Mohammed Rafi for Biswajeet and Joy Mujherjee

This article is written by Mr. H.V.Guru Murthy

The sixties saw the emergence of two Bengali heroes on Hindi Screen, Biswajeet and Joy Mukherjee. The former was a serious threat to the great Uttam Kumar on the Bengali Screen and the latter was from the famous S.Mukherjee family. Though limited in talent, they were lucky to get the best songs of Sixties and the decade saw huge hits of these two Actors. Of course, Rafi was the main play back singer for both these actors and played a major role in their stardom.

Biswajeet to start with had Hemanta Kumar as his singer in films like Bees Saal Baad, Rahgir, Bin Badal Barsaat, Majboor, Kohra, etc. But once Rafi started singing for him, he rose like a meteor. Majboor with KA as MD (Solo ‘Woh Baat’), April Fool with SJ (Title song, ‘Meri Mohabbat’, the super melodious ‘Aa Gale Lagza’, ‘Kehdo-Kehdo’ with Lata and the evergreen duet with Suman ‘Tuze Pyaar Karte Hain’), Mere Sanam with OP (four solos including one of the best romantic solo of Indian Cinema – ‘Pukarta Chala Hun Main’, ‘Huye Hain Tumpe Aashiq Hum’, ’Humdum Mere’, ‘Tukade Hain Mere Dilke’ and three duets with Asha – ‘Roka Kayi Baar Maine’, ‘Haanji Haanji Haanji Are Hanji Baba’ and the wonderful ‘Humne To Dilko Aapke’), Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi with OP again (Two super duets with Asha – ‘Phir Miloge Kabhi’ and ‘Aapase Maine Meri Jaan’), Shahanai with Ravi (Title song, ‘Na Zhatako Julf Se Paani’, ‘Kitni Jawan Hain Zindagi’ picturised on both Biswajeet and Johny Walker and the duet with Asha – ‘Sadiyon Purani’), Kaise Kahun with SD (‘Kisiki Mohabbat Me’ with Asha and the solos – ‘Zindagi Ko Zhoomle Jara’ and another song picturised in a Radio Station apart from the classical opening song, lyrics of which I am not getting), Sagai with Ravi again (‘Na Ye Zamin Thi’ with Asha), Do Dil with Hemant Kumar as MD (Solo ‘Tera Husan Rahe Mera Isq Rahe’ another super melodious song and the duet with Aarti Mukhrerjee ‘Kara Mora Kajara Churaya Toone’), Night In London with LP (Two solos – ‘O My Love’ and ‘Bahosho Hawaaz Me Deewana’ and two duets – Title song with Asha and ‘Baagh Me Phool Kisane Churaye Hain’ with Lata), Biwi Aur Makaan (Wonderful solo ‘Jaagi Jaagi Ankhiyon Ke Sapnon Me’), Do Kaliyan with Ravi (Two duets with Lata – the popular ‘ Tumhari Nazar’ and the not so popular ‘Ye Sama Ye Rut Ye Nazare’) , Vaasna with Chitraguptha (the excellent duet with Lata – ‘Ye Parbaton Ke’ and the solo ‘Itni Nazuk Na Bano’. The hit solo ‘Aaj Is Tarah Pilado’ and ‘Kis Tarah Jeete Hain’ were picturised on Raaj Kumar), Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan (A solo and the wonderful hit duet with Asha – ‘Panchi Re O Panchi’), ‘Ae Meri Zindagi Tu Nahi Ajnabhi’ a duet with Lata from Pyaar Ka Sapna of MD LP and the soul stirring solo from Mumtaz starrer Shararat – ‘Dilne……. Pyaar Kiya Hai Ek Bewafase’ of MD Ganesh.

