Mohd Rafi, Feroze Khan

In 1965, 44 years back, actor Feroz Khan publicly declared on-screen, Hum Tum Se Judaa Ho Ke, Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro Ke in the golden voice of Rafi Saheb. But in last 44 years he lived like a King both on-screen and off-screen. On Monday, last 27th April, he died at the age of 69, in his Bangalore farm house after battling with life due to cancer for last one year.

Hum Tum Se Judaa Ho Ke, Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro Ke
Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro Ke……..

Duniyaa Badee Zaalim Hai, Dil Tod Ke Hansatee Hai 2
Ek Mauj Kinaare Se, Milane Ko Tarasatee Hai
Kah Do Naa Koyee Roke 2
Hum Tum Se Judaa Ho Ke, Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro Ke
Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro ke

Sochaa Thaa Kabhee Do Dil, Milakar Naa Judaa Honge 2
Maaloom Na Thaa Hum Yoon, Naakaama-e-wafaa Honge
Kismat Ne Diye Dhokhe 2
Hum Tum Se Judaa Ho Ke, Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro Ke
Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro ke

Waade Naheen Bhoolenge, Kasmein Naheen Todenge 2
Ye Tay Hai Ke Hum Dono, Milanaa Naheen Chhodenge
Jo Rok Sake Roke 2
Hum Tum Se Judaa Ho Ke, Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro Ke
Mar Jaayenge Ro Ro Ke………

Rafi Sahib was matchless and heart-touching in the above famous tragic song from Dimple Films’ EK SAPERA EK LUTERA beautifully picturised on dazzling & stylish actor Feroz Khan. The song played on-screen on helpless Feroz Khan (SAPERA) when he was separated from his lover Kumkum and captured in a cave by Feroz Khan (LUTERA) himself. The song is one of my personal favourite Rafi gems which authentically depict extremely emotional feelings of a helpless lover in a hurtful situation.

In the film the actor played his first double role. The storyline of the film: A nuisance has been pursuing the Ruler of Sunder Gadh that his first-born son would murder him. When his wife is taken for delivery, he informs the nurse that if the newborn happens to be a boy then she should exchange with the other boy born at the same time. Incidentally the Queen gave birth to twins. Nurse gave Sunder one of the twin saying that she has exchanged it.

King left the baby in the jungle assuming that the wild animals would eat the baby. Fortunately for the baby group of snake charmers saved him and Mohan (Feroz Khan) grew up with them and his twin brother Vijay Pratap (Feroz Khan) being the heir prince grew up enjoying all the royal luxuries. Vijay would take to any unfair means to get what he wanted. Radha (Kumkum), who likes Mohan, accidentally ran into Vijay whom she mistook for Mohan. Before Radha could realize her grave blunder she found herself in Vijay’s palace as a captive of his footloose lust.

Mohan in search of Radha reaches the palace and meets his look like. Both were unaware of the fact that they were real brothers. The film was written and directed by Naresh Kumar (brother of Rajendra Kumar) with musical score by female composer Usha Khanna and lyrics by Asad Bhopali. It was the one of the best film in which Rafi Saheb lent his voice for Feroz Khan in all the songs and the actor played his only double role.

The other Rafi gems from the film: Tera Bhi Kisi Pe Dil Aaye, Phir Koi Tujhe Bhi Tarpaye Allah Kare”, Mera Ban Jaye Koi, Yeh Meri Taqdeer Nahin” solos by Rafi and the title song Ek Sapera Ek Lutera” a duet by Rafi & Suman Kalyanpur.

Rafi Saheb rented his golden voice for fashionable Feroz Khan in very few films: Main Shadi Karne Chala (1962), Oonche Log (1965), Ek Sapera Ek Lootera (1965), Main Wohi Hoon (1966), Mela (1971), Sharafat Chod Di Maine (1976), Nagin (1976), Qurbani (1980). Feroz Khan started his career with the golden voice of Rafi Saheb like all other actors in the Industry and Rafi Saheb rendered some magnificent songs in his initial films. But God knows why the actor converted to Mukesh and Kishore Kumar for playback in late 1960s and 1970s.

Feroz Khan was born on September 25, 1939 in Bangalore. After schooling from Bangalore, he went to Bombay and made his film debut as a second Hero in DIDI (1960) for which he got Filmfare Best Debut Award. In early 1960s, he played second lead in most of films. His first hit film was Phani Majumdar’s OONCHE LOG in 1965. In the same year, he also played the role of a sacrificing lover in the musical hit ARZOO starring Rajendra Kumar and Sadhana. In Yash Chopra’s AADMI AUR INSAAN, he played the negative role with Dharmendra, Saira Banu & Mumtaz for which he won his first Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award in 1970.

