Birthday Tribute to Rafi Sahab

Doston Adaab, Namaskaar. Aaj ke karyakram ke zariye ham Rafi Sahab ka salgirah ka jashn mana rahein hein. Rafi Sahab ke beshumaar chahne walon ke liye dec 24, 1924, voh tareeq hai jab na sirf ek bemisaal kalakaar ka janam huva, balki sangeet ka ek naya daur shuru huva. Aaj ki program mein Rafi Sahab ke gaaye huve na sirf gair filmi gaane hein, saare rare category ke gaane hein, aur kuch gaane aap peheli dafaa sun rahein honge.

Ham program shuru karte hein, ek bahut hi khubsurat naat se, jiski jhalki maine upload kiya tha. Mujeh behad khushi hai ab yeh gaana mil gaya hai, Allah Mere Allah, Duniya Mein Meri Aabroo Rakhna Mere Allah. Talat Sahab yaane ke Talat Mehmood Ne Kaha Tha, Rafi Sahab Ke Baare Mein, Unhone Deen Aur Duniya Dono Ko Sambhala, magar is gaane mein, Duniya Aur Duniyadaari Ka Ansh bhi nahin. Is gaane ko sunkar lagta hai, Rafi Sahab Uparwale Se Guftagu Kar Rahe The.

Allah Mere Allah, Duniya Mein Meri Aabroo Rakhna Mere Allah…

Pichle Saal Maine Ek Gaana upload kiya tha, jo mein, bachpan mein sunakarta tha. Kayi Salon taq mein us gaane ko talaash karta raha, aur aakhir is gaane ki recording mili Priyaji se. Kya shaandaar tohfa tha voh, magar ham dono us gaane ki recording sound quality se khush nahin the. Kuchhee hafte pehele maine HF ke doston ko bataaya ke mein kuch dino ke liye Hindustan jaa raha hun, tho jawab mein Priyaji ne kaha, vaise tho Dilli jaarahe ho, ho sake tho us dukaan pe jaana jo puraane gaanon ke liye mashoor hai; Ho sakta hai unke paas yeh gaana hai. Tho maine waqt nikaala, aur Dilli ke Meena Bazaar ki gandi galiyon se guzarte huve, us dukaan par pahuncha aur meri nazar padi us record ke chehere par, tho dil hi dil mein khushi se jhooom utha.

Naqaab Rukh Se Hataayen Mere Naseeb Kahan…

Ussi record ko palat kar ham sunte hein, Armaan machal rahe hein Dil-e-beqaraar mein…

Jaise ke aap jaante hein 1948 mein Gandhiji ki hatya ke baad, Rafi Sahab ne Bapu Ki Amar Kahani record kiya tha. Waise hi Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ki dehanth ke baad, Rafi Sahab ne yeh aansu bhara gaana gaaya tha, Karti Hai Fariyaad Yeh Dharti, Kayi Hazaaron Saal, Tab Hota Hai Jaa Kar Paida, Ek Jawahar Lal.

Karti Hai Fariyaad Yeh Dharti…

Rafi Sahab har kisam ke gaane gaaye, filmi gaane, ghazal, geet, qawalli, naat, bhajan, pop n rock, desh bhakti ke gaane, vagera vagera, magar shaayad aap yeh nahin jaante, ke Rafi Sahab, Bharatiya Sarkaar ke Dharkhwast par bhi gaane gaaye. Tho Lijiye Suniye, ek gaana jo Rafi Sahab ne family planning department ke liye record kiya tha, saath derahi hai Asha Bhonsle.

Hamna Sochenge Apne Bachhon Ki… Lal Trikon…

Election se ladne ke liye India ke Congress walon ne, Rafi Sahab ke lokpriyatha ki Sahayatha li. Suniye ek gaana jo election campaign mein sunaayi dethi thi. Janta ko election meetings ke taraf kheenchlaane ke liye, Rafi Sahab ke gaaye huve gaane sunate the. Jin Political parties congress ke khilaaf lade the, unke liye is bemisaal awaaz ka muqabla karne mumkin tho nahin tha, aur congress walon ne aasaani se election jeet li.

Watan Ke Naam Ke Liye, Gareeb Awaam Ke Liye…

Aap Shayad Soch rahen honge, gaane hi sunarahe hein, aur geetkaar ka naam, sangeetkaar ka naam nahin batarahein hein. Sach yeh hai ke mujeh khud pata nahin. Mujeh matlab hai sirf Rafi Sahab ki Awaaz, Gayaki aur phan se. Ab suniye ek gaana bilkul Rafiana andaaz mein. Agar isi gaane ko kisi film ke liye record kiya hota, aur Shammi Kapoor par picturize kiya hota, tho yeh gaana bahut mashoor hojaata.

Shabab Leke Voh Jaan-e-shabaab Aaya Hai… Jaadu Hai Meetha Meetha…

Observing Rafi Sahab on stage during live performances, I noticed a couple of peculiar manarisms, characteristic of him. Normally only when they appear on the stage for the first time, do artist greet the audiences with folded hands, in the jesture of Namaste. After each break during the concert, they just walk on the stage and continue performing. But Rafi Sahab each time he returned to the stage would once again greet the audience with a namaste and at the conclusion of the sond rendering, as the auditorium echoed to rapturous applauds and whistles and cheers, Rafi Sahab at his haronium would smile, nod his head gently a couple of times, and rock back and forth lightly as if to say to himself, job well done. Showcasing his immense versatality, here is a song in Konkani, the language of Goa and Mangalore.