Joy Mukherjee

Joy Mukherjee was lucky to have Rafi in Love In Simla, Ek Musafir Ek Hasina with OP (Two solos – ‘Muzhe Dekhakar’ and ‘Humko Tumhare’ apart from the four duets with Asha – three super hits ‘Aap Yuhni Agar Humse Milte Rahe’, ‘Bahut Shukriya’, the beautiful ‘Mai Pyaar Ka Rahi Hun’ and the not so popular ‘O Yaar Zulfonwale’), Phir Wahi Dil Laya Hoon of vintage Rafi and Asha with OP Nayyar (solos – ‘Lakhon hai Nigahon Me’, Title song, ‘Aanchal Me Sazalena Kaliyan’, ‘Aji Kibala Moha Tarama’ and the two duets ‘Door Bahut Mat Jayiye’ and ‘Zulfaki Chaon Me Chehre Ka Ujala Lekar’), Jiddi with SD Burman’s music (Duet with Lata – ‘Champakali’ and solos – ‘Pyyar Ki Manzil Masta Safar’ and ‘Janoo Kya Mera Dil’), Love In Tokyo with SJ (Solos – Title song, the Do Pehlu ‘O Mere Chahe Khuba’ and the sensuous ‘Aajare Aa Jara’), Humsaya with OP (solo – ‘Dil Ki Awaz Bhi Sun’ and the duet with who else but Asha ‘Tera Shukriya’), Ishara with KA ( Do Pehlu ‘Dil Bekaraar Sa Hai’ and the two duets with Lata of which ‘Yeh Abdullah’ became a big hit), Ek Kali Muskayee with Madan Mohan (‘Title song’ and ‘Zulfa Bhikharati Chali Aai Ho’), Jee Chahata Hai with KA (Solo – Title song and the melodious ‘Humne Dekha Hai Tumhe’ and again the title song with Suman and also ‘Meri Zindagi Tere Pyaar Me’ with Suman but picturised mainly on Rajendranath), Shagird with LP (Two hilarious solos ‘Duniya Pagal Hai’ and ‘Bade Miya Deewane’ of course Mannadey sings few lines in the end for IS Johar apart from the lilting duet with Lata – ‘Woh Hai Zara Kafa Kafa’), Bahu Beti with Ravi (that beautiful Ghazal – ‘Subme Shamil Ho Magar’, Door Ki Awaaz with Ravi (Solos – ‘Husna Se Chaand Bhi Sharmaya Hai’, ‘Dil Mera Aaj Kho Gya Hai Kahin’ and ‘Ek Musafir Ko Duniya Me’ on Johny Walker and duets with Asha – ‘Haathon Me Haath’ and ‘Hum Bhi Agar Bachche Hote’), Aao Pyaar Kare with Usha Khanna (Solos – ‘Dilke Aayine Main’ and ‘Ye Jhuki Jhuki Nigahen Teri’ apart from the popular duet with Lata – ‘Tum Kabhi Bagh Me Jaya Na Karo’ in two parts), Saanz Aur Aawaaz with Naushad (the classical solo title song apart from the solo ‘Dilki Mehfil Sazhi Hai’ and two duets with Asha ‘Pyaar Ki Raah Bahar Ki Manzil’ and the super melodious ‘Tum Ishq Ki Mehfil Ho’).

Unfortunately, when KK emerged in the late sixties, Biswajeet switched over to KK in ‘Mai Sundar Hoon’ and other movies and faded away. Similarly the differences between Rafi and OP resulted in OP using Mahendra Kapoor in films like Kismat, (‘Lakhon Hain Yahan Dilwale’ and ‘Aankhon Me Kayamat Ke Kajal’), Kahin Din Kahin Raat (‘Tumhara Chahanewala’, ‘Kamar Patali Nazar Bijli’ and ‘O Yaron Ki Tamanna Hai’ on Johny Walker) in Biswajeet movies and Dil Aur Mohabbat (‘Kahan Se Laayi’ and ‘Haath Aaya Hai’) in Joy Mukherjee movies. Though these songs carried the OP class, still they could not make the impact that Rafi perhaps could have done. That perhaps resulted in the fading of not only Biswajeet and Joy Mukherjee but also OP Nayyar in spite of movies like Ek Baar Muskurado (Can any one forget Rafi’s ‘Zamane Ki Yadon Ne’ a song sung at high pitch) and Sambandh, which also had hit songs with KK, Mahendra, Mukesh and Hemant.

These two actors were also aided by top hit songs of Asha and Lata like ‘Kazra Mohabbatwala’, ‘Aao Huzur Tumko’, ‘Jayiye Aap Kahan Jayenge’, ‘Yeh Hai Reshami’, ‘O Bekarare Dil’, ‘Huzurewala’, ‘Yahi Woh Jaga Hai’, Title song of ‘Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan’, etc. for Biswajeet movies and ‘Ankhon Se Jo Utari’, ‘Udke Pawan Ke Sang Chalungi’, ‘Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar’, ‘Sayonara’, ‘Muzhe Tum Milgaye Humdum’, ‘Ye Meri Zindagi’, etc. for Joy Mukherjee movies.

