Rafi sahib not only was a great singer but also a symbol of humanity, resulting in which many times O.P. Nayyar ( A strict M.D. & who did not surrender lifetime before any one ) felt down before Rafi sahib due to his humanity behavior.

CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF ACE MUSICIAN PAPU KHAN …..

ACE SAXOPHONIST, GREAT musician and music conductor mr papu khan succumbed to illnes yesterday. may his sould rest in peace.

a constant player with laxmikant-pyarelal team, papu khan was very much visible at shanmukhananda hall music shows as the “conductor” of the show.

he was a very quiet persons and his “art” would often speak for him. after watching mr khan at the above venue i had a desire to work with this great artist atleast once – but that will not happen now.

i hope the musician community in mumbai would pay adequate and befitting homage to this great musician .
we have lost a good soul and a great musician. may god give the family peace and solace – at this juncture of vacuum in their lives.

POINT ONE: OUR MODERATOR PROBABLY FEELS THAT ALL OPINIONS OUGHT TO BE SHARED IN A PUBLIC FORUM. that’s why many senseless persons – to satisfy – their bloated egos and their personal agendas -come and write thrash over here. but, the other – kk forum is not a public forum it seems hence there is objectionable censorship over there.

point 2 : WE ARE HAVING TWO MOHD RAFI music SHOWS IN JULY.

its titled : MOHD RAFI WE REMEMBER…..a musical homage ON 30TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY, 30 RAFI SONGS BY 30 COMPOSERS….and

many thanks for writing in and the appreciation for the little things we do for the great son of india – mohd rafi saab and for the cause of music.

on the occassion of 30th anniversary on july 31, we are having a programme titled : MOHD RAFI WE REMEMBER…

30 RAFI SONGS BY 30 COMPOSERS ON THE 30TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF SINGING LEGEND MOHD RAFI SAAHEB. IT WILL BE MY PLEASURE AND HONOUR TO RECEIVE U…..

  11. H.A.K. Walijah says:

I feel sorry for those people who criticize Rafi Saab and want to prove upper hand of other great singers. But it is purely the selected thing that what you select you will be happy with that. So some people select other than Rafi Saab and want to prove that their singer is more talented than ours. But as far as I know I am listening Rafi Saab for more than 35 years, whenever I listen his songs I feel as if I am under a velvet blanket of his voice and feel comfort and solace to my agitated soul. I listen more than hundreds of times every single song, but it is unending thirst of listening of his voice again and again. I have no words to praise our Rafi Saab. I was not fortunate to meet him when he was alive.

  12. Samina says:

Kudos to Binu Nair ji for taking such great initiatives.

I am writing after a long time and tried to catch up with all the new posts and comments. I was surprised to see people comparing their favorite singers so passionately that they didn’t mind pulling the others down… They commented on technical expertise and voice quality of Rafi Saab, Ghantashala, Kishore, Yesudaas, SPB and some regional singers I didn’t recognize. It felt like 2 people fighting hard over methods of self realization while you simply listen to a Rafi and before you could even imagine you transcend into a world of Godliness and undescribably amazing sensation… I don’t give a damn as to how different singers compare although I respect them all, All I know is that when I listen to Rafi saab I feel out of the world.. a feeling that is far better than fallling in love… and that’s it. I know who I love the most.

Binu ji, I admire your passion for Rafi saab and your sincere efforts towards serving him in whatever form you can… I know Rafi lovers are intoxicated in his music as they have already found that ever eluding ecstacy. Hope others get there soon…it’s the ultimate destination after all….

Dear Mr Binu Nair & Rafians,
Aadab. Ref to posts 19 & 17. Pl try & inform all rafi fans about the pgmes being planned much in advance. Why do you want us, those who can make it to miss such memorable events as also a chance to meet rafians? It would always be a pleasure.
Post 17- Lets ignore this idiot who doesnt even know how to converse in a forum like this. what are the moderators doing? How can anyone let idiots try to ridicule someone of the stature of rafi sahab & show their idiotic mindframe? Lets keep such things out of this forum. such fans only have a place- hanging shamelessly on the ceiling!!

