Joy Mukherjee and Rafi combination would be remembered for generation

Joy Mukerjee and Mohd Rafi

Veteran actor Joy Mukherjee died on 9th March, 2012. He was the son of noted filmmaker Sasadhar Mukherjee and Sati Debi. Sasadhar Mukherjee was the co-founder of Filmalaya Studios.

Joy Mukherjee stormed bollywood films with his debut in the film Love in Simla in 1960. It was directed by RK Nayyar. Iqbal Qureshi composed the music of the film. From that time the everlasting combination of Joy Mukherjee with Mohammad Rafi stormed bollywood music for the next 10 years.

After acting in the films Umeed and Hum Hindustani, Joy Mukherjee stormed bollywood with the film Ek Musafir Ek Haseena in 1962. Raj Khosla directed the film. The magic of OP Nayyar with Rafi made the audience spellbound. All the songs were masterpieces including “aap yuhi agar humse milte rahe”, “phir tere shahar me mitne ko chala aya hoon”, “humko tumhare ishqne kya kya bana diya”, “bahut shukhriya bari meherbani”, “mujhe dekhkar aapka muskurana”, to name a few. The songs just intoxicated the audience. Ek Musafir Ek Haseena the second biggest hit film of 1962.

The Joy Mukherjee, OP Nayyar and Rafi magic continued in the film Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon in 1963. It was produced and directed by Nasir Hussain. Again the songs were masterpieces including “zulf ke chayon me chehereka ujala lekar”, “nazneen bara rangeen hai wada tera”, “banda parwar thamlo jigar”, “lakhon hai nigahon me”, “anchal me saja lena kaliyan”, “aji kibla mohe tarma”, to name a few. It was par excellence. Probably OP Nayyar and Rafi combination was at the zenith. The film ended up being the third biggest hit film of 1963.

In 1964, Joy Mukherjee’s film Ziddi did great business. This time it was directed by Pramod Chakravarty. The music was composed by SD Burman. Rafi’s songs “janu kya mera dil ab kahan kho gaya”, “teri surat se nahi milti kisi ki surat”, “pyar ki manzil mast haseen” were all melodious songs and became superhit. Rafi Joy Mukherjee continued in the films Ishaara, Door Ki Awaaz and Aao Pyar Karen.

Joy Mukherjee again stormed bollywood in the film Love in Tokyo. Shankar Jaikishan’s composition of music in the film rocked bollywood. Lata’s songs “sayonara sayonara”, “hume tum mil gaye humdum” was as popular as Rafi’s  “Japan, love in Tokyo”, “aaja re aa zara aa”, “o mere shahekhuba”, and Manna Dey’s “mai tere pyar me bimar hun kya arz karun”. The westernized andaz of Rafi mesmerized the audience along with Japan’s exotic locations.

Joy Mukherjee and Rafi again created magic in the film Shagird in 1967. This time Laxmikant Pyarellal stormed bollywood. Rafi’s songs “o bare miya diwane”, “o hai zara khafa khafa”, “duniya paagal hai” all created magic. Joy Mukherjee’s online chemistry with Saira Banu attracted the viewers. From Humsaya in 1968, gradually Joy Mukherjee’s box office popularity declined. OP Nayyar composed the music of the film and Rafi’s song “dil ki awaaz na sun” again became hit, but the film did not do great business.

From that time onwards Joy Mukherjee gradually faded out of the industry. His later films like Ek Kali Muskai, Dil Aur Muhabbat, Dupatta, Ek Baar Muskurado did very ordinary business. Rafi sang notable songs in some of these films, but neither the compositions nor the songs did touch the souls of the audience in the same way, the way it did in Love in Tokyo.

Joy Mukherjee had given lips in more than 200 songs of Mohammad Rafi. His songs and the films should be restored to remember the great combination of evergreen Mohammad Rafi with the romantic actor.

Absolutely Souvik sir, I agree with you sir But I want to add we are all Rafi bhakts here The point is message should go to next generation what we know they should also know. Every leading actor wanted to have his voice. It doesn’t matter that were good actors the fact is that they were all leading heroes. Rafi saheb was declared Best singer of the millennium in 2001. since then lot of changes have taken place on the society A whole lot of New generation had come up.
This new generation is FM Generation. Their taste has been developed for kind of songs which are being played these days. I don’t know whether Atif Aslam knows anything about “Sur”. But the fact is that he is popular. The fight is against all these odds so just by writing on our site we may appreciate each others articles. But this is not going to others that is where we are lacking in some newspapers or in magazines popular with youngsters these articles should be published. Now a days everything depends upon commercial value We need to do a combined effort. Rafi saheb has great Fan following even today we can use this and each one of us decides to buy only that newspaper who will publish our articles. That Newspaper will have to think about it because we are in good numbers and it will suit that publisher commercially.
This won’t cost us much and we will only using our Rafi Bhakt society our numbers is our strength . we should have list of all members with contact nos and email_id let us make a beginning .