Any how till it lasted, we had great team of Rafi with Biswajeet and Joy Mukherjee with super entertainment and super melodious songs.

    Dear Ziyaad…
they buy awards as this is business for them… the award winning
songs are forgotten and these purchased songs die…… like hazar rahen
as they breathe on borrowed oxygen… pl. compare :darde dill… it
    will never die….
there are camps in these industry and you cant help if K and A and
    r.d. gave songs to Kishore……
rafi saab came back with great hits which one must not forget … with a
bang … after he had taken a sabbattical after 20 years of constant
singing and being the pereniel No. one…. and there being no challenge…

People will forget many things in life and rafi saab is remembered
after 27 years of his death in a big, big way – which is in comparable
like the man himself… and his popularity is yet growing… awards or
no awards…. bharat ratna or no bharat ratna……
the man and the singer are here to stay – and all his detractors in
life will be washed away….. in this life or soon when they leave
    this world…. forgotten for sure…..

The film “Mahal” starring Dev Anand and Asha Parekh with music by KA had one solo by KK and two duets of KK. The film also had a beautiful qawali by Rafi – ‘Tune Soorat Chipayee, Tune Chilman Girayee’.

    Hi P. Haldar,

Interesting you should mention the RB angle of Rafi refusing to sing for Dilip. Rafi did sing for Dilip in Kranti, “Chana Jor Garam” which came after Bairaag.

Sagina was a perfect chance for SDB to go all out with Rafi in the seventies, but that ofcourse did not work out.

MOHD RAFI IS THE GREATEST SINGER INDIA HAS PRODUCED INDIA MUST BE BE PROUD TO HAVE A SINGER LIKE MOHD RAFI WE SHOULD NOT COMPARE RAFI WITH ANOTHER SINGER
HE HAS SUNG DIFFICULT SONG VERY EASILY HE WAS SO VERSATILE I REMEMBER A CLASSICAL SONG FROM THE FILM MRIG KRISNA THE SONG TITLE IS NAW KALPANA IF ANYONE LISTEN TOTHE SONG HE WILL REALISE THE FORCE OF MOHD RAFI
SOME PEOPLE SAY THAT AFTER ARADHNA THE LEAN YEARS OF RAFI BEGAN I DONT AGREE WITH IT YOU KNOW HOW MANY HITS SONGS RAFI HAS DELIVERED FILM LIKE HEER RANJA WARIS HUMJOLI JAWAB SEEMA NAIHNA MEHMOOB KI MEHENDI AAN MILO SAJNA THE TRAIN HONEYMOON MILAP EKNARI DOROOP AND ROOP TERA MASTANA BENAAM JEEWAN MRITYU AAP AYE BAHAR AYEE LALLKAR GORA AUR KALA PARWANA AND MANY MORE ALL THESE FILM SONGS WAS HITS EVEN AFTER 1970 RAFI SUNG A HUGE NUMBER OF SONG FOR EXAMPLE FOR SHAMMI KAPOOR FOR THE JAWAN MOHABUTH RELEASED IN 1972 HE SUNG FIVE SONG FOR SHASHI KAPOOOR SUNG FOR THE FILM NATHC UTHA SANSAR IN LALLKAR THEIR ARE FOUR SONG AND MANY MORE IT IS ABSOLUTELY FALSE THAT RAFI WAS OVERSHADOWERED BY KK HOW CAN WE FORGOT THE SONG FROM THE FILM SEEMA JAB BHI YE DIL UDHAS HOTA HAI I THINK THIS IS THE BEST SONG RAFI HAS SUNG IN THE SEVENTIES IN MY OPINOIN RAFI WAS THE THE GREATEST SINGER INDIA HAS EVER PRODUCED
IT WAS THE MEDIA WHO WROTE MANY ARTICLES OF KK FAVOUR EVEN FOR THE FILMFARE AWARD THE JURIES HAS DONE UNJUSTICE TO HIM . IN 1980 THREE SUPER HITS SONGS WAS NOMINATED COMPARE TWO FOR KK . KK GOT THE AWARD FOR HAZAR RAHEN THE SONG FROM THE FILM KARZ DARD E DIL WAS THE NUMBER ONE SONG IN 1980 EVEN AFTER RAFI DEATH KK GOT FOUR AWARD IN A ROW SHABBIR KUMAR SUNG MANY HITS SONG. ONE THING I DONT UNDERSTAND SAGAR TITLE WAS AWARDED IN 1986 WHY SUCH AN EASY SONG SHOULD BE AWARDED ANYONE CAN SING IT EASILY

    ref post 33:

