikishan and written by Virendra Mishra. The same year, another hit song of our Maestro for Hari Bhai is from the movie “ Dil Aur Patthar “, composed by, Iqbal Qureshi and penned by Kaifi Azmi. “ Mera pyar jawan dildar jawan “.

1980 – “ Dheere chal zara oh paagal purwaiyya “ –  A beautiful rendition of our Maestro for Hari Bhai in the movie “ Hum Paanch “, composed by L.P. and written by Anand Bakshi. When you listen to this song , you actually feel a breez is touching to you. This is the kamaal of our beloved Maestro. There are three more songs rendered by our Maestro for Hari Bhai in this movie.

Silsila , Khilona etc.

4)      He was never married. Although, he was very closed to the actress and singer Sulakshana Pandit.

5)      After his death, K. Asif’s movie “ Love and God”, starred with Nimmi  was a memorable release.

6)      In the movie “ Naya Din Nayi Raat “, Hari Bhai played nine roles. Our Maestro sang a beautiful and melodious song for Hari Bhai. “ Mai wohi wohi baat, mere liye to har din naya din

Silsila – Dr. V.K. Anand

Chere pe Chehra – Dr. Wilson

Kaala Patthar – Dr. Romesh

Mausam – Dr. Amarnath Gill

Kunwara Baap

Besides solo songs, there are number of duets of our Maestro with female singers for Hari Bhai. The combo of Pheeko and Hari Bhai was unforgertable. Our Maestro’s gayeki, melody, modulation and effects for Hari Bhai’s personality was superb and unbelievable.

One of my dearest friend and die hard fan of Rafi  sahab, praised our Maestro, I quote:

IK TIM-TIMAATA DIYE KO SURAJ SE NA MILAAO

ISS AWAAZ KO SURO’N KE SAMRAAT SE NA MILAAO

the song i had in mind is chadi re chadi kaise gale mien padi from ‘ mausam ‘ . but it seems i was mistaken about it the composer is not rdb but madan mohan. i regret the oversight, i was confused because of the gulzar lyrics.

There is another good song from ‘raja our rank’ which goes like “Rang basanti Rang basant chha gayaa “. hope i am right about this

Somehow I am not able to recollect the song, which you are talking about. If it is duet, then I am not good in duets. I apreciate, if you let us know the song. Thanks.

I did not know Rafi sahab was also known as pheeku. The knowledgeable writer has missed one very beautiful song sung by rafi sahab composed by the inimitable RDB for Sanjeev Kumar. Any guesses ? Only rafi song (Duet) in the typical RDB score.

I am a rafi fan since child hood. Been there, done that, received flak for stating to other hindi film music lovers ” Rafi ko nahin suna to kya suna “. Some knowledgebale people have closed minds about somethings. Its their choice and their loss. I seriously feel both RDB and SDB while composing songs for Kishore, somhow compromised on their art, specially SDB, during the later years (Usually for Navketan films). I dont know, I could be wrong in this.

And I am not talking about the qawalli in Aandhi. Lets wait and see if there r any answers to this.

  5. Not only Harji Bhai Zariwala aka Late Great Sanjeev Kumarji but all the actors whom Rafi Saheb lend his voice became superhit. It was the voice of this legendry singer who became the voice of Dev Sahab, Shammi Kappor Sahab, Dilip Kumar Sahab, Late Rajendra Kumar Sahab, Dharmendra, Jitendra, Rishi Kapoor and many more. Truely yours Rafi Sahab

I went to see the movie with my sister and I thought that Shammi Kapoor sang this song. My sister said, “Bewakoof, Shammi Kapoor nahi, Mohd. Rafi Sahab ne gaya hai.

Lt.Col.Javed saheb: ” The combination has been unique, complimentary and wealth of wide range of songs is for us to treasure”. You are absolutely right.

Ramesh Narain Kurpad saheb: Mere tarf se bhi pyar bhar salam aur namaskar. “Aapne do behtereen insanon ke bare mein likha hai”. Aapki hammath afzai ka bahut bahut shukriya.

Haldar Saheb: You are right. both Rafi sahab and Hari Bhai were very fond of food. I was told by some one that Rafi Sahab was very fond of Hyderabadi Biryani.

Jasbir singh Zando: Shukriya. “Jitna likhen utna hi kam hai”. This is the truth.

Shirish kulkarni saheb: Shukriya. This is my ignorance. The romantic song “hai tabassum tera” is penned by Javed Anwar not Javed Akhtar.

A.T.M.Saleem Saheb, Bahut bahut Shukriya. Always pleasure to read your comments. Thanks for the songs.

One of my friend reminded me one more song of our maestro on Hari Bhai from the movie “insaan aur shaitan”, year 1970, music by Usha Khanna, lyrics by Indeever. “Chalte chalo chalta hua saahil hai zindagi”. Mind blowing song. This song is available on you tube.

    Dr. Khaja Aliuddeen Saab,

your write up is fantastic and amazing with superb writing skills. As you mentioned , I remember one famous song of Rafi Saab from “ Suraj Aur Chanda” (1973) where Rafi Saab sang for our Hari Bhai, very sweet song – Tere Naam ka Diwaanaa…..

