It was one of the most popular and enjoyable marriage party songs of HINDI FILM MUSIC from the Devendra Goel’s film AADMI SADAK KA sung by Mohammed Rafi with composer Ravi, actor Deban Verma & Chorus. In the song, Rafi Sahab lent his voice for Shatrughan Singha, Ravi Sahab for Sujeet Kumar and Devan Verma for himself. The song was well composed by RAVI in the lyrics of Verma Malik. The beautiful lyrics of the song depicts the great proverb, “marriages are fixed on heaven” and there is no task of human hands in case of marriage. Another shaddi related Rafi-Lata duet, “Tera Beetuwa Jawan Hoigawa, Ke Maa Mera Shaddi Karaide” from Subhash Ghai’s GAUTAM GOVINDA also picturised on Shatrughan Singha.

Marriage is a social union or legal contract between individuals that creates kinship. It is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually intimate and sexual, are acknowledged in a variety of ways, depending on the culture or subculture in which it is found. This union may also be called matrimony, while the ceremony that marks its beginning is usually called a wedding which is the public declaration of love. It plays a very important role in the life of human being which is the 3rd stage of human life and is a great time of enjoyment of food, costume, relationship & melody. The marriage or wedding songs can be mainly classified as: RAJAMAANDI (Engagement) Songs, BARAT (Marriage Procession) Songs, BIDAYEE (Goodbye) Songs, TOHAR (Celebration) Songs, HONEYMOON Songs, etc. Legendary Rafi Sahab had sung all types of Shaddi Songs of HINDI FILM MUSIC beginning from “Chode Babul Ka Ghar” from film BABUL (1950) composed by Naushad Ali. The above multi-singer song was from Manmohan Desai’s SUHAAG, sung by Mohammed Rafi, Shailendra Singh & Asha Bhosle picturised on Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor,Rekha and Parveen Babi in a attractive London’s garden. The song was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in the beautiful lyrics of Aanad Bakshi

It is one of the most excellent marriage procession song sung by Rafi Sahab with Chorus from GHULAM BEGAM BADSHAH. The song portrays traditional Indian culture and egocentric horse riding by the “dulha” with the pedestrians in the marriage procession. The following amusing marriage procession song sung by Rafi Saheb from from CHAUDVIN KA CHAND was very well picturised on comedian Jhoney Walker.

Rafi Sahab was emotionally peerless in the above song from NEEL KAMAL which was in the background of film and picturised on Balraj Sahani and Waheeda Rahman. The song was composed by RAVI and auspiciously few days before recording of this song, Rafi Sahab’s daughter’s marriage ceremony was held. As a result, there is tremendous real life touching outlook of Mohammed Rafi in the get up of the song. He truly wept during recording of the song and whenever the song was played onscreen or radio tears automatically reflects in the eyes of audiences or listeners. He got the National Award for the song in 1968.

The song is from Rajkumar Kohli’s popular horror film, JANNI DUSHMAN with huge star cast which was played in the background a number of times in the film while at the times of wedding of different actresses. In the long time suspense drama, this song was the only peace of mind for audience with poignant singing by Rafi Saheb. The song was nominated for Filmfare Best Singer Award in 1979 which was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in the lyrics of Varma Malik.

In the above celebration song Rafi Sahab was peerless for the actor which was picturised on Sanjeev Kumar from the film KHILONA. The song was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in the heart touching lyrics of Anand Bakshi.

This celebration song from the film DHAKAN is a best aspiration in the voice of Rafi Sahab to a good friend for getting a new life partner on marriage which was picturised on Sanjay Khan.

Both the celebration songs mentioned above from the film Khilona and Dhakan had heartbreaking climax, since the lady love of heroes, Alka and Mumtaz married to villain Shatrughan Singha & Roopesh Kumar respectively in obligatory situations. The song from film, PAAK DAMAN “Mubarak Ho Dulha, Tujhko Yeh Shaddi” can also be added to the category of celebration song.