That’s why I said I don’t know what the real reasons are. Raju Bharatan had mentioned in an article that at the time of Sagina, Rafi saab had decided not to sing for the thespian anymore. I don’t know what had happened between them; if anything had really happened, they must have had patched up later. Also, don’t discount s. d. burman. If I were in Tapan Sinha’s shoes, I would have just used the beautiful tunes he had created for the Bengali version and asked Rafi to deliver.

  10. prakash shah says:

    Ref.post 30 & 31: Sorry to say both of you.Its not satisfied.
Gopi released b’fore sagina and in gopi md “KA” used mahendra kapoor, for romantic songs and rafi for bhajan under whose suggesion director, actor or MD.SO this question can b ask to Anandji or dilip kumar for our knowledge. As you mentioned that talat etc.were used by dilip kumar , thats ok but after ganga jamna show me single incident dilip without rafi so not justified.
Naushad in “saathi”dropped or replaced Replace Rafi to mukesh? i don’t see any nonavailability of rafi in all songs .So big ? ? ?
So question is there was any disput between Dilip-Naushad v/s Rafi for time being,? Bcoz same naushad given all songs of “ganwar”+ “Taangewala”+”my friend”to rafi as mentioned in my earlier post.
I think After aaradhna’s major hit on screen (Musically)the first music director tried or experiment totally on KK for all the songs is Kalyanji anandji film called “MAHAL”(DEV – AASHA) starrer and that also musically proved hit and all the music directors start to use kk.I think this was the movie of devanand without a single song of Rafi.
Now it is a revolutionary step of MD-KA Or …………?
AS KA then after use kk for shashi, feroz, dharmendra, amitabh, jeetendra, etc.etc
So binuji some or how reach upto real facts and give us some conclusion on this.

  11. H.V.GURU MURTHY says:

I have read some where that it was actually the Director of the movie “Saathi”, A.Subbarao who insisted on Mukesh for Rajendra Kumar much against the wishes of the Music Director Nuashad. It was also given that Naushad was at his wits end while recording ‘Bhool Ja Bhool Ja’ in the voice of Mukesh and Mahendra. Mukesh could not do full justice to the song which was required to be sung at a high pitch.

  12. P. Haldar says:

    Ref. post 28:

Mr. Shah, you raise a good question but I don’t what the actual truth is. I can only speculate. Both Bairag and Sagina were directed by two famous Bengali directors, Asit Sen and Tapan Sinha. The first used Rafi on Dilip for Bairag, but the songs were actually recorded much before the film was released. As to why Kishore was used for Sagina, I have no clue at all. Tapan Sinha had earlier made the Bengali version of the film (Sagina Mahato) with Dilip-Saira in the lead and the songs were composed by him and sung by Anoop Ghoshal (who sang “Tuhhse naraz” in Masoom). The Bengali songs, especially “Chhoti si panchhi”, were major hits and much better than the Hindi ones. If I were to guess, I’d go along with Raju Bharatan here that Rafi saab, at that point in time, had decided not to sing for Dilip Kumar anymore. Among the actors, Rafi saab simply loved Shammi and Dharmendra and had a cordial relationship with Rajendra Kumar. Although Rafi finally became Dilip’s voice, other MD’s like SD and Salil used Talat and Mukesh on Dilip. In that sense, Dilip was much more voice-neutral than say, Shammi, Rajendra and Rajesh. Amitabh Bacchan was also similar in that respect and that’s why you see that Rafi sang so many songs for him during the 1977-80 period. And that would have ensured fair play if Rafi were alive in the 80s because LP would have happily used him for Amitabh. Anyway, I’m including a clip from Sagina Mahato; Dilip was simply brilliant in the film.