    The video clipping is here

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WC3ONDQuYGo

I just try to compare this song with today’s time and people –

    Rafi sings
“tere naam kaa diiwaanaa tere ghar ko Dhuu.nDhataa hai
jis nazar pe dil fidaa hai us nazar ko Dhuu.nDhataa hai”

    what Zamana searching
“Tere naam kay deewaane tere ghar ko dhundhtey hain
Tere Ghar kay raaston ko, dagar ko dhundhtey hain”

    Then Rafi sings
    “Aawaz dil ki pahachan le
Main kaun hoon tu ye jaan le
ek raat kaa sitaaraa ek sahar ko Dhuu.nDhataa hai”

    Zamana
    “Awaz apni tu jaan le
    Hum kaun hain pehchaan le
Kya milega tere ghar se uss hunr ko dhuundhtey hain”

    Then again Rafi sings
    “jaan\-e\-wafaa o jaan\-e\-jigar
ye zindagi to hai ek safar
is safar me.n ek musaafir hamsafar ko Dhuu.nDhataa hai”

    Zamana
    “Duniya se hai tu bekhabar
Kuch bhi nahi hai tujh ko fikar
Tere naam ki badaulat saaman/-e/ dar ko dhuundhtey hain”

    And finally Rafi sings
Phoolon main jaise hai rang o buu
Mujh ko chupha le aankhon main tuu
Mera dil tadap tadap ke dilbar ko Dhuu.nDhataa hai”

    Zamana
Dil main hamare hai tuu hi tuu
Hum ko lagi teri hi justaajuu
Tasveeron ko teri net peh umr bhar dhuundhtey hain

Dedicated to the fun loving people.

standing ovation to you Aliuddin Sahab. This is one of the greatest write-ups which is the true hallmark of a great Rafi Bhakt like you. I particularly liked, towards the end “Rafi Foundation of my hometown – Hyderabad”. We are indebted Sir. Rafi Sahab suited Sanjeev Kumar to the hilt. Raja Aur Rank, Suraj Aur Chanda, Khilona (all Anand Bakshi/LP combinations though) produced some of the most enchanting musical scores and simply outstanding renditions by Rafi Sahab. Aapki shayari bhi behad khoobsoorat aur bemisal hai jiske liye main aapko tahe dil se mubarakbaad dena chahunga.

  17. H.A.K. Walijah says:

    Dear Rafians,

I would like to share my personal experience with you all. As it happened with me on Monday – 21 June, 2010 on that special day it was recorded the highest temperature of 56 °C near the surroundings of Dammam (Saudi Arabia). As usual I was going for my lunch at about 1:00 pm and from the morning I was humming the song of “ Khushbu Hoon Main Phool Nahin Hoon Jo Murjhaoonga” a song from the movie “Shayaad” (1978). When I came out from my office to go for lunch that song was on my lips and I was deeply immersed and humming while walking towards the restaurant (I was all alone) where I take my meals every day afternoon. All along the way I never felt any temperature (heat); and felt no heat waves nothing at all. When I return to my office, there was a big discussion on the temperature of the day. My colleagues asked me how I felt outside, it is like Hell out there. I told them I felt nothing as you mentioned. It is like a normal day for me. But later on I noticed it was really a hot day indeed compare to other normal days.

With this incidence I do not know what the song makes me to immerse myself, as the song and the lyrics were made me crazy and did not allow me to feel the heat of the day in those thirty minutes of walk. It just happened to be a healer song for me.

Later I came to the conclusion that some songs of Rafi Saab are really wonderful and worked like healers to the fans who love Rafi Saab and his songs too, and I think am sure one among those lucky people.

A nice write up on this great combination.
This is with reference to that great song “Hai tabassum tera…”, this song was written by Javed Anwar and not Javed Akthar. Incidentally and interestingly, Javed Anwar is thye pen name of Manohar Khanna, father of usha khanna! He also wrote for the film Shabnam ” Maine rakha hai muhabat” & “yeh teri sadagi, yeh tera baankpan”, again composed by his daughter usha khanna not filmed on Hari bhai of course).

    Dr. Khaja Aliuddin Sahab,

Thanks for reminding us of the great songs of Rafi saab for Hari bhai. Hari bhai was one of my favourite actors. There is one thing that both actor and singer shared — love of food — and as a doctor, you know better than anyone else how dangerous that could be. Most of the songs you’ve chronicled are great, but the two Madan Mohan compositions in Naunihal and Dastak have always been very, very special to me. Whenever I think of ghazals, the Naunihal song (“tumhari zulf ke saaye me sham kar loonga”) comes to mind. Of course, the other classic from the film is sung in the background for Pandit ji’s funeral procession. Like Pandit ji, Hari bhai was a great fan of rafi saab. The song from Dastak (“tum se kahun ek baat”) is one of the best low-pitched deliveries in hfm — what voice modulation! “Halki halki halki…” and it knocks the bails off.

