Rafi and the box office toppers across decades

Mohd Rafi’s clout as the most sought after male playback singer in the annals of Hindi Film world remains unparalleled. There hasn’t been any other male singer who has as impressive track record at the box office as Rafi Sahib had. Rafi started his career in Hindi film industry in early forties and continued to sing all the way till his swan song in 1980. In the following article I have highlighted the top 30 films of the decades from forties through eighties. The data for decade-wise top 30 earners comes from www.boxofficeindia.com. For the sake for brevity I restrict the discussion to only top 30 grossing films from each decade.
It may be true that the top earning movies may not necessarily have been the best selling music of the time or vice-versa but the purpose of the article is not to consider the musical merit of the movies, it is simply to analyze and highlight Rafi’s contribution to the biggest box office successes across those years. I provide at least one Rafi song against the name of the listed movies that featured his voice. The choice of the song is random whenever there are multiple Rafi songs in a movie. (more…)