It was the beautiful romantic song sung by Rafi Sahab from director Mohan Kumar’s debut film AMAN picturised on Rajendra Kumar & Saira Banu in a honeymoon night. The following popular “madhu chandrika”, Rafi –Asha duet from HIMMAT was beautifully picturised on Jeetendra and Mumtaz :

There are also great popular “Shaddi songs” of Hindi Film Music by other legendary playback singers. Melody queen Lata Mangeshkar’s voice with “Raja Ki Aayeegi Barat, Rangili Hogi Raat” from Raj Kapoor’s AAH hit the Indian Screen which is still remembered in wedding ceremonies. The other notable shaddi numbers are “Main Tu Bhul Chali Babul Ka Desh” from SARASWATI CHANDRA and “Babul Ka Yeh Ghar Gori , Bas Kuchh Din Ka Thikaana Hai” from DAATA sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Mukesh Sahab sung the sorrow background number, “Chali Re Sajni Ab Kyaa Soche, Kajra Na Baha Jayee Rote Rote” in BOMBAY KA BABU composed by S D Burman in the well written lyrics of Majrooh Sultanpuri. The humorous Mukesh-Lata duet, “Begani Shaddi Main, Abdullah Deewana, Aisee Manmuajee Ko Mushkil Hai Samjana” from JIS DESH MAIN GANGA BEHTI HAI was picturised on Raj Kapoor and Padmini. Another important Mukesh solo, “Behna O Behna, Teri Doli Mein Sajaonga, Teri Jayegee Barat, Hogi Aakhoon Main Barsat” from AADALAT was picturised on superstar Amitabh Bachchan.

The Rafi Sahab’s great admirer Mahendra Kapoor sung with Chorus “Dulhan Chali, O Pahan Chali Teen Rangoo Ka Choli” in Manoj Kumar’s POORAB AUR PASCHIM which was a marriage cum patriotic song. Another song by Kapoor, “Doli Chadh Ke Dulhan Sasural Chali” from DOLI is also a momentous shaddi song.

The Kishor Kumar number, “Meri Pyari Beheniya , Banegee Dulhaniya, Ho Sadke Aayeega Dulhee Raja , Bhaiya Raja Bajayeega Bajaa” from Manmohan Desai’s SACCHA JUHTHA is one of the best shaddi song of Hindi Film Music, well picturised on Rajesh Khanna. The Kishore-Lata duet, “Le Jayenge Le Jayengee Dilwalee Dulhania Le Jayengee” from CHOR MACHAYE SHORE is a best foot trapping party shaddi song composed by Ravindra Jain picturised on Shashi Kapoor & Mumtaz. The Kishore Kumar shaddi number, “Suno Bhai Barati , Dulha Dulhan Ko Akela Zara Choddo, Khul Ke Dil Ki Baat Kare Jeevan Saathi, Suno Bhai Barati” ends Pramod Chakraborty’s WARRANT which was beautifully picturised on evergreen Dev Anand & Zeenat Aman in open Motor Car. “Khana Milega Peena Milega, Bhaiya Ki Shaddi Hai Saab Kuch Milega, Nachoo Mere Yaar, Gaon Mere Yaar, Jhoomoo Yaar” from MALIK sung by Kishore Kumar picturised on comedian Devan Verma.

“Hai Mubarak Aaj Ka Din, Raat Aayee Hai Suhani , Shadmani Ho Shadmani” from BOXER, “Mujhe Dulhe Ka Sehra Aanee Do” from SOHNI MAHIWAL , “Mehndi Lagake Rakhna, Doli Sajake Rakhana” from DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE and “Chote Chote Bhaiyoon Ke Bade Bhaiya, Aaj Banega Kisi Ke Chaiya” from HUM SAATH SAATH HAIN are notable shaddi songs of Hindi Film Music of 1980s and 1990s. Moreover, in recent times the films based on shaddi theme like “Raaja Ki Ayeegi Barat”, “Aaj Mere Yaar Ki Shaddi Hai”, “Mujshe Shaddi Karogi”, “Band Baza Barat” and “Tanu Weds Manu” got mass popularity.

It is not viable to cover up all the wedding related songs in a single article, but I tried my best to include all popular Mohd. Rafi Shaddi songs and other Hindi Film shaddi songs in the article for the music lovers of golden era. The music companies having copyrights of these shaddi songs should preserve the songs in form of CD or DVD forever which can be specifically used in wedding ceremonies.