MAY I ASK WHAT IS WRONG IN REMEMBER-ing MUSIC LEGENDS IN A MUSIC PROGRAMME. WE MUST ATLEAST, ATLEAST AND ATLEAST HAVE SOME GRATITUDE FOR THE LEGENDS – WHO GAVE SO MUCH PLEASURE BY THEIR MUSIC.
dont ever be sectarians and ever do hollow thinkings. just, just remember that the flame of yesteryear music has to be carried forward………

  15. Hussein Sheikh says:

Post 17: Be noted lata sang more duets with Rafi Saheb… if lata-kishore duets were more popular, then how come kishore failed to record more duets with lata?

  16. Prof Irfan Jaipurwale says:

I am lucky to have seen many Rafi ji shows abroad and in india. There used to be Johny whisky and his team dancing to the Live singing of Rafi ji in songs like : Badan Pe sitare lapete huwe, thoda ruk jaayega to tera kya jaayega etc.

starters can view this on youtube in the live concert section. also, when music presentation reaches a crescendo in the top gear – there will be clapping, dancing and other forms of appreciation. iN THE MUSIC INTERLUDES, we have observed Rafi ji whistling in songs if the whistling is there. People would love all this in the live performance.

PLEASE DO NOT CRITICISE FOR THE SAKE OF CRITICISING RAFI FANS. IT MAY SHOW YOUR IGNORANCE ABOUT MUSIC MANY A TIME’s.

  17. anand gupta says:

    SEE POST 19 Too…..

In the Listening session AUDIO VIDEO of Rafi Special KISHORE KUMAR WAS ALSO SHOWN ON THE SCREEN. THIS TIME IT WAS RAFI SINGING FOR KISHORE KUMAR IN THE SONG : ajeeb dastan hai yeh zindagi, kabhi hasan diya kabhi rula diya…. tuned by Shankar Jaikishan.

In the rafi lata music show, Shakti Samanta was remembered by a medley of songs on his first death anniversary. kishores song was in the medley section for not more than a minute. All other songs were of Lata and Rafi and the people ENJOYED.
if few people show their excitement and rush to the stage to shake their feet can the organisers STOP THEM? RAFI LOVERS ARE MUSIC LOVERS NOT TALIBANIS.
    PLEASE NOTE THIS.

  18. jasbir singh zando says:

post 17,this kishoreda fan is totally ignorant and unaware about the playback legends in our film industry since early forties before independence.Great male legends like k.l. sehgal, mohd rafi, mukesh, mannadey, hemanta kumar, talat mehmood rendered thousand of melodies under great music directors in rich lyrics including ghazals, quawalis, reliogious bhajans, national songs, romantic, sad and classical songs from 1942 to 1968…..this was the golden phase of melodious music…kishore also made entry during this period but could not get break except he sang for himself as actor n partly under sd burman for dev anand…if he had been greater than rafisaab…where was he….becoz of his rigid n hard voice he could not meet the demands of that time …hence he had to wait till ,1969 when melodies came down with the break of also rd burman…only lp,ka,so,mm,naushad n sj tried to maintain the right quality of music through rafisaab, mukesh m mannadey whereas hemantda shifted to bangla films in kolkata…rafisaab dominated like king giving playback to many heroes, comedians n character actors..as a result kk stands after these legends only….out of question to compare with rafisaab…even still if he compares that concludes rafisaab alltime great…he could copmpare with any singer why rafisaab becoz he is greatest even admitted by legend mannadey…
as regards rafi-lata dues these r the most popular, classics n melodious so far….best among all duets..rafisaab recorded about 500 duets with lataji,1042 with ashaji…that was due to royality problem between rafi n lata..major advantage went to ashaji, sumankalyanpur n ushaji… now kk fan can calculate how many fifties or may be less than hundred duets with lataji..he sang morte with ashaji….but rafi-lata duets are the greatest upto now…kishorfan can not change…..he needs to explain the logic….that shuts the topic who is greatest….he has illogically said of binu nairji who should be appreciated for his dedicated efforts……kkfan rewind your brain towards early hindi music…it should now satisfy you…i also like kishoreda…

now binu you can also keep mimicry contest in rafi programme . if not that i will give you a suggestion to also keep udit narayan, kumar sanu, rd burman, alka yaknik, sonu nigam ,etc.. you want your friends and brands to enjoy.
so you can keep anybody’s songs in rafi programme..
please take my suggestion and keep other singers songs in rafi programme. though people will not enjoy, they will curse such programme but your friends will go and dance on the stage and you will be happy..