    Dear Prash ji :
dilip kumar taking kishores voice is indeed : behti
    ganga me naha le ya to chalti train me chadh jaaye;
the hoarse voice didnt suit dilip at all but s.d.b had his
way – and a chance to kishor which didnt work at all.
I cant read dilips mind nor between the lines…
In the case of rajendra kumar : rafi saabs nonavailability
could be a cause as rajendra kumar, shammi and others
were strongly in the rafi camp for only one reason and
    that is – quality…

    My dear rafians !
please do not waste your precious time in answering and quarreling
with a ‘pucca’ kk bhakt who is frequently changing his names and
    making all of you fool.
i think a period of thousand years will not be sufficient to solve this
    ‘mahabharat’.
so please stop it and write something good and readable on rafi saab
so that we can enjoy our this website.
don’t make your house dirty inviting dirty guests.

  15. prakash shah says:

A thoughts to be analysed : A choosy Dilip kumar has taken voice of KK in tapan sinha’s hit in hindi version of “sagina mohanto” under md SDB,has DK bargain with his image ? or baheti ganga me …….?
IN gopi DK under md KA accepted Mahendra kapoor that was also shocking.
Naushad pre aaradhana taken Mukesh in south production “saathi” for Rajendra kumar is it experiment? The same kumar never bargain or give chance other than rafi for him , is it was an experiment of Naushad ?and same naushad using mukesh in saathi after Mehboob’s “ANDAAZ”Why ?
The same Naushad once again using Rafiji for rajendra kumar brother’s narendra kumar film called “GANWAAR” & “TAANGEWALLA” why?
    Mr.Halder,Mr.binu will you pl.answer satisfactorily.

ROOP tera was picturised on Deb Mukerji
Mukesh given lips in jee chahta hai and ishaaraa.

  17. Anmol Singh says:

I think in ‘Ek Baar Muskura Do’ he used KK’s voice for the song ‘Roop Tera E Sagar Pun Mein Na Samaae’. He did used Mukesh also in 1 or 2 films.

  18. prakash shah says:

    Binuji,

A question to be ask to joy mukherji dat why he never use his (MAMU)kk voice in his movies ?Instead, Almost in his all movies he used Rafis voice.

  19. Raajkumar Akela says:

    Dear prakash,
there is a story behind the “hamsaya” song
    “Dil ki awaz bhi sun…..”
O.P. nayyar, the music composer of this song,
had a break-up with his family. he loved his wife
and children very much, but left them for a second
    lady. ( guess who ?)
During the filming of “Hamsaya” op saab remembered
them and missed them badly…….so he requested the
lyricist to compose this song of his own feeling.
His all time favourite rafi saab was there to give the
final touch to this song….and thus came out a beautiful
song. Bollywood history is its proof.

  20. prakash shah says:

Monty you are wright dat humsaaya has a song “Dil ki aawaz bhi soon apne fassane pe na jaa” a beautyfuly sang by our rafiji ,a marvelously composed and meaningfuly lyrics.

  21. Monty says:

Humsaaya had nice songs by Rafiji picturised on Joy Mukherjee.

  22. prakash shah says:

HUmsaaya is post release to shagird .
The same case happens with visvajit .after kismat his last hit Manmohan desai as a director,he doesn’t got offer from big house and force to come in c grade movies and lastly tried as a producer/director in “galiyo ka raja”and that movie flopped miserably and he dissappear frm industries.I heared years back that he is in property(Land)business at mumbai.

  23. prakash shah says:

Anmol singh:& Binuji: as binu says joy after disaster of his own production try to come back but jeetendra and rajesh khanna established themselves in mean time and his project humsaaya took long time in completion and after disaster he tried to a lot but no takers.so he came in c grade movie like dil aur mahobat(With sharmila) and INspector and others.Ram mukherji (Rani’s father and joy brother)want to start movie and joy lastly came as a director in chhaila babu a rajesh khanna zeenat starrer, same way deb his younger brother’s movies he appeared as sp.appearance in ek baar muskura do.Once upon a time after love in tokyo he was a big threat to even shammi kapoor, but some thing some where goes wrong and he detached from industries.
Binu kindly provide me some feed back why he doesn’t appeared as an actor or director after chhaila babu ?

  24. binus2000 says:

    Anmolji,
Joy lost very heavily in Humsaaya as it was his home production.
It was a financial disaster.. Joy stays in versova and I am on
    talking terms with him…occassionally..

  25. Anmol Singh says:

Possibly the film I missed was ‘Humsaya’ which was released prior to ‘Shagird’ & ‘Ek Baar Muskura Do’, I am not very sure. Can any one help me. ‘Humsaya’ I believe was the start of the down fall of Joy Mukherjee.