He also acted together with his real-life brother Sanjay Khan in hit films: Upasana (1971), Mela (1971) and Nagin (1976). In Upasana, Mukesh Saheb was the voice of Feroz Khan and in Mela & Nagin, Rafi Saheb was the voice of Feroz Khan. The hunting Rafi-Lata duet from Mela, “Rut Hai Milan Ki Saathi Mere Aare, Mohe Kahi Le Chal Bahoon Ke Sahare” picturised on Feroz Khan and Nikita stunningly in a rainy night. The romantic Rafi-Lata duet from Nagin, “Hapte Mahine Barsoo Puranee Nahin, Sadiyo Se Tere Mere Yarane Ho” also well picturised on Feroz Khan and Mumtaz in a legitimate place.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Feroz Khan was the top star in Hindi films, often directed and starred in many of his films. He became producer-director with APRADH in 1972 starring self, Mumtaz, Prem Chopra, Helen. He became victorious as a producer, director and star in 1975 with his blockbuster hit DHARMATMA, which was inspired by Hollywood film THE GOODFATHER and it was the first Indian film to be shot in Afghanistan.

The 1980 film QURBANI was the biggest hit of his career where he launched the Pakistani Pop Singer Nazia Hassan with her unforgettable track “Aap Jaisa Koi Mere Zindegi Mein Aaye, Tu Baat Ban Jaiye”. The popular Rafi-Asha Bhosle romantic duet from the film, “Kya Dekhte Ho, Surat Tahmari, Kiya Sahate Ho, Sahaat Tuhmari” well picturised on Feroz Khan and Zeenat Aman. In fact, it was the last song by Rafi Saheb for the actor, producer, director and editor.

He continued directing and acting in Janbaaz (1986), Dayavan(1988), Yalgaar(1992), then he took a long break for 11 years from acting in films. In 1998, he launched his son Fardeen Khan in Prem Aggan which was a box office failure. In 2000, he got the Filmfare Lifetime Achievment Award. In 2003, he made his acting comeback as well as produced and directed JANASHEEN, starred with his son Fardeen. He again starred with his son in Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena (2005) and he made his last film appearance in multi-starred blockbuster Welcome (2007).

In my school days in early 1980s, I always preferred to view Feroz Khan Films for his style of action, romance, and horse-riding like cow boyish parade. Though he was not considered as a superstar, he would be immortal for his unmatchable style emulated in his movies for which he was called “Cowboy of the East”. His spirit will take rest in the heaven and may meet soul of Rafi Saheb, his voice once upon a time. We pray God for eternal peace of both the legend’s soul in the Heaven.

  1. I wish I could send/donate some funds for Late Mr. Feroz Khan’s pets. I have several pets at my house and they are part of the family. If someone could give this message to his Son Mr. Fardeen Khan or brother Mr. Sanjay Khan, I would appreciate that.

Living abroad, I could not read/or watch for long time regarding Indian Cinema especially when I was in East Europe. Now I live in USA. I have just recovered myself from Breast Cancer. I understand what late Mr. Khan’s family went through that he passed away so early in age due to cancer. He remains always with us. His films are great with action. May his soul rest in peace.

    Nice article Mr. Biman Baruah.

Biman, to your question: God knows whe Feroze Khan “converted to Mukesh and Kishore Kumar in late 60s and 70s, the answer really is simple. Feroze Khan was usually stereotyped into doing the role of the hero’s friend o foil who sacrifies his love or life at the end of the story. Feroze Khan fame mainly rests on his roles as Producer-Director of fine movies. His QURBANI had become a legendary success and his stock rose up. Not to speak of his champagne parties at the Taj Mahal Hotel, Bombay at the huge success of this film. Nazia’s AAP JAISA KOEE MEREE… was truly a chartbuster song in that movie. DHARMATMA is one film I personally liked the best among his movies – thanks to that Afghanistan romance and the beautiful Hema Malini and his inspiration from GODFATHER which incidentally remained banned in India for 12 years.

Generally, what is worth remembering here is that most movies of the heroes are remembered for the songs of Rafi Sahaab. So EK SAPERA EK LUTERA also falls under that category. How can we indeed forget: HAMM TUMSE JUDAAH HOKE….
