O Balam Tere Pyar Ki Tandi

© mohdrafi.com

Romance is the essence of the song O Balam Tere Pyar Ki Tandi wherein two lovers express their undying love for one another. In this song one is taken back in time to 1967 when romance was a taboo and had to be conducted in stealth. This song is picturised on the extremely beautiful Mumtaz and classic and dashing hero Dilip Kumar for the movie Ram Aur Shyam.

The lyrics of the song have been written by Shakeel Badayuni and are set to wonderful melody by Naushad. Naushad in his inimitable style has captured the essence of the rustic village setting by putting to great use India’s traditional folk music. Cinematographer Marcus Bartley has shot the song bringing to life the beautiful backdrop of rural India.

Ram Aur Shyam

In the movie, the aging Dilip Kumar at the fag end of his career gets to play a dual role of Ramchandra and Shyamrao. Ramchandra who escapes from being persecuted by his evil uncle Gajendra, ably portrayed by Pran, finds solace as Shyamrao. By a curious quirk of fate the original Shyamrao is mistaken for Ramchandra and brought to the palatial home where he encounters the evil Gajendra. The movie now takes the audience to another plane where good triumphs over evil. The movie has plenty of corollaries to the fights of Rama and Krishna. Some songs have been based on the exploits of Rama and Krishna.

This movie is a remake of a Telegu movie Ramadu Bheemudu produced by B.Nagi Reddi, where twin boys are separated at birth and grow up with different temperaments. Dilip Kumar essays the two roles in his inimitable style where at one instance he is timid and a little dumb as Ramchandra and at the same time he is macho and fearless as Shyamrao. He slides into each role effortlessly, at times portraying his insatiable appetite and at the same time wooing his heroines with consummate ease.

This song brings to life Naushad’s immortal music where the dufli, sarangi and ghungroo find a prominent place. The song which is semi-classical in nature brings back to memory Waheeda Rehman’s dance in Guide. The soft lilting music with haunting lyrics caresses the ears and is a treat for sore eyes.

In India, romance is synonymous with poetry and similes and the lyrics of this song just do that. The heroine tells the hero how his fire of love has enveloped her in tenderness and the hero in turn speaks of her beautiful and mesmerizing eyes. He speaks of how her beauty had enchanted and stolen his heart. She wishes to meet him daily and claims that just as a snake is driven to move by the snake charmer’s flute, her heart too sways to his love. The inclusion of the music of the flute adds to the charm of the song.

This song truly brings back the era of pure and unadulterated music where Asha Bhonsle and Mohammed Rafi are able to light the feeling of love in one and all.

  10. H.V.GURU MURTHY says:

Though Salil Chaoudhury and C.Ramachandra did not use Rafi regularly, whenever they took Rafi, the songs became extra-ordianry. Just listen to ‘Toote Huye Khabo Ne’ from “Madhumati”, ‘Dil Tadape Tadapaye’ from “Poonam Ki Raat”, ‘Tasveer Teri Dil Me’ a duet with Lata and ‘Koi Sone Ki Dilwala’ from “Maya”, ‘Mere Sathiyan’, ‘Dil Mera Legayi Lal Batuye Me’ and with Asha ‘Aap Ka Chehra’ from “Rootha Na Karo”.

  11. binus2000 says:

According to Mr.Halder a bengalee , there are innumerable rafi fans
in bengal. for them rofi is rofi whenever you mention other singers
name in a discussion. Pl. visit the KK site for Mr. Halders views on this
and a great writeup on KK and rafi saab. Only salil da, anil biswas and
c.ramchandra did not use rafis voice regularly which is understandable.
Hence irony 81 you are not right on this viewpoint.

  12. irony81 says:

THE FACT IS THAT ONLY THE BENGALIS THINK THAT KISHORE IS THE GREATEST SINGER. THEY DON’T LIKE RAFI MUCH AND THAT IS FROM SHEER JEALOSY AND NOTHING MORE. I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT IF RAFI WAS A BENGALI, THESE VERY SAME KISHORE FANS WOULD SAY THAT RAFI IS MUCH BETTER SINGER.

  13. Raajkumar Akela says:

I am very much agree with Mr. Narayanan. This is a short life and we should not waste our time commenting on persons like a b and c. Just listen Rafi Saab and enjoy the heavenly bliss. We all are sinners and one hardly deserves HEAVEN, but by listening to Rafi Saab we can enter into heaven without any hurdle…

  15. Raajkumar Akela says:

Really, who the hell is this bebyojit and about kishor kumar… I and my friend circle never liked his harsh voice. Voices should be like Rafi Saab and Lata mangeshkar. A beautiful dancer can give your eyes real enjoyment by her dance (art). Likewise only voices like Rafi Saab and Lata mangeshkar can give your ears heavenly enjoy. Am I right ? Judge yourselves.
    Regards.

  16. binus2000 says:

Kishore Kumar regarded Mohd Rafi saab as his guru. KK also
    worshipped K L Saighal.

If debyojit has said that Rafi saab is not even 1% of Kishore then
he needs psychiatric counselling and I can help him out.

Rafi fans do not please get excited by what fools say : the
fools can look at the SUN AND SAY that – that sun has no light
and it throws only darkness – at noon…

Lovely film and all the lovely hits of Rafi which brought memories of my childhood . Saw this hit movie when I was just 9 years.

  22. A S MURTY says:

The other songs too mentioned by other readers are true masterpieces, each one composed in a unique style. The composition for the song – AAYI HAI BAHAREN MITE ZULMO-SITAM was a typical Naushad tune and singing such songs is not at all easy for any singer. Only Mohd Rafi could sing the way Naushad had imagined the song while composing. Likewise, the song Main Hu Saaki Tu hai sharabi, sharabi too is a fantastic song, something of a city-based song unlike O BAALAM TERI PYAR KI THANDI which was a village song.

  23. javifazl says:

    thanks to mohdrafi.com.

  24. unknow1 says:

Ram aur Shyam is one of best Dilip Kummar film as a actor as I think or we can say in bollywood as film in which actor play two role,if there is Naushad Ali with Mohd Rafi there should be magic nothing is new in the music.

  25. H.V.GURU MURTHY says:

“Ram Aur Shyam” had another wonderful solo by Rafi – ‘Aaj Ki Raat Mere Dil Ki Salami Lele’ apart from ‘Aayee Hai Bahare’.

  28. Anwar Husain says:

    Hi

Just listen the background music of Ram Aur Shyam and you know the westren side of the great naushad Saheb.

  29. Hussein Sheikh says:

One of the best song in “Ram Aur Shyam”. Watching this song in the movie, feels only Dilip Kumar sung the song, this was Rafi Saheb’s magic. He was a man with a magical, golden voiced singer.

  30. admin says:

My apologies. I’ve corrected this in the article. Ram was with Mumtaz and Shyam with Waheeda Rehman.

  31. shahbaz says:

    Dear writer of thie article!
i would like 2 tell u that this song (O Balam Tere Pyar Ki Thandi Aag Mein Jalte Jalte) was picturized on Mumtaz and Dilip Kumar, instead of Waheed Rehman and Dilip Kumar. A duet songs which was picturized on Waheeda Rehman and Dilip Kumar in Ram aur Shyam was (Mein Hoon Saqi Tu hai Sharabi Sharabi).