After the success of KK after possibly many songs for Biswajeet were sung by him under SJ. Example – ‘Mein Sundar Hun’.

  30. Anmol Singh says:

Rafi-Joy Mukherjee association started in the film ‘Love In Simla’ produced by S Mukherjee, music by Iqbal Qureshi. There after so many hits ‘Ek Musafir Ek Hasina’; ‘Phir Wahi Dil Laya Hun’; ‘Love in Tokyo’; ‘Shagird’; etc. Biswajit of course did not start with Rafi as playback singer. Possibly don’t recall from which film there association started. The ones I recall are ‘Mere Sanam’, ‘April Fool’, ‘Night in London’; etc.

Off course both did try to imitate Shammi Kapoor, but were no where near him in terms of potential and popularity.

But Rafi Saab gave his best to all actors irrespective of what their market standing could be.

  39. binus2000 says:

rafi-o.p the most popular pair from the fifties to late sixties, doled
out dollies at regular intervals – and what songs they were…
the pair gave every other m.d. a run for their money and nothing
    could go wrong..
Over a hundred actors prospered when rafi saab lip-synched for them
and this included – biswajit and joy..
joy was so handsome and lovable . one day : he bumped in to
OP.NAYYAR in a churchgate restaurant , hugged him and said :
here is the composer : jis ne mera life bana diya… this was a few
    years back…..
Joy mukherjis home film Humsaaya flopped and he was on a grand
    financial decline..
Now things are all o.k with the family studio gone and a huge
commercial concrete structure coming up in andheri west – the
hot-spot .. place where land is precious than gold itself.
Coming back to the point… the op.nayyar – rafi rift over a trifle
    saw the downslide of o.p.nayyar.
with lata and rafi not singing for o.p. and asha ready to bump
him : the decline for one of the greatest composer had begun….
what surprised me in the early seventies was – Biswajit rooting
for Kishore in Main Sundar Hoon : music : shankar Jaikishan..
It was school days and the memories are still fresh….

The main point here is rafi saabs contribution to two handsome
bengali heroes. the bengalis loved rafi saab – no end and this
was displayed in rafi saabs live concerts… where people just
flocked and threw money and garlands….
the bengalis truly loved rafi saab like other linguistic groups from
    many parts of the world…

In fact Rafi saab was a miraculous singer. his golden voice was fit for
any face on the screen. not only joy mukherji or bishwajit, but this
voice was the only voice that could have justified song like “gujre hain
aaj ishq me…” for tragedy king dilip kumar…and song like “Kya se kya
ho gaya…” for evergreen dev anand…or song like “zindagi mujhko dikha
de rasta…” for comedy king mehmood. and who can forget johny walker
singing “sir jo tera chakaraye yaa dil dooba jaye…” ?
Great music directors like naushad, madan mohan, op nayyar, khayyam
and laxmikant-pyarelal always gave their first preference to rafi saab.
they ignored few so called great singers of the industry, but never dared
to ignore rafi saab. historyitself is its witness.
Dev anand, shashi kapoor, jitendra, sanjay khan, firoz khan, sanjiv kumar were the most handsome heros of bollywood and i have always
found their personality more dashing whenever the borrowed rafi saab’s
golden voice. and whenever they borrowed any other singer’s voice..i
    found their dashing personality ‘dwarf’.
people say “size does not matter”…may be it is true, but i can bet that
    “Voice does matter”.
a good student will always look for a good teacher…a good doctor will
always try to join a good hospital…a good fisherman will go far in the sea
for a good fishing…likewise a good ear will always search for
a melodious voice like of rafi saab or lata tai.

I’ve read in an old piece that S. K. Mukhejee, Joy’s dad, wanted Rafi to compose music for one of the Filmistan movies. Rafi said that he refused because he didn’t want to go the talat way — from hero to zero. Vey wise decision! We keep talking about Rajendra Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, but it’s incredible how many great songs Rafi sung for these two Bengali heroes. Ekdam zero se hero bana diya. OP’s “aanchal mein saja lena kaliyan” is in my precious top-25 Rafi list; what a song!

Interesting article, Rafi Saheb sang super songs for Joy Mukherjee and Biswajeet, both being Bengalis, Rafi Saheb’s voice suited very well for both actors. True, it was Rafi Saheb’s songs that helped both the actors rise to (mostly) top.