Kantar korun bismojesthaar…Kalzan Tanokgelo…

Rafi Sahab ke gaaye huve anginath Patriotic songs hein, jaise ke, Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna Ab Hamaare Dil Mein Hai, Aawaaz Do Ham Ek Hain, Karchale Ham Fida Jaano Tan Saathiyon. Ab Suniye bahut hu purana, desh bhaktipurv gaana, Aaj Kasauti Ki Bela Hai, Nikal Pado Maidaan Mein.

Aaj Kasauti Ki Bela Hai, Nikal Pado Maidaan Mein…

Mana Tara Pata Hari Darshan Ko Aaj, remains the most moving, memorable bhajans, in the annals of hindi film music. I remember the post I had written that no other singer can give me the goosebumps, bring tears to my eyes, as this devout muslim singing Suno Seeta Ki Kahani. Its amazing how Rafi Sahab identifies himself with the lines of the next song and imparts such depth of feeling while giving expression to Child Krishna’s lame excuses to his Mother, after playing Naughty Pranks.

Mein Gwalo Rakhawalo Maiyya, Maakhan Naahin Churaayo…

Ab Suniye Ek Aur Gair Filmi Gaana, Kaash Khwabon Mein Hi Aajaayo, Bahut Tanha Hoon Bahut Tanha Hoon. Shayad apko yeh gaana yaad dilaayegi film Sharaabi ka voh gaana, mujeh le chalo aaj us gali mein.

Kaash Khwabon Mein Hi Aajaayo, Bahut Tanha Hoon…

Kya Tumne Dil Liya Nahin, Mera Jawaab Do, Khamosh Kyon Ho Jaane Tamanna, Jawab Do. Just listen Rafi Sahab singing the next lines, Tarsogi Tum Hi Pyaar Ke Nazaron Ke Vaasate, Kya Hoga Berukhika Nateeja, Jawab Do.

Kya Tumne Dil Liya Nahin, Mera Jawaab Do…

Rafi Sahab ke Inteqaal ke baad, Lataji ne kaha, Sangeet Ka Ek Yug Beet Gaya, Magar mein is vichaar se sehmat nahin hoon. Mein is baat ko nahin manta. Rafi Sahab ko guzre huve pacheez Saal huve, magar, aaj bhi, har din, har raat, unki awaaz sunaayi deti hai, zameen par hi nahin, aasmaan par bhi. Kuchi din pehele, teez hazaar feet ke unchaayi par, havaayijahaz ke Inflight program mein, main Rafi Sahab ki awaaz sun raha tha.

Agar Mujeh Adhikaar Dedo, Tho Husn Par Ik Geet Kehedoon…

Kayi Mahaan Kalakaar, Kalakaar jinki awaaz, jinki kala ki ham tareef karte hein. Magar unmein se bahut hi kam hai, jinke baare mein yeh kaha jaata hai, voh mahaan insaan hai, mahaan aatma hai. Jab bhi film aur music industry ke log, Rafi Sahab ke baare mein bolte hein, hamesha yeh kehete hein, ke Rafi Sahab na sirf ek mahaan kalakaar the, ek achha bhala nek insaan bhi the.

Maine socha tha agar maut se pehele pehele…

Ab tho yeh asambhav lagta hai, magar sochiye, agar Rafi Sahab ne kamiyabi na hasil ki, unki awaaz ki pehechan nahin huyi, phir bhi mein samajh tha hun, duniya ke manch par na sahi, gumnaami mein bhi, bambai ki galiyon mein ek mahaan insaan raha kiya hota. Bemisaal gayak, bemisaal insaan the Rafi Sahab. Teri Aawaaz Ki Jaadugari Se, Na Jaane Kis Jahan mein Khogaya Hoon, Na Jaane Kis Jahan Mein Khogaa Main. Peechle Saal, Rafi Sahab Ke Janam Din Par, mohdrafi.com ke liye maine ek item likha tha, jo mein padkar sunatha hoon. December 24, 1924, Chrismas Eve, Church Bells must have peeled across the contonment towns of British India. Holymas would have been said, greetings would have been exchanged, Uniformed soldiers and gowned ladies must have partied at glittering balls. In keeping with the nature of people of the land, aspects of the firangi culture, were absored by the natives. The celebration of the birth of the savior long ago in a distant land became part of the local tradition, without a religious convocation. Badain was observed by one and all as a festivity, an occassion for gaiety, gifts and feelings. These celebrations would surely have been ignored by one family located in the far flung northern provinces of the Raj. Their own personal celebrations were anticipated awaiting a birth in the family. The wale of the new born is caused for joy; it signifies life and hope. We can surmise that this baby’s howl was at high decibels. Perhaps in later years the lisps and wobblings of the infant was not exactly musical. Not even his shouts and screams as a growing child. But teenage years and talent and tutorge, transformed an ordinary insignificant birth 80 years ago into one that is commemorated. The sound of those church bells faded into the distance that very night. The voice of the new born still resolves. Happy birthday Rafi Sahab.