ANIL JI, HANEEF AND MURTHY JI… aur RAFI fans :

TODAY EVENING sunday, July 13, WE HAD A WONDERFUL LISTENING SESSION titled ” TAARIF KARUN KYA ENKI ” A RAFI SPECIAL WITH LOTS OF VIDEO AND SONGS.

the programme lasted for three hours but the RANGE OF SONGS & the presentation was so cute that everyone was surprised when it was curtains.

It was held at Ville Parles Mahila Sangh Auditorium, attended by more than 300 Music Buffs. People came from vashi and palghar to attend the listening show. The special special – feature of the evening was the DISTINGUISHED presence of Ex Principal of architecture Mr. D Bhosle, a close friend of Rafi Saaheb who used to play badminton to gether day after day – for 20 long years. MR BHOSLE spoke on how Rafi saab attended their Annual day and sang one song – for the sake of the students who had requested Bhosle ji to bring Rafi Saab. Rafi said Bhosle ji – not only remained in peoples mind but also got a place in peoples heart by his super human acts of goodness.
Mr.Bhosle told me : Yes. Rafi was above human beings. He was not only the BEST SINGER but A GREAT HUMAN BEING.
The event was arranged by MR AND MRS SHENVAI. THREE CHEERS FOR THEIR GREAT EFFORTS.

  26. H.A.K. Walijah says:

There is an old saying : ” Jis pe guzarti hai woh hi janta hai “. I think this must be true when I read the post of Nedumangadan Ji. Because his frustration and disappointment is clearly evident from his post. I do not know much about the programmes held in admiration of Rafi Saab, but it is a good gesture to remember our singer and provide some employment to the unemployed imitators of Rafi Saab. Though none can reach to the dust of his feet. It is the greatness of Rafi Saab that after his demise many a copycats exploited his name, style and singing ways to achieve name, fame and get the riches, but none could have achieved a remarkable success and left behind as poor imitators. No matter how many copy singers are there in the market, but the original is the best one like our Rafi Saab, the matchless singer of HFM of great mother India.

  27. kishorefan says:

post 11, you are very wrong. if binu nair sahab has kept kishore songs in rafi lata programme that is a very specialized news for all kishore fans in the globe
he (i.e binu nair) knows today’s youth always want to listen kishore -lata songs more than rafi-lata songs. kishore lata songs has got more variety and they have sung maximum songs. rafi lata songs are good, but kishore lata songs are far more effective.
so i want to thank binu nair sahab for keeping kishore lata songs in rafi programme. now its clear that even rafi fans accept that kishore da’s songs are better and he is the best singer in the globe…

  28. mohammed haneef says:

thanx to everybody who came to the programme & gave me such a wonderful support & thanx to binu nair who introduced me in front of rafi fans

  29. vipul says:

    Nedumangadan,

You have some valid points. The dancing etc. at the stage should be seriously avoided and there should be some seriousness and dignity while arranging for such concerts – more so for singers of the stature like rafi and lata. I think the points are well noted and taken in a positive way by binu nair ji. Anyhow, binu nair ji should be appreciated for arranging the programme for hindi songs. It is a considerate view that other singers songs have been allowed and this can be taken as a liberal view and respect for other singers.

  30. BINU NAIR says:

THANKS DR SATYAVIR, UTTARAJI & Jasbir singh saaheb – FOR WRITING in…

Hum SANGEET se LOGON KA DIL BEHLAATE HAI AUR HAMARE LEGENDS KO YAAD KARTE REHTE HAI.

In our last Music Programme we remembered SHAKTI SAMANTA on his FIRST DEATH ANNIVERSARY. IN OUR NEXT THREE PROGRAMMES WE WILL PLAY A MEDLEY OF SONGS OF RAFI WORSHIPPER, SHOWMAN MANMOHAN DESAI THE GREAT DIRECTOR OF BLUFF MASTER, AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY, SACHAA JOOTHA, ETC.
AND SINCE ITS JULY, WE WILL ALSO PLAY MEDLEY SONGS OF RAFI-GEETA DUTTA TOO. REMEMBER GEETA ROY DUTTA LEFT US ON : JULY 20, 1972 AT AGE 41………..

NOT BEFORE THE LAST HURRAH OF SIGNATURE SONGS FROM ANUBHAV TUNED BY SALIL da ASSISTANT MR KANU ROY.

