Happy Birthday Rafi Sahab (Pheeku)

This report on the birthday celebrations of Rafi Sahab in Delhi was contributed by Mr. Zorawar Chhugani.

These words echoed in the atmosphere when the pineapple cake with “Happy Birthday Rafi Sahab (Pheeku)” written on it was cut by the members of Rafi Foundation Memorial Society, Delhi celebrating 84th birthday of the legend.

Members of Rafi Foundation Memorial Society in Delhi celebrating 84th birthday of the legend on 24th December 2008 (3).jpgIt was a day of enthusiasm and celebration for everybody around as it was birthday party and that too of a person whom they have been admiring, loving more than themselves.

Members of Rafi Foundation Memorial Society in Delhi celebrating 84th birthday of the legend on 24th December 2008 (18).jpgIt was about 5 in the evening when the members of orchestra started pouring in alongwith members of the foundation. The sound, the orchestra were ready within minutes for the members to start the function.

As usual, Mr. Triloki Nath, President, RFMS started the function with his magical words about Rafi Sahab and Mr. Pawan, Jt. Secy. appropriately invited Mr. Ashok (the eldest member of the foundation) to start with a number from the film Dil Ek Mandir (Jaane Wale Kabhi Nahin Aate….).

Members of Rafi Foundation Memorial Society in Delhi celebrating 84th birthday of the legend on 24th December 2008 (8).jpgBhanu of Chak De Shahar Di Kudiyan, Gali De Gunde fame (telecast on 9X channel) was also there in the party and rendered songs like Tujhko Pukare Mera Pyar (Neel Kamal), Deewana Hua Badal (Kashmir Ki Kali), etc. Responding to the applaud of other members for his singing, he credited Rafi Sahab for all the fame he has got.

Unusually, Mr. Pawan, an ardent fan of Rafi Sahab, sang Mukesh’s version in the song Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya accompanied by Aatima (Suman Kalyanpur version) and Zorawar Chhugani, Gen. Secy. (Mohd Rafi version).

Members of Rafi Foundation Memorial Society in Delhi celebrating 84th birthday of the legend on 24th December 2008 (19).jpgMr. G.B.Mathur uttered some beautiful words for Rafi Sahab and on the request of other members going against medical advise (not to sing) sang a beautiful number Saathi Haath Badana (Naya Daur).

Dr. U.K. Sadhoo was at his best with sentimental numbers like Main Yeh Sochkar Uske Dar Se Utha Tha (Haqeeqat) and Tu Mere Saamne Hai (Suhagan).

Mr. Natesan, PRO, RFMS performed a beautiful number Tu Hindu Banega Na Musalman Banega (Dhool Ka Phool).

Members of Rafi Foundation Memorial Society in Delhi celebrating 84th birthday of the legend on 24th December 2008 (14).jpgMr. Naresh, Treasurer, in his ever charming voice and full throttle rendered Teri Galiyon Mein (Hawas) and a non film hit Main Gwalo Rakhwalo Maiya.

Then after a lot of numbers followed before Mr. Ashish Kapoor, VP came on the stage (usually he stays away from the stage) to recite a poem on his mentor, Rafi Sahab and he was delighted to do so.

I also tried to do justice to some love songs like Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (Title Song)
and Tum Jo Hue Mere Humsafar (12’O Clock).

Finally it was time to finish the party and bid adius and amigos to the ever smiling Rafi Sahab………….

    There should be a national campaign for awarding Bharat Ratna to Rai Sahab posthumously and a memorial in the main business town of Mumbai.

    Rafi sahib is tallest like statue of liberty(USA) in the music world.Article of Mr.vijay kapoor about rafi was indeed touching,what a great human he was.see the attitude of todays singers after one hit song.I wish if some one tell me name of films of songs, Bhala karne wale bhalai kiaja and Ajab hai dastan teri yeh jindagi sung by rafi sahib,anticipated thanks

    rafi foundation memorial society, new delhi you deserve all the kudos for organizing such a maginificent function marking the 84th birth anniversary of rafi sahab. my personal congratulations to zorawarbhai, ashishbhai, naresh sharmabhai, trilokinathji, natesanji and all other members of this great organization of rafi sahab. i have on an earlier occasion remarked that the members of rafi foundation memorial society, new delhi sing with all the sincerity and passion which i had been able to see for myself during my last visit to new delhi in july 2008 and organizing such a wonderful event, so eloquently and poetically narrated by zorawarbhai, deserves all the appreciation. members of rafi foundation, hyderabad chapter all join me in congratulating to each and every member of your pathbreaking organization. keep up the flag of rafi sahab high as you always have been doing.

    good evening n thanks a lot for sharing of great musical event which is too a great tribute to rafi saheb on his 84th birthday. After 28 years of his demise, the pice of songs mentioned are still a fresh one n always charming & refreshing us. I appreciate all the activities of Rafi Foundation, Delhi.