    Dear Bimanji,
Yes go ahead and publish the article on Joy Mukherjee and Rafi again. The reason I am saying it is if you can make more people of the new generation know about Rafi and Joy Mukherjee they will be benefitted.
I still feel the new generation hardly know that Rafi was the lead singer for all the leading heroes of 40s, 50s, 60s.
Even Raj Kapoor gave lips in more than 40 songs of Mohammad Rafi. Sometimes Rafi lovers start debating whether Joy Mukherjee was a good actor or not. It is irrelevant.
Whatever Rafi had sung for Joy Mukherjee, and whatever Shankar Jaikishan, Naushad Ali, OP Nayyar had composed for Rafi were gems. So the musical quality of the films outweigh other debates. Rafi had sung more than 250 songs for Joy Mukherjee and each and every sung have a different flavour. The songs will remain immortal for ages after ages.

    Dear Vijayji, Jasbirji and Binuji,
    Greetings!
I beg to apologize for not mentioning the tunes of Naushadji in Saaz Aur Awaaz. Actually whatever great Mohammad Rafi sahab had sung for Joy Mukherjee, he had always turned into gold. I tried to give reference to the hit films of Joy Mukherjee where Rafi’s song did create magic. There were other films too which did not do much business but the songs were excellent One example was Humsaya. Rafi’s song “dilki awaz bhi sun” was again very melodious. The songs in these films can be cherished for generations after generations.

sad to hear about loss of romantic hero joy mukherjee,he was one of many film heroes whom rafisaab made them renowned stars over night, rafisaab enjoyed while playbacking for him different songs with varied moods..his all films were great hits..music directors sj,lp,sdb, opn gave golden hits.rafisaab combination with any actor is most memorable n immortal…we are fortunate to enjoy their melodies.in a tribute to joy mukherjee……bahut shukriya badi meherbani meri zindagi mein hazoor aap aye….

  14. vijay bavdekar says:

Rafi sang beautifully for Joy(AS HE ALWAYS DID FOR MANY HEROS) under OPNayyar, Shankar Jaikisan,SD Burman,Ravi,Usha Khanna ,Kalyanji Anandji,Laxmi-Pyare etc etc,but one must not forget the songs Rafi rendered for Naushadji in SAAZ AUR AWAAZ.Really the songs like Saaz ho tum awaz hun mai, Dilki mahfil saji hai chale aayiye and Tum ishk ki mehfil ho tum husna ka jalwa ho and Pyar ki rah bahar ki manzil (Both with Asha) were outstanding and were “Jara Hatke” from Joy style.Recently we lost Devsahab,Shammiji,Ravi and now Joy,But one thing is sure, in Heaven, the Almighty must be enjoying SURSWAR mahfil of these great maestros and legends.

  15. Souvik Chatterji says:

    Dear Salimji, Vinodjji,
    Thanks for your comments.
Very significantly not only the songs in the films of joy mukherjee sung by Mohammad Rafi were super hit the films ranked in the first 5 biggest grossers of the early 60s.
Ek Musafir Ek Haseena in 1962 was among the first 5 highest grossers.
Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon in 1963 was among the first 5 highest grossers.
Ziddi in 1964 was among the first 10 highest grossers.
Same was the case with Love in Tokyo and Shagird.
So the music in all these films made huge impact and Rafi and Joy Mukherjee combined rocked bollywood films in the 60s.
If Dilip Kumar, Rajender Kumar, Bharat Bhushan, Pradeep Kumar were incomplete without Mohammad Rafi, Joy Mukherjee’s success was totally related to magnificant standard of singing by maestro Mohammad Rafi.

    Very Fantastic Article Souvik Ji,
In fact Rafi Sahab was the Voice of so many actors in Indian film industry. His voice matched on almost every actor. Of course Handsome actor Joy Mukherjee was also an example. Rafi Sahab sung so many songs for Joy & most of the songs were hit at that time & even today also these songs are remembered. Great Rafi Sahab was fabulous, awesome, excellent, super talented, fantastic singer. Nobody can sing like him. I would like to say that there is one MOON, one SUN & one MOHAMMED RAFI SAHAB in this universe.

sorry a correction this song was picturised on Mehmood although Joy was the hero.

  18. salim k says:

Joy mukerjee once said in an interview that Rafi Sahab was his voice.
All great songs but one song that is very special for me is “mere jangli kabootar. mera dil ek manzar, basi hai jiske andar tesri tasveer jana na ke main hoon tera deewana”.

It is a billion dollar experiece when Raf Sahab says the words ” jana na”.

    Dear Bimaji,
Thanks a lot for the reply.
I think much had not been written about Rafi and Joy Mukherjee combination. There were lot of composers who had contributed in Joy Mukherjee’s films including OP Nayyar, Shankar Jaikishan, SD Burman, Laxmikant Pyarellal, Kalyanji Anandji, etc. Rafi had contributed in most of the films. There is lot of publicity which is required in respect of Joy Mukherjee and Rafi combination.