Nedumangadanji, your post no. 11 above. I personally have never met you or known you at all. earlier too I have read your posts and have never voiced my concern. I have noticed that your comments are always against Binuji or the Rafi Foundation, Mumbai. On various other gems of articles that keep posted on this website, I have never seen your comments. There may be mistakes on the part of Binuji and the Rafi Foundation, Mumbai and you have every right to correct them every now and then. I appreciate that very much. But I would also like to see you actively participating on other articles and give your word of praise where good articles by others are seen or other activities that get reported on this website. Surely, as an ardent admirer of Rafi Sahab, you would have something to say on other topics too. I hope to see you send your valuable comments on other topics also, besides on Binuji and the Rafi Foundation, Mumbai. Otherwise, your comments would look directed personally against an individual or an organization. I hope you take this in the right spirit, just as I have not ventured into any personal agenda. My only anguish is when things begin to look personal and my eagerness to diminish such an unpleasant situation prompts me to write this piece. Hope the future bodes well for the website by balanced viewpoints on all the subjects that get displayed here by all concerned. Please continue to be a regular visitor and share your views on all the topics that you like or may not like. It was good of you to have pointed some of the mistakes that the organizers overlooked while staging this programme and this should stand in good stead for their future programmes. ADABRAFI.

keep it up , all good wishes for furture programe

  33. Nedumangadan says:

    Binuji,
I have attended your music program with my wife. All the way from Jaipur I reached in time. But regret to say that it was a colossal waste of time and money.

When you announce a THEME, you should stick to it faithfully.Your concert was Lata Rafi gems. There are plenty of songs to pickup from these two stalwarts and why Shamshad, Kishore Asha have to gatecrash in the theme. Are you confused or not sure about Lata Rafi songs. Otherwise you should have taken Theme accordingly.
Your singers were not rehersed properly or were amaturish., more than twice I could see them continuing with songs when the arranger signalled ending of song. One mistake can happen but repeating…
What was the need of Sakti Samanta in Rafi Lata gems. Even then the song “Pukarta chala hoon” from MERE SANAM is not connected with Samanta. It is produced by G.P. Sippy and directed by Aanantkumar.
Your compearer also goofedup titles of films and didn’t had stage manners.
Vintage music or Golden era songs are always compared with classical concerts and gazal nights, they are not performance oriented, but to enjoy seriousely. So dancing by your friends were unwanted and also distracted audience. When they attacked stage I could see the friegtened face of female singer. So many family audience were taken back and didn’t receive possitively. If you wanted to entertain your sponsors and friends you could lead them to a nearby discotheque. Vintage music platoform is for serious listening. Now since you have announced further program I want you to note these things and correct yourselves. I am a well wisher so I will tell you on face whether you like or not.
These are silly mistakes which is not expected from a concert arranged by Rafi foundation.Rafi foundation should maintain high standard in their cocerts set example for others.

  35. Congratulations and Kudos to Binu bhai for organizing such a picturesque musical concert on legendary rafi saheb.

A soulful tribute indeed to the all time legends of hfm(hindi filmy music). The scenes of senior citizens dancing on the center stage in typical o p nayyer ji’s outfits and style enthralled me the most.the song selection was excellent.
in view the song of the day was the most sensuous and highly seductive/alluring/captivating “mujhe dekh kar aapka muskurana” along with sentimental “mahlo ka raaja mila”.

singers mona kamath, aparna, haniff bhai, prabhanjan, dinesh parmar and prem kumar are all good singers. i would like to view and listen to the video recording of this prog.

i agree with lt.col.javed sayyed ji that information and advt. of such a wonderful tribute to our own rafi saheb was lacking esp. on this website of we rafi bhakts.

it was an another wonderful attempt in memory of rafi ji and i convey my sincere and soulful thanks to binu ji and all those who contributed in its success including the rafi bhakton ki audience out there.

Hearty congratulations to Rafi Foundation, Mumbai for organizing such a grand show. The photographs were breathtaking and the singers must have rendered the songs very melodiously. That senior citizens took to the stage to dance to the tunes of o.p.nayyar’s compositions was a very delightful scene. Binuji, please convey our congratulations to all the team members, including all those from Rafi Foundation, Mangalore too.