  26. Dr.Khwaja Aliuddin Sahab ko mera pyaar bharaa namashkaar.

aapney do behtereen insaanon key bareymein likhaa hai.

u have done ample justice to the teaming of these great personalities and in their life times they have made some wonderful songs and they with us as all time hits.

haribhai is my favourite actor and he along with dadamoni never acted or enacted – they were just natural performers.

now our own rafi sahab’s link with haribhai professionally was like ” sone pe suhagaa “.

sahab i dont have words to express after having read your article – jismey ek ajeebsaa vazan hai – jokee donon hastiyonko aur bulandiyon pe bitaatee hai.

congrats on a great effort from you sahab – aisey hee likhtey rahiyegaa.

    Dr Sahab,
    Adaab,

Thanks for writing such an informative article. In fact I was not aware there are so many songs sung by Rafi picturized on Sanjeev Kumar.

I would like add one song from the film Be Reham, “Taqdeer Ke Kalam Se Tu Bhach Naa Payegaa”. The song is in background based on the character played by Sanjeev Kumar. He plays a role of a Police Commissioner going through a troubled relationship.

    Regards,
    Anmol Singh.

    dear khaja sahab,

thanks for the article on the combination of rafiji and one of the finest actor-Hari bhai.
2 songs i would like to add to the list-
film Dastak- Tumse kahoon ik baat paron se halki- the Sanjeev kumar and rehana sultan are out in mumbai- walking on the marine drive, probably, late in the night. He sings to her, very close to her ears, this song. Sung softly, with clarity- by rafiji.

Film- Bachpan- AAya re khilonewala khel khilone leke aaya re aaya re- the song tugs at your heart- superbly enacted as well as sung.

I have observed that there are so many out there, who have so much knowledge and the zeal to share it with others. congrats to each one of you.

FINE AND CRISP ARTICLE DOCTOR KHAJA SAAHEB…

ONE POINT : HARI BHAI SANJEEV KUMAR AND VINOD KHANNA – BOTH WERE THE actors to watch in the eighties. vinod khanna migrated to OSHO RAJNEESH ASHRAM AND FATE took away our hari bhai from us.
Haribhai house stands next to meena kumaris house at pali hill. we remember our hari bhai whenever we go to meet kaman amrohi’s son shandar amrohi saaheb.
DOCTOR SAAHEB NICE TO DEDICATE THIS ARTICLE TO RAFI LOVERS. A RAFI FAMILY IS IN PLACE – IF I AM NOT TOO WRONG..

LIKHTE RAHIYE…. DOCTOR SAAHEB AUR HUM PADHTE RAHENGE….

a wonderful philosophical number was in alibaba40 chor ” banaye ja bigade ja bigade jaa banaye ja , ke ham tere chirag hain, jalaye ja bujhaye jaa “.
when rafi saab says ” banaye jaa” to end the mukhda, the way he takes off is just worth listening to. probably one of the first movies of hari bhai asa hero, music byusha khanna, another devotee of rafi saab.

  34. The Great Rafi had a god gift to mould his voice and he did it very comfortably for sanjeev kumar too..This quality of Rafi is unmatched. No one has reached near Rafi so far and probably no one would..ever..

  35. Lt Col Javed Sayyed says:

    Dear Dr Khaja sahab,
Nice flow of admirable information. Very lucidly you have enumerated the relation of our beloved rafi sahab with sanjeev kumar. As is the forte with rafi sahab, he has excelled in his playback for sanjeev kumar too in all the songs with immense scope for bringing out the best fron this talented actor. The combination has been unique & complementary & the wealth of wide range of songs is for us to treasure.
Keep up the good work in refreshing our souls.

  36. Nasreen says:

I wrote a comment earlier but don’t think it got submitted properly, so am writing agian. Khaja Aliuddin Bhai, thanks for this nice article about Rafi Saab’s songs for Sanjeev Kumar. I am so glad you wrote about this, Sanjeev is one of my favourite actors and it’s a pity he died so young. He was an excellent actor.
I don’t even know some of the songs you have mentioned (shows my ignorance) – it would be so great if some them could be uploaded here?
Thank you so much for including my name among your list of hard-core Rafi fans. I am honoured and grateful for that. How could I not be an ardent fan? Have heard his songs from a young age, and am so grateful to God that we have these songs. No burden can be too heavy if we just listen to a song of the great Rafi Saab.

  37. Nasreen says:

    Dear Khaja Aliuddin Sahab

It is so good to see someone write about the maestro’s songs for Sanjeev Kumar, who seems to have become forgotten these days. He was also one of my favourites. An excellent actor. Rafi Saheb did justice to all the songs he has sung for him (but what is surprising about that? He has not sung a single song with which one can find any imperfection).

I am grateful to you and feel honoured to be included in your list of ‘hard-core Rafi lovers’. How can anyone who has heard his songs from childhood not be his ardent fan?
Thank you for mentioning songs which are not always to be heard. (It would be wonderful if someone could upload them here too).

  38. Utthara says:
